In Episode 227 of Geeks Unleashed, hosts Jasmin and Mark kick things off with their "Geek of the Week" segments, where Jasmin reviews the newly released Prime Video television series Off Campus, breaking down how the college romance and drama translate to the screen, while Mark shifts focus to the comic world to rave about Vault Comics' highly anticipated Dungeon Crawler Carl graphic novel adaptation. Moving into pop culture news, the duo breaks down the impressive box office performance of the hit movie Obsession, followed by their raw trailer reactions for the tense upcoming thriller Primetime starring Robert Pattinson and Netflix's mystery sequel Enola Holmes 3. Finally, they wrap up the show with their main feature review: a nostalgic, in-depth look back at the 1995 teen comedy classic Clueless, dissecting its brilliant adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, its iconic '90s fashion and vocabulary, and how well Cher Horowitz's Beverly Hills adventures hold up for modern audiences. You can follow us on X, Facebook and Instagram or if you would like to support us you can donate to our KoFi.

Opening hook / origin Chris, you've said that roadside coyote scene was the first thing you wrote, even before you knew the full story. What was it about that moment that felt like the right entry point into this world? 2. Tone and influences You're blending eco-horror and neo-noir in a really striking way here. What's each of your relationship to those genres—are there specific books or films that shaped how you approached them, or personal favorites that were on your mind while making this? 3. The prose chapter choice That opening prose chapter from Oilfield Graveyard: Tales of the Wildcatter Myth is such a bold structural swing. What does prose allow you to do that comics alone wouldn't, especially in setting up the mythology? 4. The Wildcatter as a presence The Wildcatter evolves from something almost abstract in issue #2 to something disturbingly human in issue #3. How did you approach revealing it piece by piece without losing the mystery? 5. Character and transformation The grandmother's descent is genuinely unsettling. How did you think about her transformation in relation to the oil itself, is it possession, corruption, or something more symbolic? 6. Visual storytelling and horror lineage Charlie, you spent years defining the visual language of long-form horror on The Walking Dead. When you approach a story like this, how does that experience inform your instincts—and where do you find yourself deliberately doing something different? 7. Pacing and silent storytelling Charlie, one thing that really stands out is how much space you're given for quiet, atmospheric sequences—scenes that breathe and flow without a lot of dialogue or overt plot movement. How do you approach pacing those moments visually so they still feel propulsive, and what do you think comics can do in those silent stretches that other mediums can't? 8. Fun / silly question: If the Wildcatter had a playlist, what's the one song that absolutely has to be on it?
This week on the AIPT Comics Podcast, we interview cartoonist Stephanie Stalvey, diving deep into her graphic memoir Everything in Color. In the conversation, Stalvey opens up about growing up in an evangelical household, unpacking purity culture, and how motherhood reshaped her understanding of faith and identity. It's an honest, vulnerable discussion about turning lived experience into art, and why telling these stories can resonate far beyond one person's life. When you look back now, how do you understand that relationship differently? One of the most striking ideas in the book is the notion that “our bodies belong to the authority figure.” How did unpacking that belief shape the emotional core of this memoir? Everything in Color is deeply personal, especially in how it portrays your relationship with your husband and your child. What was it like sharing drafts with your husband as you were creating the book? Your journey raises big questions about faith, doubt, and identity. Did you find yourself arriving at answers while making the book, or is it more about learning to live with the questions? The book touches on major shared moments like 9/11 and the COVID lockdown. How did anchoring your personal story to these larger events help shape the narrative? There's a powerful shift in the book where love, especially through motherhood, reframes everything as sacred. When did that realization first begin to take hold for you? This is a massive and ambitious work. Was it always envisioned at this scale, and how long did it take you to bring it to life? The title Everything in Color feels like a mission statement for the book. At what point did you know that was the right way to describe this journey? The artwork blends intimacy with emotional weight throughout. How did you approach pairing your visual storytelling with such vulnerable subject matter?
Damien Wassel, CEO of Vault Comics, on his transition from academia to publishing and the use of stories as tools for connection and influence. The former academic brings his PhD in Philosophy to underscore his partnerships with globally recognized brands and talent, and publishes multiple best-selling and award-winning comic books and graphic novels. He argues that in an age of distraction, it is stories that can attract and hold our attention, building community through a shared emotional engagement, even across time. It is the comic and graphic novel's ability to provoke deep reflection, he says, that reminds us of how it feels to be human in the age of Ai.

The Summer of '83 concussively concludes with a gloriously metal swords and sorcery adventure helmed by the 1st AD of The Beastmaster, and penned by the writer of Vampire Hookers and Rainbow Brite. Deathstalker, our morally messed up but oddly philosophical anti-hero, is sent on a quest by weird witch Toralva to unite the sword of justice, amulet of life, and chalice of magic in order to “become the power” before the evil Lord Munkar does. Join Javi, Paul and, intrepidly, Producer Brad on this wild ride into wanton violence and chaos that features a creepy meat puppet, a chatty cave ogre, random mud wrestling, a cannibalistic pig man, a gladiator tournament, some very problematic shape-shifting, John Wick's worst nightmare cuisine, a truly epic score, and an unexpectedly bold (and timely) anti-autocracy political statement — all of which somehow spawned three sequels and a very fun 2025 remake executive produced by none other than Slash. Total THB has always felt like a living piece of your imagination—something that evolved alongside you. Now that you're returning to it after thirty years, what does it mean to finally see it presented as the definitive version you always envisioned?7. In your introduction, you mention artists like Bruegel, Motherwell, and Rodin alongside Kirby, Moebius, and Miyazaki. That's a fascinating cross-section of influences—how do you see Total THB sitting at the intersection of those worlds now?2. In your introduction, you talk about the seed idea—“small things exploding into big things.” How has that core concept shaped your storytelling and visual philosophy across your entire career, and how does it feel to return to it now with decades of experience behind you?8. Total THB is set on a divided Mars, a world of art versus bureaucracy, chaos versus control. Given how global politics and culture have evolved since the '90s, do you see new relevance—or new warnings—in the story's setting and themes?5. The relationship between HR and THB—the sheltered daughter and her enigmatic bodyguard—feels both intimate and mythic. How do you see their dynamic now, and what new layers do you hope readers discover in this remastered edition?6. You've described superheroes before as modern myths — figures that blend pulp with poetry. Having moved between corporate superhero universes and your own creator-owned worlds, what do you think mainstream superhero comics could still learn from the spirit of self-publishing that birthed THB*?*
