Intracranial recordings reveal three distinct neural response patterns in the language network

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.30.522216v1?rss=1 Authors: Regev, T. I., Casto, C., Hosseini, E. A., Adamek, M., Brunner, P., Fedorenko, E. Abstract: A left-lateralized network of frontal and temporal brain regions is specialized for language processing-spoken, written, or signed. Different regions of this 'language network' have all been shown to be sensitive to various forms of linguistic information, from combinatorial sentence structure to word meanings, to sub-lexical regularities. However, whether neural computations are the same across and within these different brain regions remains debated. Here, we examine responses during language processing recorded intracranially in patients with intractable epilepsy. Across two datasets (Dataset 1: n=6 participants, m=177 language-responsive electrodes; Dataset 2: n=16 participants, m=362 language-responsive electrodes), we clustered language-responsive electrodes and found three distinct response profiles, with differences in response magnitude between linguistic conditions (e.g., sentences vs. lists of words), different temporal dynamics over the course of the stimulus, and different degrees of stimulus locking. We argue that these profiles correspond to different temporal receptive windows that vary in size between sub-lexical units and multi-word sequences. These results demonstrate the functional heterogeneity of neural responses in the language network and highlight the diversity of neural computations that may be needed in order to extract meaning from linguistic input. Importantly, electrodes that exhibit these distinct profiles do not cluster spatially and are instead interleaved across frontal and temporal language areas, which likely made It difficult to uncover functional differences in past fMRI studies. This mosaic of neural responses across the language network suggests that all language regions have direct access to distinct response types-a property that may be crucial for the efficiency and robustness of language processing mechanisms. Welcome to the League! We are joined by the entrancing frontwoman, Anna Brunner, also the founder of heavy metal's latest attraction, League Of Distortion. Anna joins IUF to talk about her newest passion that is setting up for quite the first chapter for this band. Full of a mix between bands like Otep, Linkin Park, and In This Moment – League Of Distortion takes it to a whole new breed of nu-metal that fans will never see coming. Anna starts things off with the origins of the band, which include combining her talents with guitarist Jim Müller of Kissin Dynamite, bassist Felix Rehmann, and drummer Tino Calmbach. The group have formed a chemistry that only seemed to make sense to move forward together, and that includes their debut self-titled album. Anna also briefly talks about her previous band, Exit Eden, and how taking that experience into a new group can serve as an advantage. As the production of the debut album is broken down throughout this episode, fronting a band like League Of Distortion has allowed Anna to tap into an almost 6th sense of musicality that she may not have been able to reach with any other group. So much more than what is seen on the surface of a band that possesses all the potential to go up from here, from songwriting, influences, and impactful themes. Tune in now to our conversation with Anna, and be sure to buy and stream the self-titled debut record from League Of Distortion, out now worldwide via Napalm Records.Stay connected with League Of Distortion, visit: https://label.napalmrecords.com/league-of-distortion, https://www.instagram.com/leagueofdistortion/ and https://www.facebook.com/leagueofdistortion/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

On today's episode, Kunle is joined by Tray Brunner, Co-Founder & CEO of Bamboo Avenue, a sustainable athleisure brand, and Vybe Interior, an interior design company focusing on promoting local canvas art. Traveling was not one of Tray's bucket lists but when he took an opportunity to study in Bangkok, his life changed forever. His life was not an easy one but it became a foundation of his leadership that later on would become material in establishing his businesses. His eyes were opened to different perspectives in life as he traveled while his heart found its better half, Mariah, who also is his business partner. Growing two seven-figure businesses, Tray managed to figure out what he needs to do by making sure he understands and tests his data. He combines his passion along with his experience working at Facebook and knowledge of DPA, Dynamic Product Ads. He is keen on ensuring that Bamboo Avenue products are truly of quality and sustainable, and not greenwashing. His other business, Vybe Interior, is partnering with artists from different countries by getting exclusive rights, and curating original canvas artworks that may soon become a household name. It's an encouraging episode as you'd hear Kunle and Tray talk about his journey in life and what led him to start his own business, his insights in scaling and expanding a business, and his top tips for dealing with recession head-on. This is an episode for everyone, whether for someone who wants to start a new business, grow their own business or add another one.-----------SPONSORS:This episode is brought to you by:KlaviyoThis episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. Hi guys,Long time no show...I know, I know!!!This is one of my favorite shows yearly as we talk about September 19th: "Talk Like A Pirate Day"Rob and Erica Brunner always join us for this show and you maybe be asking why if you ever listen to this show yearly??Well, first off Rob is a Lieutenant Commander of the Canadian Royal Navy (ok that qualifies him for sure), and he is also part of a pirate society association of Canada that does pirate re-enactments and show across the country (ok, now he is very qualified)!!! So I know this show is usually longer than our normal show but when I start talking about pirates then just like Rob and Erica do; I can go on for hours!!! So, we do have a pirate themed drink for you this show called the "the French Pirate" cocktail. We used this drink for several reasons: 1) Cointreau and brandy are related to the French community and of course to piracy on ships,       2) tiki ingredient of Falernum is being used so that is a plus      3) Pusser's rum which was the British navy's rum given out to sailors on ships as rations is again another plusYes, I did tweak the original recipe but come on it's me....I'll post both the original recipe and the tweaked version for you on our website so check them out and get a stiiirrrring!! Eye!!So with Rob and Erica's expertise we discuss words or phrases that would be used on the ships during the pirate era. We discuss their crew the " Cut N Run" which travels to different events and educates and entertains crowds on piracy and the hardships they went through. Erica goes into detail about hardships and myths that maybe given pirates the glamourous life we think they might have had but was not so. Rob discusses some of the rums around the world he has come across and transporting those back to Canada. Yes, I have mentioned on previous shows about travelling and rum....Links to the show:Recipes: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/recipes-page-2/Pirate magazine (Rob writes articles for and very informative: magazine is in English and French): https://fliphtml5.com/homepage/gybp?fbclid=IwAR35t1nqRCoTjksgPSa-lT3KN5ZvLSbkuA_OFdZDdy8s-5K8VbvP2PKRe1MCut N Run Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CutAndRunPiratesCut N Run videos FB: https://www.facebook.com/CutAndRunPirates/videosPirate Website: https://mftproduction.wixsite.com/festivaldespiratresOh bonus YouTube video: rum knowledge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4BFb5sknGY

“John Smale pushed the company to have a deeper ear toward what consumers really want. He made a greater effort to take a listen.” Janet Reid and Gordon Brunner are two P&G Alumni who had the privilege of coming up at the company during John Smale's rise in leadership at P&G. Janet Reid is Founder, CEO and Managing Partner of BRBS World, but spent 10 years as an early African American brand manager at P&G, from 1980 to 1990. And Gordon Brunner - a familiar guest on this podcast - was P&G's former Chief Technical Officer, and one of the company's most renowned R&D executives - and the first R&D'er to sit on the company's Board. Both have a lot to share about the purpose-inspired, caring, yet demanding and principled leader that was John Smale. For this month's podcasts, we'll be hearing reflections from leaders on John Smale, P&G's former Chairman & CEO, who led P&G from 1981-1990, and served as General Motors' Chairman from 1992-1995. These conversions are in honor o f the new book "Here Forever: The Timeless Impact of John Smale on Procter & Gamble, General Motors, and the Purpose and Practice of Business" (by Rob Garver), available now. While John Smale passed away in 2011 - he is arguably one the most influential leaders of the modern era, growing P&G more than six-fold in his tenure. And yet, Smale is largely unknown to many leaders guiding American and global businesses today. John's leadership in developing a vision for corporate purpose was decades ahead of its time. This was a book years in the making by not just the author, but many of some of the biggest leaders in business. “Here Forever” is a compelling and insightful read we'd highly recommend, and will make a great holiday gift for the admired, or aspiring leaders in your life. A Mosaic of CourageI remember September 11, 2001, like it was yesterday. I remember exactly where I was when I turned on the television to watch the morning news anchors on ABC7 in Manhattan. They were telling us that we were indeed under a terrorist attack and that we should get out of Manhattan if we could. Things were happening so rapidly that even as the news anchors issued those dire words, their instructions became obsolete as all traffic in and out of The City came to a grinding halt. Not knowing what to do, I joined the thousands of workers being evacuated from high rise office buildings all over the city and got swept up into the teeming masses of people flooding the streets of Midtown, Uptown and Downtown. The East Side and the West Side. From Battery Park to Washington Heights. My friend Cheryl Rogers later told me that she had walked from her office in Chelsea all the way to the Brooklyn Bridge and crossed over on foot to get home to her cat Cookie. In the days that followed, we New Yorkers, like the rest of the world remained inside, glued to the television. I watched the local News One a lot those first few days, and ABC7, because they were giving us the local, inside scoop. And we needed practical information – like where to go to get food and water. And where people could go to get information on the missing and the dead. On that day, Liz Brunner sat at the anchor desk at ABC-TV, WCVB NewsCenter 5 in Boston, MA - that city's top-rated newscast. Liz was the voice of reason, calm and a face that Bostonians all knew they could trust to tell them what was happening. The facts. 12 years later, on April 15, 2013, she would assume the seat at the anchor desk again, as this time terror visited the city of Boston directly with the Boston Marathon Bombing, and the chase for the bombers that ensued in the following days. When she talks about both events, her journalistic resolve melts as her eyes soften. The humanity of the person shines through. It was that tangible humanity that drew viewers to her during her 28-year career in front of the camera. It is that humanity that draws people to her today in her role of executive communications coach for people looking to raise their lives and their careers to the next level of success, or is it greatness? To sit in the anchor desk with integrity and hold the emotions and expectations of a city or a nation is not easy work. It is the work of the courageous. Courage is a word that comes up often in my conversation with Liz because it is a guiding principle of her life and the many lives she has lived: reporter and anchor, teacher, professional singer, and now entrepreneur. That courageousness has come to her from her ancestors, some who crossed over on the Mayflower and some who lived on the distant continent of India. Both meet in her, creating a legacy that is both improbable and at the same time wholly American. Her thoughts on the rich mosaic of her life? They are found in her latest book Dare to Own You. Every leap of faith in your life takes tremendous courage. Every new chapter that you write for yourself requires you not to be afraid. Vulnerability is an earned gift that you bestow to others, not something to be frivolously given away. State Supreme Court Candidate Spotlight - Season 3, Episode 7Ohio's lingering redistricting fight has clearly shown that who sits on the Ohio Supreme Court matters. And beyond redistricting, the Ohio Supreme Court justices also make important decisions on major issues that impact public education, educators and students. That's why OEA members have recommended Justice Jennifer Brunner, Judge Terri Jamison, and Judge Marilyn Zayas for election to three open seats on Ohio's highest court this fall. They introduced themselves to members at a Member Activist Forum last spring.MORE | OEA Members can learn more about the OEA Member-recommended candidates on the ballot in their community by visiting Ohioballot.com. As a trial court judge Brunner founded the county's adult felony drug court, known as the TIES (Treatment is Essential to Success) Program, now in operation for more than18 years. She was elected Ohio's first woman Secretary of State on November 7, 2006, and held the office for four years. While in that office, she became the first Ohioan to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award from the bipartisan board of the JFK Library and Museum in Boston. Justice Brunner was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2010.  She has 17 years of private law practice experience and has provided rule of law technical expertise to the government of the Republic of Serbia, election observation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and rule of law instruction at the bar association of Sri Lanka through the U.S. state department (USAID), as well as provided remote technical training through the American Bar Association (ABA) to the Republic of Kazakhstan, and in August 2022, in-person assistance to the Republic of Benin's Human Rights Commission.  She has gained a deep understanding of the importance of a strong and well-functioning judiciary to preserving peace and growing democracy through the rule of law.  A native of Springfield, Ohio, Justice Brunner has been married to Rick Brunner since 1978.  They have 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren, 3 dogs and 2 cats and spend time at their home in Columbus and at their farm in Columbiana County in Northeast Ohio. Judge Marilyn Zayas, candidate for Ohio Supreme Court Associate Justice https://judgemarilynzayas.com/ Judge Marilyn Zayas learned from an early age that everyone should be treated fairly and equally. This is a core belief and guides Marilyn in her personal and professional life. She was born in Spanish Harlem and grew up in a tough New York City neighborhood. Although she earned a college degree in computer science and moved to Cincinnati to become an IT Manager for Proctor & Gamble, Marilyn always dreamed of becoming a lawyer. After six years, in 1994, Marilyn left P&G and pursued her dream, enrolling in and then graduating with a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1997. In addition to realizing her dream, Marilyn also knew she had found a wonderful home in Ohio where she could raise her children. She went to work serving her community and eventually built her own law firm representing everyone from the poor to millionaires to refugees. Throughout her career, she never lost sight of her passion for justice. In 2016, Marilyn was elected to the First District Court Of Appeals of Ohio. She was proud to know she was the only Latina judge on any district court of appeals in the state. Her reputation for fairness grew. Her commitment to faithfully apply the law and the constitution was recognized by her peers. So Judge Zayas was asked to sit in on cases as a visiting judge on the Second, Sixth, Eighth and Tenth District Courts of Appeals. Judge Zayas was also selected by the Ohio Supreme Court's Chief Justice to be a sitting judge on the Ohio Supreme Court for a recused justice. In 2022, Judge Zayas decided to run for the Ohio Supreme Court.Judge Marilyn Zayas's family includes her three adult children and two adopted rescue dogs, Thor and Sparkle Lou. Judge Terri Jamison, candidate for Ohio Supreme Court Associate Justice https://www.votejudgejamison.com/ Judge Terri Jamison's journey from the coal fields of West Virginia to the highest reaches of the legal profession is a testament to her strength, intelligence, perseverance, and persistence. Judge Jamison worked as one of the few women in the underground coal mines, made Columbus her home, later opened and ran her own insurance agency for over 16 years, and attended college while working full time. Terri sold her agency and enrolled in the Capital University School of Law and obtained her Juris Doctorate in 2004. As an attorney, Terri worked in the Franklin County Public Defender's Office representing indigent clients in the Municipal Court System and served as a Hearing Officer for the Ohio Unemployment Compensation Review Commission. She practiced in the US District Court, Southern District of Ohio. She opened her own law office, practicing Criminal, Juvenile, Domestic Relations, and Probate law at the trial and appellate level. She was admitted to practice at the Supreme Court of the United States in 2007. In 2012, she was elected judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, Division of Domestic Relations and Juvenile Branch. She was overwhelmingly reelected to the Common Pleas bench in 2018 and then elected to the Tenth District Court of Appeals in 2020. During her time on the bench, Judge Jamison has used her experience, perspective, talent, and knowledge to develop new strategies to empower families. She also devoted considerable time, energy, and attention to issues related to equal access to justice, diversity, inclusion, and the need to develop alternatives to detention for juveniles. Along with her many other accomplishments, Judge Jamison is most proud of being a spouse to Ricardo “Ty” Gary, a retired Franklin County Deputy Sheriff who has started a new career as a realtor with E-Merge Realty. Their blended family includes three sons, Tremayne, Demetrius, and Sean, seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. She is the author of the book Dare to Own You: Taking Your Authenticity and Dreams Into Your Next Chapter, which  Forbes described as a teaching memoir.  Liz says she's in the fourth chapter of her career. She grew up in a family that was very involved in music, performing in her church choir and with her family in front of their congregation. Liz attended Lawrence University's Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, became a high school music teacher, and sang semi-professionally for a time. After a few years of teaching, Liz felt there was something else she was supposed to do. While working a retail job to pay the bills, she considered many career options by reading books and taking self-assessments. Then, one day she bravely cold-called the NBC and CBS affiliates in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois,  where she had been living, to request informational interviews. It took about six months of conversations, but one of the stations actually created a role for Liz. The rest, as they say, is history. Thus began Liz's career in communications and TV news broadcasting. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Liz's journey: Liz won the title of Miss Illinois in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant in 1979. This enabled her to pay for her college education, a proud achievement. She was the only Boston reporter to land an exclusive interview with President Barack Obama in the White House. In Edible-Alpha® podcast #120, Andy sits down with Cliff McConville, founder of All Grass Farms northwest of Chicago. The diversified ag operation provides raw A2 milk, 100% grass-fed beef, pastured pork, organic vegetables, and free-range turkeys, broiler chickens, and eggs, all sold at the onsite farm store or online. After working in the insurance business in Chicago for 25 years, Cliff's last job allowed him to work from home. Now with more free time, he and his partner Anna purchased a suburban horse farm. Soon the documentary Food Inc., Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, and Joel Salatin's You Can Farm sparked his intrigue in small-scale regenerative farming, so in 2011, he gave it a go on their 8.5 acres. Cliff loved the work and realized it could become a small business, so in 2012, they started selling grass-fed and pastured proteins out of their house. Customers asked for raw A2 milk, which was not on Cliff's radar, but once he researched its benefits, he became a devotee. They bought two Guernsey cows, got licensed to sell raw milk, secured liability insurance, and added the in-demand product to their mix. With business booming, Cliff and Anna needed to increase production, so they leased 20 acres of pastureland near their home. Needing even more pastureland and ideally a dairy barn, they found exactly what they were looking for in the Brunner Family Forest Preserve, a picturesque property along a busy suburban highway. After 18 months of negotiations, they worked out a unique 25-year lease. The forest preserve invested $200,000 to restore the historic dairy barn's roof and foundation while Cliff and Anna foot the bill for septic, electricity, fencing, and other upgrades. They lease 160 acres for $150 per acre and pay the preserve 5% of all farm store sales. Cliff calls this a wonderful partnership, and the property's high visibility has supercharged sales.   Next, Andy and Cliff dig into the financials, as Cliff meticulously tracks production costs, sales, and profits of each enterprise. The largest and fastest growing animal enterprise is beef, while raw milk, which requires a ton of labor and time, isn't nearly as profitable, so Cliff caps production. His data also informs when and where to raise prices to ensure profitability.   Uniquely, All Grass Farms has equity investors, longtime friends who were eager to provide patient capital. Later on, they took out an operating line of credit to help with infrastructure improvements. Most recently, Cliff and Anna began leasing organic pastureland in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, owned by the Yggdrasil Land Foundation. With a triple-net lease, they maintain the buildings, property, and infrastructure and pay insurance, property taxes, and a stewardship fee as rent. Cliff and Anna now live at this property and are looking for a full-time farm manager for the Brunner property, although finding and keeping workers is challenging. Cliff is a great role model for managing farm finances, so tune in to learn more!

How do you connect a high-profile brand with its best audience? Through great storytelling! Liz Brunner is the Founder and CEO of Brunner Communications, assisting high-profile individuals and organizations in developing powerful, meaningful, and desirable brand identities.  She is also the Founder of Brunner Academy of Online Learning, and the author of Dare to Own You: Taking Your Authenticity and Dreams into Your Next Chapter. Liz has had a number of professions over the course of her career, from high school music teacher to Emmy Award-winning news anchor. She explains that the key to her success can be summed up in two words: great storytelling. When you know the secrets of storytelling, you can capture the attention of your audience and keep them hooked. Having worked both in person and on television, it was easy for Liz to transition her work into the digital space after the pandemic started – in fact, she began to teach others how to engage in the virtual space and still move the dial. She shares why digital presenters need to think like TV stars, and how to get your audience to feel your presence - even through the lens. Our final topic revolves around the energy gained from working face-to-face, versus the newfound advantages of the digital space. Liz explains the pros and cons of each, and how to connect, communicate, and engage, developing the keys to success regardless of your medium. Three Key Takeaways: * When presenting virtually and using slides keep things moving! Use more slides with less content on each or include animations to keep the audience constantly engaged. * Looking directly into the camera when working online gives a feeling that you are looking directly at every member of your audience and engages them more. * While putting a message together you need to hook people right away, if you don't you'll miss an opportunity for your brand (personally and for your company).
