Graham Pechenik, founder and patent attorney at Calyx Law, joins The Psychedelic Podcast to delve into the complex world of patents and their impact on the psychedelic landscape. Find episode links, summary, and transcript here. Pechenik raises thought-provoking questions about the patent system's role in fostering innovation while also potentially hindering research and restricting use. He suggests that the patent system, intertwined with regulatory and healthcare structures, often determines whether groundbreaking substances like psilocybin gain FDA approval. Pechenik also explores concerns surrounding excessive psychedelic patents, comparing the unique approaches of COMPASS Pathways, MAPS, and Paul Stamets. As the episode unfolds, Graham and Paul contemplate the delicate balance between patent protection and freedom of use in the burgeoning psychedelics industry. Graham Pechenik is a registered patent attorney and the founder of Calyx Law, a law firm specializing in cannabis and psychedelics-related intellectual property. Graham has a BS from UC San Diego, where he chose Cognitive Neuroscience and Biochemistry majors—after his first psychedelic experiences inspired a deep curiosity about the bases for changes in consciousness—and a JD from New York University, where he initially pursued interests in bioethics and cognitive liberty. After a decade at large law firms defending and challenging patents for Fortune 500 companies across the agricultural, chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech, and technology industries, including working on several landmark patent cases both at trial and on appeal, Graham started Calyx Law in 2016 to help cannabis and psychedelics ventures design and implement their IP strategies. Graham is also editor-at-large of Psychedelic Alpha, where he writes about psychedelics IP, provides data for patent trackers, and maintains a psychedelics legalization and decriminalization tracker. He is the founding steward of the IP Committee of the Psychedelic Bar Association, where he is also on the Board of Directors, and is a member of Chacruna's Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants. Graham was raised in Oakland, CA, and currently lives in San Francisco. Highlights: Examining the unique patent process for the Stamets Stack microdosing protocol. How to enforce patents on illegal substances like psilocybin. Unpacking COMPASS Pathways' psilocybin polymorph patent. The pros & cons of psychedelic patents. How psychedelic patents could hinder therapeutic expansion. Graham's motivation to enter the psychedelic patents space. Well-being and wellness, it should be noted, are not the same. “Well-being” is an aspirational state of life, while “wellness” refers to the interventions humans perform on themselves to improve their health. Our state of living is not always well, and sometimes there is a need for measures that bring us closer to alignment with the universe.Frederick Tsao from the book Dawn of an Era of Well-BeingIn our quest to overcome the challenges that stand in the way of a better future—an era of “well-being” as our program frequently makes reference—we need to consider paths to spiritual betterment which help show us the way. Our guest today is Alberto Villoldo, a trained practitioner of western medicine who has also spent decades studying the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes. Dr. Villoldo will engage our hosts with a penetrating conversation investigating how shamanic traditions of South America can inform the western thought process. At the nexus of science and spirituality lies the key to our evolution as a species, and the basis of a healing process that will make true well-being accessible. This discussion delves into the evolution of the human brain and its chemistry, and how the shamanic tradition can help reinforce our connection to both nature and a higher level of consciousness.Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is a medical anthropologist and best-selling author who has studied the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 30 years. As Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act goes to voters, it's the perfect time to consider how powerful psychedelic molecules should enter mainstream consciousness. Today on Life is a Festival Ismail Lourido Ali, Director of Policy and Advocacy for the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) explains the various pathways to legalization including the Decriminalization movement, medicalization, religious exception, and legal adult use. The first half of our conversation is dedicated to Ismail himself, whose life journey gives him a unique philosophy on ending prohibition and a toolkit for helping us get there. We open with Ismail's cultural identity and his spiritual journey from Islam to the rave scene. We discuss Izzy's exploration of queerness and gender identity and his work from Drug Policy Reform to becoming a lawyer for MAPS. Izzy clearly articulates the key paths to legalization and his philosophy around each. We discuss key pieces of legislation including California's SB 519, Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act which goes to voters in this month, and Oregon's Bill 109 which will legalize and regulate adult use of psilocybin in that state. We conclude our conversation with an invitation to psychedelic entrepreneurs and Izzy's personal perspective on why Life is a Festival. As MAPS' Director of Policy and Advocacy, Ismail advocates to eliminate barriers to psychedelic therapy and research, develops and implements legal and policy strategy, and supports MAPS' governance, non-profit, and ethics work. Ismail earned his J.D. at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2016, after receiving his bachelor's in philosophy from California State University, Fresno. Ismail has previously worked for the ACLU of Northern California's Criminal Justice & Drug Policy Project, and Berkeley Law's International Human Rights Law Clinic. Ismail is licensed to practice law in the state of California, and is a founding board member of the Psychedelic Bar Association. He also currently serves on the board of the Sage Institute, contributes to Chacruna Institute's Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants, and participates on the advisory council for the Ayahuasca Defense Fund. It's undeniable that right now we are in a rapidly changing and complex relationship with the consumption, production, and reality of drugs, substances, and medicines, and their usage. This week, guest Ismail Lourido Ali, J.D. guides listeners through an overview of where we are in our relationship with drugs in the American context, and how this relationship is indicative of our relationship with the Earth and with humanity broadly. We cannot move to a healthy and healing relationship with substances without acknowledging the violent realities brought about by criminalization, exploitation in drug production, and the exorbitant costs of pharmaceutical medicine. Ismail encourages us to move beyond the black and white view that some drugs are medicine while others are criminal. This expansive conversation encourages listeners to ask what deep, collective healing looks like, and to reflect on complicated relationships with consumption across substances. As we think more deeply on these issues, we must ask: what voids are we filling, what imagination do we need to tap into, what kind of reconciliation do we need? As MAPS' Director of Policy and Advocacy, Ismail advocates to eliminate barriers to psychedelic therapy and research, develops and implements legal and policy strategy, and supports MAPS' governance, non-profit, and ethics work. Ismail is licensed to practice law in the state of California, and is a founding board member of the Psychedelic Bar Association. For me & I imagine many of you listening to this show right now, I felt as though I didn't fit into the world around me for a long time. Looking back in hindsight, it wasn't that I objectively did not fit in, but rather, it was the feeling of not wanting to fit in to a broken system that led to me feeling flawed for so much of my young life. When we're young, we lack the life experience & self awareness to accept ourselves for who we truly are in many cases & instead, look to the world around us to determine who we feel we should be & I truly feel this is one of the challenges we all go through in one way or another as we grow older & choose to individuate into the fullest expression of our authentic selves. Stopping by to share his experiences in the world of psychedelics with us today is a man who knows this fore mentioned challenge all too well. From a very young age, he was diagnosed with a brain atrophy which led to 30 percent of his brain not working properly & a subsequent diagnosis of autism. The result of this was that doctors told his parents that he should be sent away to a specialized home & essentially forgotten about & deemed unfit for society, however, his mother never gave up on him. She worked tirelessly with him to allow him to integrate into society & because of that, he was able to not only move through life successfully, have meaningful relationships & be a productive member of society, but he was also able to get himself to a point through therapy where he is no longer considered to have autism & with the help of psychedelics, he was able to further remediate his brain & experience of life into one that is not only great & grand, but is also fulfilling & in todays episode, we will be diving into his experiences with these medicines, his experiences using psychedelics to foster deeper connection in his life & much, much more. Noah VilgrainMy name is Noah Vilgrain. I was born with a brain atrophy which affected thirty percent of my brain to be useless. The doctors told my parents, I would never talk, be intelligent or have meaningful relationships with anyone. They told my parents I should be sent to a home and forgotten about. My mother never gave up on me and worked with me so that I could be able to live somewhat of a normal life. As it turns out my brain has the amazing capacity to heal itself. So throughout my entire life I went from one end of the spectrum to the other. After years of therapy and always working hard, I managed to get to the other side where I technically don't have autism. And yet I still have traits, my identity was that of a person with autism and was difficult to navigate who I was. In steps with the wonderful help of psychedelics which taught me how to be myself, how to navigate the world and how I could connect with other people on a much deeper level. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™... … you'll learn about shamanism, “spiritual minimalism” and how traditional healing arts connect so profoundly to the natural world. This conversation also explores distinct themes of consciousness, the soul, and deep respect for plant medicine and Ayahuasca ceremony. The guest, Shaman Jorge Hachumak, is a Peruvian of Spanish descent who's made a winding journey into shamanism as a healer. After receiving a European education, he became a practitioner of Chinese Qigong in old Lima's (Peru) China Town. After a successful career in tai chi competition, he worked with elderly patients in hospitals in Northern Peru. During this time, he was taken under the wing of native shamans, witches and herbalists who spent years teaching him the ancient healings. He learned ancient Peruvian medicine arts (not from the Incas, but from the North Coast and the Northern jungle of the Amazon). He now moves seamlessly between perspectives, having one foot firmly in the rational, scientific world and another in the spirit world.“The ancient healing arts are deep and expansive—you never stop learning, and what you learn in a lifetime will always be a small fraction of what is available to learn,” he says in his new book, “Journeying Through the Invisible: The Craft of Healing With, and Beyond, Sacred Plants, as Told by a Peruvian Medicine Man.” “I want to offer a larger picture of the Medicine Craft and to create appreciation for other important aspects that are endangered or still not well-known.”This larger picture includes influences from science, history, religion and the natural environment.Shaman Hachumak looks at consciousness as two states that lead to both deep understanding of the healing arts and deep self-reflection:Suffering Consciousness keeps us stuck in our negative waysSoul Consciousness is awakened during a ceremony or spiritual moment. Your entire being awakens, and you are shown the way to live according to the dictates of your conscience and the teachings of the spirits. He also uses his knowledge and experience to broaden people's understanding of Ayahuasca as a powerful plant medicine. He works to protect Ayahuasca and the traditional ceremony from misuse and exploitation. WE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Ariel Clark is a wildly impressive woman. A cannabis and emerging medicine lawyer, she has been in the trenches of cannabis law and drug policy reform for over a decade. She's been dubbed one of the "most important women in cannabis," one of the "most powerful cannabis lawyers in the world," and a "cannabis leader who is shaping the cannabis industry" by numerous publications. Ariel founded her own firm Clark and Howell which is intentionally woman-owned and steered. Clark is a uniquely progressive mind. She's taking her expertise in the wild world of weed to the psychedelic and plant medicine industries as a founding board member of the Psychedelic Bar Association, member of the Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants AND as legal counsel to the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. In 1955, a Mazatec shaman introduced a westerner to sacred mushrooms. That event has had tremendous ripple effects. In part 4 of our miniseries, we speak with Dr. Bia Labate about the deep indigenous roots of the psychedelic renaissance and what is missing from the western biomedical narrative around these powerful substances. Psychoactive plants are at the heart of many traditional and Indigenous spiritual and religious traditions, yet many have been outlawed or severely restricted. How does society determine religious freedom? With: Jeremy Narby on Amazonian shamanic knowledge; and Jeffrey Bronfman, the U.S. legal and spiritual representative of Brazil's União do Vegetal (UDV) church, whose legal victories for its U.S. domestic use of ayahuasca have taken it to the Supreme Court; moderated by Bioneers' J.P. Harpignies.
Investigator, Author, and Tin Foil Hat Researcher, Frantic Missy joins me, Jordan Vezeau, for a wild ride of topics, and divulgences such as solving multiple murders as an unpublished author, connections of our world and sacred plants (like Hollywood or Ivy League Schools), and a virtual Bohemian Grove! She introduces me to Gertrude Sanford Legendre, which unravels a whole whack load of other topics, and uncovers connections to so many well and lesser-known topics and people, including the OSS, the Nazis, missing women, Mount Holly Plantation (sacred plants again), Philip Barry (playwriter of Holiday), and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Along with her interesting connections and wild life stories (including a kidnapping by the Nazis and a possibly unrealistic escape), she was a spy, explorer, big-game hunter, environmentalist, plantation owner, and more. Different parts of her family tree also raise attention; her father is from the Sanford bloodline, a political dynasty family similar to the Bushes! Another rabbit hole is apparently her daughter, Bakara Legendre who, similar to her mother, was a woman of many hats, but most interesting is her placement and photos/video she took at the Robert F. Kennedy assassination! We also discuss some famous cases of missing girls, including Madeline McCann, Brittanee Drexel, and Shannon McConaughey and some of the many interesting twists in their stories. We watch and react to the 1931 cartoon ‘Bimbo's Initiation' and make tons of off-the-top symbolic connections to the occult, various conspiracies, and warning signs, some that are very weird. Missy shares with us a crazy plantation map she owns from 1936 that helps connect family bloodlines relevant to some of the topics we discuss. We also discuss Decentraland, the new virtual reality craze that us shaking up the world of crypto currency. Finally, we make some conclusions and put out some theories to tie everything up until next time! The best one is Missy's theory on the missing girls (and the rare eye conditions), which ties in the Legendre family and the plantations, and involves them being trained as priestesses. This is another wild ride so sit back and enjoy this episode of Divulgence with me, Jordan Vezeau! **Being a brand-new podcast, all support is appreciated, any shape or form. In this episode, we approach plant medicine from a yogic perspective. And we explore how yoga and sacred plant medicine are complementary practices with a long-standing symbiotic tradition; how yoga can be a powerful preparatory and integrative practice when working with plants; and how yoga can also be a powerful alternative to working with plants—not everyone needs to work with plants. It's Native American Heritage Month so I just want to acknowledge the debt we owe to the native people of this land and all sacred lands, and the importance of respecting all indigenous traditions in joining sacred plant ceremonies and working with sacred plants. I think it's important to engage only in ceremonies that preserve traditions and have the blessing of indigenous curanderos. The world needs these sacred traditions, and they should be spread far and wide, but with a deep respect for their roots. I will be offering a plant medicine integration yoga class as part of the upcoming Belize International Yoga Festival on December 4. It will offer a taste of the kinds of yoga integration practices I share with students and clients. You can learn more here. Hey everybody! Episode 38 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Ute Behrendt. Ute and I met at the Amazonian plant medicine center, the Temple of the Way of Light, where she works as a facilitator for plant-medicine ceremonies working with the Shipibo lineage of medicine. I've worked with Ute for a number of years now and really enjoy her partnership, wisdom, kindness, and care for all of the guests she looks after. She has had a varied and interesting life including working in psychiatric hospitals and in therapeutic institutions in Germany. She has also spent a number of years learning from a strong Shipibo family of doctors. I think this gives her a really balanced and holistic approach to her work. She is constantly learning and growing and has a lot of insight to offer. I think you all will enjoy this conversation and learn a lot. To view bonus material and extended conversations, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!"Over the last years, Ute has dedicated herself to learn and study with long-term Masterplant Diets in a well-known and respected Shipibo Healer lineage in the Ucayali region in Peru. She sees herself as a bridge between ancestral wisdom and Western understanding of life. Besides studying in the Shipibo Tradition with Sacred Plants and her Shipibo Maestros, she also is studying different psycho-spiritual approaches to understand the mind and human experience better. For Ute, Psychology and Spirituality are not separate when you want to experience wholeness. She is fascinated about integrating and connecting different approaches and using different pathways to find and explore inner truth…She is organizing Masterplant Retreats & Diets and works as a facilitator in a well-known Ayahuasca Center. She also provides online psycho-spiritual inquiry sessions and mentoring packages. She believes that everyone has their own answers and wisdom inside, and that's why she is focusing on questions and letting answers unfold by themselves…Before she moved to Peru, she worked in a psychiatric hospital and in therapeutic institutions in Germany for almost 10 years… In Peru, working and studying with the Shipibo Healers and Sacred Plant Medicine, she found the missing link.”For Ute's full bio, visit: https://www.universewithinpodcast.com/podcast/ute-behrendtFor more information about her work, visit her website: https://www.true-journey.net/This episode is sponsored by the Temple of the Way of Light: https://templeofthewayoflight.org/Share the show, Subscribe or Follow, leave comments, and if you can go on Apple Podcasts and leave a starred-rating and a short review. Please note this was recorded 3 weeks ago, along with the last 2 episodes, before the pandemic. As I shared on my main FB page, I don’t mean to be insensitive about the world’s issues and what we’re facing. However! This is a time on the Earth of unprecedented change and incorporating new ways of thinking, being and healing… 065: Deep Soul Work with Sacred Plants This episode carries some serious TRUTH BOMBS! If you had discovered something powerful that you knew could save the life of a suffering loved one – but it was pretty unorthodox and “out-of-the-box” – would you still share it with them? Most of us would say yes…we’d do anything to relieve the pain and facilitate healing – and especially save the life – of those we love. Since the devastating suicides of her son-in-law and husband, Laura Stoker has been on a focused mission to heal her family, find her highest path as a soul entrepreneur, and liberate others along the way. In her memoir, "Joy Is My Answer,” she candidly shares her journey of living with her husband’s mental illness for 22 years and coming into her own power by finding her voice and holding healthy boundaries. Laura recently returned from Peru and had an unforgettable healing experience working with a Shipibo tribe Shaman and the feminine sacred plant medicine, Ayahuasca. This was her second time in the Amazon jungle of Peru working with this plant medicine, and this time she took her daughter. Laura and I have a VERY frank and fascinating conversation about the future of healing with sacred plants. Link to this episode is in the comments below! (SUBSCRIBE to Women Seeking Wholeness on iTunes, Spotify and all other podcast platforms) In this episode: Why certain powerful plants in the psychedelic family – Ayahuasca in particular – are often confused with drugs, yet are poised to be the new frontier in mind/body healing. What is a modern-day Shaman? What is Ayahuasca’s purpose in creation? How has it been used for hundreds of years and how, when and where should it be administered? There comes a point in the life of every truth-seeker when they must claim their OWN path without having to look to another human leader or authority for approval. Why is this the natural order of soul evolution, and how can NATURE assist us in this evolution? Find Laura’s book: “Joy is My Answer” on Amazon. In this episode, Kyle sits down with Rob Heffernan, an independent researcher and activist. In the show, they talk about churches, Ayahuasca, accessibility and the Psychedelic Liberty Summit by the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. Rob is also part of Chacruna’s Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants. The Council for the Protection of Sacred plants is "an initiative of the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines that endeavors to advocate for the legality of sacred plant medicines among indigenous peoples and non-indigenous communities, encourage legal harm reduction practices that protect those who use them, educate about conservation of plant species, document relevant legal and social issues, and consult on legal cases including possible litigation. " 3 Key Points: The Psychedelic Liberty Summit is a gathering on legal, cultural, and political issues around the emerging psychedelic renaissance. Accessibility is not just about whether or not people can afford psychedelic therapy, people cant even afford regular therapy, the whole healthcare model is an issue. A lot of churches get a bad name, but really most churches are built around community. Psychedelics can help revitalize churches. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes About Rob Rob is a member of the Chacruna Council for protection of sacred plants He is an integrative sound and music practitioner He is involved in the Santo Daime He has been drinking Ayahuasca for over 20 years He began to ponder and ask a lot of questions about involvement with medicine communities Psychedelic Liberty Summit Rob will be hosting a talk on religious exemptions and more There will be speakers of all different initiatives, from decriminalization to indigenous relations There are a lot of investors interested in the psilocybin market The issue is complex because there is this ongoing cultural history of the US and other countries exploiting those cultures and removing resources (oil, medicines, etc) Ayahuasca The first time Rob drank Ayahuasca was back in 2000, where there weren't Ayahuasca retreats going on then People who lived in the area were not familiar with Ayahuasca use People started coming from around the world to use Ayahuasca There are feedback loops between the cities and the forests People typically think integration is what happens afterwards, but really it is also the sacrifice from the start, the preparation, such as a dieta We need to honor what we have learned from the indigenous, and give back Traditional dietas don't involve actually drinking the Ayahuasca, the culture has come a long way Accessibility While these medicines are relatively safe, you can get in trouble using these substances recreationally, there is a role for the therapeutic support It's not just about whether or not people can afford psychedelic therapy, people cant even afford regular therapy, the whole healthcare model is an issue Santo Daime It was founded in the 1930’s in Brazil The reason that the Santo Daime looks more white in the USA is due to the segregation There are all sorts of ways that the Santo Daime may look When Rob first got involved in drinking Ayahuasca, he wasn't sure that he wanted to get involved in the Santo Daime, but he said the container was so strong There are hymns sung, and it's very structured It allows you to really go deep Sometimes it can look like drumming, dancing, and fire, but there is also a style of sitting in silence There is a profound ethical foundation which is really important All of the elements make for a really important container In the traditional form, you do not touch anyone, unless there is a certain circumstance, and a prior consensual agreement, and waivers signed, etc There have been issues of sexual abuse in the psychedelic realm, the Santo Daime takes many precautions against this Churches There are legal churches in the US through the Daime and the UDV (União do Vegetal) The Daime has 5 churches that are explicitly legal The government has decided not to pursue or prosecute Ayahuasca for those other churches From Shock to Awe Someone tragically died at the Soul Quest Church, but it wasn't related to ayahuasca There are a lot of people that claim to be a part of a Native American church that are not A lot of people reach out to Chacruna on how to become a part of the Native American Church to hold ceremonies, and it's not easy, you almost have to already be a part of it, instead of just joining Some people don't like the word church, but it originates from the words ‘congregation’ and ‘assembly’ “The problem is the controlled substances act, that these things are illegal in the first place” - Rob "The experience in all those settings is about community. The goal isn't to have spiritual experiences, its to have a spiritual life” - Rob Psychedelics and entheogens could be central to creating a new hub It is possible to create psychedelic churches outside of the Santo Daime The Ayahuasca tradition really uses the potential of group process “How individual is the psychedelic experience, where you need some one-on-one work?” - Kyle Psychedelic Liberty Summit April 25-26 in San Francisco Discount Code: PsychedelicsToday for 10% off at checkout Links Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicine Psychedelic Liberty Summit About Rob Heffernan Rob Heffernan has been involved in the Peruvian curandero tradition and the Santo Daime for the last 16 years. Amber Antonelli and Anthony Esposito run the Awaken Your Soul iboga retreat center in Costa Rica. Iboga is the name of a plant native to Gabon and neighboring West African countries that acts as a psychedelic, or as Amber and Anthony put it, a "teacher plant." Iboga, along with its better-known (in the US) cousins, Ayahuasca and psilocybin-containing mushrooms, appears to act pharmacologically by down-regulating parts of the human brain responsible for the moment-by-moment construction of the ego.

Who were the Toltecs? What was their procedure which would result in a far saner human being present? Does that sound like a tall order? Of course it is! That is why we need people like Mario Gomez Mayorga who have really walked down that path and applied the teachings to those who really need it. People with existential dilemmas, depression, physical disease and most common of all simple grief. The modern world is soul destroying especially for the sensitive of heart as we all know too well. Where to go? Who to see? How to overcome these profound issues of the inner person, the one deep below the name and the title? Mario shares over three decades of experience mainly in the jungle environment of his home base in Palenque and shows how the ancient Toltecs are still here. Their way of teaching will amaze you. Even Mario did not know how he was learning until he had learned! But what he learned has proven to be very precious, not only for himself but for the people who come to walk the path through the jungle with him from all over the world. A remarkable healer indeed if that is what we can call the remarkable work of Mario Gomez Mayorga. There is no name for this really..

They go back in forth in conversation on whether there was psychedelic use in medieval or ancient Christianity and if so, was there a secret tradition of including art of mushrooms or psychedelic substances in cathedrals and castles. 3 Key Points: Jerry Brown makes the claim that there is evidence of visionary plants in Christianity and the life of Jesus found in medieval art and biblical scripture. Tom Hatsis makes the claim that Christianity is not hiding a giant secret inside the biblical texts about the true hallucinogen at the root of the religion being an Amanita Muscaria. Jerry and Tom debate back and forth, pulling from art and textual evidence (and lack thereof) to support or deny the claim that Psychedelic Mushrooms are the root of Christian religion. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes Jerry B. Brown PhD. Anthropologist, Author and Activist Served as the Prof of Anthropology at FIU in Miami He designed and taught a course on hallucinogens and culture He is the Co-Author of Sacred Plants and the Gnostic Church: Speculations on Entheogen use in Early Christian Ritual The Psychedelic Gospels: The Secret History of Hallucinogens in Christianity Tom Hatsis Author, Public Speaker, Roller Derby Player and Potion Maker He is the Author of three books in Psychedelia; The Witches Ointment: the Secret History of Psychedelic Magic Psychedelic Mystery Traditions; Spirit Plants, Magical Practices and Psychedelic States Microdosing Magic: A Psychedelic Spellbook Partnered with event organizer and short film maker, Eden Woodruff, who runs Psanctum Psychedelia in Portland in the process of winning the Guinness Book of World Record in Magic Intro The debate is around the early Christian use of psychedelics and mushrooms in Christian art The conversation is on the validity on whether or not psychedelics were used in early Christianity Dr. Jerry Brown on Psychedelics in Christianity The Miracle of Marsh Chapel - a double-blind experiment conducted by Walter Pahnky in 1962 where 20 students were divided into two groups, half received niacin and the other half received psilocybin 9 out of 10 who took psilocybin had a profound psychedelic experience Brown explains that this is an important part in the entire history of psychedelics After discovering the Amanita Muscaria mushroom (confirmed by Paul Stamets) in a 15th Century Church in Scotland, he realized that there were many entheogenic images in Christian art He says that most church historians do not have training in mycology to recognize entheogens and mushrooms He brings up an image of Adam and Eve standing next to a large Amanita Muscaria mushroom He went to a Parish Church and saw an image of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a Donkey, and one of the youths welcoming Jesus is holding a long mushroom cap He went to churches in England, Germany and France In the drawing of Genesis, he saw God creating plants (psilocybin mushrooms) "When you go back beyond the 3rd century, there are no visual images or Christian art due to poverty and persecution" - Jerry Jerry reads a passage, “Jesus said to his disciples, “compare me to someone and tell me who I am like” Thomas said to him, “Master, my mouth is wholly incapable of saying whom you are like.” Jesus said “I am not your master, because you have drunk you have become intoxicated from the bubbling wellspring that I have personally measured out. He who will drink from my mouth will become like me, I shall become like he, and the things that are hidden, should be revealed to him.” He interprets the passage as a reference to drinking a psychoactive mushroom substance Jerry goes on to explain that Jesus realized his feeling of eternal life through the use of psychoactive entheogens He says that this is not a means of dismissing Christianity, but instead to reintroduce Christianity with its original roots Tom Hatsis on Psychedelics in Christianity Tom says that Jerry makes a lot of assertions, but does not present any evidence. He talks about art, but not anything in scripture Tom is curious why the only artwork that Jerry brings his assertions about mushrooms are from a time where we can’t ask them about it Tom brings up Julie and Jerry’s book and that the first chapter has nothing to do with Christian History at all Tom uses an example of stone mushrooms. Someone doing a cross cultural analysis, might agree that they are mushrooms based on the other findings of cannabis and opioids But, as a historian, Tom looks for evidence and in this case, there are eye witness accounts of its use He brings up the example, the infamous plaincourault fresco of Adam and Eve at the tree of good and evil with the forbidden fruit Using this one example, he wants to prove how critical historical methodology is used to prove unsubstantiated claims on Christian art as wrong Tom urges listeners to view the unaltered versions of the plaincourault fresco at Georgio Samorini’s Flikr page The paradise tree is a mix of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and a symbol of Christ's victory over Adam’s transgression. In the play, it was tradition to place small Eucharist wafers on the tree branches so that’s what the white dots are on the tree branches The tree's shape is not a mushroom cap, it is a parasol of victory Jerry’s Rebuttle Jerry says that the absence of evidence, is not equal, or proof of evidence of absence (just because it’s not written in text, doesn't mean that its not there in the art) Jerry’s issue with the fresco is that “The Fall” is a New Testament creation, not all the way back in Genesis He says that on their website, they do not ‘alter’ the image, they ‘enhance’ it He says that Tom claims the fruit doesn't matter, but the fruit does matter (it could be a psychedelic mushroom) He touches on the skeletal appearance of Eve and the meaning of renewal of life Jerry thinks this image is the beginning of the religious experience and symbolism that the soul is immortal and will continue to exist after death He says the serpent is not a depiction of evil entering Eden, but instead a source of knowledge and a spiritual guide to the feminine to help bring man into higher awareness Tom’s Rebuttle Tom says he didn't hear any evidence from Jerry, he heard arguments to authority He says that Jerry uses anthropology to uncover history, and opinions of art historians, but medieval historians agree that the mushroom is not present in Christian art He also says he did agree with Jerry about the mushroom in art, but that was last year and he has proven himself wrong and that the mushroom caps are parasols of victory Jerry says that Amanita Muscaria was in the Soma, but Tom says cannabis was, and mushrooms were not Chris Bennett's book on Soma There is zero evidence for mushroom art during medieval times In Jerry’s book, he writes about the Basilica di Aquilea, saying that they are Amanita Muscaria, but Tom says they are not that type of mushroom Tom also says that in the play depicted in the plaincourault, that the script literally says the wafers are hung on the tree, and that the little white dots are not the dots from an Amanita Muscaria Jerry’s Closing Remarks He says that this isn't just cultural analysis, this is about fieldwork and looking at how native people view this artwork The problem he has with Tom and Church historians is that it is not taking evidence from Ethnobotanists Jerry says he believes that there is a long tradition of entheogenic mushrooms in Christian art and would like this debate to continue Tom’s Closing Remarks Tom says he still isn't hearing evidence, he is only hearing assertions and argument to authority and eminent scholars Tom says that Genesis doesn't matter in the plaincourault, because we know that it's about the play He has multiple articles debunking these images on his website Carl Sagan’s Bologna Detection Kit - which shows how to spot fake conspiracies Tom says the holy mushroom hypothesis fails against all the claims Jerry has made Links Tom's Website Jerry's Website Check out our online course, "Introduction to Psychedelics" About Jerry Jerry B. Jerry Brown is the co-author of The Psychedelic Gospels: The Secret History of Hallucinogens in Christianity. Jerry, as well as his wife and co-author Julie Brown, began their journey into the psychedelic history of early Christianity after noticing telling depictions of psychedelic mushrooms on display in the frescoes and architecture of the many chapels and cathedrals that exist across Europe. Jerry tells the story of how he and his wife Julie first made this baffling discovery, and also explains as to why it has not been documented and researched until very recently. We examine the possible role psychedelics would have played in the early centuries of Christianity, and more broadly, the origins of religion itself, as well as how our own personal experiences have led us toward having an open minded exploration of this subject. What does it mean for there to be these depictions of psychedelic mushroom in early Christian art? How does this subject and research fit into the broader "Psychedelic Renaissance" that is currently underway in multiple scientific disciplines? Jerry and I discuss this and much more in this episode. Many scholars have speculated about the use of psychedelics, also known as entheogens, in the early stages of many religions. Is there any evidence of the use of entheogens in early Christianity? Our guest, Dr. Jerry Brown, author of the Psychedelic Gospels, believes there is. Join us with Dr. Brown, as we discuss his findings and the evidence he and his wife found on an epic journey to dive deeper into the origins of early Christian mysticism. Plant Medicines and their use in healing, spirituality and awakening. Psychedelic medicines and traditional Sacred Plants when used respectfully can be an important and profound allay on your spiritual path. They have a great power to root out unconscious patterns and assist us to see clearly and from a broad perspective our deep seated conditioning. Not only do they help us to see but also to clear these tendencies energetically from our system. Here is a podcast episode in which I discuss the topic in more detail.
There have already been a few sightings of anemones in Israel, and that means it’s the start of wildflower season. Many Israelis track wildflowers with a passion. There are traffic jams near popular flower-carpeted hills and even websites that tell you what’s popped up where. But what Israelis (or at least the vast majority of them) don’t do is pick those flowers. That restraint does not stem from any particular zeal for following the law that forbids such picking. Rather, it is the product of a fantastically successful public service campaign that began back in the early 1960s. Daniel Estrin brings us that story in “Act I: Flower Power.” In Act II, we switch gears, locales, and just about everything else to follow the journey of Nathan Ehrlich, a Brooklyn-based reporter. For the past few years, Nathan has sought the help of Peruvian shamans (including one kindred spirit, Sergey, who came to Peru from Ukraine by way of Israel), whose work with ayahuasca, huachuma, and other sacred plants has helped him break through emotional and physical barriers. His story is “Where the Wild Things Grow.” Stay connected with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and by signing up for our newsletter at israelstory.org/newsletter/. Sita has now been formally studying and practicing Indigenous Plant Wisdom for over nine years. She has undertaken an apprenticeship in the Shipibo tradition. She works and learns from the Master Plants and dietas. She works with individuals and groups in ceremony.Sita came to Ayahuasca through her yoga practice when she was invited to join a journey by her teacher. When she participated in that first ceremony over eight years ago, she had been abstinent from all alcohol and drugs and had maintained self imposed dietary restrictions. In this period of rapid change, the call to individual and collective awakening is clear. It's beyond coincidence that the use of visionary/healing/awakening plants such as ayahuasca, psilocybe mushrooms, iboga, peyote, cannabis, and others is spreading rapidly at this time. When encountered in the best of conditions, these plants may be the most effective teachers we have now - direct conduits to the deepest, most enlightening truths. Our intention with this second Spirit Plant Medicine Conference is to offer accurate, respectful, and most of all beneficial information and inspiration on the use of and larger context around such plants. It's an intention arising from a vision and a prayer carried in the hearts of many.To that end we're assembling an exceptional group of knowledgeable, engaging, and heartfelt speakers to share their wisdom. We all listen to voices, but for many the voice of Spirit gets lost in the distractions, seductions, and the cacophony of voices in the head. Nonetheless the most essential gift shamanism offers each of us is direct revelation, which comes as visions, voices, or experiences with our own helping spirits. How do we cultivate that personal, direct relationship? Join shaman and host, Christina Pratt, as she answers the questions received from the first show and shares ideas for teaching children to cultivate truth cords and inner alignment so that they never lose the ability to know how to listen. We will explore questions like, “If my mind is a sneaky weasel, how can I trust what I am hearing? This all seems smoke and mirrors. Help!” and “Aren’t I just making up these voices in the first place?” “The answer is simple,” says Christina, “It comes from the heart and begins with our willingness to feel.” But how do we do that, was the resounding response from listeners. Let’s find out.
