This week, Nathan and Clint go it alone to compare two strange curios in Travolta and Cage’s respective careers — Nora Ephron’s post-Battlefield Earth comedy flop Lucky Numbers and the painfully-earnest romantic war drama Captain Corelli’s Mandolin! While it got a critical drubbing upon release (no small thanks to the lingering stink of Travolta’s Terl), Lucky Numbers surprisingly holds up as a pitch-black comedy — with a script by Death to Smoochy’s Adam Resnick — about a down-on-his-luck local weatherman (Travolta) who teams up with the ditzy but scheming lotto girl (Lisa Kudrow) to rig the state lottery. It feels a lot like Fargo if everyone was William H. Macy, and every cast member, including Travolta’s sniveling showman, is in goofily top form. The same can’t be said for Captain Corellian’s Mandalorian, a weepy adaptation of the Louis de Bernières novel about an Italian soldier (Cage, slathering on the alfredo in his halting accent) who falls in love with a Greek girl (Penelope Cruz, similarly lost at sea with her accent work) amidst their occupation of a saintly little island during World War II. Christian Bale and John Hurt are here too, and for two-plus hours you’re just scratching your head wondering why Shakespeare in Love director John Madden (the one who isn’t the former spokesman for ACE Hardware) didn’t just put this awkward, messy epic in subtitles. The wait is over! This week on CAGE/OFF we kick off the Zeus' Butthole conference by putting the Coen Brothers' comedy-crime film Raising Arizona (1987) head-to-head against the WWII romantic drama Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), in which Nicolas Cage plays an Italian Fascist occupying a small Greek island. Can our good friend Nic's turn as a whimsical singing Fascist win out against the cult classic comedy? There's only one way to find out (which is listening to the dang episode)! I welcome the larger than life star of the hit TV Series “Combat Dealers” Mr Bruce Crompton to Tank Nuts the podcast. Bruce Crompton is an ex-paratrooper and one of the world’s biggest collectors of 20th century military equipment, vehicles and memorabilia which he buys, restores and sells with the help of his highly specialist team. He is proper cockney, born and bred in East London, who has a shrewd eye for a good deal. Over the years, Bruce has supplied his specialist vehicles for film projects such as Saving Private Ryan, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and more recently, the new Brad Pitt movie, Fury. Bruce regularly spent time on set dining with directors and mingling with the leading cast, such as Tom Hanks, Shia LaBeouf, Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and David Ayers, many of who share in interest in military history and the work Bruce and his boys do. This is a prime example of the wide spread interest this kind of subject matter has. We chat about his early life and the growing of his passion for Military history from an early age, the restoration of the incredible Panther Tank, the past and future of Combat Dealers and a whole lot more. All told with incredible wit and humour that makes this podcast a must listen.
This week, Hanna and Steve describe the greatest adventure movie ever made: Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)...lol jk - this movie is painfully slow. A real snooze-fest. Like, not even "so bad it's good." Just horrifying in several different ways. Listen to Hanna's mental state unwind and Steve devolve into nervous laughter as they attempt to describe Nic Cage's latest WWII movie (also starring Penelope Cruz and Christian Bale).
Christmas is here and the boys are celebrating with the only war movie about a mandolin player on Cephalonia starring Nicolas Cage. Joined by film and mandolin enthusiast Max Elton (previously on Episode 5) the gang dig into the film at quite some length coving suspicious accents, The Hindenburg and olives. The movie is wild with not one actor doing their own accent, but where are they really from! Find out this and much much more with a cool time with your cool friends George & Matt.
Check out our latest episode as we discuss the movie that really should have resulted in an Oscar for Christian Bale’s ass: Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. We also discuss the amazing treasure, John Hurt, and Penelope Boobs! Also, we share thoughts on the movie (and a promo) from the one and only Lore Master, Arjun, from Deep Into History. We may or may not have serenaded him. There’s also a promo for our friends at Black Case Diaries! So much good! Much wow!Check it out for yourself.
It's fascists vs a retired CIA agent with dementia today on Cage/Fight, which actually sounds like the set up for a far more entertaining movie than either of these were. In Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) Cage plays an Italian soldier during Italy's occupation of Greece in WWII. In Dying of the Light (2014) he plays a rogue CIA agent with dementia, trying to get back at the man who tortured him. In our world, Dave is getting on our nerves and may be fired any day now, but we can look past that as we have our jolly banter about these two forgotten... gems? What's the opposite of a gem?
The #CageTalk Crew is back in the saddle a gain! JT "Mad Man Mando" Money and Tzhuk Banner watched the 35th Nicolas Cage classic Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The Crew introduces us to our hero, played by Nicolas Cage, Mandolin Man: Savior of Music, who may or may not be a slider. Oh yeah, Christian Bale has a nude scene in this movie, and has a large role in the movie. Last but not least, JT wants "the sheet" to have a Rating added.
In today’s Encore Meets episode, we head backstage at the Harold Pinter Theatre, in London's West End to meet Alex Mugnaioni, star of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. We learn more about the show and how Alex's skilled musicianship plays a key part in this show.

Never Fear, because Brock and Brian are here. But oh my goodness! Thank god Brock was brave and quick-witted and resourceful enough to rescue Brian from the clutches of that nefarious, underground, evil group of organized criminals in time to record a podcast episode this week! Sincerely, for those of you that depend on us for weekly content, we apologize that we were forced to record and release the podcast a few days later than usual and deliver it to your earholes. But also sincerely, don't blame us. Blame the totally real and not-made-up-in-any-way criminals that kidnapped Brian. Anywho, the boys watched Captain Corelli's Mandolin this week, a 2001 war epic that felt much older and much slower than what it truly was. They got through it, and they lived to tell you all the tale! Before all that noise, the boys recap their adventurous weekends at home and abroad (to California), they talk karaoke and thrill rides, and there's probably a perverted joke or two in there somewhere. Naturally. Enjoy? Find us on our Social Media, if you're so inclined: Twitter: @WeGaugeCagePod Instagram: @WeGaugeCage And, as always, rate and review us on iTunes if you can or haven't already.

S1NC 57. Captain Corelli's Mandolin (tim gileza!) by Movie Review Hour
The time has come to honour our spiritual king, Nicolas Cage! As well as discussing the boring and droopy Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, we also discuss some current films including Black Panther, The Shape of Water, Tomb Raider and Paddington 2, and give Liam Neeson a telling off. But most importantly, this episode sees the launch of the #CageChallenge! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In which our hero, his co-stars, and NFL legend John Madden make a mockery of no less than 5 European dialects. Featuring our first international guest Giovanni Cervigni, all the way from Italy!
Mamma Mia! Here we go again! It's another movie where Cage's accent is all over the place, into stereotype territory, particularly odd since he is an Italian-American playing an Italian! It's Captain Corelli's Mandolin, based on a very depressing book. Is it a depressing movie? Well, it has a cast of notable Greek stars like John Hurt, Christian Bale and Penelope Cruz. For more, you'll just have to listen. Check out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/uncagedpod
This picture is even more of a slog than The Family Man because there's no one as odious as Brett Ratner involved in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, aside from it being a Weinstein-era Miramax production. It's just a dull, dull movie where no one making it looks like they're having fun, even when they're supposed to be having fun on sun-dappled Greek coasts.

With Kirsty Lang. The writer Louis de Bernières, best known for his novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, discusses his first volume of poetry, Imagining Alexandria. De Bernieres has been writing poems since he was 12, but didn't want to publish until he felt he had 'hit his peak'. He discusses how he was inspired by his love of the Greek poet Cavafy to write about the ancient world, love affairs and the fleeting nature of youth. We assess the form of the bookies' favourites for the next Doctor Who, including Peter Capaldi, better known as foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It. Singer-songwriter Cerys Matthews reveals her choice for Cultural Exchange. As John Burningham's first book Borka: The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers reaches its 50th anniversary, Kirsty visits the illustrator and author in his home and talks about the books, his unconventional education, and his addiction to online auctions. His passion is crocodiles; and he's been keeping twenty-seven of them in the back garden of his semi-detached house in Oxfordshire. Shaun's efforts to open the UK's first Crocodile Education and Conservation Centre are the subject of the TV documentary Croc Man, which is on the Discovery Channel. Andrew Barrow is a writer and journalist. At the age of twenty-two his younger brother Jonathan was killed in a car crash. He left behind the manuscript of a novel, 'The Queue', in which he prophesised his own death. Jonathan and his book form the framework of Andrew's new book which tells the story of his eccentric family. 'Animal Magic - A Brother's Story' is published by Jonathan Cape. On July 7th 2005, Magsie Hamilton-Little was a student at the School of Oriental and African Studies when she witnessed the carnage caused by a suicide bomber on a London bus.
