This epiosde is sponsored by Better Help. Hey Listener, you asked for a greatest hits medley of all our NXIVM related guests in one or two meaty episodes. And hear ye, hear ye we have delivered. This is our second NXIVM extravaganza, and we hope you dig it. We'll be back soon with all new episodes, and until then you can always hang out with us on Patreon at patreon.com/alittlebitculty if you can't get enough of our culty, culty content. But now…let's dig into the main course shall we? Keith Raniere's trial was at the center of The Vow Season 2 – and this episode is taking you even further into the courtroom circus. We're featuring insights from three people who had as close a look as one could get. First, you'll hear from Moira Kim Penza – the prosecutor who brought Keith Raniere to justice. Her accomplishments are mighty: Like Keith's conviction on all counts including racketeering and sex trafficking and a brisk 120 year sentence. Moira's groundbreaking approach to the case has been credited with paving the way for other sex trafficking prosecutions against powerful individuals. In other words: She's a total badass. In this episode, Moira sits down with Sarah and Nippy to talk about what it's like to take on a world-class dirtbag (our wording, not hers) and what really chaps her ass about NXIVM's Voldemort. More about today's guest: Moira is now in private practice as a litigator, and a partner at Wilkinson Stekloff. Crain's New York business named her in the 40 under 40 list, she's been ranked as one of Bloomberg Law's 40 under 40, and her legal analysis has been featured in The NY Times, CNN, ABC, NPR and Daily Beast. Next you'll hear from Robert Gavin. Robert has been a news reporter for 28 years, having also worked for two years as an editor. Originally from Staten Island, Gavin began his career by covering the New York City police and fire departments, the NYS Capitol, State and Federal Courts, various murder trials, and cases involving terrorism, the mafia, street gangs, and political corruption. And eventually, Robert's role in the NXIVM trials and their coverage would play a crucial part in bringing down Keith Raniere. Finally, you'll hear from Vanessa Grigoriadis, who is an award-winning longform journalist and podcaster, having published profiles on the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Lady Gaga, and Arianna Huffington. So how did she get tied up in NXIVM's bullshit while also reporting on the cult? Well, the short answer is: anyone and everyone is susceptible to coercive control and persuasion, even members of the press. The long answer? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out. Without further adieu. Here's our NXIVM medley part two. To accommodate this, he moved to a large warehouse in Valenton and expanded his team of blacksmiths and metalworkers who combine traditional skills, and new technology.Atelier Steaven Richard has become famous for its artistic metalwork. Prestigious designs include a bespoke metal floor for the studio of Karl Lagerfeld, the elevator doors for the Hotel de Paris in Monaco, and a ‘Steaven Richard' limited edition bottle for Remy Martin. We started to interview him in front of his wall of gorgeous wall samples in a colourful array of textures, patinas and designs and then went through to the workshops. And we also tour his huge hangar-like workshop, which is buzzing with activity and the thrum of machinery.Enormous shelves hold sheets of carefully-labelled metals. There's large-scale equipment, and workers hand-finishing on long benches. It's artisans work on a grand-scale. What WE do in the shadows? We TALK to amazing people like Harvey Guillén, who joins Matt & Bowen on this terrific episode of Las Cultch to get into it on poppers culture, celebs being "on the A-list", the Met Gala and how Harvey celebrated but also lightly stuck it to Mr. Lagerfeld, Drag Race guest judging, Sasha Colby, shooting and auditioning for What We Do In The Shadows, Toronto cultures, rude men in fedoras, and navigating homophobia. Also, how Titanic and Kate Winslet gave way to Harvey's culture that made him say culture was for him: Peter Jackson, and the film Heavenly Creatures starring Kate and finalist Melanie Lynskey. All this, the origin of the middle finger, auditioning with Jerri Blank monologues, doing Wicked in Osaka, Japan, Hilary Duff's music, when you can really call yourself a New Yorker and the idea of wanting to smell like Johnny Depp.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This month has been one of the most sparkly in ages. First, we had the Met Gala in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's annual black-tie fundraiser, to kick off its latest blockbuster exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, on show until July 16. Invitees were asked to dress in homage to Karl Lagerfeld, the longtime designer of Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé, as well as his own namesake brand. Karl died in 2019, at the age of 85. That dictate meant high glamor on the red carpet, with lots of important jewelry. A few days later, there was the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey, and while, in these difficult economic times, guests were asked not to wear coronets and tiaras, there was still a lot of remarkable jewelry on display, most notably the King and Queen's crowns. And now we have the Cannes Film Festival, a two-week-long glittering Red Carpet parade on the Riviera, and, by far, the glamest cinema event of the year. Anything and everything goes at Cannes. To talk about all this shimmer and shine, and how it's sustainable–because, yes, it is–we have leading jewelry expert Carol Woolton. When Carol joined Tatler magazine in London in 2001, she created the role of jewelry editor, one she later carried on to British Vogue, and one that is now an important post at all major glossy magazines. She has written several books on the subject, including The New Stone Age, and coming this fall, Dolce & Gabbana High Jewelry, published by Rizzoli. And Carol has her delightful podcast, called If Jewels Could Talk. On it, she speaks with owners of important jewelry collections, and about the history of famous jewelry. This fall, a book inspired by the podcast, also called If Jewels Could Talk, will be published by Simon & Schuster.Read the transcript of this episodeGet to know Dana Thomas and her book FashionopolisLearn more about Carol Woolton and If Jewels Could TalkDiscover the fashion brand Another TomorrowExplore the new Green Dream website, thegreendream.studio

What was the purpose of Donald Trump's visit to Ireland? As Marion touches down in Dublin after her holiday, she puts forward her perspective on why Trump was visiting during the beginning of his civil rape trial in New York. Is Trump afraid to face E Jean Carroll as Joe Tacopina uses his thuggish methods to take on the trial. The most damning evidence against Trump in the trial being used is the infamous ‘Grab ‘em by the pussy' Access Hollywood tapes. Marion gives a run down on what's been said so far in the trial. Tucker Carlson is out of a job at Fox News after alleged racist text messages he sent. Was it the straw that broke the camels back or was Carlson on his way out when he said January 6th rioters were peaceful tourists? Where does Carlson go from here? Marion gives her views on potential networks that may take him on for less cash that are to the right of Fox News. Was there an assassination attempt against Vladimir Putin this week? Marion doesn't think so. Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone strike over the Kremlin on Wednesday. Marion gives her views on what bleak motivation Russia may have for making the claim as she discusses how Ukraine is fading from the news agenda. What is the value of the Met Gala in times of economic crisis? We debate whether the parade of exuberant wealth and excess is necessary after the inaugural event celebrated the life's work of Karl Lagerfeld on Monday. And while stars were making their way down the red carpet screen writers were preparing to strike for their rights in LA. Does Joe Biden have a writer's room himself? After the White House Correspondents dinner it certainly looks that way. I look at the best jokes from Biden's set as he and Marion discuss dinner's of the past. With jokes about Tucker Carlson's sacking and his age on the table, sleepy Joe has a few tricks up his sleeve. I am also on tour right now. T Lo dive into the life and career of legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, whose work inspired this year's Met Gala. From his work revitalizing classic old houses to his love of celebrity and his history of problematic statements, they uncover why he never deserved the honor of a Costume Institute exhibition and give their picks for who deserved it more.
The 2023 Met Gala red carpet was back again last Sunday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the annual affair celebrated the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Now, before y'all decide that the Met Gala may not be your cup of tea, listen long enough to indulge as Holly and our LADY ABOUT TOWN, Nolan, give us their rundown of the best and worst dressed candidates, and of course, some hilarious (and possibly inappropriate) commentary! This gala honored the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld—the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, and his own eponymous line—and raised funds for The Met's Costume Institute. Just as important as the exhibition, of course, is the star-studded red-carpet spectacle that took place as guests made their way up the famous Met steps. After all, the Met Gala—often dubbed the “Super Bowl of fashion”—has created some of the most memorable (and viral) celebrity red carpet looks from the past decade. OVERALL THOUGHTS: This year's theme lent itself to all things Karl Lagerfeld, which in most cases focused on his years as the Creative Director at Chanel. Translation: we saw a lot of black-and-white dressing, as well as Chanel's trademark tweed, quilting, pearls...lots of pearls, golden chains, and fabric Camellia flowers. By the way, the craziest part of the night was the 3, count them, THREE people who dressed as Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette. BEST DRESSED Not that your favorite personal stylists always agree, here were the top outfits: Dua Lupa (in vintage FW92 Chanel wedding couture, and a Tiffany diamond the size of the Moon) Giselle in vintage Chanel SS07 wedding couture Maude Apatow in Chloé Vanessa Hudgens in Michael Kors Florence Pugh in Valentino (but not the head-dress...um, no.) Kim Kardashian in custom Schiaparelli (in 50,000 freshwater pearls-I wonder what that's like?) Kylie Jenner in Jean Paul Guiltier Paris Hilton in Marc Jacobs Kerry Washington in Michael Kors Jenne Ortega in custom Thom Browne Jessica Chastain in Gucci Halle Bailey in Gucci Ashley Graham by designer Harris Reed (YYYAASSSS) Viola Davis custom hot pink Valentino Jennifer Lopez in custom Ralph Lauren Sidney Sweeney in custom Miu Miu Anne Hathaway in white tweed Atelier Versace gown Amanda Seyfried in Oscar De La Renta gorgeous dress, but dressed as a Taylor Swift wanna be, so, Nolan said MEH.) Lea Michele in Michael Kors Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung Bad Bunny in Jacquemus (best Male according to Nolan) Rihanna in custom Valentino Lily Collins in Vera Wang Olivia WIld in custom Chloe WORST DRESSED Again, not always in agreement, but chosen with passion: Cardi B in a grey wig and Richard Quinn pink and grey outfit-(after party look) Gigi Hadid with her entire ass was out in Givenchy Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs (how 'bout some pants? Hated the boots that made her 6'4”.) Lizzo in a custom black silk crêpe Chanel dress with a glass pearls harness, inspired by a look from the 1991/92 ready-to-wear collection-Solid effort but eeehhhhh? Mary J Blige in custom Burberry a plunging floral dress & matching thigh-high boots Margo Robbie in a black silk chiffon gown with plastic and gold chain detailing at the waist, first worn by Cindy Crawford as part of Chanel's haute couture spring 1993 Doja Kat was lovely in Oscar, if you cut her head off Erykah Badu in Marni-Looked like a puppet from Sesame Street Kristen Stewart in Chanel-Don't understand For our besties of the podcast, we bring you this commentary on the Met Gala not because you are going to dress as Karl Lagerfeld's cat at a $300,000-per-person event in NYC, but because fashion is fun, whimsical and always keeps us guessing. This late designer is iconic in every sense of the word, from his stint at Chloé to his long-standing tenures at Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous brand to his unmissable uniform comprised of a white button-down shirt, black sunglasses, and a tailored black jacket, making him the perfect fashion figure to be honored at this year's Met Gala for the accompanying Costume Institute exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Be sure to follow along with Holly's Pinterest Board to see each and every one of these styles! Yet his list of accomplishments was almost as long as his list of controversies. He said he was “fed up” with the #MeToo movement and questioned the claims of victims who came forward during that time. “What shocks me most in all of this are the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened,” Lagerfeld told Numero Magazine. “Not to mention the fact there are no prosecution witnesses.”“One cannot – even if there are decades between them – kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,” Lagerfeld, who was German, said in 2017. He had apparently taken issue with then German chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow Syrian refugees into Germany at the time. “I know someone in Germany who took a young Syrian and after four days said: ‘The greatest thing Germany invented was the Holocaust,'” he added. As Rachel Tashjian notes in the Washington Post, Wintour has gone out of her way to champion designers who have been embroiled in the worst of scandals. That list includes John Galliano, Balenciaga designer Demna and Alexander Wang, who was accused in late 2020 of drugging and sexually assaulting several victims. Wang has denied the allegations made against him. This week: the coronation in the UK. As Charles III is crowned at Westminster Abbey this weekend, Anna Somers Cocks, founder of The Art Newspaper and a former assistant keeper of metalwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, tells us about the objects involved in the coronation and the monarchical history they convey. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York this week opens Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the latest in the hugely successful Costume Institute exhibitions. The German designer, who died in 2019, was also the inspiration for this year's Met Gala, the museum's star-studded fundraiser. We talk to Stephanie Sporn, a fashion historian and arts and culture writer, about the exhibition, the gala and the controversy around Lagerfeld's offensive comments about a range of issues. And this episode's Work of the Week is Good Housekeeping III (1985/2023) by the British artist Marlene Smith. She was part of the Blk Art Group, a collective of young Black British artists active in the late 1970s and 1980s, which is the subject of The more things change…, an exhibition at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery in the UK. Smith has re-created the work, first made in 1985, for the show, and tells us more about its making, its context, and the history of the Blk Art Group.Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, until 16 July. The more things change…, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, UK, until 9 July. Yesterday was the first Monday in May, which meant we were inundated with pics of the Met Gala. The theme this year: Karl Lagerfeld, the late controversial fashion designer who led the house of Chanel for years. In this episode, host Brittany Luse sits down with fashion editor and journalist Marjon Carlos. They separate the winning looks from the losing ones, break down the Lagerfeld legacy and play a game of "Show Me The Receipts."
Si & Veronica are surprised by the amount of pop culture news for episode 264! Becca and Thomas are expecting their first baby together this September! Much to many fans' dismay, Lauren and Cameron from season 1 of Love Is Blind will not be the new hosts for the upcoming fifth season. But, Lauren will be back on reality TV with Amazon Freevee's new competition show The GOAT, along with Bachelor Nation faves Grocery Store Joe and Tayshia Adams. Pilot Pete and Kelley have officially broken up… again. Gabby Windey talked about what actually was going on with her and Vinny on Kaitlyn Bristowe's podcast and it wasn't all jokes… they actually do have some romantic feelings but schedules make it tough. The Bachelor season 27 girlies are living their best lives and went on a Miami girls trip this past weekend. The White House Correspondents Dinner included several social media and reality stars in attendance, such as Rachel Lindsay and her husband Bryan Abasolo and some of the ladies of Vanderpump Rules. That ended up being fitting for when a Scandoval reference was made and everyone at home could see Ariana's reaction in the crowd at dinner. (Bachelor/reality TV talk ends at time marker 24m:00s) The first Monday of May aka the Met Gala has come and gone with some folks taking on Karl Lagerfeld's cat Choupette, Chanel archive looks, and pregnancy announcements from Serena Williams and Karlie Kloss. A cockroach even made its Met carpet debut. Rest in peace to Jerry Springer and all the fun compilations his show has brought us. Alex Cooper aka Ms. Call Her Daddy is engaged to her Mr. Sexy Zoom Man. People are trying to figure out if Miley Cyrus released some demo tracks under a fake name, Clara Pierce, or if someone else leaked them before they were taken off of streaming platforms. Vee went “Yikes!” to some rom com promos that might've gone too far with Glen Powell's relationship ending and people speculating about the stability of Sydney Sweeney's relationship with her fiance in light of videos with her aforementioned co-star. G'day, friends! On today's show: The Met Gala of course! It's our favourite time of year when Jason Derulo is falling down the stairs and the celebrities are doing their very best work on the red carpet. So, what did we make of the spectacle? Then, those Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell cheating rumours just got more confusing, James Corden has officially said cya to late-night TV, and the “Aussie royal wedding” that hijacked the news cycle on the weekend. This week, Mich recommended ‘Anna Wintour on Karl Lagerfeld, Kim Kardashian and those Bill Nighy rumours' in The Telegraph. Zara recommended Free Food For Millionaires by Min Jin Lee, and ‘Not caring about your job: freedom or misery?' in Haley Nahman's newsletter Maybe Baby. For part one of our Met Gala special, we paint a psychosexual portrait of Karl Lagerfeld through an assemblage of fascinating anecdotes. We theorize on his self-emojification, the influence of his German heritage, his paraphilic idiosyncrasies, and his infamous rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent. We also present “fashioncore” as a framework for understanding Karl and Chanel and offer our pre-Gala predictions. In this episode we ask ourselves - what are we the public owed when a high-profile person dies? Last night's Met Gala was "in honor of Karl," celebrating the life of Karl Lagerfeld, one of the most famous fashion designers of all time. But as woke as the Met Gala usually is, it seems as though they turned a blind eye to some very anti-woke elements of Lagerfeld's life. Liz breaks down all of the politics the Met Gala decided to conveniently ignore this year. Plus, Lizzo claims she's the new beauty standard in her latest effort to convince people that obesity is healthy. Ahead of the opening of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” exhibition, the Costume Institute's head curator discusses the legendary designer's work and lasting impact. Background:Andrew Bolton, the head curator of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, first dreamed up the idea for a Karl Lagerfeld-centric show at Lagerfeld's 2019 memorial service.Next month, that vision will be realised with a new exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” focussed on the late Chanel and Fendi designer. With the exhibit, set to run from May 5 to July 18, Bolton's goal was to focus on the designer's prolific career rather than the man behind it.“We wanted to focus on the work rather than the words or the man because he was problematic,” said Bolton. “There were those things he said that were difficult … the one thing that was authentic, real and tangible was his creative output.”This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks sits down with Bolton to discuss the upcoming show and Lagerfeld's legacy in fashion and beyond. Key Insights:Lagerfeld was a trailblazer in fashion, helping to inspire countless designers who followed him, according to Bolton. “One of Karl's greatest legacies was creating the blueprint for the modern day fashion designer impresario,” said Bolton. His influence transcended fashion, too. “He was somebody who didn't restrict his creativity down to one outlet. He was an interior designer. He was a photographer, he was a writer, he was a theatrical designer as well as a designer,” said Bolton.Bolton said that Lagerfeld was “nostalgic and sentimental,” going as far to recreate his childhood bedroom in his home. That was often reflected in his work, and is examined in the exhibition. “For somebody who loved history so much and consumed history, he could not not look back, and you see those recurring motifs in his work.”Synonymous with Lagerfeld was his signature suit, which featured a severely tailored black jacket and crisp white shirt. Bolton saw that outfit as a simple ensemble not designed to draw attention. “To me, his greatest disguise was a black and white uniform; he created it because it deflected away from anything,” he said. While the exhibition focuses on his work, more of Lagerfeld's personal life and relationships with collaborators like Amanda Harlech and Patrick Hourcade are detailed in the book that accompanies the show. “I wanted that to be their relationship, their voice,” said Bolton. “They had very specific relationships with Karl, and they're illuminating, but I didn't want that to be infiltrating the thesis of the exhibition.”Additional Resources:Met Curator Andrew Bolton, Quiet Defender of Fashion as ArtKarl Lagerfeld: A Line of BeautyHere's Why People Are Angry About 2023's Met Gala Theme, Karl Lagerfeld: When the 2023 Met Gala theme was announced, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” the museum received some backlash due to Lagerfeld's problematic past.
