The Marinade with Jason Earle, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process, welcomes Ryan Sollee. Ryan is the principal singer and songwriter for The Builders and the Butchers. The Builders and the Butchers came into my life at a very formative time with their debut self-titled record in 2007. I was in my 20s, trying to figure out what adult me would look like- a little angsty, disillusioned yet hopeful, and curious about the world. Ryan Sollee's tunes seemed to capture what I was feeling. All these years later, The Builders and the Butchers have a wonderful new record of foot-stomping anthems called Hell & High Water, which was released on May 6th, 2022. This conversation is such a thrill, y'all.
Ryan Sollee is back! We talk with him about his podcast, Tour Punisher, and he plays us some songs from the upcoming Builders and the Butchers album. We absolutely love his music, and it's always fun to have him on. We talked about bad driving, home made wine, sad songs, trying to trick our kids into liking good music, and we answer some listener questions. Songs this week from Ryan, Jodie Faster, and The Trash Bats.

This week Dewey sits down (literally) with the one and only Ryan Sollee from The Builders and the Butchers for a chat in Ryan's mancave to talk about the stories of old and new about the unique stigma of Alaskans in music and the current events in each others lives. Ryan Sollee stopped by this week to play us some music! We talk about swears, the meteoric rise of his band The Builders And The Butchers, growing up in Alaska, and we finally give a name to one of our favorite segments.
Brenda had to make a hard choice after her life-threatening motorcycle accident. Would she forgive the driver who hit her? Her decision rested on the lessons she'd learned from COTN's children in Uganda, who had survived atrocities of their own in Uganda's war. In this episode, Brenda talks about her time in Uganda, and how learning about forgiveness from COTN's children changed her life and the lives of everyone involved in the accident. When you hear the phrase “manage up” or “lead up,” it’s easy to assume that means that your boss isn’t doing their job and you have to teach them how to do it. But it’s not that simple. When you consider that 82% of leaders were promoted into their role because they were great at doing the job of the people reporting to them, not because they were identified as a great leader, it’s clear you’ll have a decent chance of getting in with a boss who has some opportunity areas. But even those who are good or even great bosses need to both lead and be led. We wanted to get into how to make that a normal, healthy part of your partnership with your boss, so we talked with guest alumni Dena Alspach (http://prohumans.com/episode-11-the-amazing-job-you-dont-know-youre-good-at-yet/) and Brad Walter (http://prohumans.com/episode-26-self-organizing-teams-brad-walter/) about approaches they’ve taken in their careers, and what learnings they can share to help other Professional Humans be better at work. We talked with Kelly Groehler of Sprosty Network about her progression from Director of External Relations at Best Buy to her present job working in a retail startup accelerator here in the Twin Cities. Kelly tells us about how she spent time deciding what she _didn't_ want to do, which ended up being important as she made her way to the role she's in now. After reflecting on the conversation, we found a pattern emerging in several of the conversations we've had where people we admire are doing jobs they love and finding that formal training or credentials are less important than they used to be. Kelly talks about it in this episode in regard to marketing communications, but you will also hear this in our episode about running a restaurant with Matty O'Reilly, in our episodes about getting your dream job with Tamara Dennison, about strategy with Justin Royer, about self-organizing teams with Brad Walter, faking it until you make it with Jeff Kamin, and about the amazing job you don't know you're good at yet with Dena Alspach. I can't do this right now, I'm too tired, what if I fail? Typically when we're trying to do something new, or something that we feel that we have to do rather than what we want to be doing. This is one of the hardest hurdles to real change we'll ever face in life, and we often harm ourselves with our excuses. We've been building up to this episode over the last few weeks, because we have come across a remarkable number of friends who don't seem fulfilled or even remotely happy in their current positions, and we wanted to do something about it. We thought it would be important to first explore some things you can do to improve your situation, before making a call on whether to stay or quit your job. http://prohumans.com/episode-13-manag…ans-not-projects/ Today we're - FINALLY - going to answer the question, "Who is Mike Mason?" which is a question that has come up on almost every episode since about Episode 4 - so the last 6 or 8 of them. If you didn't hear it from the beginning, it started when we threw out a request on Facebook for listeners to contribute to our Random Question Jar that we do at the end of every show. Mike Mason had fired off several questions in a row, and then as a final question wrote, BTW Who is Mike Mason? to be funny. But we put that question in the jar, and the very next guest pulled that question. Somehow ever since then, Mike has made his way into every discussion and we are so, so delighted to finally have him here, in person, as a real live guest. Josh and Elli pull together some extra bits from both Episodes 5 & 6 and weave them into a Part 2 of Core Values. This time what we are really getting after is less about why they are important to your team (see Episode 6 for that) but HOW to implement them in your company. http://amzn.to/1NW4760 - Get Traction by Gino Wickman on Amazon.
