How does Jake Boss help his players develop the invaluable skill of empathy?Unfortunately, most people equate effective coaching with technical knowledge. We assume that coaches that played at the highest level are the best coaches. Nothing could be further from the truth. Coaching is an art form. The best coaches have the ability to communicate honestly and deliver instruction that sticks. My guest, Jake Boss, is the head baseball coach at my alma mater Michigan State University. Like me, Jake wanted to play baseball for the Spartans, but was unable too. However, today he coaches at the highest level of collegiate baseball because of his ability to teach the game and lead young men.In this bonus remix episode, Coach Boss discusses the complex subject of empathy. In my view, the best coaches help their young players put themselves in others' shoes - their coaches, their teammates, their parents. Coaching in any sport is about preparing young athletes for what's next in life, not just wins and losses. So, what was your biggest takeaway from my conversation with Jake Boss? For me, it's that teaching empathy for others is a staple of good coaching. Athletes may not always like their coaches or the things that they do. However, being able to appreciate WHY coaches do what they do is critical to forging a trusting and constructive relationship between coach and player. My suggestion to young athletes is simply to keep an open mind. Keeping an open mind is fully within one's control. You may not like the things that others say or do, but keeping an open mind will give you the opportunity to learn something new that will make you a better athlete and more importantly, a better person.I want to thank Jake for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. To learn more about how mental performance coaching can help your mind work FOR you rather than AGAINST you, visit https://michaelvhuber.com.Thank you for listening. We'll see you back in two weeks ready to get better!

Matthew Bousson (@boussytheboss) is a great friend and mentor of mine newly relocated to San Diego California. He's accomplished nearly all there is as far as S&C coaching in high level sports having worked with athletes in the UFC, NFL, pro rugby and NCAA. He is also a legit scientist at one point working towards a PhD. We previously recorded an episode last year that has some more background on Coach Boss, which you can find here: Spotify, Apple, Google Podcasts.Matt is now moving on from full time coaching and beginning to work towards a career in architecture. And at the same time, he's working on #ProjectHeros. The Project Heros mission is to raise funds and awareness for various charities and organizations dedicated to improving health & wellness and to inspire millions around the world to live healthier lifestyles along the way. Matt will be training to compete in the GODZone adventure race in New Zealand in 2023. All the while displaying his own training to get there, and going from being an “off-the-couch ZERO, to an Adventure Athlete HERO” in 12 months. Never being able to totally leave fitness and health in the past, Matt hopes to find ways to use architecture to improve health and wellbeing. Whether it be the way cities are designed, buildings are constructed, or whatever the case may be, he's looking to make an impact on health using architecture. Throughout the episode we also spoke about some of the behind-the-scenes stuff – both good and bad – related to the world of professional sport and fitness, as well as some insights into the way scientific research is conducted. Many of these things led Matt to deciding to drop his PhD research, and I think you'll find some of the reasons why rather surprising. To keep up with everything Matthew Bousson has going on, follow him on IG. To check out more details, get involved, and donate to Project Heros, you can check out the website here. The very first guest on the podcast is my friend and mentor Matthew Bousson aka Coach Boss (@boussytheboss). He's travelled all over and worked with some of the best athletes and programs in the world. From Stanford University to UFC champions he's worked with the best of the best and brings all of that knowledge and experience into who he is today working with many non-pro athletes like you and I. We spoke about many things but the main topic underlying everything was the differences and similarities between athletes and the general population. We're all humans first, and so you must coach the human before you coach the athlete, lawyer, or parent. Social media as we know is a blessing and curse for delivering information and this couldn't be more relevant within the world of health and fitness, and so we spoke a bit about how to evaluate things you see online. As well as talking about the trouble with trying to copy what athletes and influencers are doing without knowing all the details. We also touched on Matt's experiences in academia and where there is a gap between the classroom and the real world. Matt is currently living in Hermosa Beach, California. If you're in the area definitely hit him up on Instagram @boussytheboss or if you've got anything else you'd want to ask him. He's a wealth of knowledge and experience and always a pleasure to talk to. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes.
