The 10-Car Crash That Exposed Her Secret Addiction w/ Elisa Saunders | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this episode of the Hopeaholics Podcast, Elisa Saunders shares an incredibly raw story of addiction, trauma, survival, and the long road to recovery after decades of chaos behind the scenes of both alcoholism and the treatment industry. Elisa spent nearly 30 years drinking while maintaining the image of a functioning professional, all while cycling through alcohol, Xanax, cocaine, and the kind of self-destruction that nearly killed her. She opens up about the pain of childhood abuse, the emotional wounds that followed her into adulthood, and how addiction became both an escape and a prison she couldn't break free from. The conversation dives into her time working in the treatment world during some of its most corrupt years, where she witnessed body brokering, fraud, and the exploitation of vulnerable people seeking help. Elisa also shares the terrifying consequences of her own addiction, including a DUI, a devastating ten-car pileup, and the moment she realized she was either going to get sober or die. Even after getting clean, she reveals the brutal emotional reality of early recovery, including the shame, depression, and suicidal thoughts she had to fight through without numbing herself. Today, Elisa uses her story and experience to advocate for ethical treatment, real recovery, and better solutions for people trapped in addiction.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. Late on a quiet Sunday night in May, gardaí in Limerick arrived on the scene of what they expected would be a routine call-out to a road traffic incident.Instead they were met with an extraordinary scene. In one of the damaged cars they found a dead man on the back seat. He was wearing a balaclava and there was a loaded pistol at his feet. The driver of the anonymous looking Seat Leon had escaped, leaving his phone behind. The Garda quickly established that the dead man was a Swedish hitman and the pair were in Limerick for a contract killing. They were just minutes from their victim. But who was the target? Has there been a resurgence in the deadly feuding that blighted Limerick for years? Where is the hitman who fled the scene and why has the manhunt for him been so muted?Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally reports on the latest in this most unusual case.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Mark Ezzell, Director of the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program, was in his early 20s when his father, Sen. Jim Ezzell, died on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh on the eve of session starting in 1991. That loss not only changed Mark's life forever, it also created an opening in the North Carolina Senate for a young House member named Roy Cooper. But this story is about more than politics, it's also about perseverance and grace. Senator Ezzell, who lived with cerebral palsy, and his wife made the intentional decision to adopt a child with a disability. At age eight, Mark was adopted from foster care and welcomed into a family that saw his potential, not his limitations. Born with spina bifida, Mark has spent his life navigating challenges from a wheelchair while building a successful career in public service, including his work today of preventing highway fatalities. Plus, Skye and Brian unpack another busy week: state budget negotiations continue, a moratorium on certain property tax increases heads to Governor Stein's desk, political news, a state senator has his eyes on a mayor's office, and graduation ceremonies are getting out of hand. 19 year old Davion Flanagan's family and 20 year old Dominic Russo's family want to know what the hell happened that morning. How could 17 year old Mackenzie Shirilla drive her car straight into a brick building at 100 mph killing their two boys? How could she be the sole survivor? This is the case of Mackenzie Shirilla who used a high speed, intentional motor vehicle collision to end the lives of her longterm boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend/roommate at the time, Davion Flanagan. After the release of Netflix's documentary, 'The Crash,' interest surrounding the case grew but audiences were left with more questions about the fuller picture. Naturally, we FOIA requested this case to the authorities and received: Over 4 thousand videos. Over 4 thousand photos. Around 31 thousand pages of text messages. Around 92 thousand text messages between just Mackenzie and Dominic. Close to 800 text messages between Mackenzie and her father, Steve Shirilla. Close to 2 thousand text messages between Mackenzie and her close friends. As well as 2 thousand pages of Instagram DMs. 2 entire phone data extraction files with hundreds of personal videos, photos, and audio messages. And 97 jail calls from Mackenzie post-conviction. We have gone through all of it and we're here to break it down for you. Full show notes available at RottenMangoPodcast.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
In Lonoke County, Arkansas, a judge found that investigators' handling of evidence in Aaron Spencer's murder case was "so egregious" the prosecution had to be dismissed. The dashcam SD card that could have told the whole story was handled in violation of department policy and lost. Spencer, who killed the man accused of crimes against his daughter, was running for sheriff against the incumbent whose deputies mishandled the evidence. The court used the word "coverup."In Strongsville, Ohio, Mackenzie Shirilla's car did what she wouldn't — it recorded the final seconds before she drove into a brick building at close to a hundred miles per hour, killing Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. She never talked to police. On monitored jail calls, she and her mother used a coded language that investigators cracked, allegedly revealing a plan to fabricate a seizure defense. On the Carnival Horizon, the FBI built a case against Timothy Hudson using DNA that points to him with 120 sextillion-to-one certainty in the death of his eighteen-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner. But the lead agent couldn't confirm under oath whether DNA was collected from Anna's neck — the area linked to the cause of her death. The judge allowed Hudson to remain free on bond.Three investigations. Three evidence failures. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and retired FBI Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program Chief Robin Dreeke join Tony Brueski for an extended conversation on what happens when the people tasked with delivering justice are the ones whose work breaks down — and what the FBI sees in each of these cases that the public doesn't.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Building a double murder case without a confession, without testimony, and without a single statement from the defendant requires investigators to let the evidence speak for itself. In Mackenzie Shirilla's case, the evidence was devastating.A car's data recorder showed the accelerator pushed to full capacity with zero braking, approaching a hundred miles per hour aimed at a building. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle driving normally through a residential area before an abrupt, deliberate acceleration. Shirilla had driven that dead-end route days earlier — a road she didn't normally take. Weeks before the crash, she'd told her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, she would "crash this car right now." Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene. The behavioral evidence was equally striking. On monitored jail calls, Shirilla and her mother used a coded language investigators cracked — allegedly revealing Shirilla asking if they could claim she'd suffered a seizure. That claim became the defense's central argument: that a condition called POTS had caused Shirilla to black out. No medical records or expert testimony confirmed the diagnosis. Prosecutors argued that sustained pressure on an accelerator in a controlled straight line was inconsistent with unconsciousness.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, who spent years working complex federal cases, and retired FBI Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program Chief Robin Dreeke join Tony Brueski to analyze how investigators evaluate physical evidence versus behavioral evidence, what a data recorder actually proves about a driver's state of mind, and how a decoded private language can become the most critical piece of a circumstantial murder case.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Send us Fan MailThis is a curious case. July 2023, a car mounts a pavement and crashes into a school injuring a number of people and killing two 8 year old girls who were all standing on a lawn in the school grounds. There seems to be a news blackout after initial reports.A year later, 2024, The Crown Prosecution Service says there will be no further action as it was a result of a medical emergency. There was public puzzlement, two girls killed, ten people injured, no-one held responsible?April 2026 it was announced that there was a reinvestigation, the original police officers investigating the case are also being investigated for gross misconduct and the CPS are reconsidering their decision. This all against a backdrop of suggestions of one law for the rich and another for everyone else.

A Note from James:This is why I love doing podcasts—talking to people like Dr. Sheena Howard, author of Why Wakanda Matters. Wakanda is the country where Black Panther is from, and Sheena has written extensively about comics, including work on Black Panther itself. We talk about comics, race, and storytelling. I asked a question I was almost afraid to ask—whether the Black Panther movie was racist against other Black people—and she gave a surprising answer. We also talk about a time she was abducted in Jamaica, along with a lot of other topics.I loved this conversation. Please listen. Episode Description:James sits down with Dr. Sheena Howard—scholar, comic book writer, and Eisner Award winner—for a conversation that moves between pop culture, publishing, and personal survival. They use Black Panther as a lens to examine how stories shape identity, how representation evolves, and why cultural narratives are often filtered through systems that weren't built to support them. Sheena breaks down the tension between nationalism and isolationism in Wakanda, and why audiences interpret the same story in radically different ways. The conversation also goes deeper—into how gatekeeping works in publishing today, how creators can bypass it, and why building your own audience may be the most reliable path forward. And then there's the story she didn't tell for years: being abducted at 19. What happened, why she stayed silent, and what it reveals about psychology, fear, and resilience. This episode is about storytelling—but also about control: who has it, who doesn't, and how to take it back. What You'll Learn:Why “Black superheroes don't sell” is a myth—and how the industry perpetuates it anywayThe real gatekeeping mechanism in publishing today (and why audience ownership matters more than ever)How subtle bias shows up now—not in obvious barriers, but in shifting goalpostsWhat makes a story resonate across audiences (and why Black Panther worked at scale)The psychology of abusive situations—and how awareness and boundaries are built over timeTimestamped Chapters:[03:04] A Note from James[03:53] Favorite Superheroes: From Captain America to Black Panther[04:27] Why Black Panther Connected Culturally[04:43] The $1.2B Question: Why So Late for Black Superheroes?[05:17] Luke Cage, Netflix, and the “Myth” That Black Stories Don't Sell[05:39] Tyler Perry and the “Outlier” Problem[06:23] Pressure on Black-Led Films to Be Perfect[07:00] What Wakanda Represents (Uncolonized Possibility)[07:53] Killmonger: Anger, Oppression, and Relatability[08:23] MLK vs. Malcolm X Parallel in Black Panther[09:00] Identity Formation: African vs. African American Perspectives[09:47] Are Black Superheroes Designed to “Feel Safe”?[10:28] Gentrification, Stereotypes, and Media Influence[11:50] Media Isn't “Just Entertainment”[12:00] Early Representation and Cultural Messaging[12:28] Who Created Black Panther—and Why That Matters[13:07] Rewriting History: What Would She Change?[13:49] Designing a Modern Black Superhero[14:47] Why a Modern Hero Might Be “Invisible”[15:44] Publishing Barriers and Gatekeeping Conversations[16:36] Social Media vs. Traditional Publishing Access[17:26] Building 163K Followers—and Still Not Enough[21:47] The Instagram Post: “I Was Abducted at 19”[22:11] How It Started: Cheap Tour, No Money, Bad Decision[23:05] The Trap: Locked House and Escalation[25:00] Refusal and Survival Strategy[26:02] Car Crash and Escape Attempt[27:00] Walking Away and Getting Home[28:30] Why She Stayed Silent for Years[29:20] Abusive Relationships and Self-Blame[30:26] Leaving Abuse: The Role of Her Son[31:06] Love Bombing and Early Warning Signs[33:02] Recognizing Red Flags in Relationships[35:45] Teaching Kids Boundaries and Self-Worth[37:21] “Is Wakanda Racist?”—The Big Question[38:00] Nationalism vs. Racism Explained[39:00] Isolationism vs. Imperialism[41:00] Why Some Black Superheroes Don't Break Out[43:00] The Loss (and Survival) of Great Storytelling[46:14] How She Got Hired by Marvel (Cold Email + PI)[48:29] Why Pitching Ideas to Marvel Often Fails[50:00] Cold Outreach: Being Seen Before Heard[52:00] Do You Need Social Media to Sell Books? During the crash he experienced a vivid life review, seeing his entire life from birth through the present. Miraculously, he survived with only minor injuries, but the event triggered a deep spiritual search that led him into meditation traditions from both Eastern practices and the mystical teachings of Kabbalah. Director John Huston lived the adventurous life that was frequently depicted in his movies. As a young man, he was made an honorary lieutenant in the Mexican army. He was nearly shot during a poker game and challenged to a duel in the middle of the street. His thrill-seeking antics soon turned fatal, when he accidentally struck and killed a woman with his car while driving down Sunset Boulevard. He ran off to London to lay low, but soon found himself with no job, no money, no prospects–and no choice but to live on the streets and beg for change.
