Jimmy Soni is an award-winning author. His latest book, THE FOUNDERS: The Story of PayPal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley, was a debut best-seller and has earned praise from the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Economist, among many others. Described as “an intensely magnetic chronicle” (The New York Times) and “engrossing” (Business Insider), Soni conducted hundreds of interviews, including exclusive sit-downs with Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and many others. The book explores PayPal's turbulent early days and the shaping of a generation of technological talent. “Deeply reported and bracingly written, this book is an indispensable guide to modern innovation and entrepreneurship,” noted Walter Isaacson, New York Times bestselling author of The Code Breaker. Soni's previous book, A MIND AT PLAY How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age, won the 2017 Neumann Prize, awarded by the British Society for the History of Mathematics for the best book on the history of mathematics for a general audience, and the Middleton Prize by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The book explored the life and times of Dr. Claude Shannon, founder of the field of information theory and one of the 20th century's forgotten geniuses. Fortune magazine called the book a “charming account of one of the twentieth century's most distinguished scientists…Readers will enjoy this portrait of a modern-day Da Vinci.” A prior work, ROME'S LAST CITIZEN: the Life and Legacy of Cato, shared the story of the ancient Roman Senator Cato the Younger, archrival of Julius Caesar. Soni is also a co-author of Jane's Carousel, completed with the late Jane Walentas, which captured one woman's remarkable twenty-five-year journey to restore a beloved carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Soni started his career at McKinsey & Company, and he lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his daughter, Venice. In the case of Alan Turing; the mathematician who became infamous during World War Two for his contribution to science, cryptography, and mathematics, it would appear that there is no one more qualified to receive gracious honour and recognition for his work. Though this was the case for some time, Turing would suffer many injustices in his life; battling his own demons whilst being persecuted for his sexual orientation. Perhaps the biggest conspiracy to haunt the life and works of Alan Turing would surround the case and cause of his untimely death at the age of 42. Reported as suicide at the time, there have since been multiple reports, discussions and theories centring on this issue and is the focus of our video today. Did Alan Turing ‘really' kill himself? What troubles had the respected scientist endured in the lead up to his death? Could it be that he was actually murdered for what he knew?Support the show Support us on Patreon Consider leaving us a review on your preferred podcast platform, it really helps! It was not until 1583 Walsingham managed to plant a mole in Castelnau's embassy in London. These letters have been presumed lost for the past 436 years until now. Producer/Host: Jim Campbell There are three very big challenges that humans will have to deal with in the near future: Climate Change, Genetic Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence or AI. Today, we briefly look at some sources to check for those interested in the first two challenges, and then turn our attention to sources for those interested in what AI means for us today, and will mean for humans in the near future and beyond. On genetic engineering, a good book for an overview, written very clearly for non-specialists, is The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson. A book from 1950 that has had a big impact on the development of what we now call Artificial Intelligence is The Human Use of Human Beings by Norbert Wiener. About the host: Jim Campbell has a longstanding interest in the intersection of digital technology, law, and public policy and how they affect our daily lives in our increasingly digital world. He has banged around non-commercial radio for decades and, in the little known facts department (that should probably stay that way), he was one of the readers voicing Richard Nixon's words when NPR broadcast the entire transcript of the Watergate tapes. Like several other current WERU volunteers, he was at the station's sign-on party on May 1, 1988 and has been a volunteer ever since doing an early stint as a Morning Maine host, and later producing WERU program series including Northern Lights, Conversations on Science and Society, Sound Portrait of the Artist, Selections from the Camden Conference, others that will probably come to him after this is is posted, and, of course, Notes from the Electronic Cottage. The post Notes from the Electronic Cottage 12/22/22: AI Books first appeared on WERU 89.9 FM Blue Hill, Maine Local News and Public Affairs Archives.

In this episode, Joel sits down with the performance specialist Dean Link to talk about re-thinking imposter syndrome. Dean has spent most of his career helping elite athletes to rewire their brains. Before moving into a leadership role working with coaches, sports scientists and administrators helping them to create an environment people could thrive in. He is now applying that knowledge to the business world. They discuss why imposter syndrome is actually a quite natural way to feel. But it is a feeling which can easily overwhelm us. In the episode, Dean explains how you can stop that from happening and harness it in a way that helps you to learn. To turn yourself into a more flexible person who can adapt and thrive regardless of what life throws at you. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you feel that you need to be right all the time you will always feel like an imposter. Nobody can know everything. It is good to be reminded that there are gaps in your knowledge, but you must not let the feeling of imposter syndrome overwhelm and stop you. Creating an environment in which employees can thrive enables them to perform and improves staff retention. Human beings love certainty and being in control. But that is not how the world works. When you accept that you can thrive. You can´t stop yourself from caring what people think, but you can control how much emotion, energy, and importance you attach to it. You can turn imposter syndrome on its head and turn it into something positive. BEST MOMENTS‘My job really is being a great investigator to understand what the problem is and then try and figure out the best way to support them. ´‘I often say if you've got impostor syndrome, that's great. Let's harness it. If people say I don't have it, I'm like, 'There's a red flag.'‘It isn´t the feelings and thoughts that cause us the suffering. It's what we do with the feelings and thoughts that causes us pain.''Impostor syndrome can either go two ways. It's something that we can either thrive with, or we can suffer with it. And it's a choice.' While Ireland remained neutral in the Second World War several Nazi agents were smuggled into the country. Their aims varied, some sought to establish contact with the IRA while others were spies. In this episode, I interview historian Marc McMenamin about the attempts of Irish Military Intelligence's to catch these spies and agents. Marc also explains the attitude of the IRA towards these individuals & the forgotten Irish code breakers in the war. Its a fascinating story. Marc has published two books on Irish Military Intelligence in the Second World War Codebreaker & Ireland's Secret War both of which are fantastic reads. September 2022 Each year, to mark the arrival of the first Codebreakers at GC&CS in 1939 we hold our Veterans' Reunion. The Reunion is always a very special day for us at Bletchley Park as it gives us the chance to thank our Veterans for their service. For the Veterans it is a chance to meet old friends, make new ones, reminisce and tell stories of their time here. This year it was made more poignant as because of the global pandemic, this was the first we have been able to hold since 2019. It meant that we were not sure just how many would be able to make it, but twenty Veterans and over one hundred of their family and friends managed to join us for this special day. Podcast Producer Mark Cotton will bring you a flavour of the day and interviews with the following Veterans: Kay Wingate Pat Field Anne Chetwynd-Stapylton Miriam Myland Jean Cheshire (wartime resident) Betty Webb Pat Davies Many thanks to Alex McFadyen, editor of the official Bletchley Park magazine, Ultra, for assisting on the day. Code Breaker, Season 2, Episode 1: Dario Offstein (@DarioOffstein) and Jeff Mueller (@jmthrivept) look behind the curtain at why some players are more susceptible to injury than others. ----------------------------------------------------------
When Japanese signals were decoded at Bletchley Park, who translated them into English? When Japanese soldiers were taken as prisoners of war, who interrogated them? When Japanese maps and plans were captured on the battlefield, who deciphered them for Britain? When Great Britain found itself at war with Japan in December 1941, there was a linguistic battle to be fought--but Britain was hopelessly unprepared. Eavesdropping on the Emperor: Interrogators and Codebreakers in Britain's War With Japan (Oxford UP, 2021) traces the men and women with a talent for languages who were put on crash courses in Japanese, and unfolds the history of their war. Some were sent with their new skills to India; others to Mauritius, where there was a secret radio intercept station; or to Australia, where they worked with Australian and American codebreakers. Translating the despatches of the Japanese ambassador in Berlin after his conversations with Hitler; retrieving filthy but valuable documents from the battlefield in Burma; monitoring Japanese airwaves to warn of air-raids--Britain depended on these forgotten 'war heroes'. The accuracy of their translations was a matter of life or death, and they rose to the challenge. Based on declassified archives and interviews with the few survivors, this fascinating, globe-trotting book tells their stories. Jingyi Li is a PhD Candidate in Japanese History at the University of Arizona. She researches about early modern Japan, literati, and commercial publishing. Learn more about your ad choices. June 2022 In this ‘It Happened Here' episode we return to South Asia and the Pacific, and the war against the Japanese. After the disasters of Pearl Harbor, the Philippines and Singapore, and near disaster in Colombo in the first few months of 1942, the summer months would bring the Allies better fortune on the fighting fronts. 1942 would also see many changes for Britain's Codebreakers in South and East Asia as they rushed to adapt to the changing situation – a situation requiring the service of men and women from surprisingly diverse backgrounds and communities. As usual we are joined by Bletchley Park's Research Historian Dr David Kenyon to tell us more. Grateful thanks to Sarah Langston and Dr Ben Thompson for voicing our archival documents. Featuring the following contributors from our Oral History Archive: Edward Simpson Pat Johnston Image: US Navy, Naval Photographic Centre (Public Domain) #BPark, #Bletchleypark, #WW2, #Midway80
