Born in New York City, and educated at the University of Miami, where he studied architecture, Valley's designer roots are firmly planted with Miami fashionistas. Back in 1995, Valley dressed Miami's social scene with his eponymous label, which was sold at his Coconut Grove boutique nestled on Commodore Plaza. Best-known for crafting the best-fitting pants for women, New York socialites beckoned him to the Big Apple to open a SoHo atelier. “In 2000, I packed my bags and left for New York to pursue a wider audience,” Valley says of his move. And a great decision. Valley showed regularly during New York Fashion Week with a presence in over 250 stores worldwide. His doors included well-established retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix, and Fred Segal.Hollywood embraced him, too. “I've always interacted directly with consumers,” Valley says of his business technique. He forged close relationships with his clients, including Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Saldana, Penelope Cruz, Eva Longoria, Cindy Crawford, Madonna, Cher, Cameron Diaz, Celine Dion, Jennifer Garner, and more.In 2007, the Moret Group acquired the Alvin Valley brand, expanding its distribution to Nordstroms, Macy's, Bloomingdale's and even QVC. “I'm going back to the basics and bringing back my amazing pants. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay celebrate the podcast's three year anniversary by covering a Cruisemas movie that was specially requested by a listener to talk, 'Vanilla Sky.' Andy opens it up with a dreamstate story involving Ambien that had him questioning his reality, by ending up in the wrong situation.  Then the fellas tackle one of the most ambitious big budget movies of the 2000s that is very emblematic of its era. The film opens with one of the most jaw-dropping scenes of the decade in an empty pre-9/11 Times Square, and then proceeds to bite off more than it can chew, but offers a compelling ride. It's a glimpse at a bygone era of NYC, and a bygone era in cinema where Tom Cruise offered a personal performance before his well-publicized breakdown. Along with the meta-Cruise role, is Penelope Cruz who reprises her role from the original Spanish-language film the movie is based on. Her charm, and angelic face jump off the scream, and she even graces the audience by losing her clothing in one intimate scene. Juxtaposed to her effortless charm is Cameron Diaz's manic turn as the vengeful love whose body gets lied to and spouts, "I swallowed your c** that means something." The film also marked the peak of Cameron Crowe's Hollywood reign, as his career went on a precipitous fall after failing to grapple with a perplexing third act. Unlike Crowe, Degen Cinema is not slowing down as we're grateful to all our maniac listeners who've been along for the ride the past three years, and counting. 

The Invite (2026) is the third Olivia Wilde movie we have covered after Booksmart (2019) and Don't Worry Darling (2022). With The Invite, she directs a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. She also stars, along with Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Set in a huge San Francisco apartment, married couple Rogen & Wilde invite over their raucous upstairs neighbors, Cruz & Norton, for dinner. You may have forgotten about Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride!, but back in March, we covered this Frankenstein goth romance starring Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frank. It's set in 1936 Chicago and is quite unhinged. It also features Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penelope Cruz. Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote and directed this film, in case you didn't know. The movie was a box office bomb and got mixed reviews. Mostly, we covered it in order to say goodbye to an old friend, which you will hear about in this special episode!

To make a good movie, you can take something expected (your standard romantic comedy, good vs. evil, etc.) and execute it at a high level, or you can take a familiar situation and keep tossing unexpected things at the audience to keep them on their toes.With that second scenario, it's still necessary — and arguably more difficult — to do it well, which is what Olivia Wilde seems to have pulled off with her third directorial effort, The Invite.The nature of the project almost required Wilde and the cast (including herself) to tap into their crazier creative impulses. The setting is a single location. The centerpiece is a couples dinner party, which most grown-ups will tell you isn't the place to go mining for high-quality entertainment. That all gets turned on its head pretty quickly, when the dinner-party invitation is reciprocated with a sex-party invitation.As you'll hear Dori and Kpolly discuss in this episode, the very adventurous offer is only the start of what makes The Invite such a good watch. The tension shifts throughout, as discomfort ventures into curiosity. The single-location setting demands inventive cinematography that bounces shots off mirrors and uses clever camera angles to capture the action.And, yes, there is action — just not the shoot-em-up variety. The dialogue is sharp and paced in such a way that it manages to get your adrenaline pumping by building tension and then letting it release as the quartet of characters navigate a night that doesn't go quite how anyone expected.The four-person cast hit just right, too, even though the original stars (including Amy Adams, Paul Rudd and Tessa Thompson) wound up giving way as the project was stuck in a holding pattern for a couple years. The on-screen group of Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton fit together nicely, aided by touches like Rogen's improv and the serious backstory Norton gave his character.Maybe the most unexpected thing that Dori and Kpolly found was the heart interlaced throughout the film, which balanced what could've been an uncomfortable snark-fest. So, what does the term "live-action version" really mean? In the case of Disney's remake of their 2016 animated musical hit "Moana," it means there are some real actors on screen along with a whole lot of computer-generated animation tweaked to look realistic. Same songs save for one. Dwayne Johnson is back as demigod Maui, and we have a new Moana nicely played by Cathrine Laga'Aia. Otherwise, it closely resembles the original. Somehow, that's not enough. What worked as a cartoon just seems too labored in 'live action.' “Moana” fans, stick with the original. The edgy sex comedy "The Invite" is the polar opposite of Disney. It's an English language adaptation of the 2020 Spanish hit, that was sarcastically titled, “Sentimental.” Seth Rogan and Olivia Wilde play a bickering couple whose marriage is ready to derail. To spice things up, Olivia invites the swingers from upstairs, played by Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton, to come down for dinner. Naturally, things quickly get awkward. It's essentially a razor-sharp stage play, ably directed by Wilde, that provides a great cast with a decadently funny vehicle. But the constant quarreling is a bit hard to stomach. Warning: “The Invite” is not for the easily offended. Amy Goodman, host of the daily news program “Democracy, Now” that airs here on KKFI, is the subject of the film documentary “Steal This Story, Please!” Goodman and the filmmakers will be in town for screenings and Q&A sessions on July 17th and 18th at the Glenwood Arts Theater in Overland Park.
