If Life is a Journey on Water…

If life is a journey on water, with our conscious mind above the waterline and our deep unconscious beneath, and if all the people in the world are drifting, surfing, drowning and sailing on that surface, shouldn't there be a person on a wooden chair in the sky above the beach watching over it all?Shouldn't there be a person? And a beach? The people along the sandAll turn and look one way. They turn their back on the land. They look at the sea all day.As long as it takes to passA ship keeps raising its hull; The wetter ground like glassReflects a standing gullThe land may vary more; But wherever the truth may be—The water comes ashore,And the people look at the sea. They cannot look out far. They cannot look in deep. But when was that ever a barTo any watch they keep?– Robert Frost“Calm yourself, Little One. There is always a person. There is always a beach.”I had an idea for the story, which by the way has been in my head for about 20 years now, and all it was to begin with was an image of a boy in a wheelchair flying a kite on a beach. And that picture was just as clear in my mind as it could be. And it wanted to be a story, but it wasn't a story, it was just a picture. As clear as clear as clear…– Stephen King, May 29, 2013The last time the Stones were out on the road, between 2005 and 2007, they took in more than half a billion dollars – the highest-grossing tour of all time. On Copacabana Beach, in Rio de Janeiro, they played to more than a million people. Few spectacles in modern life are more sublimely ridiculous than the geriatric members of the Stones playing the opening strains of ‘Street Fighting Man.'– David Remnick, The New Yorker, Nov. 1, 2010Something of the sense of holiness on islands comes, I think, from this strange, elastic geography. Islands are made larger, paradoxically, by the scale of the sea that surrounds them. The element which might reduce them, which might be thought to besiege them, has the opposite effect. The sea elevates these few acres into something they would never be if hidden in the mass of the mainland. The sea makes islands significant…– Adam Nicolson, Sea RoomOn the edge of the water were a pair of waystones, their surfaces silver against the black of the sky; the black of the water. One stood upright, a finger pointing into the sky. The other lay flat, extending into the water like a short stone pier.No breath of wind disturbed the surface of the water. So as we climbed out onto the fallen stone the stars reflected themselves in double fashion; as above, so below. It was as if we were sitting amid a sea of stars.– Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind, p. 216This is the land of Narnia, said the Faun, where we are now; all that lies between the lamp-post and the great castle of Cair Paravel on the eastern sea. And you—you have come from the wild woods of the west?I—I got in through the wardrobe in the spare room, said Lucy.– C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the WardrobePennie and I have had the flu for more days than is supposed to be possible, and I have still not recovered my voice. There were days when I was not sure I dwelt in the land of the living.“The rain to the wind said,You push and I'll pelt.'They so smote the garden bedThat the flowers actually knelt,And lay lodged–though not dead.I know how the flowers felt.”― Robert FrostAroo,Roy H. WilliamsNOTE FROM INDY – Taking care of Pennie and Roy prohibited me from putting together a rabbit hole for you. Sorry.

Welcome back to The Logosians Podcast! This is the 4th and final part of our discussion of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series.  Its been a fun ride, and we can't wait to continue with more Narnia episodes in the future. The Lion and the Ring series episode 10 covers everything from the Pevensies meeting Aslan at his camp, to Peter's first kill, the Stone Table, the Deep Magic, and the defeat of the White Witch. We cover Aslan's death and resurrection at the Stone Table, and the significance of Lewis' views on the atonement. The book concludes with the coronation of Peter the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just, and Lucy the Valiant at Cair Paravel, and then the hunting of the White Stag resulting in the Pevensies returning through the Wardrobe to England. Along the way we go down the rabbit hole on duty, honor, courage, and what it means to be a man. This leads us to a discussion on the terrible lack of competent and capable men, particularly husbands and fathers, in television and media today, particularly shows aimed at children. The Logosians Podcast is made up of a fellowship of good friends and is centered around Faith, Freedom, Fatherhood, and Fantasy. Join us on our quest through the entire legendarium of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and more! Featured in today's episode are Joshua Jolly, Dillon Alexander, Charlie Bates, Derek Johnson, and Tim Ellen. Audio edited by Nick Coltharp. Perhaps no writer or thinker is more often quoted around classical Christian schools than famed Oxford and Cambridge professor C.S. Lewis.  Most of our schools engage Lewis' writings through the K-12 journey, inevitably reading his Chronicles of Narnia series, but the Cair Paravel Latin School takes Lewis to an even higher level of engagement, and the fruit both enriches the educational experience and inspires the students. Join me for this intriguing conversation with two members of the their teaching staff. You will find even more to love about Lewis to not only apply in your school but also your home.BIOGRAPHIESCraig Congdon:Born and raised in Topeka KS, I attended Cair Paravel Latin School from 1st-12th grade. Afterward, I attended John Brown University, majoring in Bible and Spanish, and then headed to Dallas Theological Seminary where I earned my Masters in Theology. After graduating, I returned to Topeka where I pastored a small church for 5 years while teaching part-time at CPLS. I now teach full-time as a rhetoric school teacher. While at CPLS I have taught, Bible, hermeneutics and theology, rhetoric, philosophy, Greek, Spanish, and even a dance elective. I also direct the HS dramas and coach the boy's volleyball team.Christine Ewing:Lover of Narnia and a Kansas girl through and through, I was raised in a small north central Kansas town. I attended Kansas State University where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. My husband and I moved to Topeka upon college graduation and have sent our children to Cair Paravel Latin School. As Caspian and company journey to Aslan's How, the sacred place of the ancient Stone Table, they encounter Miraz's armies and must decide, once and for all, if they should wind Susan's Horn to summon the help that, according to legend, is prophesied to come. Despite some disbelief in the ranks, Caspian chooses to sound the Horn and send messengers to the two other Ancient Places of Narnia: Lantern Waste and Cair Paravel.

Evoking the notion of sehnsucht, or the inconsolable longing for beauty and joy in the human heart, the children's discovery of Cair Paravel in ruins begins the process of awakening within them a remembrance of who they really are: kings and queens of Narnia. This sense of nostalgia and desire, propelled by Lewisian images of ancient wonder, reminds us of our own inconsolable longings for Eden, a magical world that, unfortunately, we have lost as well.

The Silver Chair concludes with a beautiful and touching completion of the Quest and reunion with Aslan. Closing themes include the following: (1) Joy and order are hardwired into Narnia (The Great Snow Dance of Narnia that Jill encounters when she climbs out through the hole from the Underworld is a glorious and ordered and precise dance of exceeding joy in which the creatures revel); (2) Being in the Will of Aslan confers Goodness and authority (Seeking after Aslan and purposing to do his Will changes those who follow him and changes them forever in every aspect of their being); (3) Evil never sleeps and has its own unique strategy for every age (The Witch, masquerading as the Lady of the Green Kirtle, lures Prince Rilian into her thrall after having killed his mother years before, just as the White Witch centuries before in Narnia purposed to bring Evil into Aslan's newly formed creation); (4) Aslan is with us in our deepest sorrows and will bring us Home (As the elderly King Caspian's ship comes to Cair Paravel, there is great joy that the aged king will finally get to see his long-lost son, Prince Rilian, again. After they embrace, just as Caspian raises his hand to bless Rilian, Caspian dies. The exuberant joy turns to terrible sorrow at his passing, and as Jill and Eustace are overcome with grief they are brought into the presence of Aslan); (5) Aslan's blood gives us resurrection life (Aslan's blood plus the living water enables eternal life with Him in Aslan's country); and (6) Aslan cares about injustice and the wrongs we suffer (Rather than end the story with life in Aslan's Country, Lewis has more to say to us about God and his concern for justice in this world as well, shown as Aslan helps the children right some wrongs at Experiment House).
