Today is Thursday, November 16th, and Happy Heavenly Birthday to Burgess Meredith. ***Rocky - You're a bum*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Jail Detainee Dies Fernando Carr, a 29-year-old detainee at Cobb County Adult Detention Center, died after experiencing chest pains and seizures. Carr had a documented heart condition and drug addiction. While in the recreation yard, he began having chest pains, was taken to the infirmary, and later experienced another episode. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The sheriff's office is awaiting autopsy results but has notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and will conduct an internal investigation. Carr was arrested on Nov. 1 for drug and weapons possession charges and was the 10th inmate to die in custody since Sheriff Craig Owens took office in 2021, the fifth this year. STORY 2: Marietta Man Killed Crossing Powder Springs Road A Marietta man, Henry J. Ducre, 58, was fatally struck by a 2015 Mercedes Benz ML350 driven by Antario D. Robertson, 40, while crossing Powder Springs Road near Curtis Lane outside a crosswalk at 4:51 a.m. Ducre was pronounced dead at the scene, and Robertson, driving south in the left lane, was unharmed. The Cobb Police Department is investigating the collision, urging anyone with information to contact investigators at 770-499-3987. STORY 3: Marietta Schools Eyes Heightened Security at Stadium The Marietta Board of Education is set to discuss new security measures for Northcutt Stadium, including the approval of a $117,000 weapons detection system, Opengate. The system, aimed at enhancing safety during large public events, can quickly screen for guns and large knives. Additionally, the board will review its legislative wish list for the upcoming Georgia General Assembly session, focusing on literacy initiatives. The priorities include increased budgetary support for literacy programs, a statewide literacy assessment for first and second graders, foundational training in structured literacy for teacher certification, and alignment of state pre-K curricula with the science of reading. The contentious book ban issue involving "Flamer" is not on the agenda. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – DAYCO STORY 4: Cobb Schools and Wellstar Announce $2 Million Partnership Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced a $2 million partnership between the school district and Wellstar Health System at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce's Marquee Monday luncheon. The initiative, named the Wellstar Healthcare Pathway Program, will focus on introducing students to healthcare careers and building a career pipeline. Wellstar's investment includes $2,500 college scholarships for students pursuing healthcare education. The partnership aims to connect students with Wellstar professionals and cutting-edge technology. During the "State of Education in Cobb" discussion, both Ragsdale and Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera highlighted challenges like school safety and the social-emotional aspect of students' lives, emphasizing the importance of addressing bullying and social media threats. Rivera praised Marietta's literacy gains, while Ragsdale promoted the Georgia's BEST program in Cobb, a partnership with the University of West Georgia to provide teachers with fully funded graduate education. STORY 5: Cobb Elections Board Certifies City Elections in 4-1 Vote In a 4-1 vote, the Cobb County Board of Elections certified the Nov. 7 municipal elections. The lone dissenting vote came from Cobb GOP appointee Debbie Fisher, who raised concerns about a six-vote discrepancy between the Georgia Registered Voter Information System (GARViS) and ePulse, a state election management program. The ePulse system failed to sync six votes with GARViS. The issue was manually resolved, but Fisher urged internal testing. Cobb GOP Chair Salleigh Grubbs requested a full hand recount, citing distrust in elections, but the request was denied based on rules and regulations. The certified results were approved despite concerns. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 4 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss cottage cheese. How do we align incentives so that organizations aggressively move us towards better societal outcomes in ways that our political class is unable or unwilling to do? How do we create and live into the potential of strengthening our communities from a place of “want to” rather than “need to”? Those are the questions that Nate Garvis has successfully answered for leaders in a wide spectrum of sectors over the past decades. As president of Naked Civics, LLC and author of Naked Civics: Strep Away the Politics to Build a Better World, Nate has constructed new pathways by furthering the framing of corporate social responsibility. His work transforms the landscape by tackling the dynamic and sometimes volatile world of social change with a distinct combination of strategies that combine elements of design thinking, entrepreneurial value creation, influencing methods, and market positioning for premium brand differentiation. Nate is also a co-founder of Studio/E and its propriety method of Exploratory Leadership, which has helped thousands of leaders and hundreds of organizations successfully operate in a global marketplace where accelerating change is outstripping the traditional strategies of prediction, planning, and managerial operations. As a founding Senior Fellow at the Lewis Institute Social Innovation Lab at Babson College, Nate has worked with countless business leaders, academics, and students in the pursuit of marrying value creation with community-based values. He has served on a number of academic, business, and non-profit boards including Allina Health, the Public Affairs Council, the College of Arts and Science at the University of St. Thomas, and Youth Frontiers. Prior to the creation of Naked Civics and Studio/E, Nate was Target Corporation's vice president of government affairs and senior civic officer where he stewarded that brand in the local, state, national, and international arenas. He has a degree in history from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from the University of Oregon. Nate's passion and purpose are to help leaders and organizations become active instruments in the creation of the common good and ensure that they get rewarded for their efforts. Harnessing the power of enterprise with the promise of designs that create prosperity beyond mere profit has been his aim. Creating new pathways where none existed before has been his method. Central Iowa author Tracey Garvis Graves joins the podcast for today's episode. Graves new book, The Girl He Used to Know, hits library shelves and bookstores everywhere on April 2. Graves is best well-known for her debut novel, On the Island. She initially self-published that book, and it eventually became a New York Times bestseller. Graves talks about the amazing journey On the Island took, one that landed her a full-time book deal. "I couldn't really wrap my brain around it," Graves says of the fact that she shared a bestsellers list on Amazon with books in The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey series. Her new book, The Girl He Used to Know, prominently features a character on the autism spectrum. Graves says she did a lot of work to make sure she was authentic in her dialogue and the actions of that character, Annika. "I read up to six nonfiction books about Asperger’s and being on the spectrum," she says. "Then I read a lot of blog posts and internet articles about what the spouses of people who are on the spectrum" love about their significant others and enjoy about their relationships.

It's week three of our Halloween movie festival and Garvis 3 has chosen Predator. With the thinnest of connections to the monster movie genre, he had best be prepared for some level 10 sarcasm from the rest of the crew. Plus new release news.
This week the CTC crew looks at S. Craig Zahler's grindhouse homage Brawl in Cell Block 99. This film from last year was a joyous surprise for Brett and now he's going to see what Garvis thinks of it. Plus new release news.
Happy Easter! What better way to celebrate than with a Technicolor Irving Berlin musical? This week Garvis and Brett discuss Easter Parade from 1948. Plus new release news and what we watched last week.
We are delighted to welcome our first guest, Dr. Ali Black (@draliblack), to the #InVinoFab: In Vino Fabulum [In Wine, Story] podcast! As our first audio-only visitor to the pod, we are excited to share more about Ali's stories, her work, and discuss being vulnerable in higher education. Ali describes this process of making sense of our lived experiences as a ‘soulful' experience that has brought joy to her academic life. She highlights the value of ethic of care, gentle writing, and the importance of deep, thoughtful writing work with The Women Who Write. These “wise women” felt empowered to do more, and can be found promoting how to savor slow scholarship, find support, become more self-aware, and stop living “thin lives” in academia with these key principles: We recognize the joy and pleasure of writing and responding We listen to our longings to care for ourselves and others We do not care for the auditing of the academic assembly line We choose connection We choose to be different - more ourselves - in academia Ali shared with us the #3Wedu The Women Who Write Manifesto:IMAGEThe Women Who Write: http://www.thewomenwhowrite.com/ A place to give feedback about ‘a conference' or ‘conferencing' http://www.thewomenwhowrite.com/conference.html Final Abstract: Exploring Ideas About Thoughtful GatheringsThe Res-sisters are a feminist collective of early career academics. Richard talks to Mitch Garvis about his experiences comparing vSphere and Hyper-V. Which one is better? Mitch gets right to the point - they're both incredibly capable virtualization solutions. It's all about the tools around the hypervisor - whether that's vSphere on the VMWare side and System Center on the Microsoft side. So they both have their merits, but Mitch is all about Hyper-V. The conversation dives deep on the evolution of IT using virtualization, not just in the data center, but all the way out to the desktop.

Richard talks to Mitch Garvis about System Center Essentials (SCE). SCE brings the power of System Center Configuration Manager, Operations Manager and Virtual Machine Manager to the small-to-medium business. It limits to 50 servers (physical and virtual) and 500 workstations - plenty for lots of businesses! Mitch digs into a few tricks of the trade for being successful with SCE - check out his blog post on installing System Center Essentials. SCE is the tool you wish you knew about, now have a listen and you will!
Även i Sverige. Vi får även höra modeskaparen Elin Eng berätta om sin utställning Suitable Suits - Infatuated by the holy quest of growth. Och så har vi träffat Maria Sjödin som designar kläder för en ny generation kvinnliga präster. Veckans gäst är Reidun Boëthius, före detta flygvärdinna och samlare av flygvärdinneuniformer från SAS.
While at Tech Ed Atlanta, Richard talked to Mitch Garvis about Hyper-V. Mitch focuses on how Hyper-V has caught up with VMWare feature wise. The conversation ranges over what should be virtualized, what shouldn't, and the role the cloud plays in virtualization.
Richard and Greg talk to Mitch Garvis about the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010. MDT 2010 helps you manage your installs of operating systems, drivers, applications and more. You can create deployment kits for machines quickly and easily. And as Mitch says, as soon as you have more than one computer, the effort to set up MDT 2010 is worth it. MDT 2010 is a freely downloadable toolkit here.
Richard and Greg talk to Mitch Garvis about System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). SCVMM handles Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) migration of computers into virtual machines. It also does Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) migration from VMWare VMDK to VHD. Besides migration, SCVMM allows operators to understand the load across different VM host machines and move VMs from one machine to another, to handle failover clustering and to provision new VMs as needed.
Mitch Garvis talks to Richard and Greg about Microsoft Business Desktop Deployment (BDD). BDD is the evolution of earlier versions, along side products like SMS, Vista and Office to do zero touch and light touch deployments of operating systems and applications.
