Where do spirituality and psychology meet? Are they polar opposites or can they complement each other? This conversation touches on the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, the importance of presence, and the use of meditation for body, mind and soul connection. Ellen talks abut meditation as a vehicle to develop conscious thought which allows one to become an observer of the mind, rather than a prisoner of ruminating, often negative thoughts. Ellen calls the latter the “Critical Witness” (that part of your brain that's constantly finding flaws in you and your life). As one becomes an observer, the “Benevolent Witness” can appear and be nurtured to provide an internal voice that encourages self-compassion and understanding. The world is full of distractions. It's easy to jump from topic to topic, to multitask, and move through the day without conscious cognition of the world around us. But it's only in the present that we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and foster a sense of connectedness with others. Come listen into a deep and fascinating conversation as Ellen guides us through her journey of self-discovery and the transformative power of meditation and spirituality. Menopause takes many women by surprise. Society is focused on the illusion of perpetual youth. Marijuana is legal. It's safe. Or is it? Rayond Wiggins questions the safety of this widely used drug, both from his professional and personal experience. On the personal side, Raymond has witnessed the devastating effects of substance abuse within his family. Professionally he has administered nearly 30,000 general anesthetics, which point to the increased drug tolerance and mental health issues he has observed in marijuana users. According to Raymond, 30% of marijuana users develop an addiction and that this figure rises to 46% among young people. The physical and mental health complications associated with marijuana, including decreased IQ, increased anxiety, and even a rise in domestic violence rates accompany this increase in use. Marijuana use has more than tripled since 2010. Raymond argues that the push for legalization often overlooks the societal costs associated with increased marijuana use, including healthcare expenses and the impact on public safety. Statistics, he says, matter. And the statistics are not good. How we can collectively work towards a healthier understanding of marijuana and its implications in our lives? What is safe? What are the long term effects? Or is it all ok? Subscribers can enjoy exclusive, extended conversations from this podcast. However, the recession hit hard, and his business faced unprecedented challenges. As he struggled with financial burdens, his personal life was also in turmoil, with his wife experiencing a difficult pregnancy and his father's health declining. In December of 2008, everything came to a head. Faced with mounting debts and the possibility of losing his gallery, Aaron's world crumbled. With a newfound appreciation for life, he shifted his focus from merely surviving to thriving. He transformed his gallery, focusing on creating meaningful experiences for his customers, and rewrote his book, which eventually became the bestseller "Garage Sale Millionaire." This book details his journey and offers insights into how anyone can turn collectibles into profit. Anyone can do it, he says, especially in this digital world. Aaron's experience is about the preciousness of time, the importance of family and about creating opportunity even in the midst of difficult times. Kristina Heagh-Avritt is a former public school teacher who now supports families in finding the best educational paths for their children. Kristina focuses on the pressing issues within the current educational framework—more rules, regulations, and a lack of connection with families and students. She emphasizes how the school system is broken and suggests that the solution lies in empowering parents to take control of their children's education through homeschooling. With her experience, Christina founded Vibrant Family Education (),where she helps families navigate the homeschooling landscape. One of the advantages of homeschooling is a personalized curriculum that caters to each child's unique learning style. This flexibility fosters a love for learning, as children can progress at their own pace without the pressure of a standardized curriculum. Kristina also dispels common myths about homeschooling, such as the belief that parents cannot be effective teachers or that homeschooled children lack socialization. She argues that parents are inherently their child's first teachers and can provide a supportive learning environment that nurtures their child's interests. In fact, many homeschooled children excel socially, often being more prepared for real-world interactions than their peers in traditional schools. With parents and former teachers like Kristina, education is quietly undergoing a revolution, one that places children and mastery first. Learning is becoming fun again. And more importantly, it's providing the skills kids need in this modern world. Join the conversation. Subscribers can enjoy exclusive, extended conversations from this podcast. Marbeth Dunn's story is one of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. Growing up in a traditional environment in New Jersey, she took a leap of faith and ran away to Haiti with her husband, where they lived in the mountains without electricity or running water for seven years. Along the way, Marbeth found herself coping with potentially life threatening asthma which sent her on a quest to heal. In seeking to heal herself, Marbeth became a healer. Margot is also an empath. This unique ability eventually led her to develop her practice in somatic healing, which focuses on the body-mind connection. She describes somatic healing as a way to reintegrate emotions stored in the body, helping others to release trauma and find peace. She emphasizes the importance of feeling emotions rather than suppressing them, and how this process can lead to profound healing. Marbeth's story is not just about overcoming personal struggles; it's also about embracing adventure and the unexpected paths life can take. It's a reminder that our challenges can be our greatest teachers. Marbeth encourages listeners to trust their intuition, embrace their journey, and recognize that they are not victims of their circumstances. Joni Rodgers is, first and foremost, a storyteller. She's also a critically acclaimed novelist and New York Times selling ghostwriter. She's worked with many well known people including Paris Hilton, Justin Bieber and Elizabeth Smart. Her ability to translate people's paths into a compelling narrative is unparalleled. "As a novelist, memoirist, and collaborator, I'm dedicated to storytelling that makes an impact and provokes thought. I believe in the power of a parable and in the art of memoir as a sort of cosmic cartography. We each have a small piece of the map of human experience; sharing our stories, we bring clarity and empathy to a collective understanding." The list of Joni's publications is long. Her drive comes partly from being given just five years to live due to a seemingly dire non-Hodgkins lymphoma. "What can I do in just five years? What type of handprint of loving kindness could I leave for my children?" she pondered. The answer lies in her extensive list of publications, crafting powerful memoirs that resonate with all of us. A path to healing is always possible, says Asher Beckwitt. As both a trauma coach and a sexual abuse survivor, she understands that each journey is an individual one. Asher's own journey began with years of talk therapy, which laid the foundation for healing. However, it was the introduction of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy that marked a significant turning point. This innovative therapy helped Asher neutralize the trauma, allowing her to recall past experiences from a place of neutrality rather than reactivity. EMDR, coupled with somatic healing practices, enabled her to reconnect with her body and release stored trauma energy. Ron Mitori's new book, “” looks to the past and to the future as the U.S. position in the world evolves. His book starts off with stories of personal experiences under socialist regimes. One story, of Lore and her family begins: “Lore's father had been a successful inventor and businessman who owned a factory that produced household goods during WWII. He was also part of the underground movement that did not support Hitler. Lore had lived with her parents and two sisters in a section of Germany that became East Germany. She wanted to study and become an archaeologist as a child, but war can change your dreams. At the war's end, that area was administered brutally by the East German police, and a wall was built separating East from West Germany. As the oldest, Lore went to live for almost three years with her grandparents because they could get a food ration card if they had a child in the house.” Another story from : “Venezuela was the wealthiest country in South America. Pablo was born there, and his father was a very successful lawyer. Pablo's cousin fled from Communist Cuba ruled by Fidel Castro to Venezuela to be near him and his family and escape Communism. One year later in 1999, Hugo Chavez became the leader of Venezuela and began dismantling the capitalism that made the country wealthy with a thriving middle class. That cousin realized he had seen this “movie” before in Cuba and wanted no part in it. He decided to leave after only one year in Venezuela. He convinced Pablo to join him and come to the US, but Pablo's father mistakenly thought his status and wealth would continue, so he remained. Pablo now sends money to him every month to keep him from starving.”. Looking back and looking forward, Ron sees the U.S. at a cross roads. Which way will we go? When Ann's parents announced their move to an assisted living apartment, they gave her just two weeks to empty their three-story home filled with 56 years of memories. As she sorted through the items, Ann found herself confronting childhood memories and traumas that she had long buried. It was as if each item carried an energy of its own, triggering suppressed emotions and leading her to a near-death experience of introspection. Ann began journaling as a means of healing, courageously examining each memory and its impact on her self-esteem and relationships. This retrospection allowed her to rewrite old narratives and offer forgiveness to those involved in her past, including her paternal grandfather, whose two words, "sit down," had left a lasting impression of unworthiness on her young self. Through this process, Ann discovered the power of reframing memories and the importance of compassion and understanding. She shares how a trip to China inspired her to write a letter to her deceased grandfather, releasing it in a symbolic act of forgiveness and transformation. This act freed her from the emotional rejection she had carried for years. Ann's journey is not just about healing from the past but also about embracing creativity and perseverance. As a composer and musician, she channels her experiences into her art, finding joy and purpose in the creative flow. Mike Hassell was born into a family of engineers. He followed the expected path, earning his degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech. However, he soon realized that his education was narrowly focused on his profession, leaving little room for his broader interests in philosophy, humanities, and the arts. This realization led Mike to pivot his career towards publishing, focusing on the great ideas of history, including economics, philosophy, science, religion, and political thought. At around 40 years old, while working on a series about the moral problems of our age, Mike experienced a profound "aha" moment. He recognized that many of these issues—war on terrorism, drugs and alcohol, love and sexuality, abortion, and euthanasia—were not problems with clear-cut solutions. Instead, they were conflicts involving multiple truths that couldn't be realized simultaneously. This epiphany became the foundation for his book, "" which explores the inherent conflicts and choices we make without even realizing it. For instance, Mike discusses the trade-off between focus and sensitivity, using his own experience with his son's attention disorder to illustrate how different people navigate these conflicting aspects of attention. In this episode we touch upon various thought-provoking topics, including the balance between ideals and reality, the role of intuition in seeking truth, and the importance of personal relationships in resolving conflicts. Mike's insights remind us that life is full of complex, often conflicting choices, and understanding these deep trade-offs can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life. Mike's journey and his thoughtful reflections on life's moral and philosophical dilemmas offer valuable lessons for us all. This episode is about getting out of your comfort zone to realize your dreams, using the Oxcart Technique developed by Terry Fossum. The Oxcart Technique is based on the principles of prospect theory, developed by Kahneman and Tversky in 1979. This states that people are more motivated to avoid pain than to seek pleasure. Terry's method involves creating a failure scenario alongside a success scenario, thereby leveraging both positive and negative emotions to drive action. This dual approach ensures that individuals remain motivated even when the allure of positive outcomes is not enough. Where did this technique get its name? From a story about a farmer and an ox. How can the farmer motivate the ox to pull a cart? A carrot dangled in front of the ox provides motivation, assuming he's hungry. But if he's not, the ox needs an extra prod. A stick held by the farmer driving the ox and cart provides that motivation. And between the carrot and the stick lies motivation. Ready to take the first step to creating your own carrot and stick? Minding Your Mindset Gina Kunadian's story is one of childhood trauma, substance abuse, and transformation. It's also a story about how controlling our internal narrative also controls, and can rtansform, our life. Gina's family life was less than ideal. Her father died when she was young and she grew up with years of molestation. As a teen she started using the drug ecstasy. What started as a means to fit in and numb her pain descended into a dependency on alcohol that took over her life. By the time she was married and a mother, Gina's alcohol consumption had escalated to a point where she needed a fifth of vodka daily just to function. Despite multiple attempts at recovery, including outpatient programs and rehab, Gina's battle with alcohol seemed insurmountable. It wasn't until a moment of profound despair and a severe bout of pancreatitis that she truly confronted the reality of her situation. The stark warning from her doctor that continued drinking would lead to her death within ten years was the wake-up call she needed. Her mindset changed. Gina's path to recovery wasn't just about quitting alcohol; it was about transforming her entire mindset. With the help of a mentor, she delved into yoga, fitness, and a women's mentorship program focused on mindset. This holistic approach helped her rebuild her self-worth, change her limiting beliefs to create a new mindset, and cultivate a deep sense of self-love and compassion. Today, Gina is an alcohol-free sobriety coach dedicated to helping driven women break free from their alcohol dependency. Through her coaching and her podcast, “Shine Within,” she provides a platform for women to share their stories and find support in their journeys toward creating their own healing mindset. The conversation dives into various techniques, such as the “visual swish,” which involves replacing negative thoughts with empowering imagery, and the practice of peripheral vision to calm the nervous system.
