This edition of the College Faith podcast welcomes Dr. Robbie Castleman, emeritus professor of Biblical Studies at John Brown University. She has studied, ministered to students, and taught at a number of very different types of schools. As a result, she is a helpful guide to understanding the similarities and differences between different types of colleges and universities. In this podcast we discuss: The fundamental importance of considering who will be your professors The importance of the core curriculum in finding what you are most interested in majoring in When it might be best to transfer to another university to finish your degree Why you should look for schools that encourage professors to "push" you What to look for in professors beyond their understanding of the subject matter How to do research on professors to find the best ones Other very important but non-academic considerations when choosing a college Surprising insights into financial aid, including at private, faith-based institutions, and how to access these funds (illustrated by her personal success in financing almost all her education) Differences she noticed when attending a public university for her masters degree The benefits she sees of studying at an explicitly Christian school (her answer may surprise you--often the opposite of what we hear!) The unique challenges of various types of colleges and universities The necessity of finding good fellowship with other believers while a student How she dealt with isolation and loneliness at one college she attended Resources mentioned during our conversation: Words of Wisdom from a Christian Professor at a Public University -- Ken Elzinga on College Faith The Every Campus Coalition -- a College Faith Interview How Christian Study Centers Minister to Students -- a College Faith Interview How The Navigators Minister to Students -- a College Faith Interview How CRU Minister to Students -- a College Faith Interview How InterVarsity/USA Minister to Students -- a College Faith Interview Robbie Castleman, True Love in a World of False Hope: Sex, Romance, & Real People Robbie Castleman, New Testament Essentials: Father, Son, Spirit and Kingdom (Various authors), Rest of Essentials book set Robbie Castleman, Interpreting the God-Breathed Word: How to Read and Study the Bible

Welcome to the Marriage Talk Podcast - Ep 154 - Greg and Erin Smalley - A Special Conversation at Grand Hotel During the October "Celebrate Your Marriage Conference" at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, our keynote speakers were Greg and Erin Smalley from Focus on the Family. What a pleasure it was to sit down with them for an extended conversation about marriage, relationship repair, and so much more! Dr. Greg Smalley serves as the vice president of Marriage and Family Formation at Focus on the Family. In this role, he develops and oversees initiatives that prepare individuals for marriage, strengthen and nurture existing marriages and help couples in marital crises. Prior to joining Focus, Smalley worked for the Center for Relationship Enrichment at John Brown University and as president of the National Institute of Marriage. He is the author of 17 books including “Fight Your Way to a Better Marriage,” “The DNA of Parent and Teen Relationships” and “The Whole-Hearted Marriage.” He and his wife, Erin, co-created “Ready to Wed,” a complete premarital curriculum for engaged couples and the online Focus on Marriage Assessment. They also released “Crazy Little Thing Called Marriage: 12 Secrets to a Lifelong Romance” in 2016. Smalley's passion for marriage began as a young boy. He is the son of the late Dr. Gary Smalley, a family counselor, president and founder of the Smalley Relationship Center and author of 40 books on marriage. Smalley regularly attended his father's conferences and absorbed the importance of marriage. He frequently had people come up to him at events and say, “Your dad saved my marriage.” Smalley knew early in his career that he wanted to be more hands-on in helping couples. After receiving his doctorate at the Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University in Southern California and a counseling degree from Denver Seminary, he and Erin led intensive marriage seminars around the world and trained pastors, professionals and lay leaders on how to effectively work with married and engaged couples. Married since 1992, Greg and Erin live in Colorado with their three daughters, Taylor, Murphy and Annie, and their son, Garrison. Smalley brings at least one child to every age-appropriate event, exposing them to the crucial role marriage plays in the family and society. The Smalleys – who with help overcame their own struggles early on – make a point to study a marriage book together every Christmas. ------------- CLICK HERE for more information on the ministry and marriage events hosted by Jay and Laura Laffoon CLICK HERE for more information on Bill Hobson and the Hobson Media Podcast Network Have a question, comment, suggestion for Marriage Talk? It's not news to say that marriages are struggling. Statistics show that 50% of first marriages will end in divorce (in and outside the church) and second marriages have an even greater chance of ending in divorce. Erin Shaw is a painter of borderlands, the spaces between worlds. As a visual storyteller, the child of an Oklahoma farm, Shaw tills the rich soil of dichotomy through her masterful uses of color, iconography, and story. As a Chickasaw-Choctaw artist, she creates in a state of tension, suspended between two worlds where both solemnity and humor pervade her art. She finds that truths are revealed in unanticipated ways, and trickster often appears throughout her work. The artist earned her BFA in studio art from Baylor University and her MFA from the University of Oklahoma. She is Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR, an international speaker, and a featured artist in Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art, among other exhibits in the U.S.

The grandson of a British missionary in Zambia, David Kamwana, was inspired to invent and engineer by his grandfather's workshop. He had the tools to do everything at the workshop - from fixing his car to wiring his house. After graduating from John Brown University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering, David noticed how many students were crippled by debt but still lacked the skills to take on more than an entry-level job. He also noticed that job descriptions often fail to truly represent the requirements of a position. After several years as a Corporate Engineer, David co-founded OneCrate with the vision of streamlining the job search process for businesses and job seekers. Phase one is to build a digitized database of job descriptions and resumes to allow AI algorithms to help with job matching. Phase two is to use the growing database to help businesses, students, job seekers, and educators map out clear career paths using real and relevant data. Key takeaways: Most resumes and job descriptions are created in Word documents or PDFs and, except when and where actively posted, are out of the market and out of the flow. It's only when a candidate actively looks for a job, and a company posts the job description that they might match up. There could be an outstanding candidate ready and interested but not visible to a company because the candidate has not seen the job posting. OneCrate looks to bridge that gap. Job boards like Indeed have started the process and provide more aim. However, there are still a lot of details on both resumes and job descriptions that are not formatted in an AI-friendly way. OneCrate improves the process with smart digital resumes and totally digitized job descriptions. Eventually, this digitized data will facilitate interesting predictive models that can help businesses, job seekers, and students making choices about their career paths. Just improving job matching is a significant step forward, but the future potential of digitizing this data is to streamline the education and training processes so that students step into the workforce with the precise skills and abilities needed by the companies who hire them. Companies who use OneCrate have access to a relevant, easy-to-update org chart that can be viewed and updated. Employees can contribute to their job descriptions, helping them be more accurate and robust. Quote of the show: (15:08) “Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, they already have internship programs that allow you to join their programs out of high school and get into a position that could pay you a quarter of a million dollars a year. They already have that. So we already know that it's possible. So imagine going down that, that path and ask that person, how much did you spend to, to get the skills that you have that are getting you paid quarter million dollars a year? And then you, you know, Compare that with somebody who goes to a four-year computer science program learns a whole bunch of different things and spends $150,000+ to get through the program and then has to start from the bottom and probably still has to be trained by the company that they're gonna work for.” Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-kamwana/ Company Website: https://www.onecrate.com/ Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/eccda84d-4d5b-4c52-ba54-7fd8af3cbe87/disruption-interruption Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/disruption-interruption/id1581985755 Google Play - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub21ueWNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2QvcGxheWxpc3QvODE5NjRmY2EtYTQ5OC00NTAyLThjZjktYWI3YzAwMmRiZTM2LzNiZTZiNzJhLWEzODItNDhhNS04MDc5LWFmYTAwMTI2M2FiNi9kZDYzMGE4Mi04ZGI4LTQyMGUtOGNmYi1hZmEwMDEyNjNhZDkvcG9kY2FzdC5yc3M= Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6yGSwcSp8J354awJkCmJlD Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/disruption-interruption YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf2zbLqmHtSHQ7u1V-Is8cA See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode we begin our journey to understand the cross between a Ken doll and a Labradoodle that is Joel Osteen by going back a generation to see where he comes from.Beginning in 1939 with his father John Osteen. We follow John's progress through a bachelor's degree at John Brown University and a Master's thesis at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. His success as a young Southern Baptist pastor in and around his home state of Texas. Marriage to second wife Dodie and 5 children. Prepare to marvel at John's ability to pray away daughter, Lisa Osteen's alleged Cerebral Palsy and brain damage. You will be gripped by John's dramatic struggle with the Baptist church and the establishments refusal to believe we still live in a time of miracles. They're just less impressive miracles that's all. Have your heart ripped out as a disillusioned John Osteen quits pastoring to a bunch of stiff necked red necks and becomes an insurance salesman. But don't worry, in less than a year of having a real job John comes back to the church, but this time it's personal. We take off with John as he launches what will become the 16 000 seater MEGACHURCH we know today, Lakewood Church in Houston. In John's new and improved Chri$tianity, healing the sick and the miracle of speaking in tongues will occur on the weekly. While I would argue every episode I do about a Prosperity Gospel preacher is a true crime episode, this one actually has some genuine #TrueCrime.A Texas businessman is shot 6 times in an orgy with two sex workers that goes horribly wrong. You may be surprised to learn how father of the version of charismatic Chri$tianity we suffer today, William Branham and John Osteen cross paths with trans woman Leslie Elaine Perez. This episode has got it all. There's a last minute death row reprieve. Marriage advice from a sheltered Chri$tian woman who was married for less than a year when she was 22. The devil will even give Dodie terminal cancer! Don't worry, she cures herself and will explain how you can do the same. And just when you didn't think the life of a preacher couldn't get any more exciting we have pipe bombs and domestic terrorism.Oh and in part one of this two part story we will actually get to some of Joel's story and document his first foray into his father' ministry.

The role as a CBO is the same, but there are differences for her because of the focus of the university. “Faculty and staff are expected to integrate faith into every aspect of their teaching.” She goes on to say that each individual may think differently and integrate it differently, but from a budget perspective, they still need to make room for all of it.
