Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary illustrates how 2022 NFL Draft quarterback prospect Tanner McKee of Stanford accounts for the leverage of two defenders in coverage with his ball placement on a downfield target after evading two pass rushers early in the play. What Is "Accounting for Leverage?" Leverage is the favorable or unfavorable position that one player has relative to his opponent. Football analysts spend a lot of time on aspects of quarterbacking like coverage identification, progression reads, and play recall. These aspects of the position emphasize book smarts. A lot of book-smart quarterbacks struggle to deliver to their NFL expectations set during the pre-draft screening process. These book-smart passers ace the whiteboard portion of the interview, often earning praise that they see and understand the theory of the game like a coach. They impress during the interview, and, in the past, performed well on the Wonderlic--a test that had little value for football players because it didn't test the speed and accuracy of processing of information found on a football field. Dan Marino, Brett Favre, and Steve McNair — MVP quarterbacks — excelled on the field because they knew how to identify "what is open," and deliver the ball immediately. Russ Lande calls this "release confidence." I call it a fast and confident processor. Marino and McNair had low Wonderlic Scores. I don't know Favre's score, but he didn't know what a nickel defense was until he was two years in as an NFL starter. While understanding the academic side of football has a lot of value, there can be too much weight placed on it when evaluating the position. Quarterbacking is a performance job, not an academic one. What often separates the best NFL quarterbacks from the rest is the player's ability to account for leverage. It's an underrated facet of performance gaining more recognition because it's an underlying key to success among elite passers. When a quarterback identifies the leverage of key defenders relative to a route in question, he has instant data that tells him if the route will break open and where to place the football. The most advanced leverage readers will see the position of 2-3 defenders relative to the receiver's route and make complex placement choices that work well in that context. This isn't required with most routes. Much of the time a quarterback may only need to read the leverage of 1-2 defenders relative to a route. One of the best publications that I can recommend for understanding how to account for leverage in a manner that cuts through the if/then that can force quarterbacks to think too much in the heat of action is, "From Headset to Helmet: The R4 System," by Dub Maddox and Darin Slack. This publication might be the quarterbacking version of Bruce Lee's publication, "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do." Whereas Lee discusses all of the inefficiencies of Wing Chun and how Jeet Kune Do works past it, Maddox and Slack's publication is similar in this regard with leverage versus traditional methods of coverage processing. The Basics of Leverage Reading for Quarterbacks A passer is looking for the position of defenders relative to the receiver's route break, but not always during the break but at the top of the receiver's stem prior to the break. Here are basic considerations of favorable leverage: The defender is shaded outside the receiver during the stem and the route break is inside with no safety or linebacker shaded inside above or below the receiver. The defender is shaded inside the receiver during the stem and the route break is outside with no safety or linebacker shaded outside above or below the receiver. The defenders' chests and/or hips are open to a side of the field opposite the direction of the break. There are several other considerations. One is the position of defenders who cover the zone of the receiver's break or who aren't primarily covering the targeted re...

We sat down with Jan Favre to talk some more about hardtails, industry fads and his single-speed adventures. Jan felt triggered by the Hardtails episode we recorded with Luise Rohland over the summer and sent in a thoughtful riposte to our conversation. Naturally, rather than letting the DM rot in our inbox, we invited Jan for a recording to elaborate on his message, some of the thinking and rationale behind his arguments and of course, his own riding. As an experienced shop mechanic, he has a great perspective on things like bike geometry, suspension and what really makes a difference out on the trail. Also, in a quest for simplicity, Jan set up his personal bike as a single-speed and it was interesting to hear how his BFeMax is holding up, from general riding at home, to park days with Anna Newkirk, all the way to multi-day adventures exploring the former Iron Curtain along the Bavarian-Czech border with his dad.

Hour 1: We actually opened with local hockey talk but Gio quickly changed that to Jets & Giants talk. Both fan bases will probably be happy if they just make the playoffs. Even if they get bounced in the first round, that would be a successful season for both the Giants and the Jets. Boomer said the Aaron Judge contract offers are going to be ‘breathtaking'. Xavier McKinney said his ATV hand injury was a ‘freak accident'. Gio said if he had a bye week he'd be eating cuban sandwiches on a beach sipping cocktails. Boomer wants to know where we are with Christmas decorations. Jerry is here for his first update but first we talked about election coverage last night. The Knicks & Nets play tonight in Brooklyn. We heard from Brian Daboll on Xavier McKinney's injury. We also heard from Xavier himself. Parks Frazier will call the plays for the Colts this Sunday. Aaron Rodgers was on the McAfee show and talked about Mike McCarthy coming back to Lambeau this week. And then we heard from Mike McCarthy. Jerry Jones had thoughts on OBJ joining the Cowboys. Chris Russo had a coughing fit while trying to talk. Billy Eppler tells us about talking to deGrom's representatives. Brian Cashman talked about the current state of the Yankees. The Rangers lost to the Islanders last night. The Oilers' Evander Kane had his wrist sliced by a skate but is doing well. In the final segment of the hour, we talk about potential buyers for the Washington Commanders including Jay Z and Jeff Bezos.  Hour 2: Kyrie and Adam Silver had a ‘productive' meeting yesterday. Kyrie had a chance at the beginning to apologize but he didn't do that. He kept making it worse with press conferences. Boomer compares this situation to the Imus situation. If Kyrie would have apologized properly the first time, none of this would have happened. And why are people comparing this to the Brett Favre situation? Favre is probably going to jail so it's not comparable. Even this has become a racial issue. Nobody ever says ‘what about Meyers Leonard?' Jerry returns for another update and starts with Brian Daboll commenting on Xavier McKinney's injury. Parks Frazier will call plays for the Colts this week. Dan Orlovsky wants to join the Colts staff. Boomer said Coach Cowher is going to be annoyed by this Colts situation on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers was on with Pat McAfee and said Mike McCarthy will be welcomed by Packers fans. Jerry Jones talks about the potential of OBJ to the Cowboys. Which NFL owner would you want to hang out with in Vegas? Billy Eppler talked about deGrom being interested in staying in NY. Brian Cashman talked about the Aaron Judge contract situation. Gio said the Yankees are so boring right now. Very stale. Chris Russo has no idea how to use a computer mouse. Francesa also didn't know how to use a mouse early on. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer once was at a party with Jerry Jones and he thought he was Phil Simms. A caller says he partied with Jerry Jones in Spain this past Summer. His story was painfully long and had way too many pointless details.  Hour 3: Al had a situation at his voting location where the whole place was almost compromised. A caller has an explanation for ‘I AM' from Kyrie Irving. Will Kyrie play for the Nets again? After yesterday's meeting with Adam Silver, maybe. We took a lot of calls on the Kyrie situation. Jerry returns for an update and starts with some audio from Daniel Jones about Xavier McKinney. He also said the Texans are a good team. So he's a liar. Mike McDaniel on Justin Fields scrambling. Mike McCarthy gets very emotional about returning to Green Bay. Will any of us cry when we finally leave WFAN? Brian Cashman was asked about Aaron Judge and offered a ‘no comment'. We heard from Chris King on the Islanders game winning goal. In the final segment of the hour, ratings for the NFL have been great for CBS. The Bucs running game has been so bad, Tom Brady is throwing the ball like 58 times a game. He makes decisions quickly and doesn't get hit. Could Brady wind up on his boyhood team, the 49'ers, before all is said and done? Hour 4: If the Giants beat the Texans they will get to 7 wins, which they haven't had in a number of years now. A caller gave us a long history lesson that was very confusing to us. Jerry returns for an update and starts with audio from Xavier McKinney on his ATV accident in Cabo. Aaron Rodgers talked about Mike McCarthy coming back to Lambeau. Jerry Jones talks about OBJ being on the Cowboys' radar. And the Islanders beat the Rangers. The Devils win again to make it seven straight. Let's guess the spread between the Seahawks and Bucs in Germany. The Colts are -6 point underdogs in Vegas to the Raiders. Receiving negative feedback as ESPN analysts for not speaking on the Favre situation, Ryan explains how it's not his job as a host on a football show to talk about a former player's off the field business- agreeing with Marcus that as football analysts it's their job to cover what's going on with players and football teams who play on Sundays. Avoiding speculation and understanding that not all the details are public, the guys talk about the Boston Celtics troubling situation involving the head coach and the shadow or casts for the organization, players and fans. And as men of color in power and positions of success, Marcus struggles to understand how and why people fall into these situations to lose everything they've worked for over temptation. Channing, Ryan and Fred all agree but also aren't naive to the actions that led to Udoka's suspension and the effect it has on the black community, especially females who looked to his partner Nia Long as a queen in their world. The men dive into a deep conversation of infidelity and Marcus opens up about how he is now in a place that he would never go down that road again.   Although stardom was familiar to Marcus, transitioning from college to first round pick of the Dallas Cowboys was challenging on many levels. The guys talk about pressures faced by being drafted early and the environment created by high profile owners such as Jerry Jones and what it's like to play with a star on your helmet. Marcus shares Joe being deeply rooted in his faith was the only thing that kept him afloat during his career. Admittedly, as a former player and now ESPN analyst- Marcus speaks truthfully that he feels Jerry Jones is intrusive and adds stress to his players. Sharing his most pivotal moment and impact as a man, Marcus touches on his family. Self-aware of how he's become successful, he pays homage to all those who have cared about him and believed in him along the journey such as his sister, Deidre Spears and how her emotional journey had inspired him the most. Mississippi Today reporter Anna Wolfe breaks down for Andy the Brett Favre Mississippi welfare scheme, in which Favre and other state officials are accused of funneling $77 million worth of welfare funds to their own personal projects—none of which had anything to do with where the funds needed to go. But a former WWE wrestler is now getting in the mix with major allegations that Wolfe shares with Andy. Almost immediately after the news broke surrounding Boston's Ime Udoka's impending suspension for multiple sexual relationships with women in the Celtic's organization, the refrain on social media became "but what about Brett Favre?" Former NFL QB Robert Griffin III went as far to say that if you have more of a problem with an adulterous NBA coach than an accused former NFL fraudster, you are part of the problem. Jason rejects the false Favre equivalency but says there is something that ties the two stories together, and it has nothing to do with race. “We should be talking about the sense of entitlement pervasive among athletes and other celebrities because of our culture's out-of-control idolatry. Entitlement explains the behavior of Favre, Udoka, and virtually all of America's celebrities.” "Fearless" soldier Steve Kim returns to join the conversation about idolatry and entitlement and about Stephen A.
