this week, we analyze Lord & Taylor's legacy as a premier department store to a fallen emblem of the American middle class. but just when you thought it was over, an anonymous group has decided to relaunch the legacy brand as an online off-price retailer. how does this move reflect broader trends in retail? let's examine the challenges and opportunities this business strategy brings for the fashion retailer in today's e-commerce driven market. (NOTE: at one point in this episode i mentioned that Hudson's Bay might own Canadian retailer Holt Renfrew- that's a lie actually; they're owned by Selfridges Group. but you can't lie, the vibes are so similar to Sak's Fifth lol)--Join us over on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thoughtfulthreadspodJoin us over on TikTok and Insta: @thoughtfulthreadspodJoin us over on Substack: thoughtfulthreads.substack.comSupport this small creative platform: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=WF783EEXMLK6J --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thoughtfulthreads/support

Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Azerbaijan's path to COP29 clear after Bulgaria drops bidSummary: In the wake of Armenia's withdrawal from consideration, Bulgaria has withdrawn its bid to host 2024's COP29 global climate summit, making Azerbaijan's bid to host the meeting in its capital city, Baku, all but guaranteed to move forward.Context: Armenia's withdrawal and subsequent backing of Baku seems to be part of a larger peace-effort between its government and that of neighboring Azerbaijan, which recently invaded a breakaway region called Nagorno-Karabakh, which was predominantly occupied by Armenians, enflaming simmering tensions between the oft at-odds—sometimes to the point of military action—nations; Bulgaria's withdrawal is likely the result of Russia saying it would veto any bids by European Union nations in response to the EU's sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine; the COP28 meeting ends today, and it has been controversially held in the oil-rich UAE, and if the next meeting is ultimately held is Baku, that would mark the second year in a row in which a summit meant to help the world collectively address human-amplified climate change is hosted by a petrostate.—PoliticoOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. Willy welcomes Richard Baker. Baker is currently the governor, CEO, and executive chairman of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), and is also the owner of National Realty and Development Corp (NRDC). In 2006, he acquired Lord & Taylor for $1.2 billion and served as its Chairman. He purchased Hudson's Bay in 2006 and took the company public in 2012, getting it listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The show starts with Richard emphasizing that “We're all born with what we're born with,” pointing out his innate ability to see things differently from a young age and his drive to go a different route. He believes that we need to maximize our strengths to build our self-confidence. Having studied hospitality at Cornell University, he thinks hospitality applies to all fields. As a natural people-pleaser, he aimed to change how real estate developers do business by focusing on customer service. Although his plans to acquire Toys R' Us fell through, he created NRDC. Being in the game got him the Lord & Taylor acquisition. “If you're always hanging out by the hoop and playing the game, then you'll make your share of baskets,” he says. He states that “We're not investors, we're value creators,” using intellectual leverage as a tool. The financial crisis only led him to pivot and maneuver in the right direction. Richard spotted an opportunity in Canada to turn it into a credit landscape, buying Hudson's Bay despite initial detractors. His previous knowledge of running a department store made it easier for him to make a choice and operate the company.

Building Self-Confidence in Style with Denisse Espalter It's no doubt that our biggest enemy and worst critic in the world is ourselves. More often than not, we tend to wallow in the dark moments of our lives instead of looking ahead. But what we allow to linger in our heads and our hearts reflect on our outer disposition. At the end of the day, it's you who knows yourself best. So, would you bring yourself down and let it affect your life, or would you spend more effort loving yourself for who you are? In today's episode, Denisse Espalter joins us to talk about the idea behind Unboxed Life and Style. She shares some behind-the-scenes knowledge on running the brand and how she empowers women through it. Denisse delves deep into how to build self-confidence and teaches us how women can cultivate their personal style by looking both inside and outside. She imparts some helpful advice on how you, too, can start to shift your mindset and focus on improving yourself. If you're struggling with learning how to build self-confidence, this episode will offer invaluable insights to help you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how small businesses can effectively navigate the PR space. Find out how you can cultivate your personal style. Everyday Woman's Guide to Doing What you Love Unboxed Life and Style: Website | Instagram | Facebook Love the Skin You're In Course Episode Highlights Before Unboxed Life and Style Unboxed Life and Style evolved from the pandemic. Denisse previously worked for Lord + Taylor as a Regional Marketing and Events Coordinator before losing her job when COVID hit. Looking back on her big life experiences, she wanted to empower women to pivot their mindset when faced with challenges. Unboxed Life and Style evolved from feel-good boxes and self-care to coaching women in maneuvering their mindset. How to Navigate the PR Space and Get on TV Denisse did a segment around career pivoting amidst COVID on Ticker News. It is one of the highest promotional 24-hour news stations in Australia. Her background is in fashion marketing and design. Denisse says it's about learning how to pitch yourself as an expert. You need to reach out and go for opportunities. Look at what's relevant now. Then, try to tie this into your business when sending a pitch. Denisse's Favorite and Not-So-Favorite 90s Trends Denisse's favorites include plaid shirts and velour tracksuits with matching jackets and pants. Not-so-favorite ones include “super” tracksuits, sheer dresses, and flare leg pants. Meanwhile, Denisse is unsure about short cardigan sweaters. Cultivating a Personal Style There is a lot of pressure in our society on what it means to look perfect. The key to having your personal style is loving yourself for who you are and your inner beauty. The more you do this, the more it will reflect on the outside. You can do all physical self-enhancements, but there are certain things about yourself that you can't change and need to embrace. Learning how to build self-confidence shows externally as well. The Biggest Struggles People Have When Leveling Up Their Style One struggle is developing the maturity level of your style. As you age, you can have a more mature look and still look stylish and incredible. Another thing is learning what skincare routine works for you. Finally, people find it challenging to get back into a routine. How Denisse Works on Skincare for Her Clients Denisse can refer her clients to estheticians if they want to dig deeper into skincare. Her personal favorite brand is Kiehl's. Many women come to Denisse asking about skincare for their teens. Another tip on how to build self-confidence is to have a routine of taking care of yourself. Young girls learn a lot about the importance of skincare on the internet. Parents only need to encourage them at home. Unboxed Life and Style Boxes as gifts are one of the first pieces of Unboxed Life and Style. The idea came to fruition because Denisse felt that people were getting lost in the mayhem of COVID. It aims to uplift people and give them a surprise that would make them smile and feel great. She started with women's, teen boxes, special holiday little mini boxes, and customized boxes. Denisse tries to partner with women-owned or local businesses to support them and get unique products as well. Listen to the full episode to learn more about Unboxed Life and Style's boxes, from promotion to packing and shipping! On Everyday Woman's Guide to Doing What You Love This book is a co-authored book together with 30 to 40 women. It delves around what they want to teach women about being happy and life experiences that women can resonate with. Denisse connected with them as they were looking for more women to participate in their advocacy of empowering women. Denisse on Juggling Different Roles Denisse says it takes a lot of good communication and having a great partner to back her up. She's always motivated; she loves a long to-do list and crossing things off it. It's a matter of how much you want something to happen. She connects with people by sharing her expertise in the hopes that she can help them. Denisse's Daily Non-Negotiables Denisse enjoys a cup of coffee when she wakes up. Waking up a little earlier than everyone else allows Denisse to have her “me” time and keep herself centered and focused. She values being grateful and writing a gratitude list. Her Advice on How to Build Self-Confidence The majority of it comes down to adjusting your thoughts and your beliefs on who you are. Mistakes aren't permanent. Try to be positive in anything that you're doing. Give yourself credit for what you do. Surround yourself with people who make you happy and empower you. Take time for yourself and your body. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “I want to help women develop, and encourage and empower them that when you are faced with these life experiences that you can go on, you can better yourself, and you can encourage. And as I always say, style your self-confidence.” “I think a lot of people, especially entrepreneurs, doubt themselves and [their] strengths and what they're capable of doing. And it's, you have to get out of that comfort zone. And you really have to push yourself.” “I think the main thing to [have] your personal style is really loving yourself for who you are and your inner beauty. The more you start doing that, the more it'll reflect on the outside.” “I think the first thing a lot of women do is put a lot of pressure on themselves on like, any mistakes you've made, or they are very hard on themselves. And, you know, mistakes aren't permanent. They're a reflection, and they're isolated moments in your life.” “On anything that you're doing, give yourself a pat in the back. Because being a mom, entrepreneur, living the day to day life that we live nowadays, isn't always like a walk in the park.” About Denisse Denisse Espalter is a renowned top Life & Style Coach and widely recognized and sought-after communications expert. Episode 40 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is the King of Vintage, DECADES founder, author and Fashion Director of H HALSTON and H BY HALSTON: Cameron Silver. Since fashion philanthropist Cameron Silver opened the doors of DECADES in 1997, the dress code in Los Angeles has irrevocably changed due – in large part – to Silver exhorting his frequently-photographed, trendsetting clientele to “dress up!” He is widely recognized for his impact on runway trends from fashion’s new generation of designers in New York and Paris to the way a constellation of Hollywood’s brightest appear on the red carpet. “I think of fashion, of dressing, as art. I’m not about disposable shopping. Even my day wear is glamour,” stated Silver. With the new guard of so many heritage houses from New York to Milan seeking inspiration at DECADES, it is hardly surprising Silver is frequently tapped both as public emissary and secret weapon to consult on everything from re-imagining a brand’s identity to navigating its global launch. He has served as an official ambassador for Pringle and Boucheron and as creative consultant to Azzaro. Silver also acted as creative consultant for the global launch of Samsonite’s iconic Fashionaire collection with actress Christina Ricci. In addition to Silver’s work with fashion companies, he curated the MOCA exhibition, The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton, an exhibit that continues to tour. In Fall 2011, Silver showcased his flair for accessory design via the launch of The Haskell for DECADES “Uptown/Downtown” collection, his collaboration with jewelry maven Miriam Haskell. Partnering with Modern Vintage, Silver designed a collection of statement footwear inspired by the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.Named one of TIME Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion” in 2002, Silver is a favorite pundit on E! Entertainment, the Style Network and “Fashion File.” Pulling looks from Decades’ deep closets, he styles celebrities for major red carpet awards appearances like the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards. He has also written about luxury, from shopping to travel to his front row perch at the haute couture presentations, for Harpers Bazaar, C Magazine, Departures, vogue.com, and others leading fashion media outlets. Silver narrated the acclaimed 2012 documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution about the restoration event at the famed French palace that became the fashion showdown that firmly established American sportswear.Silver’s passion for good design extends beyond the realm of fashion. He was among the first to recognize the disappearing architectural legacy of Los Angeles’ great modernist homes, and scooped up a crumbling hillside 1930 treasure by icon R.M. Schindler which he spent eight years meticulously restoring. The L.A. Conservancy awarded the efforts, the house was landmarked, and it has appeared on the covers of shelter magazines and in several books. In January 2012, The Art of Elysium recognized Silver as the year’s Visionary and creative force behind their Heaven Gala. Silver also has a professional relationship with the Friends of The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2010, he served as the Honorary Chair of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis’ legendary Dada Ball.As one of the foremost vintage experts in the country and with more than 2 decades of DECADES under his alligator belt, Silver released the coffee table book DECADES: A Century of Fashion for Bloomsbury Press showcasing an unexpected compilation of the most significant 20th century fashions, as well as many of the celebrities he collaborated with over the years. The book, released in 2012, sold out within 48 hours of release and continues to be reprinted. Silver starred in the Bravo reality show THE DUKES OF MELROSE which premiered in March of 2013. Since September 2015, he has served as Fashion Director for H by Halston (where he appears on QVC several times per week) and H Halston, available at Lord & Taylor, Dillard’s, and Hudson’s Bay.Also on Episode 40, Wendi and Dfernando discuss the HOLLYBOOB sign and they answer listener questions: beard maintenance, daily morning routines, inappropriate 80s song choices at church services and "bad" art collecting.
In this weeks episode, Todd talks about many things including Lord & Taylor, James Hong, Father/Son talks, Darcey and stairs, college football and a very eye opening documentary about our Olympians.

We’ve recently heard that Jos. A. Banks, Brooke’s Brothers, and even Lord & Taylor have filed bankruptcy. However, it isn’t surprising now that dress codes are becoming increasingly more casual. A coat and tie is no longer a requirement and in some cases, could even be seen as intimidating to potential clients. Is the pandemic and remote work environment causing companies to be more concerned about output than attire? What effect will this new normal have on the retail industry?

Learn the history of interest rates, 1971-2020. Mortgage rates just hit all-time lows. Tenants are generally reliably paying the rent during the pandemic. Why? Government pays their income; expenses are lower because they can’t travel anywhere to spend. They have more to spend on the rent. Unnecessary businesses are collapsing: spas, salons, theatres. More than half of mall department stores could be closed by next year, like Macy’s, JC Penney, Lord & Taylor. If you don’t have multiple income streams, the pandemic is harder on you. Fashioncast fans, we can’t say enough about Nicole Jarecz a young and extremely talented artist with an old soul for fashion illustration. It’s a fascinating interview with Nicole as she delves deep into her experience as an artist including her early years, her education at the College for Creative Studies (CCS), and her “lucky” but unusual path into fashion illustration. Nicole is a busy woman raising two young daughters and working from home. Nevertheless, she’s found time to illustrate. After ten years as a fashion illustrator, Nicole has completed work for a Who’s Who in the fashion world including Marie Claire, Glamour, Madame Figaro, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Hugo Boss just to name a few! In addition, she’s in high demand to sketch at many fashion openings and exhibitions in and around the Detroit area. In this interview, you’ll discover new information about the use of fashion illustration in marketing versus photography, how to leverage a niche vocation, and the importance of pursuing your passion. As Nicole mentions, given the technological advances in photography and design, fashion illustration is a dying art. But, with creative talent like Nicole’s, we can all experience fashion through a different form of art. Please find Nicole on Instagram at nicolejareczillustraion and her website to share the experience and beauty of her incredible work. Enjoy!

This latest episode features one of the smartest women in retail. Mercedes Abramo is the President and CEO of Cartier North America, and I had the opportunity to sit down with her at Cartier's Hudson Yards boutique in New York City this past April. Growing up in a retail household (her dad was a senior executive at Lord & Taylor), Mercedes had her sights set on becoming a lawyer. She majored in political science, worked at a law firm, couldn't stand it, got a job in a hotel—and found her calling. After graduating from business school in Paris, where she focused on luxury brand management, it was a natural leap to high-end retail. In this podcast, Mercedes shares plenty of career advice (“you really have to be flexible”) and business-building insights. Here are five of our favorite takeaways: I asked Mercedes what she learned as she rose through the hotel and luxury goods industries. Her answer is terrific and very wise: “Learning how to listen, learning how to hear what is being said, and picking up on both the verbal and the nonverbal cues is important. Because the first thing you're really doing is building a relationship with that person in front of you. It's not about what can I sell them right now; it's about how do I build a connection.” Leading a luxury brand company is about giving customers experiences as well as products. In her previous life as a hotel executive, Mercedes learned how to create extraordinary experiences: “There is so much similarity to retail. With a hotel or a spa or a vacation, you don't leave with a product—you don't leave with anything physical. You only leave with the memories that you created when you were there.” Mercedes gives great advice on changing a career path: “People struggle with wanting to find the perfect decision. There is no perfect decision. It's about taking that leap and deciding what's a challenge that you want to embrace right now.” Get comfortable being uncomfortable, Mercedes says. “Embracing the unknown is where you grow and where you learn. There are going to be things around the corner every day that are going to challenge you, and the more that you exercise that muscle and you push through it, the more prepared you're going to be the next time.” How to become an authentic leader: “You can't copy yourself after somebody else, so I think you really need to learn the good parts of each person that you want to emulate and then figure out how to evolve your own style. This week in security we took a closer look at Fin7, also known as JokerStash, Carbanak, and a host of other names. The cybercrime group rakes in as much as $50 million a month by stealing credit card numbers, most recently from the company that owns Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, and more. They've got an interest in ATM hacks, too, and their professional acumen has turned them into what researchers estimate is a billion-dollar enterprise.
This week, Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off 5th, and Lord & Taylor department stores—all owned by The Hudson's Bay Company—acknowledged a data breach impacting more than five million credit and debit card numbers. The culprits? The same group that's spent the last few years pulling off data heists from Omni Hotels & Resorts, Trump Hotels, Jason's Deli, Whole Foods, Chipotle: A mysterious group known as Fin7.
