Join Cat and Rob for a discussion of Dying Of The Light.
"'Do not go gentle in that good night.' That's the line that I see dancing behind the blind Bartimaeus story, this man persistent enough to not be left in the dark. Dylan Thomas was the Welsh poet who authored the furious, defiant lines: "Do not go gentle into that good night…burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.' How was Bartimaeus' sight restored? By a power outside himself - you can count on that. Yet, at the same time, there was a faith-shaped persistence at work; a hope-filled determination; a refusal to go gentle into that good night. "There's no assurance that you will always get what you seek - if ever; no guarantee that the door will always open, that your prayer will be answered as you expect, or that your 'faith will always become sight' - to quote an appropriate New Testament turn of phrase. Life is far too unpredictable and exceedingly mysterious for any of that. And anyone trying to tell you different or sell you a warranty is just trying to, again to use an appropriate phrase, to rob you blind. But as people of faith - we have to have a little faith." (See Mark 10:46-52)
Arf arf, listeners - this week we're talking Paul Schrader's 2016 goofaround crime thriller DOG EAT DOG with Darryl Edge and Petros Patsilivas from the Getting Dafoe You podcast! This film was a form of creative redemption for Schrader and Nicolas Cage after the fiasco of DYING OF THE LIGHT, but is it of any interest to an audience? We report, you decide. We also decide, to be honest. The four of us have now likely given more attention to this film than anyone involved in its production, so I think we've earned the right. Fun ep, check it out! It's two movies for the price of one today! (Podcast remains free.) In 2014, Paul Schrader directed Nicolas Cage and Anton Yelchin in a thriller about a CIA agent with frontotemporal dementia trying to hunt down an old enemy before his mind goes. The money guys took the film away from him, edited it into a totally anonymous Redbox movie themselves, and released it as "A Paul Schrader Film" anyway. He was contractually prohibited from disparaging the result, but Schrader, along with the cast and producer Nicholas Winding Refn, publicly disowned the released version, and Paul drank himself into a stupor. Several years later, during the editing process on First Reformed, he returned to DYING OF THE LIGHT and made it into something between a director's cut and a fascinating work of video collage art called DARK, which is legally unreleasable but available to view for free. It's so nuts, and it changed the course of his career. We're gonna talk about it! Pastor Jonty Cornford and Rev Vanessa Williams-Henke dive into the tough topic of our Common Destiny: death. Where do we go? What does it look like? How is that reflected in our funerals? How should that affect the way we live our lives? Do not go gentle into that good night Rage! Rage! Against the dying of the light! Inspired by two of my favourite lines from Dylan Thomas' poem titled Do Not Go Gentle Into That Night, wanted to create a dance track that would also help one to get into a trance state. "Do not go gentle into that good night" is a poignant reminder of the human spirit's resilience. Through its evocative language and emotional depth, the poem inspires readers to confront death with defiance and to cherish the vibrancy of life until the very end. Cover art: Eye by M.C. Escher
Simon Alvey, Will Cooling and Dr Middup talk what may be the craziest week in American political history. Joe Biden becomes the first president of the modern era to not seek the renomination, and drops out in a uniquely public and late moment. Before that we've had his predecessor and would be successor narrowly dodge an assassin's bullet, name his vice-presidential nominee and deliver his acceptance speech. This is a week that will on for decades. We also talk Euro 2024.

Apologies for the late posting of this week's episode. Listen to the episode, and you'll understand why.
This week we are definitely a little bit cynical as we rage against the rage farming that is happening. We start with a review of the polling data that is coming out of Narrative Research, move on to a discussion on the current offerings that the Liberals, PCs, and Greens are putting toward the public, and end with a discussion on Blaine Higg's affordability measures.
Do not go gentle into that good night. “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself.” - John 14:2-3 (KJV)

The Film School Janitors are back in school, and they're going to Nic Cage University! Their goal is to watch and review every film Nicolas Cage has ever made... and will ever make! This week's assignment: DYING OF THE LIGHT As the Janitors mentioned in their LOVE, ANTOSHA review, co-star Anton Yelchin was a huge fan of Nic Cage, and this was the only film they were able to star in together. So what's it about? Another cop movie (well this time, a CIA agent) in which Nic Cage wants to get revenge. But this time, he has a form of onsetting dementia. Fun!
Nicolas Cage teams up with Paul Schrader to tell the story of an aging patriot trying desperately to fight off his demons, both outer and inner. Then the producers got their grubby little hands on the movie and turned it into a terribly generic spy thriller. gee thanks! The main Didactic Mind podcast is FINALLY back with a new episode. This one is all about the very real and visible collapse of the American Empire, and the manner in which Amerikhastan is reacting to it. In this episode, I outline the tectonic shifts in geopolitics that we have seen in the past week, and explain some of their implications for the Western neoliberal empire. I point out that neither the Chinese nor the Russians are in the least bit interested in actual hegemony - instead, they are actually interested in simply being left the hell ALONE to pursue their own courses and development paths. I specifically discuss the failings of the neoliberal ideology of Clown World and GloboHomoPaedoSatanry, and I explain how the developing nations of the world are fighting and pushing back against it. And I note the implications for Westerners and their economies as a result of their own policies. Of particular interest to me here is the rather odd Western notion that China seeks to supplant America as a global hegemon. This is simply untrue, and I explain why by pointing out some basic geopolitical realities of China's position in the world. I close by noting that Western neoliberal failures have compounded to the point where they simply cannot sustain themselves any longer, and the "turbo-Americanism" of the West is going to fail, no matter what. There will be a Domain Query episode coming up as well, as there is a question from a reader which I did not fully address in this one. Protect Yourself From Big Tech I make some pretty incendiary statements in this podcast, and in most of my podcasts. I can only do so because I take steps to protect myself from the Big Tech companies, and preserve my identity. You need to do the same – this is no longer optional, because if you don't, the gatekeepers WILL come for your head. If you don't know where to start, then I've got you covered right here with this post. Here are the specific steps that you can take: Make sure that your web traffic is safe and protected from prying eyes using a VPN – click here to get a massive 80% OFF on a 24-month subscription with Surfshark; Be sure also to check out Incogni, the new data and privacy management tool offered by Surfshark, which simply works behind the scenes to ensure that no malign actors can take advantage of your data ever again; Another solid VPN option for you is Atlas VPN, brought to you by the same company that creates NordVPN; The best SSD drive that you can get right now, with blazing fast speeds and near-native storage capabilities, is probably the SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD with NVMe technology – I bought this myself to keep a moving backup of all of my files, it's the size of a credit card, and it's absolutely superb; Build Your Platform Get yourself a proper domain for your site or business with Namecheap; Put your site onto a shared hosting service using A2Hosting for the fastest, most secure, and stable hosting platform around – along with unlimited email accounts of unlimited size; Create beautiful websites with amazing, feature-rich content using Divi from Elegant Themes; Stand for Western Civilisation Buy yourself a proper Bible; Get your Castalia Library books here; Buy yourself a proper knife for personal defence;
This week, Nathan and Clint go it alone for two more Nic Cage joints, ones in which he plays characters reckoning with their personal political failings! In The Runner, Cage plays a well-meaning but deeply flawed N'awlins politician whose attempts to heal NOLA post-BP oil spill gets thrown by one scandal after another. Cue the sub-House of Cards politicking, Connie Nielsen as a bottle-blonde ladder-climber, and Sarah Paulson as one of the least likely Cage love interests of all time! Then there's Paul Schrader's fatally compromised political thriller Dying of the Light, starring Cage as an old CIA flack whose quest for revenge against his Muslim terrorist captor 20 years ago is complicated by his failing mental state. There's glimmers of something interesting here; too bad the studio ripped the film away from Schrader and turned it into a blank, hokey mess! Still, it features Anton Yelchin in one of his final roles, so there's that. There's a lot to unpack in that line, and in that entire poem by Dylan Thomas. This last week, it spoke to me. Saying it's been a challenging week would be an understatement. Covid outbreaks, stomach flu outbreaks, teenagers...I could go on! Even with those challenges in the way, I felt that burning need to keep going, to keep moving forward. To me, these are the times that remind me why I'm doing what I'm doing. If I can't overcome obstacles in my way and continue living out my purpose, then how will I ever be able to show anyone else how to do it? When these times come up, when life starts to throw curveballs at me and give me a hard time, I get excited. It means I'm on the right path!

Interstellar - quite a film. Theoretical physics, cosmogonies, romance, McConaughey - this one has it all. We break it all down so jump in the backseat!
Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
