With warmer weather comes more insects and the potential for bug bites. As with any topic, pregnancy adds an additional layer of concern about bug bites. When you are pregnant, increased skin sensitivity can make itchy or painful bug bites more bothersome. Some illnesses spread by insects, like the Zika virus, pose additional dangers during pregnancy. Plus, you need to be cautious about exposure to chemical ingredients found in many insect repellants. The good news is there is a lot you can do to mitigate your risk of insect bites during pregnancy, and there are repellants that are safe to use when you are expecting. With summer fast-approaching, it's important to keep yourself protected from all kinds of exposure! In this episode, Dr. Lara Varden, in-house clinician of the DNA Company is joined by Dr. Guerry Grune, PhD, P.A., the CTO and Founder of 3rd Rock Essentials. Guerry shares how his life might have been one long (part-time) endless summer if it hadn't been for three events that led him to create 3rd Rock—and change sunscreen history forever.During the summertime, it is not uncommon for us to spend more time outdoors. This comes with great benefits but also has cons when it comes to the topic of the forces of nature - the UV rays of the sun, and the emergence of bugs that are out to bite you. With this in mind, Dr. Lara and Dr. Guerry discuss ways in getting through being in the sun. First, the episode tackles how to deal with bug bites, poison ivy, hives, and other infections. These cause a variety of itches due to the toxins causing a sudden acidity on the skin. These are not entirely preventable but definitely can be soothed with the right products specifically those that contain high concentrations of zinc oxide. Dr. Lara and Dr. Guerry delve into how this substance works as a skin protectant to aid various skin conditions.Secondly, they dive into the importance of sunscreen. We often assume that higher SPF already guarantees better protection but there's more than meets the eye when it comes to fully protecting the skin from the harsh rays of the sun. They discuss the different components of sunscreen that makes it safe not just for human consumers, but for the reef as well. In fact, Dr. Guerry showcases how his formulation of sunscreen is approved by the Coral Reef Foundation.Lastly, they impart knowledge on how silver is a miracle element that contributes to better gut health. In line with this, they also share other tips on lifestyle and health in general that will allow you to be at your most optimal level of health throughout all of your planned activities. If you wish to learn more about the article mentioned by Dr. Lara Varden, you may do so by opening this link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8835820/If you wish to learn more from Guerry Grune and 3rd Rock Essentials, you may do so through the following links:Their website at https://3rdrockessentials.com/Their Instagram Account at https://www.instagram.com/3rdrockessentials/Try out 3rd Rock Essentials at a discounted rate by fulfilling your purchase through this link https://3rdrockessentials.com/discount/DNA17 or inputting the code “DNA17” for an additional 17% off from May 24 (12AM ET) to May 28 (12PM ET) on top of the Memorial Day discount!▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! Have you ever considered that plants can be broken into groups, just like plants?By classifying plants into their taxonomic order, we can automatically understand a few things about them. For example, what type of mouth-part do they have, and what does that mean for the type of plant damage or predatory method they're capable of?What types of chemicals work on them, and which ones don't? Which beneficials eat which pests? And are there any truly neutral insects out there, or are they all having some type of "positive" or "negative" impact on the garden?Entomologist and ecologist Dr Ian Smith is back on the show, and he's going to break things down for us.Here's the cheat sheet for which insects belong where:Diptera (flys)The GoodHoverflyRobber fliesThe badLeaf minersFruit flies The inbetweenBlowflies, bottle flies and house fliesFungus gnatsColeoptera (Beetles)BeneficialsLadybird (Coccinellidae)Ground beetles (Carabidae)Rove beetle (Staphylinidae)The BadsLeaf and flea beetlesScarabaeidaeWeevilsThe neutralsPlague Soldier BeetleHymenoptera (wasps and ants)The goodParasitoid waspsThe badGall waspsThe in-betweenAntsEuropean waspsAcariformes (Mites)Predatory mitesSpider mites and earth mitesHemiptera (True bugs)The goodAssassin bugs (and similar)The badAphids (Aphididae family)Whiteflies (Aleyrodidae family)Leafhoppers (Cicadellidae family)Stink bugs (Pentatomidae family)Lace bugs (Tingidae family)Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae family)Scale (Coccoidea)LepidopteraMothsButterfliesBlattodeaCockroachesTermitesOthersAraneae (Spiders)Lacewing (Neuroptera)Dragonflies (Odonata)Praying mantis (Mantises)EPISODE LINKSFollow Ian on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EcologIanIan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/driansmithMy LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-fuller-180908208/Rove beetle wing folding video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNrXvdOjylAVelvet mite images: https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=8b94fdf9c54254b4&rlz=1C1UEAD_en-GBAU938AU938&sxsrf=ACQVn0_5qreTzLiKH2svJl2lB_o_9HUVOQ:1710052567103&q=velvet+mite&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiDrbyeiumEAxXLsFYBHUWRC-YQ0pQJegQIDRAB FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @PlantsGrowHere / Facebook: @PlantsGrowHerePodcast - Join our Facebook group!VISIT OUR WEBSITEwww.PlantsGrowHere.comLET'S WORK TOGETHERWe're always on the hunt for interesting people, doing interesting things. TWiP solves the case of the Hiker from Queens who Denies Bug Bites, and reveal two different malaria experimental vaccines that target different parts of the parasite life cycle. Additional symptoms included a stinging pain in different parts of his extremities, fatigue, abdominal cramps and bowel irregularities. On exam he was resting comfortably and his vitals were normal, but the patient appears very distressed by his symptoms. His left eye showed signs of irritation, including redness and swelling. A detailed history reveals travel to the Caribbean about 4 years ago and several short trips to central and east Africa, all between 5 and 10 years ago. His initial labs were grossly unremarkable and a chest x-ray showed no abnormalities. The patient himself suspected a specific parasitic etiology of his symptoms, so we performed a number of serologies and stool examinations in search of parasitic diseases. None of the tests revealed evidence of an ongoing infection. He is HIV negative and not sexually active at the moment. He has no pets and no other recent travel history. He eats a normal diet and has been out of work for two years. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this fantastic project! Then, in The Craft (& Fain), they discuss whether they want to continue writing their novel in the past tense, or whether they'd rather change to the present tense. In The Mailroom, Liz and Sarah answer a question from a Pre-WGA writer about how to approach an established writer with helpful information.
