Help keep our podcast going by contributing to our Patreon! During the ancient Roman Republic and into the Empire, there was a place all the fabulously wealthy went. An escape from the real world. A place where they could unleash all their most hedonistic and murderous urges. That place was Baiae. Baiae was the playground of Rome's rich and infamous, whose baths alone were the size of palaces. It had many secrets—but perhaps the most deadly was that the entire city was built on a supervolcano. Long before Baiae was built, the ancients called this region “the Burning Fields.” The caldera breathes out, and worlds end in fire. It breathes in, and an entire city sinks beneath the waves. This week, Julius Caesar (THAT Julius Caesar) joins us to walk the drowned streets of Baiae—and pull back the curtain on a secret world of sin. Alli Sinclair's books are recommended for readers of Kate Quinn and Judy Nunn and that tells you a lot about the sort of stories they are – dual timeline family stories unravelling long buried secrets.  Her latest book, The Codebreakers, takes that scenario one step further. It deals with national as well as personal secrets and tells the story of the cypher-breaking Australian women who staffed Central Bureau Intelligence – the equivalent of Bletchley Park in London. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and in Binge Reading today Alli talks about her passion for stories about strong women defying society's expectations, and her exciting new film projects with an LA based collaborator. We've got three eBook copies of The Codebreakers to give away to three lucky readers in our Loving You romance promo. But now, here's Alli. Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Alli, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Alli Sinclair: Hi Jenny. Thank you so much for having me along. Introducing author Alli Sinclair Author Alli Sinclair - Dual time line stories with lots of secrets Jenny Wheeler: The Codebreakers, which is your latest novel, is like an Australian version of the Bletchley Park story. It's the story of the work of the women who worked in the so-called Central Bureau in Australia during the Second World War. I had never even realized that this bureau existed. How did you come across the story? Alli Sinclair: I had written a book called Burning Fields which came out in 2018, and I had my main character working for the Australian Women's Army service in Brisbane. I didn't really touch much on that because the story was set post-war, but I liked the idea of exploring what it was like for women working for the war effort in Australia. I jumped on the old Google and put in Women World War Two, Australian Women's Army Service Australia, and this very tiny article popped up about Central Bureau. It mentioned that it was Australia's elite signals intelligence organization and had been kept a secret for decades. I had never heard of this. The research went crazy and it took me quite a while to uncover the information, but as soon as I discovered this story, there was no way I was letting go. Jenny Wheeler: That's absolutely right. The researching of it must have been pretty difficult because we're coming to the point where although there could be written memoirs,

This week’s guest is Michael Moreci, the co-writer of The Plot, coming soon from Vault Comics.  Michael wrote this with Tim Daniel as part of Vault’s new annual horror imprint, Nightfall. I got a look at the first issue and it’s pretty awesome.  There’s already some great buzz about it too so be sure to check it out when the first issue debuts on September 25th. I’ve followed Michael’s career for some time.  He first popped up on my radar with Hoax Hunters, a series he co-wrote with Steve Seeley a few years ago.  Since then he’s played in the sci-fi / horror space with some great titles like Roche Limit, Burning Fields, and a personal favorite, Curse.   Michael can be found at his official website, MichaelPMoreci.com.  Be sure to sign up for his email newsletter too. He’s also on Twitter and Instagram as @MichaelMoreci. CONTACT: Email | Twitter SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

Australian romance authors are taking on the world with their novels. Hot on the heels of Natasha Lester’s success with The Paris Seamstress, Alli Sinclair’s latest novel, Burning Fields, will be available worldwide in November. Burning Fields is an historical novel set in my part of the world, Far North Queensland, and is touted as an Australian historical with an Italian influence. During our conversation we chat about the following: women’s experiences during WW2 and beyond the role of women in history researching historical fiction in Australia what a romance novel is and what it isn’t exploring the Australian landscape and the potential for stories the benefits of writing communities, festivals and friendships women’s perspectives on life and writing Alli’s next book Writers Retreats, especially those at sea the German book market and international translations Sinclair’s fourth novel was released in Oz and New Zealand in June and the author is busy on the launch trail here in Queensland as I write this. Even more exciting is her Writers At Sea Retreat to New Caledonia with TM Clark, from 30 August to 7 September, 2018. Comic writer Michael Moreci (Roche Limit, Burning Fields) joins the show this week for a doozy of an episode, as the pair dives deep into Moreci's work, the comic industry, and...Star Wars? That's right. The pair talks about what's next for his sci-fi book Roche Limit, how film influences his writing, how to get and keep the attention of comic readers and retailers, the importance of being different in an increasingly large industry, personal branding, the struggle of quality of work versus name recognition when it comes to sales, sales vs. internet hype, why he and a bunch of collaborators made their own Star Wars comics, and then they close with a spoiler-rific discussion about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's a big talk, but an entertaining and interesting one.

After exactly 31 minutes of talking about the music of our past, a Joanne from VF's past, pressing episode 50 to vinyl, hockey, and the old workplace grind, we finally get to our debut of the "Comic News" bumper, featuring a notable increase in "Creed". We try to avoid talking about Marvel's upcoming "Secret Wars" by discussing the trailer for the new Fantastic Four movie being released in the spring of 2015.  But, much like moths to a porch light, we eventually get back Secret Wars, but attempt to put a slightly more positive spin on it, as compared to last episode. In our review of the comics we read over the past week (a segment we like to call, "Rapid-Fire Review) we look at Crossed + One Hundred #2, Burning Fields #1, Batman Eternal #42, Batman And Robin #38, Teen Titans #6, Tooth & Claw #3, Rumble #2, Spread #5, Wicked + The Divine #7, All-New X-Factor #20, All-New X-Men #35, Amazing Spider-Man #13, Fantastic Four #642, and Superior Iron-Man #4. In a very special surprise segment, we catch Green Up's Ryan Beagley on the road to discuss his latest podcast, and give him a chance to pay us compliments. As always, we wrap things up with a look towards the books about to be released (January 28, 2015). Its a long and often completely off-topic episode of Graphic Novice...  just like all the other episodes of Graphic Novice. Thanks for listening!
