Christina talks two magical occurences in this episode-the first is about home, and where she and her kids would live...Santa Fe is already a dicey place to find a home in this market, but somehow, one day, everything came together to find a place to lay their heads! It took one sleepy teenager, and skipping a day of snowboarding, but in the end, they got exactly what they needed. The next miracle has to do with her kids and their musical abilities...2 and 3 year olds in a band? It's hard to imagine kids that age being that committed, but they really were, and are-and are now attending the Santa Fe School for the Arts. But it was what one elderly woman told her one day that allowed Christina to know that the relationship between musician and instrument is far more sacred than she imagined. This isn't the first episode we've talked about bettering yourself in, but we're coming at it from a whole new angle: embracing discomfort. Before you protest, I'm fully aware that it doesn't sound like an awesome time. But the truth is that you're probably already uncomfortable. We all struggle from time to time with big and small things, but my expert today shares why it's a mistake to let that define your current moment in life. My guest today is Christina Ramirez. Christina wasn't always the serial entrepreneur and business coach that she is now. Once upon a time she was a mother just trying to make the work/life balance thing happen. But when she found herself missing important events in her children's lives, she knew she needed to change everything to make her life work for her. She's here today to share how we can address our everyday discomforts from an empowering perspective. ( Www.EmpoweredByDiscomfort.Com ) Let's conquer our challenges one at a time. I don't know why censoring things makes me giggle like a child, but I love it. That's not even the take away from the episode, I just really wanted to share how bleeping certain little words brings me perhaps too much joy. Anyway... I hope you all feel just a little happier, or have been distracted from the issues, and now more prepared to face them with a shrug so you can get back to the things that make you feel good. It's a new month, but not a fresh week, so these shaken up rankings are not a mistake: 1. The United Kingdom, In one of the few times I've seen a country upset the US for 1st place! The UK is led by Scotland 2. The United States, led by Texas and Oregon. 3. India, making a return after some time away. 4. Hong Kong, staying on the leaderboard. 5. Ukraine. Welcome back, it's been a while since we've seen you in the top 5! That's it for this week! Have a great week I'll see you all back here for the next episode! Is brushing our teeth killing the planet? Plastics toothbrushes, floss, plastic paste tubes discarded on the regular. Why is every toothbrush advertisement of perfect people, with perfect smiles filled with perfect teeth? What about the quirks, flaws and originality? What about diversity? Shouldn't every smile be celebrated and shouldn't caring for that smile be less harmful to the planet? Christina Ramirez began thinking about fixing these dual issues in college – then set out on a journey to learn the industry – from being a cashier at Whole Foods to consulting on syndicated shopper data – she put in the time while perfecting her products with dentists. Now Plus Ultra is an inclusive and eco-conscious line of oral care products making everyone smile.
On this episode inspiring musician Christina Ramirez shares her journey with failing to graduate and dealing with that guilt. We also talk about her connection to hip hop music and why taking an African American Studies class at University of North Carolina Greensboro was important to her. General Summary: In this episode of The Parlor, the team discusses LatinX rhetoric and its relation to Eurocentrism as described by renowned scholar of rhetoric Professor José Cortez of the Oregon State University. Cortez reflects on his desire to find the separation between Western rhetorics and Latin-American based ideologies, the concept of subalternity, and offers reason as to why the fissure is critical to identities of past, present and future LatinX generations. Detailed Summary: Introduction to the Parlor and Cortez's background and scholarly works (0.00-1.20)Cortez relates his life experience to his studies in LatinX identities(1.21-04.43); Identifying the thesis of Cortez's work and its relation to similar avenues of subalternity of LatinX rhetoric (04.43-06.49); Cortez dives into the classical identification of LatinX subgroups, their separate identifications, and the impression this categorization has on the community(06.49-08.40); The interview then incorporates the classical LatinX rhetoric and its relation to Western norms(08.41-11.45); Cortez discusses what Eurocentrism means to identification of rhetorics and why a separation is hard to identify(11.46-17.55); Cortez explains how Western narratives controlled the conversation about indigenous people, and how this conversation has formed some LatinX traditions(17.55-20.05); Cortez further details an idea found in his work which is critical of rhetoric being a political compass, or a policing authority, for the LatinX community JacqueRanciere)(20.08-26.20); The interview shifts to cover topics discussed relating to Christina Ramirez's coverage of the concept of mestizaje (26.20-29.03); Cortez further explains the concept of subalternity (subtopic Spivak) (29.03-32.54); Cortez now transitions to specific subaltern spaces in LatinX rhetoric (includes citations of Sonia Arellano and Dr. Karma Chavez)(32.54-33.30); Cortez answers, what is the most important thing your readers can take away from your work?(33.30-35.08); Thank you and credits from the team(35.08-35.50). Last year I spoke with senior photographer extraordinaire Christina Ramirez about being in a rut. I was struck by her openness and her honesty. It’s one thing to talk about being in a rut after you’re out of it, but Christina was right in the middle of it and she laid it all out there. If you haven’t heard that conversation yet, I’d highly suggest you have a listen before you continue with this one. In any case, we sat down again at PUSH conference in Green Castle, Indiana for an update and, once again, Christina had quite a bit to share. This time, I was double struck. No matter which side of the rut you’re on right now, this one will be good for your soul, my friends.
Christina Ramirez is a high school senior photographer based in San Antonio, Texas. Christina is known for being an open book when she teaches other photographers and is highly sought after at conferences for her knowledge about skin tones, growing a business and more. She is loved for being a friend to all and loving what she does every single day.
Christina Ramirez was on an assignment at UC Santa Barbara 13 years ago when she came up with the idea for eco-conscious toothbrushes. Today her Plus Ultra Bamboo Toothbrushes are sold in more than 320 retail stores in 22 states, including Whole Foods and Amazon. She also has her sights set on expanding into other eco-conscious products. In our conversation Christina shares how wise advice from her stepmom encouraged her to leave a job that had left her feeling miserable for an out-of-the-mold job that would bring her long-term happiness. The wise push, Christina says, gave her the confidence to walk toward her ultimate business dream. But her dream didn’t come without a lot of hard work and tough lessons. We talk about the ups and downs she faced when starting a new business – from flying to China to find manufacturers, to a tough lesson in quality control when her first lot of 5,000 toothbrushes were damaged. We also talk about all the steps Christina took even before facing the production hurdles to bring her idea for a bamboo toothbrush to life. She had a goal: She wanted to create a product sold at Whole Foods. So, she applied for, and was hired for, a job as a cashier. Then, for 6 years she did everything she could to move up in the company. And although she says she didn’t make enough money to even buy a car, she was happy to be working among like-minded peers while learning about the business. Christina shares how she pitched her idea for bamboo toothbrushes to Whole Foods, and how she got the green light from the company’s buyers on a category call. And then, since she didn’t even have a product yet, she shares the day-and-night hours it took to research, develop and manufacture the product shed dreamed about. If you’ve ever wanted to build a business, we think you will love Christina’s inspiring story. And we’ve got a good feeling it will give you that boost you need to pursue your very own business dreams. Other Topics Discussed: Finding a job that serves your soul Manufacturing in foreign countries The reality of the time commitment in starting a company Outsourcing The problem with old school toothbrushes. (In 2018, more than 50 million pounds of toothbrushes ended up in landfills.)
