Send us a textWealthy Democrats Flock to London Real Estate After Trump's Election WinFollowing Donald Trump's recent election victory, a notable trend has emerged: affluent Democrats are increasingly purchasing luxury homes in London. Becky Fatemi of Sotheby's International Realty and Marco Previero of R3Location have reported significant upticks in inquiries and relocations from wealthy Americans. These buyers are seeking a "safety net" due to their opposition to Trump's policies. High-end rental properties are particularly in demand, as many are opting to rent due to the urgency of their moves and high stamp duty taxes on property purchases. Despite recent tax changes, including increased stamp duties and the end of favorable tax regimes for non-domiciled individuals, London remains a prime destination for these buyers. Are the Super Rich Really Abandoning Britain?Charlie Mullins, a notable figure who sold Pimlico Plumbers for £145 million, announced his departure from the UK, citing inheritance tax as a primary reason. Mullins' move is part of a broader trend where high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) are considering leaving the UK. Henley & Partners estimate a net loss of 9,500 HNWIs this year, driven by factors such as the end of the non-dom regime, tighter inheritance tax relief, increased national insurance costs, and high stamp duties on second homes. Despite the complexity and personal considerations involved in relocating, wealth managers report increased client interest in moving to destinations like Singapore, Jersey, Switzerland, and the Middle East. While actual departures remain limited, the discussion around relocation continues to grow.Co-Living Firms Set to Revolutionize the Housing MarketProminent co-living companies have launched a campaign to promote their innovative rental housing model to local authorities, national policymakers, and investors. Co-living, which focuses on community, affordability, and convenience, offers private and communal spaces such as shared kitchens, coworking areas, gyms, and lounges. Rents typically include bills, and tenancy contracts are more flexible than traditional rentals. The 'Why Coliving' campaign, led by Conscious Coliving, features participants like urbanbubble, VervLife, and HUB. Supported by the British Property Federation, CBRE, and Cascade Communications, the campaign includes multimedia content and industry events to showcase how co-living can align with housing goals and provide benefits to various stakeholders.Tom Ford Makes Largest UK Property Purchase of 2024Tom Ford has made headlines with his purchase of a property in London's upscale Chelsea district for £80 million ($104 million), marking the largest residential real estate transaction in the UK for 2024. The property, a white stucco-fronted mansion in a garden square between Hyde Park and the River Thames, adds to Ford's extensive real estate portfolio, valued at over $300 million. This acquisition follows Ford's sale of a home in Regent's Park, as he anticipates new government tax hikes on high-value properties. Ford's portfolio includes notable properties such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's former Hamptons estate, a Palm Beach mansion, and Halston's former Manhattan townhouse. Since retiring from fashion, Ford has shifted his focus to his impressive real estate investments.Maximize your property wealth with London Property. Turn challenges into opportunities. With expert knowledge and reach, we tackle the complexities and inefficiencies of the property market with you.

Today on the show we are talking about American fashion, specifically Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion, the brand-new book from Nancy MacDonell, out August 27. Prior to World War II, American designers were nothing short of second-class citizens to the French. But, after the Nazis invaded Paris during the war, everything changed for French fashion, and by the time the war ended in 1945, the American look was in fashion. What is the American look, you ask? Nancy answers that for us today, as well as introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters who helped birth American fashion: Elizabeth Hawes, Eleanor Lambert, and Claire McCardell, for starters. Soon, American fashion began to beat the French at their own game, and this is all a leadup to the Battle of Versailles, which we interviewed Robin Givhan about on the show last year. American fashion is thriving now—at $500 billion, it's the largest fashion industry in the world—but there would likely be no Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Halston, or Michael Kors without the Empresses of Seventh Avenue. These women have largely been forgotten to history—that is, until Nancy MacDonnell came along. Nancy is a fashion journalist and fashion historian that writes The Wall Street Journal column “Fashion with a Past,” which explores the historic roots of current fashion trends. Nancy has written everywhere from The New York Times to Elle, Vogue, and many other publications, and she's written five books, including The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites. In addition to her work as a writer, Nancy is also an adjunct lecturer in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Let's take a listen to what she has to say. Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion by Nancy MacDonell
Lauren takes a minute to catch up with Nancy MacDonell, author of "Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion," to discuss designers Claire McCardell and Elizabeth Hawes, and why Yves Saint Laurent is still bigger than Halston and Bill Blass. A rebel. An artist. A maverick. Elsa Peretti created jewelry inspired by the world around her and this is only part of her legacy. Elsa inspired a style of jewelry that is classic and timeless, with pieces that have held resonance across generations. Collaborations with designers such as Halston, Giorgio di Sant'Angelo, and most successfully with Tiffany placed Elsa's work on the map globally. But under her iconic pieces — the bone cuff, the vase necklace, and Diamonds by the Yard — lies a woman who created with authenticity that reverberated through her work. In this episode, Deena pays homage to Elsa by tracing her origins, discussing her creative process, and sharing her thoughts on what made Elsa a force to reckon with. Hosted on Acast. Debbie Harry defined iconic band Blondie's look. Chris Stein―her performing partner, lover, and lifelong friend―was its architect and defined its sound. Parallel Lines, their third album, catapulted to #1, sold 20 million copies, and launched singles like "Heart of Glass", "Hangin' On the Telephone," and "One Way or Another", providing the beat when Bianca Jagger and Halston danced at Studio 54 and the soundtrack to every 1970's punk-soundtracked romance. Chris Stein knows how to tell a story. Under A Rock is his nothing-spared autobiography. It's about the founding of the band, ascending to the heights of pop success, and the hazards of fortune. Famous names march through these pages―Warhol, Bowie, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more-but you can get famous names anywhere. As the heat of summer rises on Rodeo Drive, how better to stay cool and chic than in the most versatile, enduring and fluid garment of all time –– the Caftan! So says the man with more than thirty of them, Cameron Silver, author of the new book Caftans: From Classical to Camp.Silver talks with Rodeo Drive - The Podcast host Lyn Winter about the history, design and appeal of the caftan, which he says is the most universal and ancient garment in the world. “It is this wonderful garment of comfort that's size inclusive, that's gender fluid, that can be modest or sexy. It can be voluminous or follow the lines of the body, it can be luxurious, or very accessible.”He points out that the caftan, essentially a square of fabric with holes for the head and arms, kept plain or highly ornamental, has been worn by Jesus, Moses, Muhammad and Buddha. “It is this cultural garment of incredible reverence in Morocco,” says Silver; it was worn with high camp by the singer Demis Roussos and extraordinary grace by Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and numerous other celebrities. It has been styled by the likes of Fortuny, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Marc Bohan for Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Emilio Pucci, Rudi Gernreich, and Oscar de la Renta. Silver, who conducted the interview wearing a lightweight, hooded, 100% cotton caftan designed by Trina Turk, has taken his book on the road from Texas to Mykonos. He notes that wherever he goes he finds an enthusiastic “caftan caucus” of people wearing and talking about caftans, which he says is the quintessential Athleisure garment, counterintuitively more glamorous than body hugging clothes. It's not “just a sack,” says Silver. “The reality is that when you wear it, you have to really move your body; you become a Martha Graham dancer, even if you have two left feet like me.” SIlver, who was previously Fashion Director for H by Halston for QVC, adds that “Halston famously did his first runway shows featuring caftans and in the late 60s and 70s they became even more popular.” Right now, he says there is a caftan renaissance, with variants appearing at all the runway shows. “It may have taken a Western and European fashion several decades to really understand that it's a good idea to have a caftan in your collection.”Even though Silver wears his caftans in all seasons, he says this floaty garment, that can be worn from day into evening, is especially appealing in the summer. “It is the garment of the people. Regardless of your size or your gender, or your means or your location, there is a caftan waiting out there for you.”Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle AlfonsoVisit the website:https://rodeodrive-bh.com/podcast/Join us on Instagram:@rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. John Mytton is often called an eccentric, but that doesn't really capture his whole story. In 1973, a fashion show was held in France which became known as the Battle of Versailles, a duel between designs from modern America and the capital of couture, Paris. Five American designers, including Oscar de la Renta and Halston, were invited to show their work alongside five of France's biggest names, including Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy. The aim was to raise money to help restore Versailles, a 17th Century palace built by King Louis XIV, but the media billed it as a competition between the two countries.By the end, the Americans were declared the winners. The show also highlighted their industry's racial diversity on an international stage, with 10 women of colour modelling work by US designers. Bethann Hardison, one of the models, talks to Jane Wilkinson about the lasting impact of the astonishing show.(Photo: Bethann Hardison at Versailles in 1973. Credit: Jean-Luce Hure/Bridgeman Images)

"A group of beautiful yet troubled twenty-somethings rebuild her life after she is most understanding in bars." Whose life are they rebuilding? Why is she so understanding? Does this all take place in the late 1940? Our guest, author Esme Symes-Smith, is here to help us work out all these details! Check out their Sir Callie book series, starting with "Sir Callie and the Champions of Halston," and you can also find them online at esymessmith.com.
FX is debuting a new series created by Ryan Murphy — called Feud: Capote and the Swans -- regarding writer Truman Capote's relationship with several famed New York society women. And it's such a New York story that listeners have asked if we're going to record a tie-in show to that series. Well, here it is! Capote -- who was born 100 years ago this year -- and the "swans" are part of the pivotal cast of this podcast, the story of one of the most exclusive parties ever held in New York. Tom and Greg recorded this show back in November of 2016 but, likely, most of you haven't heard this one.Truman was a true New York character, a Southern boy who wielded his immense writing talents to secure a place within Manhattan high society. Elegant, witty, compact, gay — Capote was a fixture of swanky nightclubs and arm candy to wealthy, well-connected women. One project would entirely change his life — the completion of the classic In Cold Blood, a ‘non-fiction novel' about a horrible murder in Kansas. Retreating from his many years of research, Truman decided to throw a party. But this wasn't ANY party. This soiree — a masquerade ball at the Plaza Hotel — would have the greatest assemblage of famous folks ever gathered for something so entirely frivolous. An invite to the ball was the true golden ticket, coveted by every celebrity and social climber in America.FEATURING: Harper Lee, Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, Frank Sinatra, Robert Frost, Lillian Hellman, Halston, Katherine Graham and a cast of thousands (well, or just 540)Visit our website for fabulous pictures of this star-studded affairOTHER RECOMMENDED LISTENING:The History of the Plaza HotelThe Beatles Invade New YorkLeonard Bernstein's New York, New YorkAt Home With Lauren Bacall
Many service-based entrepreneurs tell me, “My services seem so ordinary! I want to create a sense of excitement among potential clients.” It's how lots of small business owners (including me) begin looking at their websites and sales letters. That doesn't mean inventing wild stories or digging into your distant past for inspiration. Any story comes with hidden pitfalls and many people resist getting started. We can learn from a unique, creative experiment co-created by an anthropologist and a writer. They transformed ordinary thrift store purchases (none more than $2) into valuable objects that commanded high prices. Their secret? Writers were asked to invent stories surrounding each object. As business owners, we can learn from their story. Of course, business stories must be accurate. You can't deceive your audience. But you can apply these principles to describe your offer. In fact, that's what we do in a story that sells. What you'll learn in this episode: Examples of how stories can transform ordinary objects into valuable treasures (including a close-to-home example from a business owner) Qualities of stories that increase the value of ordinary offers (while remaining completely truthful) What you get people to say when you tell a selling story (which is why these stories succeeded) RESOURCES: My self-paced video course: From Storytelling to Story-selling My self-paced video course: Brand Your Business With Stories “Borrow my brain” consultation on storytelling FREE: 17 Surprising Ways To Use Storytelling For Your Business Growth - Click here. Welcome to Made in the Hamptons , I'm your host Jill Laurence and this week I have a wonderful conversation with the man regarded as the merchant prince, former gap and JCrew CEO, Mickey Drexler.Mickey opens up about his early days in the retail industry at big names such as Bloomingdales and Ann Taylor, where he would sharpen his skills to move onto a pivotal role at the Gap. During his tenure he created the mega brand Old Navy, which would soar to unimaginable popularity, turning the Gap brand from a failing jean shop to an $18billion retail giant.Things would take drastic turn though as Mickey would be ousted from the company and you'll never believe who delivered the startling news.He would soon rebound at JCrew, where he also created the Madewell brand, turning the struggling preppy retailer into a design darling and favorite among the budding influencer industry. Today, he is a partner at Alex Mill, a brand the embodies the timeless and attainable design that Mickey is long known for.We also chatted about Mickey's impressive real estate collection namely his love for renovating historical homes in the Hamptons, one of which was Montauk's Eothen, the former long time estate of Andy Warhol, which has entertained such famous names as Jackie Onassis, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Halston and many more.I found it to be a wonderful conversation about resiliency, determination and hard work and I think you will really enjoy it as well. So without further ado, my conversation with Mickey Drexler.

From beauty in our last throwback pick episode to fashion in this one, I have another of my heroes, Robin Givhan, on the program today. Robin is a fashion critic at The Washington Post and is a Pulitzer Prize winner, having won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006—the first time that award was given to a fashion writer. Just as she herself has made history, her 2015 book The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History talks about a night that was so culturally impactful it forever changed the history of fashion, specifically American fashion. The Battle of Versailles took place 50 years ago this month, and saw five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Bohan, and Hubert de Givenchy) pitted against five American designers (Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Bill Blass, and Anne Klein) in a competition concocted to raise money for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. The deck was more than stacked against the American fashion designers—it was all but assured that victory would go to the French. But then, lo and behold, the Americans stole the show, and not just the American fashion industry but the global fashion industry changed forever. It is a fantastic conversation about a game-changing moment in history with one of the most respected journalists in the fashion stratosphere. I can't wait for you to listen. Which famous designer refused to pay for $100,000 worth of samples? What major eyewear company has a Chief Financial Officer with no credentials besides being a party magician? Where does being over a size 6 and an A cup make you "fat?" What really happens behind the scenes at Fashion Week? I LOVE clothes. I love theatrics. I love escapism. What I do not love is when some people suffer greatly to compensate for others' greed. On the heels of New York Fashion Week, I decided to revamp and re-release one of my juiciest, most scandalous, most shocking, and all-time favorite episodes. Our anonymous contributors went to hell and back in different parts of the exploitative, discriminatory, and deeply unglamorous Fashion Industry. With the help of DeuxMoi, I found ex-employees of American Eagle, BCBG, Dolce Vita, Halston, Free People, Linda Farrow, Stone Cold Fox, Victoria Beckham, Zac Posen, and some of the most famous- and infamous- fashion houses IN THE WORLD that I can't mention by name! From dreamy, druggy parties to nightmare celebrity clients, body shaming to illicit sex, criminally low salaries and even lower self-esteem, turns out fashion is everything and nothing you thought it would be. In the words of one of our confessors: “we're paying countries and people literally no money because we [the consumer] need fashion. I don't think people realize that.” ~ GOT A SECRET TO GET OFF YOUR CHEST? Share your own confession - or thoughts and feedback - at confessions@aliweissworld.com. There's nothing invisible about the beauty, strength and savvy of pathbreaking model and fashion industry icon Bethann Hardison, whose story is at the heart of the eye-opening and captivating new documentary “Invisible Beauty”. Hardison, who directs the film with Frédéric Tcheng (“Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel”, “Dior and I”, “Halston”), became a top model at a time when black was deemed not so beautiful by the fashion industry. She then went on to a highly successful career as the owner of a modeling agency and consultant to leading fashion brands. But what sets Bethann apart is her commitment to making change in the fashion industry, to force it to confront its own shortcomings when it comes to inclusiveness and diversity. Bethann and Frédéric joined Ken on the pod to discuss Bethann's remarkable journey, both on the runway and off, and how the two of them formed such a fruitful and mutually supportive creative partnership. “Invisible Beauty” opens theatrically in New York City on September 15 and in LA and other cities on September 22. If you've been following along for the past few episodes, you've heard the saga of the vintage Halston dress that Jess was planning on wearing for her birthday this weekend at the Billy Joel concert. Sadly, it's not going to happen. On the topic of vintage clothes, in a weird twist of fate, George is sharing a story about a leather jacket that found him at a vintage store this week. Do you feel connected to the original wear-er, when you find treasures at a thrift store or vintage shop?
Learn More About The Working Actor Road Map About Juan Carlos: Juan Carlos Diaz is an actor born and raised in New York City. He began acting at the age of six in various school plays and musicals while in private school. While still in high school, he began working at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre under the direction of Miriam Colon Valle, which led to his first Equity production at the age of 17 at New Media Repertory Theatre, where he immediately became part of the children's theatre company there. Juan Carlos holds a BA in theatre from Bard College, where he studied under the tutelage of JoAnne Akalaitis and Liz Smith. His work can be seen in BULL, HALSTON, LAW & ORDER, LAW & ORDER SVU, The Last Thing He Wanted (with ANNE HATHAWAY), and many other TV shows and films. I've always been a good listener so I can figure out the homework later and take notes. I went for the audition, and then this went on for about two years. I would even get emails that he's pinned for this with just the name. And you start going, "Well, I haven't auditioned for that in months, if not a year. Okay, what's the name? Let me start doing homework." And then, eventually we got an offer, and it was a guest star spot. It allowed me to understand what our mentors try to instill in us. Sometimes it's waiting. I got a, "I can't let you go out on this, not this CoStar. I'm going to wait for something bigger for you." I don't care if I'm one line or a scene. You're soaking in so much that you're going, "Oh, okay. What is that? That's the gaffer. What's he doing? Okay. Because I need to know this, right." And be part of the collective. That show allowed me to connect with, it's one of its stars, Fred Rodriguez, and being a Latino. It allowed me to say, "Hey man, I came out of college, and I didn't have hope, and I would see you on this show," I think he was on Six Feet Under. And I identified. I thanked him because he is part of a seminal movement across the board in this disenfranchised world, and he helped open doors and be a part of his show in this capacity. Not to mention, I have scenes with him. Networking You know, you'll run into a friend who you haven't done a thing with in a while, and then you, that might be a thing, or at least you're like, "Hey, let's stay in contact." One of the things that you're bringing up is relationships. It's finding those pockets of the right people. And I think now I'm starting to understand networking way better, which is, I don't have to go and do this whole formal, like a date. It's my friend who has a film. I want to support that. Oh, now I have seen four other films. I'm going to reach out to the festival, and I'm going to reach out to the directors and say, "Hey man, love that thing. Identify with that." It's also about being genuine with it. In other words, if you see a director's movie and don't like it, that's not a director you'll reach out to. Only reach out to the people who you really, really like. Something that was taught to me very early in my career, and unfortunately, it's much easier to say than to do and implement, is it's one audition in a lifetime of auditions. So you bombed an audition, honey; there will be 10,000 of these after this. You may not think so, but there will be. The other thing that you said is that, when you were talking about the spokes of the wheel, you know, I think a lot, a lot of times, the actors think they have to be the whole wheel. You don't have to be the entire wheel; you just have to do your part well. One more brilliant thing that you said is this idea that you're coming in to a casting director, to an agent, to a producer, to a writer, to a celebrity as peers. You're not trying to get them to like you. There is no us; we are figuring out this thing and bringing our own ingredients. If you want to get better, you have to have those conversations either with somebody who sees it outside of you. And or with yourself. Remain teachable. Measuring your progress. I allow myself somehow to get back to the work, and because I'm so, in a good way, obsessed with it, it's what allows me to feel 100% truly alive. Watching movies and tv to all creativity to come. Read a play.

Today's episode is with Denise Wingate, the costume designer behind Daisy Jones & the Six! If you haven't seen it yet – run don't walk, the costuming is fabulous – Daisy Jones & the Six is about the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band, based on the novel, written in rock documentary style, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A Los Angeles native, Denise began her career designing costumes and touring with none other than The Bangles, before segueing into television costuming. Throughout her career, she's always prioritized working with vintage – and because of her true love for vintage fashion and music history, it's really clear that this project was an ultimate dream role for her. We talk about all this, and the incredible vintage looks in Daisy Jones & the Six, on today's show – let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:09] Denise moved to Hollywood at 16 and grew up attending new wave shows. [4:28] Denise goes on a world tour with the Bangles, working as their stylist. [8:51] Costume design is about developing a character through clothing, and Denise's process for Daisy Jones & the Six. [13:57] The inspiration for young Daisy Jones was a young Joni Mitchell, young Linda Ronstadt – and then she morphed into Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks when she becomes a rock star. [14:40] The inspiration for Camila Dunne was a young Ali MacGraw, and then she grows into Bianca Jagger in her rockstar wife era. [14:50] Suki Waterhouse's character, cool-girl keyboardist Karen, was inspired by Patti Smith, Joan Jett, and Suzie Quatro. [15:52] Staying true to fashion moments mentioned in the book, like Daisy's first recording session outfit, or the beaded kaftan she wears in the pool. [18:45] Denise estimates she had to pull about 1,500 looks for this show! [20:15] Her sourcing process for finding special vintage pieces for the show. [23:40] Daisy Jones' coat collection – that choice for the character, and Denise's favorites, including this one that she sourced in Paris. [26:11] Camilla's transformation into Bianca Jagger would not be complete without this leopard print dress from Pickwick Vintage Market. [28:32] Denise found a patchwork leather jacket from Gandalf the Wizard in Long Beach, which she used for Graham Dunne. [30:27] Denise found a North Beach leather whipstitch white suit that Karen wore for the Aurora cover shoot. [31:44] A lot of the jewelry on the show originally belonged to Denise's grandparents, including Daisy's squash blossom necklaces. [32:45] In the 70s, rockstars would have been wearing vintage from the 30s, 40s, and older, so Denise used those kinds of pieces in the show, too. [35:27] Daisy Jones' on-stage persona, and how they used costuming to bring that out. [36:50] The final on-stage look for Daisy Jones was a gold vintage Halston dress that they turned into a cape, and a 1930s crochet metallic dress underneath. [44:55] The beauty and creativity in re-use. [49:17] Shopping estate sales with her son, also a vintage shopper, in New Orleans. If you made potions with your parents' beauty products as a kid, congrats there is a 99.999% chance you are now a fraghead. Today's guest went one step further -- from potion-making to perfume-making. Chronotope Founder and Perfumer Carter Weeks Maddox is in the Perfume Room today! Though Carter is an entirely self-taught perfumer, the lens through which he creates is backed by an MA in Critical Theory. He wrote his thesis on manifestations of the chronotope within women's postwar life writing and his fragrances in many ways exist as the olfactive manifestation of his studies. We discuss issues of colonialism in scent culture, how Carter reclaimed (and recreated) smells of his personal trauma (for profit hehe), the notion of fragrance as performance art, as well as the question at the heart of it all: for whose gaze do we wear scent?
