The dance piece was genuinely terrible. The dancer couldn't really dance. The choreographer seemed to have a four movement/gesture vocabulary and the “concept” was cringe-inducing. I could tell you more about it, and I'm tempted to, because talking about terrible art can be very fun, but I think any further details would start to be hurtful and maybe mean. These artists have no real power yet. They don't deserve a take-down. I spent about a third of the piece trying to imagine what jobs these people would have in the future where they would tell their co-workers, “I used to be a dancer!” And they'll say, “Really? How wild!” And then they'll all go see the latest Nutcracker together. If it isn't already obvious, these artists were young. They had not yet acquired any skill or vision or discernment. They were given an audience and a platform they were not ready for and it was hard to watch. Was I jealous? Absolutely. I'd love for someone to gift me a stage and an audience. I do not take such things for granted. But I also don't blame these young artists for their wretched show. The Museum Of Bad Art was founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1993 to collect, exhibit, and celebrate art that is too bad to be ignored.
Story lover Lucinda Sage-Midgorden and I met here on Follow Your Curiosity last year. We got together this past week for a short conversation for her Patreon about why you should think about making bad art and embracing anti-perfectionism. What does that mean (and not mean), and how might it change your life? For that matter, how are we defining perfectionism—it's often not what we expect it to be (as I learned myself when I was training as a Kaizen-Muse coach, to my great shock and, yes, horror!). Lucinda was kind enough to share the recording of our conversation with me, and I want to share it with you. If you've been wondering if my Make Bad Art course is for you, you might find the answer here—for instance: whether you need to be an artist to make bad art, and if there's a right way to make bad art (spoiler: no, and no). This conversation is short, but you'll get a lot out of it. Make Bad Art starts on November 4th (the day after this episode is being released), but it's not too late to sign up, and we'd love to have you. All the details and signup info are here. Episode breakdown: 00:00 Introduction 01:23 Kaizen-Muse coach helping creatives break perfectionism. 05:43 Realizing hidden perfectionism hinders creative projects. 09:05 Creating bad art frees creativity for good art. 10:54 Next class starts November 4; contact details provided. 14:03 Anti-perfectionism practice: Easier and fun in groups. 18:56 Need to relax and overcome perfectionism daily. 21:51 Join "Make Bad Art" starting November 4th. Check out the full show notes (now including transcripts!!) at fycuriosity.com, and connect with me and fellow creatives on Substack. If you enjoyed our conversation, I hope you'll share it with a friend.
What happens when you make bad art? Sometimes you get really good art by accident! Here's a real-life story of a time when that happened to Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat, and why you should consider Making Bad Art yourself. Source for this story. Want to come Make Bad Art of your own, and lose perfectionism and harsh self-judgment in the process? Join us starting November 4, 2024! You don't have to be an artist, and you can't fail at bad art (unless you don't do it at all). I promise!

In this episode of Live, Laugh, Larceny, corporate mischief takes center stage as Trevin and Amanda dive into the wild world of big business blunders. Trevin vents his frustrations with motorcycles and dishes out a Killer Fact involving Disney and a tragic current event, while Amanda finds poetic justice in her ex's Facebook posts and explores the quirky Museum of Bad Art. The episode wraps up with a double whammy of petty crime stories. Trevin shares a "crappy" tale about Amazon, and Amanda takes us to a county fair for a showdown worthy of "West Side Story." You may be familiar with today's guest, Bryan Braddy for a few different reasons: perhaps you heard the extended length Pit Stop last month where Bryan interviewed me, but you probably know him from his art which is under the label Bad Art Nice Watch. If you happened to be at the Grand Opening of the new IWC Boutique on Madison Avenue, perhaps you met Bryan there as he painted live. Regardless, you will quickly learn that Bryan is one the nicest guys in and around the watch world. He and I chat about his watch collection, his art, which sort of fell into his lap, his days snowboarding in college, and his love of the game of golf. This one was a long time coming and I'm happy to share it with you, so please enjoy my conversation with Bryan Braddy. Last month, I invited you to give yourself Permission to Play. I had so much fun meeting some of you, and seeing what came out of those workshops, that I've decided to keep doing them. This month, I'm inviting you to get together with me to Make Bad Art. I know that sounds backwards, maybe even crazy, but I promise there's a method to my madness! In two minutes, I'm letting you behind the curtain on this "backwards" idea, and if that's not enough to convince you, you can read more about the power of making bad art here. Give yourself this powerful gift by joining us on Sunday, June 9 at 1pm New York time here. Or join us on Saturday, June 15 at 4pm New York time here. It's totally free, and you're welcome to bring a friend if you like (just have them register, too, so I have an accurate head count)! If you have any questions, please get in touch! See you there!

This edition of Pit Stop welcomes Bryan from Bad Art Nice Watch. Bryan told me he wanted to interview me many moons ago. I told him I'd be more than happy to do it, and though it took several months, I'm glad we were able to make it happen. This interview took place only a day before posting and on the heels of his return from New York City where he was plucked to create some art at none other than the Grand Opening of the new IWC boutique on Madison Avenue. I hope you enjoy our conversation, and as always, thank you for listening! Links: STANDARD H https://standard-h.com/ @standardh_ Bad Art Nice Watch https://badartnicewatch.com/ @badartnicewatch

Bestselling author & journalist Lionel Shriver is known for her “under-expressed, unpopular, or downright dangerous” views. She is the author of more than two dozen novels, but her latest book is more personal. In “Abominations: Selected Essays from a Career of Courting Self-Destruction,” Lionel presents a collection of her most provocative material on topics ranging from religion and mortality to gender and immigration. As a novelist, Lionel is an advocate for artistic freedom. She recently described censorship in the publishing industry in her Roger Scruton lecture at Oxford, titled “When Cowed Creatives Capitulate: Conformity and Bad Art.” She is particularly critical of the loss of beauty, style, and wit in modern fiction due to “rectitudinous, censorious, and sanctimonious” ideologies. Lionel's novels include “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” which the BBC adapted to film, and New York Times bestsellers “Should We Stay or Should We Go,” “So Much for That,” and “The Post-Birthday World.” She is a columnist for The Spectator and her articles have been published by The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, and The Economist, among others. In times of crisis, artists often feel the need to take a stand, to engage in activism. But our guest on today's program says we should recognize that art and politics have very different agendas. “These are different realms,” he writes, “and the values of one can be inhospitable — even deadly — to the values of the other.”George Packer is a staff writer at The Atlantic, and the author of ten books. Getting started can be the hardest part. It doesn't seem to matter if you're a beginner and don't know what you're doing or an old pro that just doesn't have any inspiration. Sometimes it takes bad art (or the f-ing first draft, as Brene Brown likes to call it) to get the ball rolling. This week, we talk about our personal experiences making bad art and staring at a blank page and wrap up with tips to help you power through. Episodes mentioned: You gotta start somewhere (Ep. 2), How to be a good beginner (Ep. 3) Become a Zest Friend! Make.Do. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your gift may be tax-deductible. Or it it simply another case of what Safy Hallan Farah calls, "the true crime-ization of low stakes interpersonal drama"? Also, would Maia give Hannah her kidney? Let's find out!
