This episode takes us across the pond to the UK where Mike was stationed for a few months. Naturally, he searched for comic shops almost immediately and found ACE Comics in Colchester, Essex. Inquiries were made and a quick train ride later Mike was at the shop on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for an interview with Martin Averre, AKA Biff. Biff has a deep history in the comics industry, particularly in the UK. He personally knows many of the great British creators, such as Alan Grant, John Wagner and Pat Mills. The building where the shop is located is centuries old and full of history. As one of the oldest comic shops in the UK, it is the perfect combination of historical landmark and a modern business. Wait until you hear about the unofficial British version of a comic book price guide that Biff published and on which Brian Bolland drew the cover! After the interview, Mike is joined by podcast fellow podcaster and comics fan, George Hanna to cover Flake, the debut graphic novel by Matthew Dooley. It's the winner of the 2020 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize, the UK's only literary award for comic literature. George is one of the hosts of Meanwhile at the Podcast, a show that covers it all...pop culture, entertainment, fandom, you name it. ACE Comics has locations in Colchester and Southend-on-Sea and found online at https://acecomics.co.uk/. They also have a very active eBay store, so check it out! Be sure to follow ACE Comics on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Connect with George at https://meanwhileatthepodcast.libsyn.com/ and follow the show on Facebook and the site formerly known as Twitter. Meanwhile at the Podcast can be found on Apple, Spotify or wherever you find your podcasts, so be sure to check it out. Big thanks to Biff for his interview and great book recommendation, and thanks to George for joining me. For more interviews at comics shops around the US and the world, subscribe to Mike's Comic Shop Roadshow wherever you listen to podcasts.

Reporting live from San Diego Comic-Con, we're chatting with Gail Simone about everything she has going on at the moment, including the incredible Misty 2024 Special from Rebellion Publishing. When editors first approached her with the project, she'd never read the previous British series. However, after a few issues, Simone was hooked and saw her way into Misty's world, so some updates would have to occur. The Misty 2024 Special features three tales written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Carola Borelli, Aly Fell, and Marianna Ignazzi, plus a final story scripted and drawn by Letty Wilson. Each short takes on a different perspective and message, but all are snuggled comfortably within the horror genre. Simone is a thematically forward writer, and it was a treat to dig into her mission for each of these macabre yarns. Initially created by Pat Mills and published in 1978, Misty was designed to appeal to women, but male readers came along for the ride (and the pretty pictures). Gail Simone modifies Misty's thematic and narrative points of view, basically doing what she did for Birds of Prey and the superhero genre, but for Misty and horror. The Misty 2024 Special is currently available across the pond and will arrive on American shores on August 21st. Wrapped with a gorgeous Tula Lotay cover, this item is not to be missed. Also, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Gail Simone is writing more Misty stories. So, it's best to get aboard as soon as possible. Follow Gail Simone on Twitter and Instagram. And be on the lookout for our future San Diego Comic-Con coverage. We're talking to folks like Jason Aaron, James Tynion IV, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampare, Tom King, Mariko Tamaki, Ram V, and more.

He's back - and it's about time! Are we talking about the Doctor? Or David Tennant? Maybe Russell T Davies? The Meep himself? Whatever, we don't mind - Doctor Who returns to our TV screens in The Star Beast today, 25 November, and to celebrate, Steevie, Dave and Kenny turn back the clock to look at not just the original comic, but also the Big Finish audio adaptation. And - we've two guests, including comics royalty, as original Star Beast writer Pat Mills joins us for a chat! Also popping in is Will Brooks, who discusses creating the Meep on the Big Finish cover. We also get the definitive answer on what colour the Meep was originally intended to be - is he white? Or is he comic blue? There's only one way to find out!
A special episode paying tribute to the legendary comics artist Kevin O'Neill who sadly passed away this week. We take an in-depth tour through his life, looking at his work on ground-breaking titles such as 2000ad, his collaborations with fellow legends Pat Mills and Alan Moore, and celebrating the incredible comics he brought to the world such as Nemesis the Warlock, Ro-Busters, the ABC Warriors, Metalzoic, Marshall Law and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen!
On this edition of the Word Balloon podcast, we present a 2009conversation with artist Kevin O'Neil, to discuss therelease of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vol III): Century #1 ("1910") drawn by O'Neil and written by Alan Moore.Kevin discusses the background of the story, and his views on past characters like Mister Hyde Mina Murray, the mysterious Orlando, and the Family line of Captain Nemo. His thoughts on the LXG film, and the origins and future plans of his co-creation with Pat Mills, Marshal Law .The interview does cover plot points and setting that have been discussed in other previewarticles and reviews of the book, so beware. Her are some non spoiler quotes from the talk...On the inclusion of Nemo's daughter in the 1910 League. "She occupies a great part of the story, and we will follow her in later books."On the process of putting the literary cameos and pop culture easter eggs in a subtle way. "We just have to tread a careful line as to how we populate the book.. as we proceed with incredible numbers of different characters in street scenes and backgrounds or newspaper headlines ...it's a lot of work, but we realize we have these Jess Nevins books analyze every single panel and we know a lot of people who like that it...however if you don't know the references,it won't spoil the enjoyment of the story, it's just another layer of fictional stuff going on alongside the main story."
