As the heat of summer rises on Rodeo Drive, how better to stay cool and chic than in the most versatile, enduring and fluid garment of all time –– the Caftan! So says the man with more than thirty of them, Cameron Silver, author of the new book Caftans: From Classical to Camp.Silver talks with Rodeo Drive - The Podcast host Lyn Winter about the history, design and appeal of the caftan, which he says is the most universal and ancient garment in the world. “It is this wonderful garment of comfort that's size inclusive, that's gender fluid, that can be modest or sexy. It can be voluminous or follow the lines of the body, it can be luxurious, or very accessible.”He points out that the caftan, essentially a square of fabric with holes for the head and arms, kept plain or highly ornamental, has been worn by Jesus, Moses, Muhammad and Buddha. “It is this cultural garment of incredible reverence in Morocco,” says Silver; it was worn with high camp by the singer Demis Roussos and extraordinary grace by Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and numerous other celebrities. It has been styled by the likes of Fortuny, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Marc Bohan for Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Emilio Pucci, Rudi Gernreich, and Oscar de la Renta. Silver, who conducted the interview wearing a lightweight, hooded, 100% cotton caftan designed by Trina Turk, has taken his book on the road from Texas to Mykonos. He notes that wherever he goes he finds an enthusiastic “caftan caucus” of people wearing and talking about caftans, which he says is the quintessential Athleisure garment, counterintuitively more glamorous than body hugging clothes. It's not “just a sack,” says Silver. “The reality is that when you wear it, you have to really move your body; you become a Martha Graham dancer, even if you have two left feet like me.” SIlver, who was previously Fashion Director for H by Halston for QVC, adds that “Halston famously did his first runway shows featuring caftans and in the late 60s and 70s they became even more popular.” Right now, he says there is a caftan renaissance, with variants appearing at all the runway shows. “It may have taken a Western and European fashion several decades to really understand that it's a good idea to have a caftan in your collection.”Even though Silver wears his caftans in all seasons, he says this floaty garment, that can be worn from day into evening, is especially appealing in the summer. “It is the garment of the people. Regardless of your size or your gender, or your means or your location, there is a caftan waiting out there for you.”Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle AlfonsoVisit the website:https://rodeodrive-bh.com/podcast/Join us on Instagram:@rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. Today I'm in conversation with an old friend, King of Vintage Couture Cameron Silver, the founder and owner of https://decadesinc.com (Decades), a top vintage couture boutique in West Hollywood, California. Born and raised in Beverly Hills, Cameron has great flair, and seems to know everyone who's anyone. As he writes in https://www.amazon.com/Decades-Century-Fashion-Cameron-Silver/dp/159691663X (Decades: A Century in Fashion), his gorgeous coffee table book published in 2012 by Bloomsbury, he embarked “on a career as a purveyor of only the finest pre-worn clothing.” In 1997, he opened Decades in a 1926 Art Deco building on Melrose Avenue. “I had no experience managing a business, and no real education in fashion, other than as a consumer,” Cameron wrote in his book. “But I knew that I wanted to introduce a new world of customers to vintage. Before purchasing any single piece, I would always ask myself, ‘Is it modern?'” If you go in his store, or take a look on his e-tailing site DecadesInc.com, you'll see the answer is always yes. I'm thrilled to have him on the program today. In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, host of Out of the Clouds, interviews Cameron Silver. Known as ‘the impresario of vintage fashion', Silver - who pursued acting in his teens - is a talented retailer, storyteller, and an all-round entertaining guest. In their interview, he tells Anne about how he landed working in retail while pursuing acting and singing roles, and how he started building a shop in his mother's living room, after discovering a passion for thrifting while touring around the US. Later, he founded the now famous vintage couture boutique Decades Inc. in LA, where he started to dress celebrities and stylish clients for red carpet and other assorted events. Cameron's passion for the history of fashion is linked to the fact that he believes that ‘fashion is a barometer for how we live, have lived and will live.' Himself a daring dresser, he tells Anne about style, self-expression and how much he enjoys mentoring emerging designers and consulting for brands. The two end on discussing the difficult times Cameron went through when, in the middle of the pandemic, he found himself caring for his ailing father, Jack B Silver, who passed away later in 2020. Cameron shares with both great vulnerability and kindness and in the middle of that, manages to impart some wonderful wisdom. A beautiful, touching and very funny interview. Episode 40 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is the King of Vintage, DECADES founder, author and Fashion Director of H HALSTON and H BY HALSTON: Cameron Silver.   Since fashion philanthropist Cameron Silver opened the doors of DECADES in 1997, the dress code in Los Angeles has irrevocably changed due – in large part – to Silver exhorting his frequently-photographed, trendsetting clientele to “dress up!” He is widely recognized for his impact on runway trends from fashion’s new generation of designers in New York and Paris to the way a constellation of Hollywood’s brightest appear on the red carpet. “I think of fashion, of dressing, as art. I’m not about disposable shopping. Even my day wear is glamour,” stated Silver. With the new guard of so many heritage houses from New York to Milan seeking inspiration at DECADES, it is hardly surprising Silver is frequently tapped both as public emissary and secret weapon to consult on everything from re-imagining a brand’s identity to navigating its global launch. He has served as an official ambassador for Pringle and Boucheron and as creative consultant to Azzaro. Silver also acted as creative consultant for the global launch of Samsonite’s iconic Fashionaire collection with actress Christina Ricci. In addition to Silver’s work with fashion companies, he curated the MOCA exhibition, The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton, an exhibit that continues to tour. In Fall 2011, Silver showcased his flair for accessory design via the launch of The Haskell for DECADES “Uptown/Downtown” collection, his collaboration with jewelry maven Miriam Haskell. Partnering with Modern Vintage, Silver designed a collection of statement footwear inspired by the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.Named one of TIME Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion” in 2002, Silver is a favorite pundit on E! Entertainment, the Style Network and “Fashion File.” Pulling looks from Decades’ deep closets, he styles celebrities for major red carpet awards appearances like the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards. He has also written about luxury, from shopping to travel to his front row perch at the haute couture presentations, for Harpers Bazaar, C Magazine, Departures, vogue.com, and others leading fashion media outlets. Silver narrated the acclaimed 2012 documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution about the restoration event at the famed French palace that became the fashion showdown that firmly established American sportswear.Silver’s passion for good design extends beyond the realm of fashion. He was among the first to recognize the disappearing architectural legacy of Los Angeles’ great modernist homes, and scooped up a crumbling hillside 1930 treasure by icon R.M. Schindler which he spent eight years meticulously restoring. The L.A. Conservancy awarded the efforts, the house was landmarked, and it has appeared on the covers of shelter magazines and in several books. In January 2012, The Art of Elysium recognized Silver as the year’s Visionary and creative force behind their Heaven Gala. Silver also has a professional relationship with the Friends of The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2010, he served as the Honorary Chair of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis’ legendary Dada Ball.As one of the foremost vintage experts in the country and with more than 2 decades of DECADES under his alligator belt, Silver released the coffee table book DECADES: A Century of Fashion for Bloomsbury Press showcasing an unexpected compilation of the most significant 20th century fashions, as well as many of the celebrities he collaborated with over the years. The book, released in 2012, sold out within 48 hours of release and continues to be reprinted.  Silver starred in the Bravo reality show THE DUKES OF MELROSE which premiered in March of 2013. Since September 2015, he has served as Fashion Director for H by Halston (where he appears on QVC several times per week) and H Halston, available at Lord & Taylor, Dillard’s, and Hudson’s Bay.Also on Episode 40, Wendi and Dfernando discuss the HOLLYBOOB sign and they answer listener questions: beard maintenance, daily morning routines, inappropriate 80s song choices at church services and "bad" art collecting.  On the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's dill pickle slices, slow sidewalk walkers, Sacha Baron Cohen and social media rumors.   Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE...  and our guest Cameron Silver, DECADES and his Twitter.  Remember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com
