Have you ever wished you could go inside of a book? You could travel to a new place, see new sights, potentially live a different life altogether — all from the page. From New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn comes Astral Library, a fantastical novel where books are not merely objects, but doors to different worlds, different adventures, and different futures. After growing up in the foster care system, protagonist Alix Watson came to believe one thing: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and letting her dreams of higher education fall to the wayside, Alix takes refuge in the reading room at the Boston Public Library, reading her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of faraway lands night after night. One day, she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless guardian of the Astral Library, where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives inside their favorite books. All seems well until a shadowy enemy emerges and threatens everyone inside. As danger draws closer, Alix and the Librarian try to escape, fleeing places like the back alleys of the Sherlock Holmes series, the Regency-era drawing rooms of Jane Austen, and the decadent parties of The Great Gatsby, to name a few. In journeying through books, Quinn may offer insight into where readers truly belong. Kate Quinn is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction. A native of Southern California, she attended Boston University, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in classical voice. A lifelong history buff, she has written four novels in the Empress of Rome Saga and two books set in the Italian Renaissance before turning to the 20th century with The Alice Network, The Huntress, The Rose Code, The Diamond Eye, and The Briar Club. The Astral Library is her first foray into magic realism. She and her husband now live in Maryland with their rescue dogs. Elise Hooper spent several years writing for television and online news outlets before getting a MA and teaching high-school literature and history. Her debut novel The Other Alcott was a nominee for the 2017 Washington Book Award. Three more novels—Learning to See, Fast Girls, and Angels of the Pacific—followed, all centered on the lives of extraordinary but overlooked historical women. Her newest book, The Library of Lost Dollhouses, was inspired by a dollhouse that's been in her family for five generations. Elise lives in Seattle with her husband and two daughters. New York Times bestselling author and renowned historical fiction novelist, Kate Quinn, spoke with us about the importance of libraries, reading for mental health, and a love letter to both in her latest novel, THE ASTRAL LIBRARY. Kate Quinn describes herself as a "librarian fine delinquent turned bestseller" and is celebrated for her meticulously researched historical fiction, often highlighting resilient women in WWI, WWII, and ancient Rome. Key works include The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Diamond Eye. Her latest, already another NY Times bestseller, is a pivot to magical realism with The Astral Library, a fantasy novel about a secret book sanctuary. NPR called it, “Engrossing, suspenseful, and authentic.” New York Times bestselling author Sarah Penner wrote, “Only Kate Quinn could give us a book this inventive, this fun, and this completely addictive. If you've ever wished to tumble straight into your favorite novel, here's your chance.” [Discover The Writer Files Extra: Get 'The Writer Files' Podcast Delivered Straight to Your Inbox at writerfiles.fm] [If you're a fan of The Writer Files, please click FOLLOW to automatically see new interviews. Kate Quinn has a rare talent. She can drop you into another time period so completely that you forget you're reading, then hit you with a detail that makes you realize how much of women's history has been ignored, softened, or simply left out. In our first Friday Fiction episode, I sit down with the New York Times bestselling author behind her newest release, The Astral Library, The Briar Club,  The Alice Network, The Rose Code, and my personal favorite, The Diamond Eye to talk about where that power comes from and what it costs to do it well.We start with the origin story that shaped everything, a librarian mom who became her first reader and a dad who quietly modeled what real partnership looks like. From there, we get honest about the vulnerability of sharing drafts, the weird confidence a writer has to carry, and why deadlines can be a gift. Kate also walks through the creative leap into magical realism with The Astral Library, plus the nerves of releasing something new when readers expect a certain kind of historical fiction. We also dig into research ethics and critical thinking, from spotting propaganda in memoirs to reading for bias and noticing what a source refuses to say. If you love libraries, hate book bans, write fiction, or just want a smarter way to read history, this conversation is for you!!Subscribe for more author interviews, share this with a reader who loves historical fiction, and leave a rating and review so more book people can find Babes in Bookland.Thank you! In this episode, I share leadership lessons inspired by the novel The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn and the story of a Ukrainian historian who became an elite sniper during World War II.What stood out most was not the war story itself, but the quiet power of a woman who led with composure, emotional intelligence, and precision in a world that underestimated her. If you have ever felt pressure to toughen up or change who you are to be taken seriously, this conversation is for you. What You'll Learn:How quiet confidence can be more powerful than noiseWhy emotional intelligence strengthens leadershipHow competence builds natural authorityKey Takeaways:Softness and strength can coexist in leadershipYou do not need to mimic others to be respectedPrecision and composure build lasting influenceCall to Action:Think about one place in your life where you have felt pressure to change who you are to lead. Welcome back! Today, I want to do a deep dive into supplements. This is for our health series. Of course, there's no way I can't talk about supplements. I've been reading and studying the supplement world for a long time.    My goal today is to give you a realistic look at supplements and what they can and can't do. I want to debunk the myth that we can get the majority of everything we need from our food alone. I have some really interesting data to support this. So whether you love them or hate them, this will be a fascinating episode for you.   Favorite Quotes:  03:00 - “Even if you're eating really healthy, it is very difficult for you to eat enough food to get your minimum RDA levels of vitamins and minerals every day.” 04:01 - “Most important is a multivitamin. A multivitamin is like your daily safety net. It's gonna fill in the gaps where your diet will fall short.” 05:28 - “Another one that I'm obsessed with and I think everyone should take as a supplement is magnesium. Magnesium is a powerhouse. I love it because magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in your body.”  18:13 - “Multivitamins help us feel better in the time that we have to live.” 21:48 - “However many years the Lord has given us, we want to feel good. We want to live them abundantly. We want to thrive. We don't just want to limp through life and that takes educating ourselves. It takes empowering ourselves.”   Recommendations: This week I'm currently loving The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. It's historical fiction that dives into the lives of three women code breakers during WWII. If you're like me and haven't read it yet, you just may love it.   I know what great song you'll love, Everything Has Breath by Bryan and Katie Torwalt and Jesus Culture. It's upbeat. It's the perfect song to put on, roll the windows down, and sing and praise through it all.   Things I love and think you will too: Pure Encapsulations    Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega-3    Pure Encapsulations O.N.E.
