In this conversation, Carl Paoli and Jim Crowell discuss various topics related to the fitness industry and entrepreneurship. They cover the challenges faced by solo fitness professionals, the importance of finding a unique value proposition, and the metrics to consider for a business of one. They also explore the dynamics of the influencer space and the need to build promotional and owned channels for long-term success. The conversation explores the importance of building a marketing pipeline, the role of partnerships and competitive advantages in business growth, and the characteristics of a great owner-operator. It emphasizes the need for businesses to identify their unique value proposition and target market and the importance of reducing friction and understanding the business model. The conversation concludes by discussing making good investment decisions and the need to check biases. Takeaways Solo fitness professionals should optimize their business based on their current stage and focus on delivering value to their specific audience. Finding a unique value proposition is crucial for success. Narrowing down the target audience and delivering a specialized product or service can generate higher revenue. Metrics such as revenue per hour and product market fit are important for evaluating the performance of a business of one. Scaling a business of one requires careful consideration of the product or service offered and the target audience. Building both promotional and owned channels can lead to long-term success. Having a highly engaged and specific audience is more valuable than a large following in the influencer space. Building an owned channel and delivering a clear message can lead to monetization opportunities. Building a marketing pipeline is crucial for businesses to generate revenue and sell products. Partnerships can provide brand exposure and credibility, but aligning values and goals is important to ensure long-term success. Competitive advantages are unique qualities or assets that set a business apart from its competitors and are difficult to replicate. A great owner-operator can attract and inspire others, understand their business model, and know when to delegate tasks. Businesses should continuously evaluate their decisions, understand their target market, and check biases to make informed choices. Dave Durante is a former USA gymnast and current Coach and Entrepreneur in the Fitness space. In this podcast with Carl Paoli, Durante highlighted fundamental gymnastics movements, including creating good shapes, a strong core, and mobility while mastering handstands, rolling, and twisting. He explained how these movements are essential for gymnasts and transferable to general fitness and sports like CrossFit. Dave also dives into his experiences in gymnastics, his love for the sport, his challenges, and how he became the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness after retiring. Power Monkey Fitness provides training and education for gymnasts and athletes through their camps and online programs. Here are 9 main takeaways from the conversation: Fundamental movements are essential for gymnasts and transferable to general fitness and other sports. Good shapes, strong core, mobility, mastering handstands, rolling, and twisting are fundamental gymnastics movements. CrossFit and functional fitness has exposed gymnastics movements to the general population, allowing them to utilize tools to help with fitness goals. Training towards the highest level version of a movement, not just training towards a standard, facilitates technical progressions and builds towards a deeper understanding of movements. Some athletes are freaks of nature and can perform movements in specific technical ways due to their anatomy or unique abilities, which may not apply to the general population. Exposing people to gymnastics in CrossFit and functional fitness allows for a greater understanding of the sport. The history of sports and its regulations is essential to understand better and appreciate the evolution of the gymnastics applied movements. Although gymnastics is mainly an individual sport, pursuing it as a  team sport is the best route to finding success. When pursuing one's passions with dedication, finding balance in life is crucial to success. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/support

Due to accumulated stress, he suffered from debilitating Tinnitus, which made him re-think his entire approach to coaching. Navigating this chapter of his life has been emotional. Rather than suppressing or compartmentalizing his emotions, Carl chose to work with them to produce better results and redefine his approach to coaching through applied emotional intelligence, which he calls Emotional Fitness. The way he coaches people through developing Emotional Fitness has been through the INTERFACE Experience, which is a deep dive into self-mastery that involves four stages: expression, experimentation, integration, and transcendence. This week's show with Carl Paoli is about building a personal brand and driving your philosophies into what you put in the world. What excites me most about this conversation is the unspoken prerequisite for achieving the above: personal accountability and responsibility, aka complete ownership of our actions and choices. Carl is a world-class athlete – a gymnast who founded Gymnastics WOD and wrote the best-selling book Free+Style – and a world-class thinker and thought leader. After years of having Carl on our “guest wish list” we caught up with him in San Francisco for this epic conversation about bringing a heightened intention and awareness to everything we do: from movement to business, from marketing to leading. Enjoy. Show Notes: Episode #60 w/ Carl Paoli “If you have $1000 in the bank and don't know how to manage $1000, you have no business having $2000.” Finding clarity is key to understanding your stand and how to drive that through your life/business. Clarity takes time. Doing the reps is always going to be part of the process. Keep asking yourself the essential questions and act in your own best interests. “It's a never-ending story” Carl isn't creating a business to solve people's problems. He's creating a business that allows them to get to their solutions. Marketing strategies like a handstand picture have a bit of modern-day magic behind them. The magician reveals (some of) his secrets. We're all influencers. Influence yourself first and then put that self-work into action in your life and those around you. Entertainment means holding focus. Carl's freestyle philosophy works on reaching a point where you can accept and respect all styles. All ways of feeling and acting. The answers are in the book. The book is your body. Listen to what your body tells you. Listen to what strength means to Carl. What's the one lesson you'd teach your daughter? In this Episode, Carl Paoli talks to Artist Joanna Read, who believes art can awaken and transform the viewer and the creator into dreaming of a new reality. Joanna says that connecting with art- becoming present to, receiving, and noticing what an image, sound, poem, person, or place in nature elicits in the mind, body, and emotions as well as the act of expressing through art: utilizing art as a vehicle for practice, a tool for reprogramming false narratives and affirming a new inner reality through inspired action and devotional commitment, continue to be profoundly transformative anchor points within Joanna's life's emergence. Sharing Joanna's practice is an integral step in the cycle of creation: offering the fruits of these labors of love helps her knowledge-hungry mind find greater reverence and appreciation for a process rooted in a place that feels familiar yet not fully comprehendible. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I sat down with entrepreneur and Former Elite Gymnast, Carl Paoli, as we spoke about a range of fitness topics and their impact on longevity. We discussed aesthetic vs functional gymnastics and working through progressions. Carl also detailed his take on emotional fitness as the foundation for developing health and longevity.  Carl Paoli is a Swedish-American Life Teacher who grew up in Spain as an Elite gymnast, where even as a kid, his passion for physical activity led him to delve into action sports such as snowboarding and wakeboarding. It was gymnastics, however, that shaped his discipline for hard work, determination, and now his professional career. Throughout his career, he trained and competed on the national circuit for over fifteen years as an Elite Gymnast and achieved various honors, including a National Gold Medal for Vault. After retiring from gymnastics, Carl graduated with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche specializing in Genetic Engineering and Coral Reef Ecology. Afterward, he pursued a career in Marine Biology. Even though he found work relevant to his studies, his mind was never far from sports and fitness. It was Carl's entrepreneurial spirit that brought him back to the US in 2004 where he pursued his passion for coaching, led him to find CrossFit, and launched GymnasticsWOD in 2010. Together with Jami Tikkanen, he assisted in coaching Annie Thorisdottir to win back-to-back CrossFit Games titles in 2011 and 2012. Carl also became a member of the Ownership Group of STRIKE MVMNT, a footwear and apparel brand where he currently serves as their Global Ambassador. Shortly thereafter, he used his background in gymnastics and fitness to write his New York Times Bestselling book “Free+Style”.  Since the launch of GymnasticsWOD, Carl has virtually and physically coached thousands of athletes around the world through the website and by way of his Freestyle Connection seminars. He is also the founder of Freestyle Connection - a Media and Digital Learning company based in San Francisco, California established in 2012 dedicated to helping people design a life worth living through fitness and personal development.
