For decades Frank X Walker has reclaimed essential American lives through his pathbreaking historical poetry. In this stirring new collection, he reimagines the experiences of Black Civil War soldiers—including his own ancestors—who enlisted in the Union army in exchange for emancipation.Moving chronologically from antebellum Kentucky through Reconstruction, Walker braids the voices of the United States Colored Troops with their family members, as well as slave owners and prominent historical figures from Abraham Lincoln to Frederick Douglas and Margaret Garner. Imbued with atmospheric imagery, these persona poems and more “[clarify] not only the inextricable value of Black life and labor to the building of America, but the terrible price they were forced to pay in producing that labor” (Khadijah Queen). “How do you un-orphan a people?” Walker asks. “How do you pick up / shattered black porcelain and make / a new set of dishes fit to eat off?”While carefully attuned to the heartbreak and horrors of war, Walker's poems pay equal care to the pride, perseverance, and triumphs of their speakers. Evoking the formerly enslaved General Charles Young, Walker hums: “I am America's promise, my mother's song, / and the reason my father had every right to dream.” Expansive and intimate, Load in Nine Times is a resounding ode to the powerful ties of individual and cultural ancestry by an indelible voice in American poetry. Winner of the 2025 PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. A native of Danville, Kentucky, Frank X Walker is the first African American writer to be named Kentucky Poet Laureate. Walker has published thirteen collections of poetry, including Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers, which was awarded the 2014 NAACP Image Award for Poetry and the Black Caucus American Library Association Honor Award for Poetry. Voted one of the most creative professors in the south, Walker coined the term “Affrilachia” and co-founded the Affrilachian Poets Collective, the oldest continuously running predominantly African American writing group in the country. He is a Professor of English, and Director of the MFA in Creative Writing program the University of Kentucky. Podcast Notes Episode 465 Creating Space for Awareness Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: May 15, 2025 In this episode of the Coach Approach Ministries podcast, Brian Miller and Chad Hall dive deep into the core coaching competency of evoking awareness. They explore how the International Coaching Federation reframed this concept to shift the focus away from simply asking questions and toward generating new insight and understanding for clients. The conversation includes practical strategies, mindset shifts, and real-world examples to help coaches foster meaningful breakthroughs. Key Highlights The Evolution of a Core Competency: The ICF shifted from emphasizing “powerful questioning” to “evoking awareness,” highlighting that questions are just one of many tools to spark insight. The Role of Deep Listening: Evoking awareness begins with truly listening — not just to words, but to tone, patterns, and what's left unsaid — with a deep sense of curiosity. Avoiding Entrenchment: Coaches should be careful not to challenge clients in ways that provoke defensiveness; gentle observations or reframing can lead to more open exploration. Multiple Paths to Awareness: Beyond questions, awareness can be evoked through metaphors, observations, reframing, or offering models and distinctions (like the “3 Ps” for leadership issues). Shifting the Coaching Mindset: Tools like the hourglass model are not instructions for the coach but frameworks to understand and support the client's thought journey. Takeaways Awareness is the goal, not the question itself — be flexible in your approach. Curiosity is foundational: great coaches listen beyond the surface. Evoking awareness means meeting the client where they are, even if that's uncertainty or resistance. Effective coaching requires patience — allow clients the space to discover rather than forcing insights. The cultural historian Tiffany Jenkins looks at the long history of the private life from Ancient Athens to the digital age. In her new book, Strangers and Intimates: The Rise and fall of the Private Life, she examines how our attitudes to the intimate and personal, have shifted over time. She argues that the challenge of big tech is simply the latest development that has seen our private lives increasingly exposed for public consumption. It is only through understanding the history of the very idea of the private life, that we might protect it. Homework: A Memoir is Geoff Dyer's new book. In it he tells his own story, that of a boy growing up in a working class family in the 1960s and 1970s. He charts the transformative opportunities afforded by the post war settlement for an eleven year old boy who wins a place at a grammar school. Evoking deep personal memories, he explores the challenges of his childhood and teenage years in the mid twentieth century England. Lanre Bakare is interested in the stories of the Black Britain we don't often hear – the one that exists beyond London. In moving his focus outside the capital, he explores the economic and social unrest of 1970s and 1980s from very different perspectives. His new book, We Were There: How Black Culture, Resistance and Community Shaped Modern Britain suggests that we need to incorporate a broader range of the experiences of Black Britons into the fabric of our national story.Producer: Ruth Watts
Ep. 179 (Part 1 of 2) | In this podcast, John Prendergast, spiritual teacher, depth psychotherapist (retired), and prolific author, eloquently lays out the territory we encounter on the spiritual path as we move towards opening to our deepest ground. John defines deepest ground as “ungraspable and unfathomable, something we can know intimately as a quality of awareness, unbounded and open.” “When we touch into this,” he continues, “we move from a place of love, peace and groundedness.” In working with students and clients over four decades, John says the presence or absence of ground has been the most important theme. John has a gift for communicating exactly what is most useful for a spiritual practitioner to hear: taking an integral and nondual approach different from traditional psychotherapy, he invites us to evoke presence—welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation—let go of ordinary knowledge and allow a translucent, transformative space to emerge around ordinary mind. Blending archetypal wisdom and guidance with spacious emptiness, John explains that opening to unbounded awareness supports the process of individuation and actualization; he also weaves in an intriguing version of the hero's journey, where the hero emerges from the underground, not as a figure of accomplishment and victory, but as a simple, humble being, void of ego. The rich wisdom and gentle guidance offered here is invaluable, worthy of listening to many a time. Recorded November 7, 2024.“Transcendence is a beautiful first step… but there's a very important process of embodying awareness more and more deeply, in the physical body, in the subtle body.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing John Prendergast, Ph.D., retired psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and author, whose most recent book is Your Deepest Ground (00:57)What is our deepest ground? (01:55)What is the difference between presence and ground? (04:29)The fear of losing control, of annihilation, that comes up in the process of healing and awakening (06:47)Using the myth of the underground descent, but emerging not as a hero, but simple and humble—devoid of egoic will (09:29)A translucency of the body/mind emerges: a core illumination (13:18)Meditation, self-inquiry, and time with authentic teachers are what have brought John to luminosity (15:09)The connection to one's teacher: for John, this was Jean Klein and Adyashanti (16:25)Back to returning to the world—not as a hero, but where there's no sense of accomplishment and hierarchy disappears (17:55)The tyranny of the enlightenment drive (20:42)Willfulness gradually transforms into willingness (24:07)Individual guidance can come as the small, still voice but also in kinesthetic form (25:25)Are there specific practices that facilitate opening to our deepest ground? (27:24)Evoking presence: John leads an invitation to welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation (29:14)The difference between John's work and traditional psychotherapy (31:31)Beyond welcoming, John teaches a self-inquiry practice that asks, “Do I really want to know what is true?” (36:15) Working not just on personal limiting beliefs but existential limiting beliefs—e.g., “I am a separate self” (39:19)Recognizing the limitation of rational thought, a transformative space emerges around ordinary mind...
Evoking reflections on character development, scriptural interpretations, and personal faith insights, this episode explores Jesus' narrative within its historical and spiritual context. Ben and Laura discuss the show's imaginative takes on biblical characters and events, particularly focusing on the potent depiction of Jesus overturning tables in the temple. The series illuminates Jesus' righteous anger and controlled intensity, enriching viewers' understanding of his mission. They commend "The Chosen" for its ability to humanize often one-dimensional biblical figures like Thomas, giving them a broader narrative that extends beyond their defining scriptural moments. Their conversation touches on the show's effective portrayal of biblical history, particularly concerning themes like sacrifice and religious customs at the temple. This episode exemplifies how creative storytelling intersects with scriptural truth, producing a compelling drama that resonates with contemporary audiences. #93Evoking the King in menRelationships are our greatest initiation – a mirror of our deepest fears and highest potential. As women, we hold the power to shape their direction, not through force, but by embodying our worth. When we stop clinging to a man's potential and instead anchor in our own truth, we become the invitation for him to rise. In this episode, I share my own journey – from misusing my ability to "see" a man's divinity to learning the sacred balance of needing love while releasing attachment. I reveal why masculine provision matters (yes, I'm experimenting with a week of full surrender to receiving) and how true union begins when we stop betraying ourselves. If you're ready to stop repeating cycles and awaken the codes of sacred partnership within you, this is your call. The path begins where you stand—in radical honesty, softness, and the courage to deserve what you truly desire.Join Sanctuary: https://sofiasundari.com/sanctuaryTake Feminine Archetypes Quiz: https://sofiasundari.com/quizMy free Telegram channel: https://t.me/sofiasundariBecoming Her: https://sofiasundari.com/becoming-herTimestamps01:25 - The Trouble and Power of Relationships08:25 - How Women Evoke the Highest in Men16:00 - A Woman's Role in Directing Love18:10 - The Trap of Comparison18:55 - The Provision Experiment30:20 - Biology and Energetic Design40:00 - The Paradox: Need vs. Detachment46:30 - Invitation to Sacred Union Work51:20 - Closing: Awakening Through Love
We inaugurate the brilliant Taiwanese master Edward Yang with a conversation about his transcendent 1994 social satire A Confucian Confusion. Following up his staggering masterwork A Brighter Summer Day, Yang turned his attention to Taipei in the 1990s at the height of its rapid evolution into a port city of global capital and the effects this shift had on the value systems and relational dynamics of the city's people. Evoking the slapstick and breackneck pacing of more popular modes of cinema - including the American romantic comedy - the film follows a large ensemble of Taipei's young professionals caught up in the frenzy of capitalism's mechanisms of social order, all in pursuit of an irresolute alternative that can liberate them from their self-made misery and help them achieve something approaching an honest, authentic way of life. We begin with a conversation about Yang as artist, his preoccupations, his distinct convergence of heart and wit. Then, we break down A Confucian Confusion's ensemble, how the characters reflect Yang's feelings about Taipei's consumer-friendly, corporatized status, and how honest desire is sublimated into the cold calculus of business language - a phenomenon that presages and predicts modern tech culture and its bastardized language of wellness and attunement. Finally, we discuss the film's unique and delicate balance of trenchant political satire and touching character drama; how Yang achieves a profound and honest reflection of the minor victories and acts of liberation we can achieve within a totalizing capitalist milieu. The practice of Yoga Nidra unfolds in stages:1. The first stage consists of moving awareness from part to part of the physical body, called body rotation. 2. The next stage is usually based on breath awareness, which involves using our awareness to observe the breath, which is a subtler part of us. 3. Then, we move to an even subtler level with meditations on sensations, feelings, and emotions, which begin to work directly with the mind. We are asked to feel warm, cold, heavy, light, pleasant, and unpleasant feelings.4. The last stage is often a form of visualization. However, the order can be adjusted according to the purpose of the practice so that feeling meditations can come straight after body rotation when feeling is the main focus. This might occur when we really want to develop the skill of creating and destroying feelings so that we have more choices over which feelings we have. Because emotional feelings have such a powerful impact on us, the ability to remain grounded, aware, and centered while facing challenging situations requires practice. It is best to start this process by meditating on contrasting sensations, both pleasant and unpleasant, and then moving on to pleasant and unpleasant emotions. The systematic exploration of contrasting physical sensations, such as hot and cold, heavy and light, and contrasting emotions in Yoga Nidra serves several important purposes in promoting relaxation and emotional well-being. We are learning to safely experience the full spectrum of feelings without being overwhelmed.
Send us a textIn this episode of The Conscious Classroom, Amy Edelstein questions the use of the popular idiom "returning to analog." Evoking thoughts of tribal gatherings and mystical experiences of the past and future, Berlin based artist, Refracted taps into his ritualistic side through his latest release titled, ‘In Veil'. Forth-coming on the London imprint Titrate, the release spans six tracks that seem to stretch time and space, enveloping the listener in field recording and drone driven journeys. Initiation brings forth an atmosphere of introspection as subdued bongos start and a steady drone fills the air. The energy turned inwards, the thoughts of a listener calm, meditative tones and melodies play throughout. Giving space and warmth as field recorded textures swirl amidst the musical backdrop. Initiation and the remainder of Refracted's ‘In Veil' release will be out on the 25th of January. @refracted-music @titraterecords www.instagram.com/refractedmusic/ www.instagram.com/titraterecords/ Write up by @huedj Follow us on social media: @itsdelayed linktr.ee/delayed info@delayed.nyc www.delayed.nyc www.facebook.com/itsdelayed www.instagram.com/_____delayed www.youtube.com/@_____delayed

The prosecutor at the Eichmann trial, Gideon Hausner, opened the trial with a speech to history. Evoking the memory of the Holocaust victims, and referring to them as the true accusers of Adolf Eichmann at the trial. With that speech both the dramatic atmosphere as well as the overall theme, were set for the entire ensuing trial. The over 100 witnesses took the stand not only to implicate Eichmann for his role in the Final Solution, but also to tell the world, the Jewish People and Israeli society what the Holocaust was all about. Through the often dramatic moments of witness testimony over the course of the trial, the broad scope of the Holocaust narrative was finally confronted. A clear before and after the trial was delineated in the collective memory of the Jewish People and the world at large regarding the history and memory of the Holocaust. This Is the Time, in Our Fear-Evoking Events, that Jesus Followers, Like Jesus and King Hezekiah, Need to Get Alone with God and Pray MESSAGE SUMMARY: Immediately, Jesus made His Disciples get in a boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side while Jesus dismissed the crowd. After Jesus dismissed the crowd, He went up on a mountainside, by Himself, to pray. He was alone with His Father. In Mark 1:35, Jesus' prayer life is presented: “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed.”. If there is one Christian discipline that is neglected by Christians of today, it is the practice of getting alone with God and having a quiet time to pray -- not you and your computer; not you and a friend; but only you and God alone in your prayer. We can learn a great deal from King Hezekiah, in Isaiah 37:15-17a about his personal relationship with God, through personal prayer, as he is faced with a powerful invasion of Israel: “And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: ‘O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear.'”. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, in order to be with you, I need you to show me how to “create a desert” in the midst of my full, active life. Cleanse me from the pressures, illusions, and pretenses that confront me today so that my life may serve as a gift to those around me. Amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 26). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Self-Centeredness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Love. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): John 17:1-5; Matthew 26:36-40; Isaiah 37:14-17; Psalms 100:1-5. Emma Driver, a burgeoning queer artist and cancer survivor, released her powerful new single, "Try Hard," on September 4th. This first release marks a significant step in her healing journey, transforming insecurities into acceptance and aiming to serve as a guiding light for others facing similar struggles. "What a nightmare to be perceived" are lyrics Emma penned in 2021 before her cancer diagnosis. However, these words resonated more deeply as she lost her hair to chemotherapy and became unrecognizable even to herself. Confronting mortality at 27, she found solace in her music once again, transforming fears and shame into art that eased her pain and revealed an undiscovered strength. Emerging from treatment in remission nearly three years after her last release under a different name, Emma felt a rapacious urgency to release music. Returning to New York City, she collaborated with the renowned production duo SUPR8, known for their work with Lolo Zouai, Bradley Simpson, and Princess Nokia. This collaboration resulted in her upcoming four-song EP, "Ashamed To Admit This." "Try Hard" is an anthemic testimony for those who have forsaken happiness in pursuit of acceptance. Evoking the teen angst of Avril Lavigne and Olivia Rodrigo, coupled with a mature, alternative sound that acknowledges the desire to be the "cool kid" while delivering the realization that weighing others' opinions too dearly is a barrier to personal growth. In this episode, we explore the significance of understanding your audience. Mike DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender, emphasizes the importance of creating content that respects and enlightens the audience, rather than just entertaining them. We delve into Mike's career journey from his art school days to his innovative work in animation and his venture into novel writing. DiMartino shares the creative process behind his novel Both Here and Gone, offering profound insights on grief and loss through a young protagonist's story. We also touch upon the necessity of having creative guardrails to channel artistic efforts effectively, rather than absolute freedom, and discuss the impact of evoking genuine emotions rather than provoking reactions in the audience.Key Learnings:1. Audience Focus: Keeping a specific, real-life audience in mind, like Stephen King did with Tabitha, can ground and humanize creative work.2. Respecting the Audience: Creating content that respects the intelligence and emotional depth of the audience leads to more impactful and memorable art.3. Creative Guardrails: Constraints and clear direction can enhance creativity by providing focus and a framework within which to innovate.4. Evoking vs Provoking: Authentic creative expression aims to evoke deep, lasting emotions rather than provokes temporary reactions.5. Continual Learning: Even seasoned creators like Mike DiMartino continue to study and refine their craft, demonstrating the importance of lifelong learning.Get full interviews and daily episodes in the Daily Creative app at DailyCreative.app.Mentioned in this episode:NEW BOOK! Ava is the bestselling YA author of LOVE LETTERS FROM THE DEAD; EXPOSURE is her adult fiction debut. Tracing themes of race, art, ambition, new motherhood, and grief–told through multiple perspectives and spanning decades–EXPOSURE is a powerful story about conflicting truths. Beautifully crafted and told with tender empathy, this novel is not one to miss.In Ava's own words: "I hope this book inspires empathy; I hope it will inspire people to look at the other side of a story, see someone who is different than they are, or someone on the opposing side of an issue. While there are certainly monsters among us, I believe that most people are not black and white–that we are complex, nuanced, flawed, human."EXPOSURE evokes deep conversation and reflection, and I think in this cultural climate, your audience would really enjoy a conversation that explores empathy for two opposing sides of a divide.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Festival Season is the best time for us to revisit our Conversation with Melanie Jones, an art curator, Disney enthusiast, and Owner of Chapter Three Art and Disney Festival of the Arts expert, as they discuss this week's topic: “Festivals and Art Need to Be Emotion-Evoking Experiences.” In this episode of the Customer's First Podcast, Melanie shares her passion for art and her journey in forming Chapter Three Art. It all started with her collection of Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, which sparked her admiration for artists and their ability to evoke emotions through their work. Chapter Three Art became a platform for Melanie to introduce others to Disney and other types of art and share stories from fellow collectors. Through this endeavour, Melanie has formed strong relationships with artists and has become an integral part of their creative process. The conversation then delves into the Festival of the Arts, which initially started as the Festival of the Masters and has now blossomed into a month-long event. The Festival offers various activities such as art exhibits, merchandise, food, meeting the artists, live painting, acrobatics, chalk art, drawing classes, and more. Melanie emphasizes the interactive exhibits, including a paint-by-number mural where participants can contribute, sketching classes with Disney artists, live painting performances, and 3D chalk art. They both highlight the need for ample time to experience the Festival fully, as there is so much to see and do. Melanie shares her experiences at the Festival, emphasizing the importance of meeting and conversing with the artists. Viewing the art in person and learning about the artist's inspiration and techniques adds a deeper connection to the artwork. She highlights two artists Tacey is curious about: Michelle St. Laurent, a watercolour artist known for her attention to detail, and Michael Provenza, who utilizes points and filters light through his paintings. Melanie believes attending the Festival allows people to discover new art and artists they may have yet to discover otherwise. Melanie further emphasizes the opportunity to meet new artists and purchase art at the Festival. The ongoing demand for art and the chance to reconnect with pieces from the past make it an exciting experience. They also discuss how the Festival's level of service and experience can translate into other industries, such as hospitality. Melanie shares her dreams of opening Chapter Three Art Cafe, a gallery space offering more than just art. She envisions a relaxing environment where people can enjoy art while sipping coffee or wine, with possible open mic or poetry reading nights. Melanie aims to create an ongoing experience for art enthusiasts rather than a limited-time event like the Festival. The conversation shifts to Melanie's experiences collecting Disney pins and attending pin events. She discusses her collection, which is focused on Beauty and the Beast and currently contains over 900 pins. Melanie expresses excitement for future adventures in the world of art and collecting. Finally, Melanie shares her experiences living in Florida, close to the parks, and the opportunity to visit the Art of Disney at Disney Springs. She plans to interview and write about local and visiting artists throughout the year, further expanding her knowledge and connections in the art world. The episode concludes with a message to the listeners, encouraging them to attend the Festival of the Arts, even if they don't plan on purchasing art, as it offers a chance to learn something new and have a transformative experience. It's time to get curious! In today's episode of Playing in the Sandbox, I'm bringing you a topic from the vault that digs deep into how we ask questions. Instead of seeking to be understood, first, it's important that we seek to understand. If you find yourself asking questions that lead to defensiveness, confusion, or other unexpected responses, this episode is for you. More often than not, people hear questions as accusations. Framing questions from a curious perspective can move our team members out of a defensive mindset. 2. If your work environment is breaking down, examine how others answer the questions you are asking – they will expose their perspective (and their baggage if it exists). 3. Asking powerful questions gets you to the core of who someone is and moves past the facade. 4. If you give “point-and-shoot” instructions to your team, the team may feel demoralized. Try taking a “point-and-ask” approach. 5. Pay attention to cultural differences. For example, if you're an East Coast leader working with a West Coast team, think about how your team members communicate and create space for clarity. 6. It's important to address the pink elephant in the room! If there's something no one wants to discuss, expose the issue and seek to rectify it without blame. In a free-wheeling discussion Scott and Bob and friend and frequent G&R guest Clayton Lust, a professor of history as several Houston-area community colleges, talked about the campus protests of the 1960s, especially at Columbia in 1968, their meaning, their consequences and their tactics. All of us have written and/or taught about U.S. radical protests and the 1960s. We then pivoted to a conversation about today's campus protests against the U.S.-sponsored and -subsidized slaughters in Gaza and the huge impact they've had in shifting public opinion and giving hope in a bleak time. We also talked about the importance of communicating the idea that this is a bipartisan genocide, with Democrats taking the lead, and how the Democrat embrace of cops in 2020 and their rejection at defunding or even reforming police has led to this moment because the police will attack anyone who stands in the way of the ruling class. ----------------------------- Outro- "We Can Be Together" by Jefferson Airplane Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/PcExWRe3) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production.
