As we prepare to move into August, and a new academic and athletic season, we need to stop and look back at the past 12 months and all the great things that have happened in North Carolina Tar Heels' athletics. It's impossible to narrow it all down, but host Isaac Schade gives you his top three moments plus several honorable mentions. Number three on the list is the UNC baseball team's season turnaround, culminating in a conference tournament championship and a regional championship before falling to Arkansas in the Super Regional. Super freshman Vance Honeycutt and friends took us all on an amazing ride. Number two is the women's lacrosse national championship, spearheaded by superstar Jamie Ortega. The ladies overcame losing in the Final Four in each of the previous three tournaments, including a phenomenal comeback over Northwestern in the semifinal. Number one (and perhaps the biggest no-brainer ever) is the victory over Duke in the Final Four, ending Coach K's career. The performance from Carolina's Iron Five of RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Brady Manek, and Armando Bacot, which propelled first-year head coach Hubert Davis to the national championship in his inaugural season was something no one will ever forget. The honorable mention moments include Austin Greaser making the Masters, Kizhan Clarke's national runner-up finish in wrestling, the women's tennis team's three-peat in the ITA indoor national championships, women's basketball's NCAA Tournament victory over Arizona AT Arizona, the victory over Duke on Senior night, and the women's lacrosse comeback against Northwestern in the semifinals. We celebrate with the rest of the Hotty Toddy Nation for the first College World Series title for the Ole Miss Rebels! We look back on a season that saw the Rebs achieve a No. 1 ranking at the beginning of the SEC slate of schedule then saw them plummet to the bottom of the SEC and then have to go on a serious run at end of regular season just to be the last at-large team to make the regionals. Bianco's boys then got super hot running through old familiar foe Arizona who ended their season last season in winning the Miami regional to traveling to instate rival Southern Miss and winning a road Super Regional and in the process shutting out the Golden Eagles. Finally, we recap how the Rebs ran roughshod through Omaha taking out Auburn, Arkansas in a best 2/3 masterpiece and finally winning it all in back-to-back wins over Oklahoma including a Game 1 win that saw back-back-back HRs! The episode opens with some baseball chatter — including a breakdown of antagonistic fan bases in the SEC in light of Tennessee’s Super Regional exit — and closes with a look at Jabari Smith’s growing odds to become the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.Follow Justin (@JFergusonAU) and Painter (@paintsharpless) on Twitter. If you’re receiving this free podcast episode and would like to upgrade to a paid subscription that gives you access to all stories and premium podcast episodes, subscribe using the button below or clicking this link.Photo Credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn Athletics This is a public episode.
