Another hot inflation reading this week underscores the importance of the US Federal Reserve's campaign to tame decades-high increases in consumer prices, with many market observers evoking the memory of a similar effort by the central bank's larger-than-life former chairman, Paul Volcker. One key to Volcker's success in the 1980s, achieved through interest-rate hikes and control of the money supply, was setting the appropriate expectations in the financial markets, according to Christine Harper, editor of Bloomberg Markets magazine and co-author of Volcker's memoirs, Keeping at It: The Quest for Sound Money and Good Government. Harper joined the latest episode of What Goes Up to discuss her experience with Volcker, and what lessons learned from his time as Fed chief are useful today.   “Psychology was really important,” she said. “He really understood the psychology of investors, the psychology of consumers and business people. And so much of what he did, and the inflation fight, was basically around changing the psychology.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 12, 2020) – The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on colleges and universities across the country, and while current students have been severely affected, prospective students are also suffering due to limitations on taking the standardized ACT or SAT tests for admission. As the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s flagship, land-grant institution, UK is doing everything possible to insure that access to higher education is simpler for future students. For the 2021-22 academic year admissions cycle, the University of Kentucky will be test-optional, meaning students can apply without a test score. “We ran our data here at the University of Kentucky, and it paired very well with the national data” says Christine Harper, UK’s Associate Vice-President for Student Success and Chief Enrollment Officer, “finding that GPA is a better indication of student success and retention.” On this episode of Behind the Blue, Harper is joined by Asia Payne, UK’s Assistant Director of Academic Scholarships to talk about what test-optional means for prospective students, the range of scholarships available, the continuing availability of campus tours, and more. Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman who died this week at age 92, was an imposing public figure—in height as well as stature. He was best known for his bold moves in the U.S. war against inflation, and for his dedication to public service. But there was more to the man, as Bloomberg Markets editor Christine Harper discovered as she worked with Volcker to co-write his 2018 memoir, “Keeping At It.” Harper joins host Stephanie Flanders to share her memories and observations of Volcker’s humor, hobbies and patience. Also this week, Stephanomics explores what’s ailing India, which this year lost its title as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Moreover, any chance of regaining that crown looks like it’s slipping away, despite the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One reason: The gem and jewelry industry, which accounts for almost 7% of India’s economy, is suffering thanks to external forces like the U.S.-China trade war as well as a possible setback from the Indian government itself. Anirban Nag reports from Mumbai on the sector, while Flanders digs deeper into the Modi agenda with Bloomberg economist Abhishek Gupta.
