New England's Narragansett tribe sided with the colonists during an armed conflict that took place in 1636 and ended in 1638 known as the Pequot War—between the Pequot tribe and an alliance of the colonists from the Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Saybrook colonies and their allies from the Narragansett and Mohegan tribes. The war concluded with the decisive defeat of the Pequot. In November 1622, the great diplomat Squanto died while leading a trade expedition with his English allies. Only a year had passed since he formed a treaty between the Pilgrims of Plymouth and the indigenous Wampanoag people. While the early years of English-Indian relations were marked by cooperation and accommodation, including the famous Thanksgiving feast, Squanto's passing marked a descent into a period of slowly ramping hostilities, culminating in the first war fought between English settlers and Native Americans. This episode of Gladio Free Europe explores the continuing history of colonial New England, across the 1620s and '30s as the English population rapidly swelled, in large part due to the establish of the new Massachusetts Bay colony which would quickly overshadow Plymouth and the original Pilgrims. While the Pilgrims and Puritans maintained warm relations with some native peoples, such as the great Mohegan chief Uncas, competition over land and resources drew them into conflict with others. Though little known today, the Pequot War would have particularly grave consequences on English-indigenous relations, as it set the precedent for mass slaughter of Indian women and children and ended with the enslavement of the entire Pequot nation. Massachusetts and Connecticut are not remembered as slave societies, but captive Native Americans formed an essential role in the colonial economy and helped normalize the institutions of slavery and racial segregation across the English colonies. Listen to understand how the peace of the First Thanksgiving collapsed into the bloodshed and subjugation that defined the American colonial experience, and try to uncover how the consequences of this turn towards violence shaped our country for the worse for centuries to come.

Native people inhabited the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts for more than 10,000 years. It is the homeland of many First People, all related to one another. They are called the Sokoki, Pocumtuck, Nonotuck, Woronoco, and Agawam. Many other tribes visited and still visit this Native homeland. Among them are the Abenaki, Nipmuck, Wampanoag, Narragansett, Mohegan, Pequot, Mohican, and Mohawk. These tribes are recognized today by states or the federal government as sovereign nations. Our guest on this encore interview from 2022 is Jennifer Lee, Northern Narragansett Educator and Board member of the Nolumbeka Project [https://nolumbekaproject.org/], an organization dedicated to honoring the Northeastern Tribal Heritage of the Connecticut River Valley. The word Nolumbeka is Abenaki for “the calm waters between the rapids.” Included are two excerpts from the video series "Indigenous Voices," as well as commentary on the Wampanoag view of the story behind the Thanksgiving holiday. Historically, tribes gathered in this valley to trade, to fish, to plant, to participate in sacred ceremonies. The sad fact remains that during the wars waged in the colonial period, the Native people were driven from this valley. They blended into the Abenaki, Nipmuck, and Mohican tribes across the Northeast. Often, they integrated into the settler communities. Some were herbal doctors, basket makers, and carvers. They dressed like their European descendant neighbors, but kept the fire of their culture alive. Jennifer Lee, Grandmother, bark basket maker, and culture bearer, provides histories, insights and perspectives of Native Peoples of the Northeast. Jennifer grew up without knowledge of her Native ancestry which compelled her to seek out the true history and culture of the Northeast Woodlands Indigenous Peoples as an independent researcher. For roughly 30 years, she has held classes in her Eastern Conical Wigwam to tell the stories of Northeastern Native Peoples and share her cultural knowledge. She is co-producer with the Nolumbeka Project of the 10-part film series “Indigenous Voices'' [https://nolumbekaproject.org/indigenous-voices/]. She has been a bark basket maker [http://Barkbasketsbyjlee.com] for 40 years. Carry Kim, Co-Host of EcoJustice Radio. Hello everybody!! Hope you are all doing well! It FINALLY feels like fall-weather is here. Man, do we have an episode for you all! Not only does our pal and sponsor Dr. Andy Vantreese fill-in for Colton, but with Fire Prevention Week coming up the Listen Local crew felt it was the perfect time to bring on Pequot Fire Chief Mike Schwankl and Nisswa Fire Chief Shawn Bailey. Both talk about everything from events coming up - including open houses at the Nisswa Fire Department next Tuesday Oct. 10th and Pequot Fire Department on Wednesday the 11th - to fire prevention, the importance of checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly, and how both cities are looking to hire firefighters. On that note of Nisswa and Pequot needing firefighters, both Chiefs make their pitch to Jacob on why he should join their department. While one of them offers the cover of the firefighters calendar and a brand new ladder truck, the other offers being right next door to his favorite spots Main Street Ale House and Ye olde Pickle Factory. So, as you can imagine, Jacob is eating up this recruitment process... In all seriousness though, if you have ever thought of joining a fire department, stop by or reach out to your local fire chief. Like Pequot and Nisswa, many are looking to hire more firefighters. Thank you so much to Chiefs Bailey and Schwankl, and we highly encourage our Listen Local listeners to stop by the open houses next week! Thanks to another round of nasty weather — this time a wave of torrential rain that drenched much of Connecticut and made playing football a slippery endeavor — it was a chaotic Week 4 of high school football. For those who played Friday night, the rain disrupted just about every football team's delicate offensive choreography, which scripted some eye-popping results. The one constant, however, was No. 2 West Haven's 31-21 victory over rival and No, 6-ranked Shelton at Finn Stadium. Now, the Westies are making a serious run at the state's top ranking as they head to face rival Hamden in a homecoming for RB Camren Kemp, who transferred a week before the season. Join SPB and Pete Paguaga as they break down that matchup and everything else that happened over the four-day Week 4 weekend: St. Joseph's narrow FCIAC win over Stamford on Saturday, Cromwell/Portland's Pequot rout of the new MSW co-op on Sunday. This week's special guest is first-year North Branford coach ANTHONY SALVATI, a T-Bird alum whose team is 3-0 going into a showdown with unbeaten Granby/Canton. Salvati talks about his squad, why he returned to his alma mater after spending four years at Guilford, and why he hopes the T-Birds will never have to co-op, as so many other Pequot programs have. In the spring and summer of 1637, the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay, the English settlers on the Connecticut River, and their Indian allies, the Narragansetts and the eastern Niantics, would wage a war of annihilation against the Pequot tribe of southern Connecticut. It would be the most brutal fighting between Europeans and the Indians of North America since at least 1599 (when the Spanish massacred the Pueblo Indians of the Acoma mesa). It would also be the first time that Europeans set out to extinguish an Indian nation. As such, it would be, arguably, the greatest stain on the legacy of the Puritans of Massachusetts. This is the military history of that war, the causes and run-up having been covered in the last two episodes. [Errata (5/21/2023): A very longstanding and attentive listener from New Mexico corrected my pronunciation of "Acoma" - the emphasis on the first syllable rather than the second. This is especially embarrassing because I believe he has had to correct me twice, the first time a year and a half ago. The same correspondent also points out the historical debate over the number of Indians who actually died at the Acoma massacre, and what the Spanish actually did to the feet of the captives. Perhaps the Spanish merely cut off their toes, rather than cutting the foot in half.] Twitter: @TheHistoryOfTh2 Facebook: The History of the Americans Podcast Selected references for this episode Alfred A. After the killing of John Oldham and his crew at Block Island, the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony mobilized an expedition of 90 men under the command of John Endicott. The goal was to deter Pequot aggression, but Endicott would prove, yet again, to be a stern and inflexible man who would fundamentally blunder into full-scale war with the Pequots. In this episode we look at Endicott's raid, the attempt by the Pequots to seduce the Narragansetts into an alliance, the skillful diplomacy of Roger Williams, and the attack by the Pequots on Fort Saybrook in retaliation. We end the episode with one last missed opportunity for peace. This episode covers:  our cont'd serialization of Winthrop the Younger's alchemical Rosicrucian plantation; the enabling of his settlement of the Pequot lands of Nameaug/ New London by his daddy's war against the Pequot; the complex territorial power dynamics b/w Winthrop Jr., the Mohegan chief Uncas, the Pequot Robin Cassacinamon, & the Connecticut & Massachusetts colonies; Winthrop's attempt to use his alchemedicine practice to consolidate power & respect among Pequot by posing as a "powwaw" (medicine doctor); Uncas's strategic wifing up & the rad counter-revolutionary moment when Robin helped a Pequot woman escape from her enslavement in Winthrop Sr.'s compound in Boston; Uncas & his war band's raid on New London—attempt to assert his power over Pequot villagers & make his tributaries return to his camp; the rare instance where the colonial authorities sided w/ Uncas (an indigenous sachem) instead of English grievances; Winthrop's enslavement of Robin; Uncas's obstruction of Winthrop the Younger's shipments of ore from his Tantiusque mine site... ...a brief Puritanical backlash against alchemy in the 1640s, & Winthrop Jr.'s ally Robert Child's house arrest; Child's dissident faction, which petitioned the colonies to change their enfranchisement laws & push MA + CT to become more religiously tolerant... ...William Pynchon's defense of Robert Child's crew; his "heretical" text The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption; William Pynchon family's gentry status & property-holdings in Chelmsford; his status as churchwarden & "Matthew Yglesias-like hall monitoring" of his fellow villagers (basically he was a pain in everyone's ass); Pynchon fam's decision to join the Puritan emigres to NE for economic reasons; his founding of Roxbury & Springfield; preexisting relationship w/ the Winthrop's; the tragic smallpox epidemic that killed 12,000 indigenous in the Connecticut River Valley in 1633, "clearing the way" for Pynchon's Springfield; Pynchon's land & fur speculation; his role as colonial treasurer; the Springfielders' belief that Connecticut indigenous cursed their settlement by invoking Hobbamock; Pynchon as magistrate & overlord of his village; his prosecution of Hugh & Mary Parsons for witchcraft, which may have acted as a convenient distraction from his heresy case; Pynchon's proto-capitalist system of keeping villagers indebted to him indefinitely so he could work them to death, particularly Hugh Parsons; witch's teats, purple milk, a calf w/ 3 heads, witch-y night terrors, UAP lights over Boston, bloody rain, & other "Memorable Providences"; Mary Parson's shock confession of witchcraft & death in prison; Pynchon's Biblical exegesis of the Atonement; & his return to Old England... ...a mapping of W. Pynchon's powerful descendants; Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables & the Pynchon fam's piss-iness that he "slandered" them; a glossing of Thomas Pynchon's early life, matriculation at Cornell, Navy deployment, Greenwich Village connections, & early writing career; a semi-close-reading (possibly schizo) of one of Pynchon's earliest stories, the spy-caper "Under the Rose" (which was repurposed in V. & Slow Learner), especially the rampant Rosicrucian symbolism & wordplay; his use of his colonial heritage; & other speculations... Songs: | Maas — “San Narciso” | | The Insect Trust — “The Eyes of a New York Woman” | | 15 seconds of... Dropkick Murphys — “Shipping Up to Boston” ...for comedic effect | | Sheb Wooley — “The Purple People Eater” | | Radiohead — “We Drink Young Blood” | | Greenfield Leisure — “Too Fat to Frug” |

When the English colonists first came to the New World there was friction but, given the limits of the colonists population and power, no large scale conflict. The Abenaki homelands consisted of most of modern day New England and North East Canada. At first they had no issue with the English, so long as they stuck to the coasts. The fishing and fur trading hubs created by the newcomers was as a commercial positive for the Abenaki. The issue arose when the English population grew and the colonists began to settle the interior lands. The Abenaki were hard pressed as they fought the mighty Iroquois for domination of the fur trade and now found themselves dealing with a growing threat from the Europeans. The slaughter and sacking of a key Pequot village along the Mystic River in 1637 was one of many such defeats that finally made the situation clear to the Abenaki; the only way for them to maintain their homelands was through violence...Check us out on Instagram and Twitter just search Cauldron!  Thanks for listening! For sources email me at cburke111@cauldronpodcast.comMusic - Alpha Mission by Jimena Contreras courtesy of Youtube free sound library

It's that time of year people! Are you in the Holiday spirit yet?! Thanks for tuning into this very Christmas-centric episode where we hit on everything from the 11th Annual Santa's Bobbin' into town in Pequot Lakes to catching up with the founder of the Best Christmas Ever Movement! So... First, yes we give our friend Tyler Gardner a call to discuss updates the at the latest city council meeting (which a lot of city tax talk was had), and also his involvement with this year's Santa's Bobbin into Town event. If you can make it into Pequot on Saturday evening, that will be the place to be. Plus it'll make Tyler really happy as you'll be able to witness the first ever "Mayor's Tree Lighting" in the park. Next, as mentioned earlier, Colton and Jacob call up their pal Don Liimatainen (who is the Founder of the Best Christmas Ever Movement), to talk about what he's been up to. They discuss the history of BCE, their latest event at Scheels Eden Prairie, and some updates to one of the fastest growing Christmas Charity/Organization in Minnesota. Americans celebrate a holiday they call Thanksgiving. It is a time where they share food and time with families, watch commercialized parades on TV, and then (some) finish their day by watching a professional football game. For indigenous people whose traditional territories are encroached upon each and every day, "Thanksgiving" is actually a day of Mourning. In this episode of Native Opinion, we take our listeners to the National Day of Mourning event hosted by the United American Indians Of New England. Listeners will hear indigenous perspectives on a wide variety of subjects at this event during the American lie of a holiday called "Thanksgiving." For myself, I do spend time with my family, and share a nice meal. However, I am NOT celebrating this day as a holiday. Instead, today is one of my national days of mourning. I am thinking about my Pequot ancestors who unwillingly gave their lives for this country. Not through a military war, but instead, they had their lives destroyed by this country through acts of genocide. Their deaths were literally celebrated by the first colonial settlers under the first established American colony in Massachusetts. That celebration in 1637 marked the first American thanksgiving.

Our guest on this show is Jennifer Lee, Northern Narragansett Educator and Board member of the Nolumbeka Project [https://nolumbekaproject.org/], an organization dedicated to honoring the Northeastern Tribal Heritage of the Connecticut River Valley. The word Nolumbeka is Abenaki for “the calm waters between the rapids.” Jennifer Lee, Grandmother, bark basket maker, and culture bearer, provides histories, insights and perspectives of Native Peoples of the Northeast. The Books of Numbers and Deuteronomy detail the journey of the Israelites toward the Promised Land, where—if the story is to be believed—Mosheh called them to exterminate entire peoples (Dt. 20:17). In this episode, Father Jayme explores the feminine imagery that filled the Tent of Meeting where the Israelites encountered their God, the many ways in which this structure and the later Jerusalem Temple resembled the pagan religions of surrounding cultures, the priesthood that served the Tabernacle and Temple, various taboos concerning menstruation, child birth and death, and the absolutely unbelievable story of subsequent conquest in the name of God. It would be tempting to relegate such stories to the past—except that one to eight million people died in the Americas as a result of the Spanish conquest by “sword and cross” and even today one major U.S. holiday is, when all the myths are stripped away, a day of “thanksgiving” for the genocide of 700 Pequot inhabitants of the land claimed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Have you seen the latest issue of Extraordinary Catholics magazine? Check out other podcasts by and for Inclusive Catholics! Support Extraordinary Catholics podcast!
