In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Mirela Sula. At the age of 16, Mirela found herself in her home country of Albania, engaged to be married. Not because of a teenage romance or a whirlwind courtship, but because of something much darker – the risk of being sold into prostitution. Upon accepting the proposal, Mirela made her fiancé promise that he would allow her to continue her studies. If he didn't, she vowed to disappear from his life. That promise was Mirela's lifeline. She was married by the age of 18, trading her freedom for safety. Mirela lived with a large family in a small village, where there was no money to even discuss. Her role was clear – to wash, to clean, and to serve the family. At the same time, she continued to pursue her education, gaining knowledge, and with that, came confidence and exposure to the world outside. As Mirela progressed in her studies, she began to understand the importance of financial independence and worked aggressively toward it. Mirela is a British journalist, author, and CEO and Founder of Global Woman Magazine and Global Woman Club. She is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of media, education, and women's empowerment. With a dynamic career spanning over two decades, Mirela has left a mark on the world by transformative initiatives and fostering a global community of over 30,000 female founders in her Global Woman platform. Mirela is the owner of five magazines, author of 15 books, leader of 27 club chapters around the world and the organizer of more than 500 events. She has been speaking in more than 300 stages around the world and has reached over 1 million people with her message. Mirela has been honored with awards such as the 'Inspirational Award for Women 2015' for Human Rights, the 'Best Inspirational Influencer' Award from The Best You in 2017, and the Universum Donna Award 2017 from the Universum Academy of Switzerland. “The Businesswoman of the Year Award” from Wealth Dragons in 2019. "The Icon 2023" Award among top celebrities in the UK, and recently she received the “Peace Award” from Universal Peace of Federation on the United Nations International Day of Peace. Mirela is also the organizer of the Global Woman Summit and Global Woman Awards. She has appeared on London Live TV, BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour, Sky TV and has also been featured in the ‘Evening Standard', Forbes Magazine and ‘The Guardian'. Her last self-help book ‘Don't Let Your Mind Go' was a best seller and also published in America and Turkey.

I had the delight of welcoming the brilliant Joy Clarkson, an American author, podcaster, and editor based in the UK. In a world dominated by technological metaphors and a rapid pace of life, she shares wonderful insights, reflections, and inspiration from her latest book "You Are A Tree." Joy joined me on the Gospel Spice podcast for a thought-provoking conversation about the power of metaphors in capturing the intangible aspects of life, finding resilience in times of upheaval, and embracing the poetry of everyday experiences. Joy Clarkson beautifully expounds on the significance of metaphors in illuminating the intangible aspects of life. She draws a compelling comparison to light as a metaphor for wisdom and guidance in her book. She reveals her desire to bring flavor and richness to people's lives, much like salt brings out existing flavors in food. Joy's aspiration for her book is to intensify and flavor life, leaving people in awe of the poetry of life and the deep meaning woven into everyday experiences. Through her work, she encourages readers to slow down, pay attention, and savor the richness of life around them. In our discussion, Joy challenges the paradigm of equating human beings to machines, emphasizing the resilience and complexity of humans. She contrasts the organic nature of humans with the mechanical consistency of machines. Joy artfully weaves these insights into the metaphor of human beings as more akin to organic organisms, specifically comparing them to the resilience and growth of trees. This fresh perspective stands in stark contrast to a culture dominated by machine and computer metaphors, encouraging readers to appreciate their own resilience and organic nature. I must take a moment to praise the beautiful writing of Joy Clarkson and the book's ability to prompt readers to desire and experience the world around them. Drawing on this metaphorical culinary journey, Joy illuminates the significance of the book's title. She reveals her belief that her book has the potential to draw out the existing richness and flavors of life, leaving people with a more profound appreciation for the everyday experiences that God has intricately woven with meaning. In this context, the metaphor of the tree signifies resilience and the potential for growth, guiding readers to embrace their own capacity for resilience, growth, and rootedness. The conversation expands as we explore how Joy managed to write her book during a time of personal upheaval. She vulnerably shares how she embraced resilience and found inspiration during a challenging season of life, highlighting her ability to slow down and pay attention to the richness and meaning in everyday experiences. Choosing to draw strength from her surroundings, she surrendered to the process and found resilience in the form of a metaphorical journey, paralleling the growth and rootedness of a tree. This recounting adds depth to the metaphorical exploration within her book. Joy Clarkson's enlivening conversation on the Gospel Spice podcast beautifully illustrates the power of metaphors in conveying the richness of life and finding resilience in times of upheaval. Through the lens of the metaphorical and organic, readers are invited to slow down, savor life, and appreciate their own resilience. Embracing Joy's poignant insights, we are challenged to see the poetry in our everyday experiences and to draw inspiration from the resilience and growth of the trees that surround us, witnessing the beauty of our own metaphorical journey. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
God did not bring you this far to leave you right where you are. Just believe and trust.
In this episode, Linda Strader and I talk about her being a woman pioneering the field of Forest Service fire fighting and her experience being one of the first women in a career that had previously been only for men. Linda shares her love for her career that ended way sooner than she had wanted and how she had to pivot in her thinking of how she would earn a living, keep her house, and bring a service to others that she had not considered before. Originally from Syracuse, New York, Linda Strader moved to Prescott, Arizona with her family in 1972. In 1976, she became one of the first women hired on a U.S. Forest Service fire crew. Summers of Fire: A Memoir of Adventure, Love and Courage, was released on May 1st, 2018 by Bedazzled Ink Publishing. The prequel to Summers of Fire, Uprooted: A New Life In The Arizona Sun, was released by Bedazzled Ink Publishing on December 1st, 2021. Linda holds two degrees: a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, and a Master's in Planning from the University of Arizona. In addition to writing, she is a landscape architect, certified arborist, and watercolor artist. She currently lives in the same area where her Forest Service career began. Stay the Course and Press On This is the year. Embrace the journey and get your mindset right! We started our year with a new puppy. I had forgotten how hard potty training was as an amputee. What does that mean, you might ask? Night time wake up calls are very difficult when you don't have a leg on, grabbing an energetic puppy, and crutching outside and down a step...all before that puppy has an accident! This week, I am navigating this alone for the first time, tonight I may just leave my leg on. I tell you all this to show you the reality of being an amputee. As I sit here and write this up I am working later than usual, because of said puppy, and her boundless amount of energy she's had all day. She is finally asleep and I have a moment to finish up my post. THIS is life. This is part of the journey. The good times, the hard times, the moments that make me smile and the times that exhaust me and make me see my shortcomings as an amputee. Would I change a thing? Would I do it differently? NO! I am a stronger person for what I've gone through. I know myself even better than I ever have. My faith is stronger than ever before, and the people and experiences I have met and had along this journey I wouldn't trade for anything. Mindset matters. I keep saying that. How we see ourselves, and our lives, DOES matter. When we let go of our past, embrace our situation, learn to ride the ups and downs of life, that is when we can truly live a full and meaningful life. That is when you can find purpose and joy. Don't give up when it gets rough. Keep fighting the good fight. You can do it, you are strong enough. This week, focus on the positive. Find your purpose by setting goals you can achieve, and that challenge you just enough. Create a list of the things you've been dreaming of doing, trying, or accomplishing. Write them down then create timelines of when you want to try or accomplish them. Be specific so they don't fade away. Next, figure out what steps you'll need to take to get to your goal. Use the next week to get your list together and your mindset right, and go out and kick butt! You've got this, Warrior! And as always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!! Much love,
There is deep messaging in our world that happiness is somewhere off in the future. "I'll be happy when...". While setting goals and working towards things we want to create can be deeply powerful, the journey that we take to get there can often get lost in the mix. In this episode, Bryan talks to Dr. Anastasia Ristau about the idea that life is a journey that we are all on, not a destination that we arrive at. They discuss being open to the detours along the way in life, connecting to the subtle nature of the present moment, showing up before we are ready, and much more. Dr. Ristau is a licensed psychologist and the Director of Psychotherapeutics at PrairieCare. As always - take what serves you, and leave the rest. (This podcast is not meant to replace therapy. If you feel you need it, we encourage you to reach out to a licensed mental health professional)

Lockdown. Working from home. A cross-country move. Better together. It's about relationships. Family first.
In this episode, Penny Orloff and I will discuss her life journey as a performing artist who at a young age had been told that if she followed her dreams, she would be alone and penniless. At the age of 60 she found herself homeless and living on her friend's couch when she was asked a pivotal question… What's wrong with money? Penny now has a portfolio worth over 7 figures! Penny Orloff is a professional Life Coach and Fairy Godmother. A Tarot reader for over 50 years, Penny has used the cards in her counseling practice for decades. For ten years she was the Art Therapist at a residential drug and alcohol rehab facility in Malibu. She is the author of "Art as Lifework, Life as Artwork," a creativity seminar and workbook that has been offered nation-wide since 1991; and is currently at work on her new book, "Who Would You Be If You Had Nothing to Bitch About?" Her personal development system, "Wishful Thinking," synthesizes the human proclivity for magic and symbol with practical steps to the manifestation of your highest good and greatest happiness. Penny was a working actor and dancer in Los Angeles when a Juilliard scholarship took her to New York. She sang more than 20 Principal Soprano roles for New York City Opera, and played featured roles on Broadway under such directors as Harold Prince and Joseph Papp. Theater, concert, and opera engagements took her all over the US, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Her first solo show, “JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY" (based on her best-selling novel of the same name, available at Amazon.com), toured the US for a decade, including a successful run off-Broadway in 2005. She is currently touring in her latest show, “SONGS AND STORIES FROM A NOT-QUITE-KOSHER LIFE.” She is a regular contributor of stories to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books and has worked for more than a decade as an arts journalist for various online and print outlets. Having outlived most of her early competition for film roles, since 2011 she has enjoyed acting in a range of interesting shorts, Indie, and feature films - silver-white hair and a Botox-free face being in short supply in LA. I have friends and know people who have worked all their lives towards retirement. They've invested and saved their resources. They've spent years planning to take that trip to the Grand Canyon, take the cruise around the world, backpack through Europe, and go scuba diving in the Grand Cayman only to retire after 40 years and fall into a routine that left them uninspired. In some cases, they passed away months later. I know that sounds dark, but that's the reality for many people. Life is a journey. We've been programmed to give the best part of our youth to "Building the American Dream," acquiring things, stuff, and everything that doesn't mean two squats at the end. In some cases, we neglect our families, stay leveraged up to our eyeballs in debt, write our dreams down in a book, and put our "someday" list on a shelf to collect dust. This episode is a reminder that you have the ability to deprogram yourself from everything you've been taught and conditioned to believe. Have you started working on your dream yet? Are you doing what you love to do every single day? Remove the excuses and find a way to make it happen. You've been blessed with the same level of creativity to make it happen, and at this point in human history, you have all the tools to materialize it. Have you taken that trip you've wanted to take for the last 5 years? Why not? There are pitstops along the way in life and it's by design. Sometimes, it's an illness that puts you down for a bit. An unexpected job change forces you out of your hypnotic patterns. A child graduates and leaves the nest. Divorce. Loss of assets. And a multitude of other things that could happen over the course of your lifetime. While you're here, you may as well enjoy it. Have fun with it. You know what, Energizers? Life is a journey. That's right. Life is a journey. Just like as if you're trying to climb a mountain. We start at the head of the trail, and we work our way up and down and up and down and around until we get to that summit.
You have to stop that comparison, most people are living fake lives on social media. We are in a world where everyone has dreams and aspirations. Everyone wishes to succeed, be seen, and hear. Some dream big so they could be of help to others, some dream big so they could enjoy a happy life with their family, some so they could flirt and enjoy their social life at the peak level, while others still do it so their friends and colleagues could see they have made it. One common error many people make in life regarding this is that the accomplishments of others make them feel bad about themselves. Social media is curated, and comparing the real lives that we work so hard on sounds very unfair to me because, at the end of the day, no one knows what people are going through behind the screens. When we look at our past, we see failures. When we look toward our future, we feel fear. But God is telling us to change our perspective. When we look at our past, we should see the wonders he's done in our lives. When we look toward our future, we should feel HOPE.
This week we talk about not wanting our youngest to sleepover at other people's houses. We don't know the parents! She doesn't have a voice. You have to have the words and communication to be able to say "I want to leave". If you think it's uncomfortable talking about people not touching them, try if it happens. Don't be fearful. It's about educating and empowering our kids!Want our podcasts sent straight to your phone?
