Jesus taught the adults and blessed the children, but the Church has gotten it backwards. That was not the case in the early days of the Church. A Vatican commission has said that there is insufficient historical evidence to support the ordination of women to the deaconate. This disappoints those who want to see women join the clergy. However, it should remind us that the really important diaconate in the Church is already being provided by women and men who are not ordained to service.
