Bob sits down with economists Alexander Salter and Joshua Hendrickson to discuss their new paper arguing that the standard Austrian critique of the Fed while correct, is fundamentally incomplete. They argue that the Fed's actual institutional role is to backstop U.S. dollar hegemony: the deliberately constructed post-Bretton Woods system in which the dollar serves as the world's reserve currency, U.S. Treasuries as the global safe asset, and the Fed as buyer of last resort for sovereign debt worldwide.Related:Hendrickson & Salter, "Should We End the Fed? The Real Job of Leadership in Technical Teams with Nancy Cable

Most people think leadership in technical companies is about being the most knowledgeable person in the room. Knowing the answers, setting the direction, and solving the hardest problems yourself. But the longer you spend actually doing the job, the more obvious it becomes that this is almost never what matters. The real challenge is much simpler to describe and much harder to execute. Getting people aligned on what actually matters, making sure they're working on the right problems, and then building the environment where they can keep improving how they do it. Most teams don't fail because they lack talent, they fail because they slowly drift away from focus without realizing it.In this episode, I sit down with Nancy Cable, Senior Director of Manufacturing at Ursa Major, to talk about what leadership actually looks like inside a fast-scaling aerospace company. We get into how she thinks about building and scaling manufacturing systems, why hiring for attitude and initiative matters more than pure technical skill in her world, and how she thinks about managing teams that are growing quickly in both size and complexity.A big theme in this conversation is the tension between chaos and structure. In an environment where teams are building real hardware fast, it's easy to get pulled into constant tactical firefighting. The real leadership challenge is knowing when to step into that chaos, and when to step back and make sure the system is actually scaling in the right direction.Episode Highlights00:00 Setting the stage for leadership in aerospace01:00 From Propulsion to Scalable Aerospace Manufacturing 04:24 Inside Manufacturing at Ursa Major07:10 How Leaders Show Up, Not What They Represent09:54 Building teams with emotional and technical diversity13:14 The mistake of treating everyone the same18:05 Hiring for initiative over pure technical ability20:59 Why Hiring Isn't About Finding Perfect People24:06 Culture screening and the ‘airport test28:57 Balancing chaos vs structure in fast-moving teams30:57 Staying grounded when everything feels tacticalKey TakeawaysLeadership is not about having all the answers, it is about making sure the team is working on the right things. Most teams do not fail from lack of talent, they fail from lack of focus and alignment.Hiring for initiative and attitude matters more than purely technical skill in fast moving environments.Scaling is not just doing more work, it is building systems that can handle growth without losing speed or clarity.Great leaders do not create answers, they create environments where better answers surface and get used.Culture is not a one time screen, it is reinforced through every hire, decision, and interaction. The real challenge of leadership is balancing chaos and structure without losing direction.Links & ResourcesNancy CableLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/nancy-cable-583929b Matt GjertsenWebsite: https://www.bettereverydaystudios.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewgjertsen/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BetterEveryDayStudios

Most leaders think their job is complicated. It's not. I tend to break it down into three things: get people working together, get them working on the right things, and improve the work over time. The problem is that second one. Getting people focused on the right things sounds simple, but in practice, it's where most teams fall apart. In this episode, I sit down with Matt Gialich, CEO of AstroForge, to talk about what that actually looks like inside a company trying to do something insanely hard, mining asteroids in deep space. We get into how he unexpectedly became CEO, why the job is less about vision and more about doing whatever needs to get done, and how easy it is for teams to drift even when everyone is talented and working hard.A big theme throughout this conversation is focus vs overengineering. Engineers naturally want to go beyond the requirement, make things stronger, better, more robust. But that almost always comes at the cost of speed. And in environments like space or startups, speed is not optional, it is the advantage. Learning faster, iterating faster, and actually shipping matters more than building something “perfect.”We also talk about fear, how it shows up in teams, how it leads to overthinking and unnecessary work, and why staying close to the actual mission is the only real way to fight it. No frameworks, no hacks. Just being in the room, talking to people, and constantly reinforcing what actually matters. If you are leading a team, especially in a fast moving or technical environment, this is really a conversation about what the job actually is and what it is not.Episode Highlights00:00 What it actually means to be a CEO03:40 AstroForge Didn't Start in Space, It Started as a Submarine Company07:54 Building Somebody Else's Company15:30 The “overengineering problem” in technical teams13:42 Monthly Calendar Audit for Cutting Out Noise18:49 Why Small Teams Overbuild Instead of Staying Focused23:12 Speed, Fear, and Why Iteration Beats Perfection 27:28 Flight Cadence, Failure, and Why Speed Beats Perfection in Space 31:45 Execution, Auditing Reality, and the First Deep Space MissionsKey TakeawaysA CEO's job is not abstract vision, it is execution on whatever increases enterprise valueSmall teams don't fail from lack of talent, they fail from lack of focusEngineers naturally optimize beyond requirements, but that often slows down learning and iterationSpeed is not just execution, it is a way to reduce risk over timeFear inside teams often shows up as overthinking or overbuildingThe real job of leadership is constantly reinforcing what matters and removing noiseYou do not scale alignment with frameworks, you scale it with repetition and presenceMost organizational problems are actually prioritization problems in disguiseLinks & ResourcesMatt GialichLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-gialichAstroForgeWebsite: https://www.astroforge.com/about-usMatt GjertsenWebsite: https://www.bettereverydaystudios.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewgjertsen/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BetterEveryDayStudios

What does it take to run investor relations for one of the most recognized brands in America — a company that's been public for nearly 150 years, serves tens of millions of customers, and is under constant scrutiny from investors, regulators, and the public alike? Today's guest, Brett Feldman, has the answer. As Senior Vice President — Investor Relations and Treasurer at AT&T, Brett oversees IR for a company with a market cap north of $175 billion and a retail investor base that makes up roughly a third of its shareholders — many of whom are also AT&T customers. Brett brings a perspective that's genuinely rare in IR: he started his career in IR, spent 20 years as a sell-side equity analyst, and returned to the corporate side. That full-circle experience shapes how he thinks about everything from analyst relationships to internal communications to the fundamental purpose of an investor relations function. In this conversation, Brett and Mark Fasken go deep on what it really means to align perception and reality — and why getting that wrong has a measurable cost to your company's shareholders. Listen to the full episode to learn more about: The financial case for investor relations — and why volatility is the metric that matters How AT&T communicates consistently across investors, regulators, employees, and customers The internal IR work that most companies overlook What the sell side actually cares about (and what IROs misunderstand) Why smaller companies should build relationships with analysts who are obsessed with their business — not just the ones with the biggest brand names Winning IR is brought to you by Irwin. As AI accelerates, many leadership conversations focus on tools, efficiency, and productivity. This episode of Partnering Leadership takes a different approach. Host Mahan Tavakoli is joined by Andrea Iorio, a global AI thought leader, former senior executive at Tinder and L'Oréal, and the author of Between You and AI.Andrea brings a rare combination of global operating experience, deep technology fluency, and philosophical clarity to the conversation. Rather than asking how leaders can use AI better, he challenges a more uncomfortable question: what still belongs uniquely to human leadership when machines increasingly outperform us at speed, scale, and analysis.Throughout the discussion, Andrea and Mahan explore why AI is not “coming for jobs,” but for tasks, and how that distinction changes the leadership equation. They examine the risks leaders face when productivity gains mask a deeper erosion of judgment, accountability, and strategic clarity. The conversation surfaces how easy it is for leaders to outsource responsibility to systems that feel objective, confident, and precise. The episode also confronts the hidden consequences of hyper-optimization. While AI can dramatically increase control and efficiency, Andrea argues that leaders must decide where judgment, agency, and human responsibility still matter most. From decision-making and talent development to trust, empathy, and innovation, the discussion highlights the leadership work that cannot be automated without cost. This is a thoughtful, grounded conversation for leaders who sense that AI is reshaping not just work, but the very nature of leadership itself—and who want to stay accountable, relevant, and human in the process.Actionable TakeawaysYou'll learn why AI is changing leadership less by replacing people and more by redefining which tasks still require human judgment.Hear how relying on AI for productivity can quietly reduce differentiation when everyone has access to the same tools.Discover why leadership accountability cannot be delegated, even when decisions are automated. You'll hear how past success can become a liability when leaders stop questioning assumptions that once worked.Learn why AI literacy is not technical mastery, but understanding where data, questions, and outputs can mislead.Hear how hyper-optimization can narrow what organizations notice and weaken learning over time.Understand why the “human-in-the-loop” is about responsibility, not distrust of technology.Explore how leaders can use time saved through automation to strengthen judgment rather than accelerate busywork.Learn what thriving organizations do differently as they design hybrid teams of humans and intelligent systems.Connect with Andrea IorioAndrea Iorio WebsiteAndrea Iorio LinkedInBetween You and AI: Unlock the Power of Human Skills to Thrive in an AI-Driven WorldConnect with Mahan Tavakoli: Mahan Tavakoli Website Mahan Tavakoli on LinkedIn Partnering Leadership Website

I'm saying the quiet part out loud: if you don't build your sales muscle, growth stalls - no matter how talented you are. In this episode, Julia Arpag, CEO and Founder of Aligned Recruitment, shares with me how she went from five weeks postpartum and laid off to building a seven-figure tech recruitment firm by treating selling as service, investing early in mentorship, and using LinkedIn + networking like a real funnel.Julia's journey began in August 2023 when she was unexpectedly laid off while on maternity leave. What could have been a destabilizing moment became the catalyst for something extraordinary. While briefly accepting a W-2 role, she started selling for a friend's startup recruitment venture on the side. Within months, she closed three retainer clients. That early traction forced a pivotal decision: continue playing it safe, or step fully into entrepreneurship despite fears around sales, taxes, and “not knowing enough.” She chose the leap. Rather than trying to figure everything out alone, Julia invested her earliest earnings into mentorship by hiring an executive coach who had sold a recruitment agency for $28 million, a LinkedIn writing coach, and systems experts. Inspired by Carol Dweck's Mindset and the philosophy of “Who Not How,” she built her sales muscle, reframed selling as service, and adopted a growth mindset that became foundational to Aligned Recruitment's rapid success. She reminds us that for women entrepreneurs especially, seeking support is often the difference between staying small and scaling meaningfully. We also explored Julia's tactical wisdom as a recruiter, including why job seekers should treat their search like a sales funnel, how to optimize LinkedIn to be discovered, and why networking consistently outperforms cold online applications. At a deeper level, Julia challenges the idea that business success must come at the cost of personal well-being. Her philosophy is clear: build a business around your life, not the other way around. This conversation is a powerful reminder for all of us that profitability, purpose, and peace can coexist. Tune in to hear my conversation with Julia Arpag and how she is redefining what it looks like for women to lead, sell, and scale without losing themselves in the process. Chapters: 01:12

In this special Thanksgiving edition of This Old Marketing, Joe and Robert dive into the future of AI and what it really means for marketers, creators, and anyone trying to build an audience in the next few years. The boys explore how long traditional marketing roles will remain intact and why we may be much closer to a tipping point than most people want to believe. The Window Is Closing Joe and Robert revisit a theme they've both been writing about lately: the shrinking window of time before AI reshapes content, distribution, and discoverability. They break down what creators and marketers can still do right now to secure their position before the landscape shifts for good. Their take: you have a few years. Maybe less. And waiting is not a strategy. The Real Job of the Future In a world where AI generates nearly everything instantly, Joe and Robert ask the big question: what will the actual marketing job look like five or ten years from now? The answer isn't another technical role. It isn't prompt engineering. It isn't "AI operations." The position of the future is rooted in skills AI can't replicate: Being known personally by real people Building in-person trust Hosting gatherings, leading communities, and showing up in the real world Connecting human beings to human beings If AI floods the world with infinite content, the new scarcity becomes physical presence. What Creators Must Do Next The boys outline the shift every marketer and content entrepreneur must make: from chasing reach to cultivating real connections. From relying on platforms to building owned audiences. From algorithmic exposure to human relationships that cannot be automated. This special episode is a wake-up call and a roadmap rolled into one. Why This Matters Right Now Thanksgiving is a time for reflection, and the episode closes with Joe and Robert reminding listeners that the next few years are arguably the most important years in the history of marketing. In this episode of The Fractional CMO Show, Casey Stanton tackles a question many marketers quietly ask: Is being a fractional CMO even a real job? Through sharp insights and personal reflection, Casey makes the case that the corporate "safety net" is long gone—and that the real opportunity lies in betting on yourself. He explores why today's market pressures—from AI disruption to global competition—are pushing corporate marketers to rethink their path, and how the fractional CMO model offers freedom, financial stability, and long-term upside. Casey shares the story of his father's career at IBM, lessons on mediating structures, and the mindset shift required to build your own future instead of relying on outdated systems. Whether you're in a corporate seat wondering if you're next on the layoff list or ready to lead multiple clients with confidence, this episode gives you a roadmap to independence, relevance, and sustainable growth. Key Topics Covered: -Why the corporate "safety net" is an illusion in 2025 -The hidden dangers of staying too long in a corporate role -How AI and global labor shifts are transforming the marketing landscape -What it really means to be a fractional CMO (and why it's safer than a 9–5) -Why commitment and community matter more than credentials -The future of fractional leadership—and why 2026 will be a breakout year -How to build long-term wealth and low-anxiety success as a CMO

He's Wayne Faust, a man who hasn't held a real job in 50 years. This is part II of our conversation about those 5 decades. It's not easy to describe Wayne Faust's stage presence.  He evokes shades of Harry Chapin, Jim Stafford, Steve Martin, and Ray Stevens.  He dares to make audience interaction a substantial part of his show, including on-the-spot song compositions about his delighted patrons.  It is easier to state that our guest has for over five decades successfully entertained people across America and overseas. Wayne is a Renaissance man whose creativity includes playing multiple instruments, composing songs that range from novelty to nostalgia to inspiring, and authoring multiple novels.  Join me for a conversation with a performer who is genuine, talented, and gifted in spreading joy. Dave Hill seamlessly blends virtuosic guitar playing with razor-sharp comedy, creating an entirely unique performance experience that defies categorization. In this captivating conversation with Greg Koch, Dave reveals the unexpected path that led him from his Cleveland roots as a rock musician to becoming a multifaceted comedian, author, and performer in New York City. The heart of Dave's artistic evolution came when he discovered audiences found genuine humor in his guitar prowess. "When I realized that people were laughing at guitar solos—not in a mocking way—I started doing things like tapping," Dave explains. This revelation transformed his approach, allowing him to stretch 10 minutes of material into 20 while "getting laughs in different ways" and developing his signature style of berating his backing musicians between impressive solos. What makes Dave's performances particularly fascinating is his "Chuck Berry style" approach to working with local musicians. Often meeting his backing band just hours (or sometimes minutes) before showtime, he transforms this unpredictability into comedic gold. Whether performing with legendary musicians like Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or with drummers who "own drums at best," Dave embraces the chaos as part of his art form. The conversation drifts through numerous fascinating detours, from their shared Catholic upbringings to the unpredictable nature of social media virality. Dave shares stories about opening for Tenacious D in arenas, writing four books, and crafting the theme song for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver with his band Valley Lodge. Through it all, his creative philosophy remains refreshingly simple: "You really can only entertain yourself... anytime you're thinking 'what do people want,' that's not part of the equation."Follow Dave on social media for his hilarious "fake commercials" and check out his band Valley Lodge for a taste of his musical side. As Dave puts it: "I'm feral, this is what I do... now I just have to ride it out until I die, because that's the only option really."
