John Humphrey and Andrew Gordon from Cinepals journey into the magical world of Narnia with their reaction to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (2005), directed by Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Prince of Egypt). Based on C.S. Lewis' timeless novel, this beloved fantasy adventure brings to life iconic characters like Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley, The Sisterhood of Night), Edmund Pevensie (Skandar Keynes, Ferrari), Susan Pevensie (Anna Popplewell, Reign), and Peter Pevensie (William Moseley, The Royals). Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange, Snowpiercer) stuns as the chilling White Witch, and Liam Neeson (Taken, Schindler's List) lends his commanding voice to Aslan, the noble lion. James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Split) delivers a memorable performance as Mr. Tumnus, and Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter, Moulin Rouge!) appears as Professor Kirke. John and Andrew react to the film's most iconic scenes, including Lucy's first journey through the wardrobe, Mr. Tumnus meeting Lucy, the terrifying confrontation with the White Witch, Aslan's heartbreaking sacrifice at the Stone Table, and the epic final battle. Whether you're a longtime Narnia fan or new to the series, this reaction explores the magic, emotion, and spectacle that made this film a classic. Here's an illustration to start. My wife's favorite book among the Chronicles of Narnia is _The Magician's Nephew_. It is the sixth of the seven in publication order, though it's actually the creation account and so first of them all in terms of Narnian chronology. The reason she likes it the most is because of the treasure of finding out the origin of the tree from which the wood came that was used to make the wardrobe in the Professor's house. You can read the series oldest to newest if you prefer grape juice narratives; but the author has poured this round of plot wine to gladden your heart. Someone says, Who cares about where the wood for the wardrobe came from? The author did, and he thought it a thrill to reveal it at the right time. Don't you want to at least see what he cares about before deciding it's of no value to you? The same author who had an origin story for the wood in the wardrobe had an even deeper origin for the Narnian law that “if a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Stone Table would crack, and Death itself would start working backwards.” Aslan's resurrection is quite the spoiler to the wicked. Nothing beats the suffering and death and resurrection story in the gospel of Christ. That news is of first importance, the true myth at both the most woeful low and the highest peak, revealed at the right time. And what we're reading in Romans 9-11 may be next best in terms of glory stories. We're finding out things that could have been known but mostly weren't noticed, things that look one way on the surface but work together toward a perfect last page. It's more than entertainment, it's faith-food; read meat protein that builds hope-muscles. The righteous live from faith to faith. That means the righteous don't live by works, but it also means the righteous don't live by sight. We live by every word that proceeds from God. What about when we groan in a world of sin and suffering? What about when we're led like sheep to the slaughter? Will His Word hold? What about when He said that He would give Israel a new heart? What about that covenant word? His Word doesn't fail. Read the story, follow the foreshadowing, and rejoice in your part. # The Remnant - Chosen by Grace (verses 1-6)At the beginning of chapter 9 Paul pointed out Israel's privileges. At the beginning of chapter 10 Paul expressed his desire and prayer for Israel's salvation. He's talking like this because Israel, for the most part, were more like Pharaoh than Moses; they refused to obey the Lord though He gave them multiple chances. Yet “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people” (Romans 10:21). It's time to ask the hard question: **I ask, then, has God rejected his people?**The Jews, as a nation, those who shared biological descent and ethnic particulars and often specific geographical boundaries, were *God's people*. Yahweh chose them (Deuteronomy 7:6), He led them, He redeemed them, He gave them His law, He made covenants with them, He established them (2 Samuel 7:23-24). All of them were His elect people and yet not all of them were *elect* persons. It was (and is) possible for Israelites to be one of God's people in two ways, though many have only been in one way. Jesus came to His own and His own received Him not. It was not priests of pagan deities that put Him to death, but the high priest of Israel in the Lord's name. What a turn of events. Did God turn away from His Word to Israel? Is He *done* with His covenant to them, finally had too much of their apostasy, their refusal to come to Him with His hands held out? **By no means!** Paul's conversion was at least one proof. **For I myself am an Israelite, a descendent of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin,** a Jewish trifecta. To the Philippians he added that he was “a Hebrew of Hebrews” (Philippians 3:5). That at least *one* Jew confessed Jesus as Lord meant that God hadn't rejected His people entirely, and Paul had been one of the worst offenders (1 Timothy 1:15-16).**God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.** Samuel told the people as much in 1 Samuel 12:22. “The LORD will not forsake His people, for His great name's sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for Himself.” So also in Psalm 94:14, “The LORD will not forsake His people; He will not abandon His heritage.” In context that's *Israel* (even if we Gentile believers can sing it, confident in its application to us). He chose them with full-knowledge, with full-intentions for them. “The ‘foreknowing' is the guarantee” (Murray).Paul gives an example.> Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God's reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” (Romans 11:2b–4 ESV)Speaking of great stories (that the Jews at least should have known), this conversation between Elijah and the Lord happened *after* Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal and had to have his altar drenched and a trench filled before “the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench” (1 Kings 18:38). But when Jezebel heard that the priests were killed she sent word that she was going to make Elijah's life like theirs within 24 hours (1 Kings 19:2). So he ran. And in the wilderness he prays, in an exhausted if not somewhat exaggerated self-pity, that he's alone; he says he's the “only” one left twice (1 Kings 19:10, 14). But the Lord said, **”I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal”** (1 Kings 19:18).God preserved, *for Himself* (not in the Hebrew of 1 Kings but supplemented by Paul for emphasis), some as no-compromisers. They would not give knee-service to false gods. There's application to the current situation. **So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.** Paul was included in that remnant (see also Romans 9:27). The Jews were—and are—God's people, His chosen nation (in a way that no other nation has or will be. That doesn't mean a nation can't be a Christian nation, in self-confessed allegiance to Christ as Lord. But even a nation such as that isn't foreknown like Israel.) This **remnant** has been around now through 20 centuries post-Paul; all are not lost. They will be around in every generation until the fulness of Israel is saved, more about as chapter 11 continues. But it is not by Israel's doing, or the remnant's special wisdom, that they are saved. **If it is by grace, it is no longer on the bases of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.** The gospel of grace includes justification by faith alone, for the elect alone. # The Rest - Hardened as Planned (verses 7-10)So **what then?** (*Quid ergo?*) There's a remnant, at least, but what about the rest? **Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened**. This goes back to Romans 9. God's purpose according to election stands, for nations (e.g., Israel not Egypt) and persons (e.g., Israel/Jacob not Esau), for temporal and eternal issues. Israel kept seeking, with *zeal*, a righteousness of their own that caused them to stumble (Romans 9:31-32). That the **elect obtained it** isn't meaning that they found it by their superior wisdom, but that they obtained the gift, by grace, as verses 5-6 make clear. **Hardened** here is a form (aorist passive) of the word πωρόω, with the nuance of “to petrify” or in medical terms “to cause a stone to form (as in the bladder) or a callus which unites fractured bones.” Its figurative usage means “to make without feeling, to deaden.” The text does not indicate that they were hardened because of unbelief but instead that the hardening produced unbelief. Paul quotes Isaiah and Moses yet again, then a psalm of David to corroborate. > as it is written, > “God gave them a spirit of stupor, > eyes that would not see > and ears that would not hear, > down to this very day.” (Romans 11:8 ESV)Romans 11:8 is a mashup of Isaiah 29:10 and Deuteronomy 29:4. It's one thing for God to harden Pharaoh's heart; Pharaoh was a pagan after all. This is God giving a **spirit of stupor** to God's chosen nation; they were numbed, dazed, drawing a blank. Jesus talked about this a surprising amount (see just one example in Matthew 13:14-15). > And David says, > “Let their table become a snare and a trap, > a stumbling block and a retribution for them; > let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, > and bend their backs forever.” (Romans 11:9–10 ESV)This comes from Psalm 69:22-23, originally a curse directed against David's enemies. Their daily bread become a trap; they wanted the feasting without the fear of the Lord. Their unbelief turned them out of freedom into being servants with their backs bent under heavy burdens. # ConclusionThe story is about to explode; a seed was planted, a tree grew, the tree was blown down, but more wonderful fruit is coming from it. God could have chosen full acceptance by Israel from the start, and from there a simple sequential spreading of faith to the Gentiles. Instead God chose that a majority in Israel would reject the promised Christ, then to send the good news beyond Israel so that many would confess Christ as Lord among many nations, so that Israel would be provoked to turn back to the promised Christ (see Romans 11:11-12). It's Israel's story, and it's not finished. What are you supposed to do with this? Don't pout like Elijah, don't doubt God's purpose of election, and recognize the riches of God's grace you've received.----------## ChargeHave you noticed that I've not once, not ever, charged you to go be a pastor, or a vocational missionary? That might be the calling for a few of you, but never the majority of the body. That means that whatever your gifts and whatever your spiritual maturity, *you* have good to do. Is it sharpening your intellectual acumen for the education of the saints and defense of the faith? Do it. Is it building up your hosting courage and getting outside your food prep comfort zone? Do it. Is it surviving another round of chemo, or another week of being pregnant, or seeking the Lord's help with a sadness that won't lift? Beloved, do that. Get grace for that. Give thanks for those who do what you can't do. Be jealousable where you're supposed to be, not where someone else is supposed to be. ## Benediction:> [M]ay our God may make you worthy of his calling and fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 1:11–12, ESV)

This is the final episode of Season 1 of the podcast. We've been talking about the role of the marketplace in fulfilling the Great Commission, and while that can seem like an “over there” conversation, there are undoubtedly unreached people groups in your local community. The “diaspora,” a term used to describe people groups who leave their homeland and scatter abroad among other nations, has brought those in need of the Gospel quite literally into our own backyard. This is an incredible Great Commission opportunity. We wrap up the podcast with a real-life example of how business fosters relationships that further the Kingdom. It's a powerful story with a shocking update that happened literally as we were recording this episode. You won't want to miss it! This week, we continue our conversation about Business as Missions (BAM) by drilling down into some of the ways the marketplace is being leveraged cross-culturally for global missions purposes. BAM has certainly been abused by some as a less than honest way to deceive local authorities into providing visas. We call those people “job fakers,” and they've given BAM a bad name in som circles. But that is not the BAM story we want to champion or explore. Episode 11 unpacks the Kingdom potential of “job takers” and “job makers” in advancing missions efforts around the world. We also look at the power of the “gig economy” to raise up cross-cultural missionaries. Marketplace skills are missionary skills. This week's missional moment features Part 2 of our fascinating conversation with Dick Brogden, the global leader of LiveDead and missionary to Saudi Arabia. A recent Barna survey revealed that half of all church-going Christians cannot identify the Great Commission. So before we dive deeply into the role of the marketplace in God's mission in the world, this episode goes back to the basics and unpacks the reality of Jesus' final instructions to us: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19) Over 3 billion people are considered unreached with the Good News of the Gospel today. That's 42% of the global population and rising. A huge portion of these people are what we call “inconveniently lost.” There are no Christians, no churches, no Bibles, no way for them to know about Jesus unless we make extreme sacrifices to go and tell them. This is the greatest injustice in the world today and one we are passionate about engaging as marketplace believers. For this week's missional moment, we talk to Greg Mundis, the Executive Director of Assemblies of God World Missions. Greg has served on both the frontlines and in executive leadership of this global missions movement for decades. What was God's original design for work and rest? Are these two concepts opposites? Are they enemies? This week on the podcast we talk about the “dance” of work and rest, and how embracing both as part of God's design for our lives is part of living in Gospel fullness. We also dive deeply into the topic of biblical retirement. This may be difficult for some of us to hear, but the modern Western definition of retirement is not in the Bible. Does this mean we're meant to work a grinding 8-5 job until our dying breath? Not at all. But reimagining retirement through the lens of the Gospel is an important exercise for every believer. Honoring God in our hiring practices seems way easier than honoring God in our firing practices. If the Gospel redeems all things, how can we both hire and fire people to the glory of God? It begins with seeing people the way God sees them. On this week's podcast, we talk about hiring and firing employees. People are more than cogs in a wheel or economic transactions to boost our bottom line. All human beings carry God's Image (Imago Dei), and yet sometimes working relationships have to end. There will never be a warm and fuzzy way to terminate someone's employment, but when we truly see people and not just transactions, we can love them well even when we have to say goodbye. Aslan's walk to the Stone Table - by Celia Redgate Forward they went again and one of the girls walked on each side of the Lion. But how slowly he walked! And his great, royal head drooped so that his nose nearly touched the grass. (from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis) As Aslan, of his own volition, makes his way to the place where he will be slain, we are reminded of Jesus' own stumbling journey along the Via Dolorosa, toward the place of His crucifixion. In this, He fulfilled His own words: “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down My life – only to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” (John 10:17-19) The intense sadness of this piece makes it suitable for us to use as we pray for many other heavy, grievous situations. The movie and TV industry have continually categorized the businessman as the villain. From Mr. Krabs to Gordon Gecko, the marketplace and money have become synonymous with power and greed. Why did this happen, and how does this impact the idea of our work being the fulfillment of the Great Commandment? There are plenty of examples of businesspeople genuinely being the bad guy, but these are the sin-broken counterfeit and not the real thing. On this week's podcast we discuss the real issue behind business and greed (hint: it's not the money). When we elevate anything above God, it hijacks God's original design for this life. Biblical business is about adding value, problem solving, and meeting needs of your fellow man – to love your neighbor as yourself. Keep God in the forefront and business won't be your idol, it will become your avenue to serve. For this week's missional moment, we talk to our friend Matthew Rohrs, Executive Director of Sinapis. Sinapis fosters entrepreneurial development in some of the poorest places around the globe. Even though our everyday work was created through the glorious energy of Genesis chapters 1 and 2, we experience our everyday work through the “thorns and thistles” of Genesis chapter 3. Most of us feel the exhaustion of a work life that is so far less than what God intended it to be. So how can we reframe that 8-5 (or whatever hours you work each day) through the lens of the Gospel? Redeemed by Jesus, our work actually becomes a daily opportunity to fulfill the Great Commandment – to worship God and love our neighbors as ourselves. On this week's podcast, we take a wilderness journey with the Israelites to see what old-school idol worship can teach us about our day-jobs. And we learn a new Greek word often used in ancient business transactions that quite literally changes everything. This week's missional moment features my dear friend Darren Messick. After spending 25 years at what some would consider the pinnacle of full-time ministry, Darren found himself back in the marketplace loading airplanes for a global shipping company. This vocational move had nothing to do with burnout or scandal. To the contrary, he truly believes God led him there. Darren's story is inspiring and his attitude is contagious. What Is Your Work Theology? S1E4

What is your Theology of Work? You have one even if you can't articulate it. For many of us, our work theology is more assumed than taught. Work must be the result of The Fall. Adam and Eve screwed up paradise and we all got stuck with a mediocre 8-5 as part of their punishment. So work is just this thing we have to endure to support our families until Jesus comes back and finally banishes this thing called work to hell with the devil and all his minions. Does that feel familiar at all? What if we told you that many of the things you believe about your everyday work aren't biblical at all? What if we reframe our theology of work around the truth? Would it solve all our job-related problems? Of course not. We still live with the "thorns and thistles" sin produced in this world. But it could give us a renewed picture of what everyday work can be this side of eternity. This week's Missional Moment features a wonderful conversation with our dear friend Ryan Crozier. Ryan was a pastor and an entrepreneur, and the Lord ultimately led him to the mission field utilizing his passion for both the Gospel and the marketplace to push the Kingdom of God forward in Eastern Europe. This 12 episode podcast looks at our everyday work through three big lenses: The Great Story, The Great Commandment, and The Great Commission. In Episode 3 we dive deeper into The Great Story. Most faith and work questions start with me. "I am a Christian and my faith is important tome. But I work in the marketplace. So how do I invite God into my work story?” That's a good question, but we think there's a better one. We don't invite God into our work story, He has graciously invited our work story into His. If our day jobs are really intended to be part of some great cosmic God-written narrative, what exactly is that story? In this episode, we walk through the biblical story arc from Genesis to Revelation and ask the question, “what does this Great Story have to do with what I get up and go do every day?” The conclusion? Everything. Our Missional Moment features Jonathan Barratt, President of the Project Rescue Foundation. Project Rescue is an powerful Christ-centered ministry working to free women and children from the evils of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Jonathan shares about the vital role of the marketplace in helping exploited women rebuild their lives and dignity as image bearers of God. In this inaugural episode of the Missional Marketplace Podcast, Darren and Erik introduce the premise for Season One of the show. This podcast is for Christians who work in the marketplace, but who carry a deep passion for God's mission in the world and want their everyday work to connect more deeply with that missional purpose (and who like to laugh a little bit along the way). In episode 1, we set the stage for this season-long conversation about faith, work, and the global mission of God in the world. Do you ever wrestle with any of these questions: Is there any eternal value to my day job? Is it possible to find gospel meaning in my “secular” career? If I really love Jesus, shouldn't I quit my job and go into full-time ministry? How does my everyday work have anything to do with God's mission in the world? We do, too. So we're going to talk about it over twelve drive-time length episodes built around Erik's brand new book called (strangely enough) Missional Marketplace: Finding Your Everyday Work in God's Eternal Plan. We also debut a weekly segment called the “Missional Moment,” where we hear from someone actually living out this tension in their everyday life. This week we talk to Tom, who sold the marketing business he pioneered and ran for over 20 years and became a missionary, but probably not in the way you would normally think of global missions work. Tom and his wife Patti now live cross-culturally and consult with business as mission missionaries and projects, using their marketplace skills to help take the gospel to the ends of the earth. If you have a passion for the Gospel, a passion for the mission of God in the world, a passion for every aspect of your life – including your day-job – to matter in the context of this faith you hold so dear, this podcast is for you. # Introduction There are stories too good to be told only once. Some people enjoy going over known information, they get edification in the repetition, others enjoy seeking out new information and adding it to their collection. But there is one story in particular that is always the same and yet keeps making all things new. A key element in these stories is when things are *bad*. David and Goliath is a genre; there was no way David could win. Aslan at the Stone Table is brutal; when you read it for the first time it seems like hope dies. The 2004 Red Sox were down three games to none in a seven games series against the Yankees; no professional team in any sport had ever won four in a row in that situation. Chamberlain's men were out of ammunition at the holding the Union's left flank at Little Round Top. We eat these stories up like meat on a charcuterie board. What I pray brings comfort and strength and joy to you today is not only our remembrance that the darkness of the cross is eclipsed by the light of Christ's resurrection, but also that the cyclical attacks of the evil one, as bad as they have been, continually lead to his own undoing. At no point is this more obvious than the cross. Let's look at the main text for this morning and then trace the evil one's series of brutal yet self-defeating blunders. > Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, > "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, > nor the heart of man imagined, > what God has prepared for those who love Him." > (1 Corinthians 2:6-9) Paul has been exalting the word of the cross since 1 Corinthians 1:18. That word is *folly* to the kind of man who can only see what's in front of him, the man who takes his cues from what's everyone else around him thinks. Christ crucified made no sense as a way of salvation and certainly not as a way of glory. Christ crucified obviously made sense as the way to shut Christ down. Killing Him was clearly the move to make Him look bad. # Surprising Power But it is preaching Christ crucified that is God's wisdom. Christ crucified is God's power. > For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the **power** of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV) > to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the **power** of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:24 ESV) > my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of **power**, (1 Corinthians 2:4 ESV) > so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the **power** of God. (1 Corinthians 2:5 ESV) The power of God is demonstrated in the crucifixion, which is a kind of divine *wisdom*, a wisdom that rulers missed, and in missing it they sealed not only their ignorance but their doom. Verse 6 doesn't change the subject from Christ crucified, but Paul does clarify that what sounded like a simple message--Christ crucified—is surprisingly powerful. **This age** is the current *aeon*, not just the first century, but is a *way* of looking at things. It's less a whenever and more a however of a fleshly, man-centered, and *God-hating* way. They are playing a game, so to speak, and the field is only what's in front of them. There can only be one winner, and the competition must be destroyed. The **rulers** of this age are not just the Jewish leaders or Roman officials, Pilate and Herod and soldiers. Those men are included, as are all the men ever who lie and murder to get their power. But there are also spiritual rulers, angels, who were behind the scenes and to some extent always have been involved. There are “rulers and authorities” that are clearly men, there are “rulers and authorities” that are clearly *not* men. But they follow the same playbook. # The Typical Play You know how some women are always learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7)? The evil one is *Always Losing and Never Coming to the Knowledge of the Truth*. The ancient serpent hated God's new image-bearers in the Garden of Eden, and for as much damage as he did to humanity, what he actually got was a specific, but not too specific, threat that became an obsession. “He shall bruise your head…” (Genesis 3:15). Who? When? How? Whether or not the “sons of God” (Genesis 6) were demons or demonically-possessed men, they tried to corrupt the seed of humanity in order to ruin the seed of the woman. What they got was not only a global demonstration of God's power, but a forever covenant of God's mercy. When news came that a child was born of a virgin, “the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it” (Revelation 12:4). Through Herod attempt was made to kill the boy, and what that got was more fulfillment of prophecy. # Winning That Isn't And of course, the cross is the ultimate *defeat* of rebels. The death of Christ fulfills prophecies *and* satisfies the Father's wrath *and* purchases our forgiveness and eternal life *and* is the very triumph over the spiritual enemies that thought they were playing the terminal move. Check mate was a trap door. Satan himself deceived Judas into betraying Jesus. Satan and the rulers and authorities, both in the spiritual realm and in the sphere of politics, wanted Jesus dead. And they got what they wanted. They accomplished the terminal move. Their envy and anger didn't end with mocking and beating, but with crucifixion. That should have been it, right? But they didn't understand the game they were in. They didn't understand the wisdom or power of God. They crucified Jesus but it was the crucifixion that purchased the death of rivalry and divisions (1 Corinthians 1:10). It purchased the death of slavery to the opinions of foolish men (1 Corinthians 1:25). It purchased the death of need for self-righteousness, let alone buying our way out of debt (1 Corinthians 1:30). It purchased the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), and the confidence that our faith does not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:5). It purchased the death of death. > Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself [Jesus] likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. (Hebrews 2:14–15 ESV) Death is the devil's move. It is his best weapon. But the wisdom and power of God is that death is beaten through death. If Satan knew what was going to happen, would he have stopped it? For however much Jesus' death was surprising to evil men, how much more to the evil one? # Wisdom That Isn't What the natural man can't see is that his pragmatism doesn't even work, which was supposed to be its advantage. It's self-limiting (to this age) and self-destructing, as they are **doomed to pass away** (ESV) or "who are coming to nothing" (NIV). Not only is this currently happening in their heyday, it is something they are doing to themselves (the substantival participle τῶν καταργουμένων is in the middle voice, so reflexive. Not only are they causing something to be powerless, they are doing it to themselves.) They are patting themselves on the back with one hand and with the other sawing off the limb they're sitting on. The wisdom of men wants immediate results. It's not mature, it's as demanding and far-seeing as a toddler screaming for a third helping of ice cream; the crash is inevitable. # God-Given Glory The Son of Man, however, is **the Lord of glory**, a title which is only found in 1 Corinthians 1:8, but already echoes in the age to come. Jesus is not only the glorious Lord, or the one who gives glory, but the very revelation of it. In Him is displayed the wisdom and power of God in defeating so-called rulers by their own selfish glory-grabbing. This wisdom of the word of the cross is part of the Lord's glory. It was also **decreed before the ages for *our* glory** (2:7). There is **glory**, *kavod* or *gravity* in Hebrew, weighty, substantial, and splendor with its Greek nuance. Here is magnificence. Here is meaning. Here is God's purpose for His elect, *predestined* before the ages by God. He determined the boundary line, προορίζω, mark a horizon (see also Romans 8:29). (Also, the cross was predetermined, Acts 4:28). All the powers of this age are sinking, slipping, fading in power and glory, while those who believe the word of the cross are being lifted, secured, and gaining in substance and color. His enemies are like the grass that pulls a concrete block onto itself, while we are being planted like trees beside living waters. **as it is written** in verse 9 readies us for revelation, and it must be a quote from Isaiah 64:4 and it seems a line from Isaiah 65:17. Not from empirical testing (eye has not seen), community tradition (ear has not heard), or speculative intuition (heart has not conceived)(Garland). We “have received…the Spirit who is from God, what we might understand the things freely given us by God” (verse 12). # Conclusion The rulers of this age who ignore the crucifixion *and resurrection* of the Lord of glory will know the power of God, but they will know it as their own foolishness undoes them. The terminal move changed everything. “Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o'er His foes”! Christ is our wisdom from God, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption and *boast*! ---------- ## Charge Do not waste a worry on the opinions or hostilities of the men of this age. Their success is as likely to cohere as a used Easter egg sticker. Do not fear the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places, God's own purpose is to show off His wisdom to them through the church. Serve the risen Lord with gladness. Be wise as to what is good. Overcome evil with good, in the power of the risen Savior. ## Benediction: > The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Romans 16:20, ESV)

We cover Aslan's death and resurrection at the Stone Table, and the significance of Lewis' views on the atonement. The book concludes with the coronation of Peter the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just, and Lucy the Valiant at Cair Paravel, and then the hunting of the White Stag resulting in the Pevensies returning through the Wardrobe to England. Along the way we go down the rabbit hole on duty, honor, courage, and what it means to be a man. At last, Peter, Susan, and Lucy arrive with the Beavers to the Stone Table where Aslan, in all of his regal majesty, appears for the first time in the story. Yet, for all of the joy and overwhelming awe the children experience in meeting him, the twin visions of the Stone Table and Cair Paravel remind them (and the reader) of the great challenges to come: that the path to redemption and rule comes at a very great cost.

Resurrection - What Does It Mean? In C.S. Lewis' famous book "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" the lion Aslan offers himself as a willing sacrifice in the place of Edmund, the child who betrayed Aslan's army, and his own family.  The White Witch humiliates and kills Aslan, his body on display on the Stone Table of the Law that called for his death. But as morning dawns the children discover Aslan's body is gone and, more happily, he is even alive! They are overcome with joy at seeing him; but when they are a little calmer, the elder sister stops and thinks and asks... "But what does it all mean?" This is the most important question we can ever ask at Easter. Something incredible has happened - something mysterious and terrible and wonderful, something that has never happened before or will again... But wait - what does it all mean?

In this final podcast on the Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe we look at the deep theology behind the breaking of the Stone Table and the return of Aslan. What does it mean that the law was written on Stone Tablets? It turns out this supposed children's story by C.S. Lewis gives us profound insight into the atonement. We look at Luke 2:10-11,1Titus 2:5-6,Hebrews 9:15,Hebrews 12:2 and find that the Chronicles of Narnia declare "He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant." Joy to the world - the Lord has come - let Earth receive her King!
