Part one features a thought-provoking conversation between José Bernardi, Associate Professor at ASU and author and editor of Adaptive Reuse in Latin America, and Fernando Luiz Lara, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Spatial Theories for the Americas: Counterweights to Five Centuries of Eurocentrism. Together, they explore the historical narrative of the European "encounter with" or better identified as the invasion of the Americas, challenging the misconception of an "empty land" or "new world"; a world without a history or culture; and examining the lasting impact of this narrative on the urban fabric, and architectural identity of Latin America. For many, here and now is as good as it gets - we have steadily progressed from a savage past, and all we have to look forward to is the great unknown. But if our literature and cinema are anything to go by, many are convinced that the future will indeed be dystopian. At the same time, arguments abound that living in the moment is a key to happiness and success. However, to privilege the present over the past or future, Brett Bowden argues in Now Is Not the Time: Inside Our Obsession with the Present (Iff Books, 2024), is to engage in tempocentrism. More than a mere preoccupation with the present, tempocentrism involves comparing and judging the past in relation to the present, with the tendency to assume that the present isn't only materially and qualitatively different from the past but also superior to it, often morally so. Yet tempocentrism, a mistaken belief in the unprecedented nature of events going on around us, brings with it a skewed perspective loaded with bias and prejudice. Requiring just as much ignorance and arrogance as Eurocentrism - tempocentrism implies that the present is somehow superior to the past because we live in it now. The point, however, is not to suggest that there is not something special about the present - there might well be - but now is not the time to decide whether it is more significant than previous moments, or those still to come. Reflections in Africology: A Journey Towards Afrocentricity Without Dismissing Postmodernism

In 2021, I began the Doctoral program in Liberal Studies at Georgetown University, where I completed the Foundations of Liberal Studies. The initial course, DLS 1, explored the history of humanity, beginning with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. While Homer briefly references Egypt and Africa, mentioning an "old man" as a source of stories, many Africologists, such as Professor Kimani Nehusi, author of Person and Personality, critique the omission of Africa's foundational role in the history of civilization. At Georgetown, the course left out any acknowledgment of Africa or ancient Egypt (Kemet) as part of the foundation of Western civilization. After meeting members of the Ausar Auset Society in Philadelphia, conducting an interview with them, and learning about Kemet I realized that my studies were not as accurate or inclusive of Africa's contributions. I embarked on research to uncover sources that place Africa at the foundation of human history, or at least prior to Greek civilization, which itself is influenced by African traditions and culture. Scholars like Dr. Ana Mazama, Chair of the Department of Africology at Temple University and author of The Afrocentric Paradigm, argue that what we know of ancient Egypt has been "bastardized" by the Eurocentric retelling of history, diluting the contributions of Kemet and Africa.I subsequently enrolled in the PhD program at Temple University, where I started courses in Africology and African American History, including African Civilizations, The Afrocentric Paradigm, and a Proseminar in Africology. The Afrocentric paradigm, like the Eurocentric one, begins with a people, place, culture, and the stories that give meaning to their lives, shaping lasting communities and advancing the progression of life. However, when we view history through an Afrocentric lens, the conflict is not merely class-based, as Marx described, but cultural. Afrocentrism challenges Eurocentric notions of humanity's origins, placing Africa at the center, and works to deconstruct and decolonize white supremacy and the idea that Eurocentrism is universal. Afrocentricity emphasizes agency, cultural dissemination, and economic empowerment while rejecting Marxism, postmodernism, and even Black nationalism.I disagree with the claim that postmodernism denies or rejects culture entirely. Instead, postmodernists argue that culture is not divine, natural, or universal, but rather, a reflection of human egos and experiences.So, where do we begin? According to Dr. Nehusi, the question "Who am I?" must start with Africa as the center, which means beginning with Kemet. However, I believe we must first begin with the Ultimate—God. For God is "that which nothing greater can be conceived or imagined," and He has revealed Himself to all humanity, as we are made in His image. In response, humanity creates civilization or culture, shaped by their context and environment. However, cultures—whether African, European, or Chinese—have often been privileged over one another, leading to revolutions or wars that impose and erase. This cultural domination has been particularly evident in the African experience, where European art, history, and values supplanted African ones, leading to what could be described as cultural genocide. Yet, as Dana Berry highlights in Price for Her Pound of Flesh, the African spirit has preserved its history, preventing total annihilation.God's revelations to humanity are not exclusive to any one group, and each culture's response to divine inspiration varies. And so, simply my existence is resisting that colonialism and the normalization of destruction and death of Palestinian bodies.” -Wafa “Translating lots of decolonial thought around the canon and Eurocentrism and what shapes our ideas of art and design is really crucial to understand how we then deconstruct the canon. Building off of our last episode, we question – what are the biggest challenges we still face and how can we work toward more transformation?  We learn from one of our guests that this focus and lens on decolonising fashion where marginalization and othering is built into the foundation, is very different to the offerings of cultural preservation, which holistically exists to share lived experience, pass over craft practice, history, culture and honor the hands and bodies of the people at the center of this. As our guest shares, what else is there if we cannot honor the people preserving culture. Developing Africa? New Horizons with Afrocentricity (Anthem Press, 2024) is written for those who are interested in theoretical debates as they relate to the field of Development Studies. It is aimed at academics and all those who work in the field of development, politicians, policy-makers and civil servants who need to familiarize themselves with key historical development debates, especially those relevant to Africa. The book takes an Afrocentric intellectual standpoint, grounded in the theory of Afrocentricity, in its interrogation of the idea and processes of development in Africa. It also adopts an historical approach in its interrogation of the idea of African development as a by-product of political deliberations. This book is about how the discourse of development as a field of study needs to be re-oriented towards African-based epistemologies to dismantle coloniality, in opposition to the historical embeddedness of development discourse in Eurocentrism. This book contests the limitation of the modern African understanding of Africa's journey with development to the period of the aftermath of World War II, to be specific, to President Harry S. Truman's 1949 Point Four programme. Instead, the book argues that, that journey should be understood holistically. By this, I mean that Africa's engagement with development did not begin with the politics of the Euro-North American political bloc – the story of African development must take into consideration Africa's classical civilization, namely, the Nile Valley civilization and its contributions to human civilization. Such an approach provides a more holistic interrogation and casts light on how Africa's history of greatness continues to be an inspiration even in modern times. Such an approach rejects the many reductionist lies and half-truths that undergird the modernist paradigm which seeks to portray African people as dependent beneficiaries of the colonial Euro-modernity framework. This framework has undermined the humanity of non-Western people in general, and Africans in particular. The book pursues the tradition of decolonial epistemic reflections grounded on Afrocentricity as its theoretical thrust to oppose discourses that are riddled with a racist agenda towards those in the Global South, especially in Africa to enable endogeneity. In the spirit of the pursuit for cognitive justice in the 21st century, this book argues that the discourse of development must be decolonized from hegemonic Eurocentric propaganda and needs to be framed from the viewpoint of those who have been seen as being on the receiving end, those projected as “backwards” from a Eurocentric perspective. This event launched 'Dismantling Green Colonialism: Energy and Climate Justice in the Arab Region' edited by Hamza Hamouchene and Katie Sandwell, published by Pluto Press. The Arab region is a focus of world politics, with authoritarian regimes, significant fossil fuel reserves and histories of colonialism and imperialism. It is also the site of potentially immense green energy resources. The writers in this collection explore a region ripe for energy transition, but held back by resource-grabbing and (neo)colonial agendas. They show the importance of fighting for a just energy transition and climate justice - exposing policies and practices that protect global and local political elites, multinational corporations and military regimes. Covering a wide range of countries from Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria and Tunisia to Egypt, Sudan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Palestine, this book challenges Eurocentrism and highlights instead a class-conscious approach to climate justice that is necessary for our survival. Meet the speakers Hamza Hamouchene is Programme Coordinator for North Africa at the Transnational Institute (TNI). He is a London-based Algerian researcher-activist, commentator and a founding member of Algeria Solidarity Campaign (ASC), and Environmental Justice North Africa (EJNA). He is the author/editor of two books: 'The Struggle for Energy Democracy in the Maghreb' (2017) and 'The Coming Revolution to North Africa: The Struggle for Climate Justice' (2015). Katie Sandwell is Programme Coordinator at the Transnational Institute (TNI). She coordinates and supports work at TNI on a range of issues related to climate, environmental and agrarian justice; public alternatives; energy democracy; land and territories; fair trade medicinal plants; agroecology and food sovereignty. Michael Mason is Director of the Middle East Centre. At LSE, he is also Professor of Environmental Geography in the Department of Geography and Environment and an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute for Climate Change and the Environment. He is interested in ecological politics and governance as applied to questions of accountability, security and sovereignty. This research addresses both global environmental politics and regional environmental change in Western Asia/the Middle East.

In this latest podcast, I present a recent article published in The NeoLiberal Journals entitled: Embracing Diversity in Spiritual Interpretation. The article is also part of my reflections from my Doctoral studies at Georgetown University looking at Power, Privilege, Position and Status, and the Foundations of Knowledge and Hegemony of Faith. Further, we are conducting a study on changing attitudes towards Afro-Caribbean beliefs. This is important to the discussions concerning diversity which must begin with interfaith unity and how we interpret divine revelation. In Western societies and especially in the Americas there has always been this penchant to promote Eurocentrism which was always part of the center. Indigenous or African practices inherited from Africans and traditions of the ancient Indians have been demonized within Christendom. However, It is a privileged language that promotes a cultural religion that denies diversity and limits the immutability and transcendence of God who speaks all languages. I began the article like this: In a world filled with diverse beliefs and interpretations of religious texts, it is crucial to foster interfaith unity, understanding, and acceptance rather than judgment and condemnation. There are those who assert that certain practices, such as the prohibitions against adultery or fornication, should be universally condemned based on interpretations of Hebrew scriptures and prophetic authority. However, it is important to recognize that such methods of exegesis and biblical interpretation can be both inaccurate and misleading. Welcome to our final class in Caribbean Theology. Today, we will review some essential aspects and prepare for the upcoming examination. Let's begin the review. Caribbean theology, as we have explored, involves the study and contemplation of divine and religious beliefs within the context of the Caribbean region, with its diverse cultures and histories. It is important to recognize that Caribbean theology encompasses more than just African ancestry. We also find influences from various other cultures, such as East Indian, Chinese, and indigenous communities. Understanding this diversity enriches our perspective. One of the key goals of Caribbean theology is to encourage and reclaim cultural identity. By integrating elements of African and Caribbean spirituality, we can reconnect with our indigenous beliefs and practices that were marginalized during the colonial era. This process fosters a sense of pride and self-determination among Caribbean communities and challenges the dominance of Eurocentrism in theological discourse. Black liberation theology, which emerged as a response to racial oppression in the United States, has also influenced Caribbean theology. The movement of the United Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.) and the rise of Rastafari during the Great Depression had significant impacts on the development of Caribbean theology. These interconnected movements of the global South and North show the symbiotic relationship between oppressed communities worldwide. Critical thinking plays a crucial role in Caribbean theology, enabling us to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information and ideas objectively. Through critical thinking, we can better understand history and its interpretation, acknowledging the various influences that have shaped our theological perspectives. As we approach the examination, I encourage you to focus on the themes we discussed in class. You will be asked to answer two questions out of a selection of seven. The questions cover topics like the role of Caribbean theology in encouraging cultural identity, the significance of black liberation theology, the challenge of Christian missions in the Caribbean, and the importance of faith in advocating for justice and equality. Remember, Caribbean theology is not just an academic exercise but a means to empower ourselves and our communities. Let us continue our exploration and interpretation of religious concepts, beliefs, and practices, keeping in mind the rich tapestry of our Caribbean heritage. For Caribbean Theology, transcending culture does not mean negating its roots or cultural identity but rather engaging in a critical dialogue that draws from its cultural heritage while also addressing the challenges and opportunities of the present. This approach empowers Caribbean communities to reclaim their narratives, interpret scriptures through their contexts, and construct theology that resonates with their lived experiences. It also encourages a more meaningful and relevant engagement with spiritual and religious practices, enabling a greater sense of ownership and connection to faith. Ultimately, a dynamic and open-minded theology that recognizes the importance of culture can contribute to the spiritual well-being and empowerment of Caribbean communities. Jeffrey critiques the lackadaisical approach US institutions take towards Spanish language content and research and makes a strong argument to follow the Puerto-Rican model which sees greater opportunity, equality, and sophistication in multilingual academic research. About his book: Despite a pronounced shift away from Eurocentrism in Spanish and Hispanic studies departments in US universities, many implicit and explicit vestiges of coloniality remain firmly in place. While certain national and linguistic expressions are privileged, others are silenced with predictable racial and gendered results.  Decolonizing American Spanish: Eurocentrism and the Limits of Foreignness in the Imperial Ecosystem (U Pittsburgh Press, 2022) challenges not only the hegemony of Spain and its colonial pedagogies, but also the characterization of Spanish as a foreign language in the United States. By foregrounding Latin American cultures and local varieties of Spanish and reconceptualizing the foreign as domestic, Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera works to create new conceptual maps, revise inherited ones, and institutionalize marginalized and silenced voices and their stories. Considering the University of Puerto Rico as a point of context, this book brings attention to how translingual solidarity and education, a commitment to social transformation, and the engagement of student voices in their own languages can reinvent colonized education. What does it mean to be a white supremacist? What does the term ”the West” mean, and how is it different from simply the geographical designation Europe? On this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib discusses the cultural and genetic origins of Europeans, how they have been viewed over the last few thousand years and how they have viewed themselves. Starting around 3000 BC, when the first Yamnaya men were expanding out of the Pontic steppe and assimilating the Neolithic Globular Amphora culture of eastern Poland, and going down to the 20th century when the nations of the world were cleaved between those aligned with the Soviet Union versus those aligned with the USA, Razib addresses when conceptions of European, Western and white self-identity could have emerged, and indeed did emerge. Were the Classical Greeks white supremacists? Did the Spaniards impose European hegemony on the New World? And when did the West outpace the rest?
