Joe Kuhn, CMRP, former plant manager, engineer, and global reliability consultant, is now president of Lean Driven Reliability LLC. He is the author of the book “Zero to Hero: How to Jumpstart Your Reliability Journey Given Today's Business Challenges” and the creator of the Joe Kuhn YouTube Channel, which offers content on starting your reliability journey and achieving financial independence. In our monthly podcast miniseries, Ask a Plant Manager, Joe considers a commonplace scenario facing the industry and offers his advice, as well as actions that you can take to get on track tomorrow. This episode explains some of the problems that can go wrong when you are starting your reliability journey, and what folks should be on the lookout for along the way. Key takeaways Prioritize reliability by choosing where to excel—get a C on less critical tasks to focus on what truly drives plant performance. Reliability success demands active operations ownership—learn failures, engage on the floor, and earn credibility. Promote small wins visibly—selling reliability outcomes prevents loss of sponsorship and ensures long-term buy-in. Without structured problem-solving, best practices fall short—embed it into your process to triple reliability results.

He explains how consistent actions, rather than sporadic bursts of motivation, are what ultimately lead to business growth and success.Mark opens the episode by challenging entrepreneurs to shift their focus from seeking motivation to fostering consistency. In this episode of "Cocoon Conversations" on the Career Flipper podcast, I, Jenny Dempsey, take you along on my career journey. This year, I've committed to opening up about my own career flip, just as I encourage my guests to do. So here we are, in May 2025, and I can hardly believe it's been four months since I started my current day job. It feels surreal to say that, especially considering I was laid off for two years before this.During this time, I've been balancing my full-time job with furniture restoration on the side, dedicating Sundays to it, and squeezing in podcasting and all the related tasks whenever I can. If that sounds overwhelming, it is! Life can be a juggling act, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. Scheduling time with friends often feels like a game of Tetris, as we all navigate our busy lives.I've always been the type of person who thrives on variety. I'm the one multitasking—doing laundry while putting away dishes, preparing to record a podcast, creating social media content for my furniture flipping page, and making sure my dog, Dwight, gets outside for a potty break. My brain has always thrived on this mix of activities, and I've been like this for as long as I can remember.Looking back, I've come to realize something significant. For a long time, I believed that work—capital W work—was my identity. I thought it was the only thing I was good at. I didn't believe in taking vacations; if I did, I'd bring my laptop along and continue working. I even had a panic attack in front of a customer service team I was managing because I was so consumed by my job. I poured everything into my work, only to learn the hard way that companies would replace me in an instant. When I was laid off and struggled to find a new job for two years, I was left questioning my identity. Who was I if I wasn't working?I dive into this and more in the episode! Legal and Strategic Insights on Chinese Investment in the U.S. with Chris PereiraWelcome to another insightful episode of the Asia Business Podcast, this week we have Chris Pereira, CEO of iMpact, a strategic advisory firm dedicated to assisting Chinese companies in global expansion. In this episode, Art and Chris engage in a candid discussion about the intricate challenges and opportunities Chinese companies face when entering the US market. The Current Landscape of US-China RelationsWith ongoing tensions between the US and China, businesses are navigating a complicated environment filled with tariffs, political tweets, and fluctuating regulations. The conversation opens with Chris highlighting that while tariffs remain a prominent topic, Chinese companies are more concerned with the stability of US regulations and policies, especially under an unpredictable political climate.Legal Concerns for Chinese BusinessesChris shares how his clients often question the potential risks associated with significant investments in the US. Art weighs in on the legal perspective, clarifying that while tweets may generate headlines, they have no legal standing. He reassures that even amidst political rhetoric, the US legal system maintains checks and balances that protect businesses from arbitrary decisions.Importance of Localizing Business EffortsThe discussion turns to the critical need for Chinese companies to localize efforts when establishing a presence in the US. Art and Chris emphasize the grassroots approach required to build local community relationships, often overlooked by companies accustomed to China's top-down decision-making processes. Understanding local governance and community impact is essential for success. The Political and Economic Impacts of TariffsTariffs, while significant, have not deterred Chinese companies from pursuing opportunities in the US market. Chris explains that many businesses manage to adapt their strategies, focusing on enhancing brand positioning as opposed to competing solely on price. Art adds that while tariffs can create uncertainties, they also encourage innovation and resilience among Chinese firms. The COVID-19 Aftermath and Geopolitical ConcernsChris expresses surprise at the continued discussions around COVID-19 within Chinese media, particularly in the context of legal actions against China. Art offers a legal interpretation, suggesting that lawsuits targeting governmental entities rather than private companies carry more symbolic meaning than enforceable outcomes.Future Outlook on US-China Business DynamicsDespite current challenges, both Art and Chris acknowledge an underlying optimism among Chinese businesses. The focus on strategic localization, investment in automation, and diversification into alternate markets like Southeast Asia and Europe signify adaptability and resilience. Art predicts a continued shift towards manufacturing localization in the US, driven by automation and stable regulatory environments.Final Insights and Moving ForwardAs the episode concludes, Art and Chris reflect on the shifting landscape of global business and the importance of adaptability and strategic foresight. The complexities of US-China relations underscore the need for businesses to remain informed and agile, leveraging diplomacy and legal expertise to navigate these uncertain waters.Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:36 Challenges and Opportunities for Chinese Companies in the US02:01 Legal Concerns and Tariffs06:34 Localizing Business Operations09:19 COVID-19 Lawsuits and Geopolitical Issues16:02 Tariff Situation and Future Outlook18:31 Brand Focus Over Price Competition19:06 Impact of Tariffs on Consumers and Suppliers20:44 China's Resilience and Market Shifts23:06 US Manufacturing and Investment Trends28:24 Automation and Complex Supply Chains31:17 Biotech and Pharma Industry Dynamics34:50 Concluding Thoughts and Future Outlook ProducerJacob ThomasFollow UsLinkedInApple Podcasts

You're not supposed to be good at everything. But somehow, Alli is.Architect, landscape architect, developer, GC, policy reformer, zoning translator, builder of teams, builder of trust, builder of actual buildings-it's no wonder we spent the first five minutes of this episode just trying to list all the roles she plays. In this conversation, Alli joins me to talk about what it means to be a true generalist in an era obsessed with specialization. We cover her journey from flipping houses as a teenager to running a growing team at Flintlock Lab, directing the Incremental Development Alliance, and quietly (or not so quietly) reshaping how development works across the country-starting in her hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas. We dig into building science, incremental housing, the limits of Revit, and why being a builder makes you a better architect (and vice versa). But we also get into the harder stuff-like learning to lead, facing city bureaucracy, and what to do when the guy reviewing your permit might genuinely want to run you over with his truck. This one's as practical as it is philosophical, and it left me feeling more hopeful-and a little more fired up-about what's still possible if we're willing to roll up our sleeves and terraform our own backyards.CHAPTERS00:00 Community Engagement and Local Impact02:51 The Multifaceted Career of Ali05:51 Navigating Development and Housing Challenges09:09 The Unique Economy of Fayetteville11:56 Balancing Growth and Community Needs14:57 Career Trajectory and Intentionality18:06 Building Science and Sustainable Practices20:49 Design-Build Workflow and Efficiency24:07 Entrepreneurial Spirit in Development31:57 The Design-Build Approach: Learning Through Doing34:51 Scaling Up: The Challenges of Growth39:10 Understanding the Market: Design Meets Demand41:55 Terraforming Communities: The Role of Local Investment44:11 Building a Culture of Collaboration: The Fayetteville Experience49:50 Changing the Narrative: Zoning and Community Engagement57:04 Navigating Conflict: Building Relationships with City Staff01:08:20 Building Relationships in Local Governance01:15:06 Navigating Conflict with City Staff01:20:01 Growing a Business: Challenges and Changes01:26:09 Tools and Software for Efficiency01:34:00 Learning from Failures and GrowthCONNECT WITH AlliFlintlock Lab: flintlocklab.comIncremental Development Alliance: incrementaldevelopment.orgInstagram: @flintlocklabLinkedIn: Alli's ProfileCONNECT WITH AUSTIN TUNNELLNewsletter: https://playbook.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/austintunnell/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-tunnell-2a41894a/ https://twitter.com/AustinTunnellCONNECT WITH BUILDING CULTUREhttps://www.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/buildingculture/ https://twitter.com/build_culture https://www.facebook.com/BuildCulture/ SPONSORSThank you so much to the sponsors of The Building Culture Podcast!Sierra Pacific Windows: https://www.sierrapacificwindows.com/ One Source Windows: https://onesourcewindows.com/
Business Challenges: Why Doesn't Your Business Work So it's a new year, and everyone is starting to come out of their holiday cave. You might have entered your hibernation period back at Halloween and are just now kicking on the steam engine after a hard stop. Or you might have just come off of a one to two-week break or no break at all. Everyone has a happy face and maybe a few extra pounds ready to dive into all of the New Year's resolutions, including your best year in business and life. But what if you fell short of hitting your goals last year? What if it feels like you backslide? What if life threw you a few curve balls you didn't see coming? What if, instead of feeling energized for the new year, you feel quite drained and kicked to the curve? What if behind the happy-face mask, you are asking, “Why isn't my business working?”? I've built my business on making lots of business and life mistakes and helping my clients avoid them. I've come through the fire, risen from the ashes, and have learned the art of taking that next step with the sincere belief that today is going to be better and the only way I fail is by giving up. I live in real-ville myself and with my clients. We don't pretend things are rosy during the times when they kind of stink. We don't worry about what others think, do, or say. We are honest about what is and isn't working, and we get down to making things better. We just keep walking on water towards Jesus, following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. And then it works. Keeping focused on your unique God-given mission during good times and bad helps you have a great tomorrow or the next 12 months no matter what the future holds. We took a little break, actually longer than I expected last year, from our weekly podcast. But we have a great year planned to support you to flourish in your business and thrive in your life. Today's coffee might be more than just a morning pick-me-up; it's a conversation starter about the complex interplay of global economics and local businesses. In a recent episode of the Valley Business Today, host Janet Michael and Carl Knoblock, Virginia District Director for the Small Business Administration, dived into this topic, shedding light on how external economic factors impact small businesses and, consequently, consumers. Janet and Carl began their discussion by addressing a key concern: many local consumers do not understand how business operations are influenced by global economic factors. Carl pointed out that price increases are often attributed to local issues like inflation, but global events such as droughts and geopolitical conflicts also play significant roles. This complexity influences everything from coffee beans to retail products. Small businesses are at the mercy of fluctuating supply chain costs. For example, a local coffee shop might face higher prices due to a drought affecting coffee bean production or war disrupting supply chains. Janet emphasized that while consumers notice price hikes at the grocery store, they often overlook how these hikes impact local eateries or shops. Carl noted that small businesses often try to absorb these costs to keep customers happy, a strategy that can lead to long-term financial instability. Janet suggested that consumers need to be more aware of where products come from and the economic challenges local business owners face. Carl shared that American-made products often have a reputation for quality, both domestically and abroad. However, consumers' inclination toward cheaper, imported goods has made it difficult for local businesses to compete. As the conversation progressed, the focus shifted to how small businesses can adapt to changing conditions. Carl emphasized the importance of having multiple suppliers to avoid disruptions. He also encouraged business owners to communicate openly with their customers about why prices might be increasing and what steps they are taking to mitigate these issues. Janet added that crisis situations often bring communities together, providing an opportunity for businesses to reinforce customer loyalty through transparency. Another crucial aspect discussed was the need for small businesses to diversify their customer base and product offerings. Janet pointed out that businesses could introduce lower-cost items to attract a broader audience and help subsidize high-end products. Carl agreed, noting that this strategy could help businesses navigate economic downturns and keep their customer base intact. The discussion wrapped up with a reminder that local businesses, particularly those ingrained in their communities, deserve support and understanding. Janet and Carl agreed that informing consumers about the broader economic landscape can foster a more supportive business environment. Businesses also need to plan ahead, even during good times, to better weather future challenges. The Small Business Administration remains a valuable resource for guidance and support, encouraging businesses to reach out for help when needed. Click here to send Carl an email. The key takeaway from this episode is clear: understanding the interconnectedness of global and local economies can help consumers make more informed choices and encourage them to support their local businesses. This mutual support can ultimately sustain the local economy, creating a resilient and thriving community.
