Ab 1.

In this episode I chat with Ian Brunner, co‑founder and CEO of IPTS - Interplanetary Talent Services, about how recruiting in Web3 and AI safety is changing — and how founders and job‑seekers alike can win. Ian shares how he pivoted from ad‑tech and Facebook into Web3, helped build recruiting at Protocol Labs, then spun out to form IPTS and now supports over a hundred companies placing talent across complex, frontier tech roles. We dig into real tactics for hiring: spotting fake AI‑written resumes, structuring hybrid roles, and mapping the cycles of the talent market. Whether you're a founder scaling a startup, or a candidate trying to break into Web3/AI, you'll pick up actionable advice you can use now. Key Learnings[00:03:00] How Ian made the jump from Facebook recruiting to Web3, and why direct access to leadership mattered for his decision.[00:06:00] The origin story of IPTS: how the recruiting team at Protocol Labs shifted into an agency model and spun out.[00:08:00] What sets IPTS apart: mission‑alignment, success‑based models, network depth, and a hands‑on operations mindset.[00:12:00] How IPTS acquires new clients and the power of referrals in this talent market.[00:13:00] Two major hiring trends in Web3/AI: the lack of entry‑level roles, and the rise of "Frankenstein roles" combining multiple functions.[00:20:00] How AI is disrupting recruiting: job descriptions created by AI, applications written by AI, and the challenge of verifying authenticity.[00:22:00] Real tactics for vetting candidates: ask about team structure, who managed them, who they interacted with — questions scammers/bots struggle with.[00:23:00] The resurgence of reference and background checks: what was ignored in hiring booms now is mandatory.[00:24:00] Global hiring in Web3: remote first, equitable pay across locations, and the attractiveness of arbitrage (talent anywhere).[00:38:00] Advice for founders: spend time upfront clarifying what you're hiring for; understand the hiring cycles of the year; and define what carrot you're offering if you need hires in tight windows.[00:31:00] The highest‑demand roles right now: senior to staff engineering; marketing/ecosystem/community growth; and BD/sales in Web3/AI contexts.DisclaimerNothing mentioned in this podcast is investment or financial advice and please do your own research.Connecthttps://ipts.ai/https://www.linkedin.com/company/ipts/https://x.com/iptsaihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ianbrunner/It would mean a lot if you can leave a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and share this podcast with a friend. What is the test for discharging a student loan in bankruptcy? Is it even possible? Student loans are non-dischargeable, right? WRONG !! On this week's episode, Shawn is back solo again (we'll hear George back again for next week's episode) interviewing attorney Jeff Hakanson.  Jeff has been an attorney for thirty (30) years! He granduating with his J.D. from South Texas College of Law and has practiced bankruptcy for his entire career.  On November 17, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a memorandum on student loan discharges.  What normally fell under the Brunner case and a Totality of Circumstances argument has now been streamlined by the US DOJ to assist in discharging student loan debts under certain circumstances, some of which include: The borrower is over 65; The borrower has a disability; The borrower has been unemployed 5 of the last 10 years; The borrower has attempted repayment in good faith. Typically these discharge cases are started with the filing of an Adversary Proceeding (with no fee if related to Student Loans) and then the debtor / borrower and attorney complete a "litigation package" with certain "attestations."  If the DOJ agrees, then the student loans can be discharged, or maybe modified in some capacity. The memorandum was designed to allow borrowers more clarity on discharging federally backed student loans (not private loans). Authvia is pioneering conversational commerce, building the infrastructure that enables businesses to accept payments through text messages, WhatsApp, and other messaging platforms. With $30 million in funding raised, the company has connected over 250 payment processors and gateways with 300+ messaging networks globally, creating a seamless payment experience that Chris Brunner believes will become bigger than traditional e-commerce. In this episode, Chris shares his journey from identifying SMS as the most ubiquitous communication channel to building a platform that processes payments with just a four-digit code, all while navigating the complex world of channel partnerships and enterprise sales.   Topics Discussed: The evolution from app fatigue to messaging-first commerce solutions Building infrastructure that connects 250+ payment processors with 300+ messaging networks The challenge of creating a new payment category without established buyers or budgets Why channel partnerships take years to mature but ultimately provide massive scale The technical innovation behind tokenized payments over messaging platforms How regulatory compliance and paper elimination drive enterprise adoption   GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Sometimes being early means waiting for the market to catch up: Chris spent years building Authvia before the market was ready, describing how "channels sit" for years before they eventually activate. He emphasizes that conviction in your vision is crucial when you're ahead of market demand. B2B founders building transformative solutions should prepare for extended timelines and focus on building deep partnerships that will pay off when the market matures. Focus on the financial buyer when there's no established category: Without a clear buyer or budget line item, Chris found success by targeting CFOs and finance teams who could immediately see the cash flow impact of faster payments. He noted, "When you get into the office of the CFO, that group cares... I can get what was going to be paid in 30 days, paid in two hours." B2B founders should identify who benefits most financially from their solution and lead with those metrics. Build infrastructure that makes partners look good: Rather than trying to sell standalone solutions, Chris focused on creating technology that could be white-labeled by major payment and messaging companies. He explained, "Getting them to sell your stuff that looks and feels like your stuff is next to impossible. Getting them to sell their stuff that looks and feels like them is the home run." B2B founders should consider how their technology can enhance partners' existing offerings rather than compete with them. Channel partnerships require massive upfront investment: Chris candidly shared that the first five years of channel partnerships showed little return, saying "channels sit, right? And channels do nothing until they eventually do." However, this strategy ultimately provided access to enterprise customers that would have been impossible to reach directly. B2B founders pursuing channel strategies should prepare for long development cycles and ensure they have sufficient runway. Target the intersection of multiple pain points: Authvia succeeds by solving messaging, payments, and compliance challenges simultaneously. Chris described how customers quickly identify 17 different use cases once they understand the platform. B2B founders should look for solutions that address multiple related problems rather than point solutions, as this creates stronger value propositions and higher switching costs.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co   //   Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. On this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with Gregg Brunner, chief operations officer at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), about recent deadly crashes in or near work zones. On June 24, a truck driver was killed and MDOT workers were injured in a crash on I-75 in Monroe County. In another, July 1, two people were killed in a crash in a work zone queue on I-96 west of Portland. Brunner composed a poignant message to department employees with a reminder of the need to be vigilant about safety. From his message:                We talk often about safety, but these events are painful reminders of just how critical it is every single day, in every single task. Whether you're in a work zone, near active traffic, in one of our garages or facilities, or behind the wheel, your actions matter. Safety is a mindset, not a checklist. It's about being present, engaged and always looking out for one another. Brunner talked about benefits to be found in developments in technology to alert drivers and the promise of driver-assist technologies in vehicles, as outlined by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“They would take you around, introduce you to all of their contacts, translate for you, and help you put together the story,” says scholar-journalist Kira Brunner Don in this week's episode of The World in Time. “And I often felt like, you pay them, of course, a day rate, but there was this understanding that real news was made by American journalists who flew in and told you what was what. All of us were depending on journalists from the country, or writers from the country, who knew it far better than we did and really had the context and the sensibility. But there was this unspoken rule that they'll be biased. I really felt like I wanted to create something that instead focused on the actual voices of the people who live in the countries we're covering.” This week on the podcast Donovan Hohn hosts a two-part episode. First, he speaks with Kira Brunner Don, former executive editor of Lapham's Quarterly, about the making of our first issue, States of War, from Winter 2008, and about the magazine Brunner Don edits now, Stranger's Guide. In part two of this episode, Hohn speaks with Nathan Brown, translator of Verso's new dual-language edition of Charles Baudelaire's The Flowers of Evil, about the history of Baudelaire's magnum opus. Brown gives us a guided tour of “Recueillement,” the Baudelaire poem read at Lewis Lapham's memorial service, which Brown has translated anew for Lapham's Quarterly, under the title “Introspection.”

Brunner details housing plans, local business buy-in for increased security, and some long-game, multimillion-dollar projects like the 'Rail Trail.' What is it exactly? And when could people see the Rail Trail in real life? Thanks for listening. If you've got an idea, send it to us at chris.mckee@krqe.com or gabrielle.burkhart@krqe.com. Alex was pleasantly surprised by the hybrids in the test at IMS, but there are still some issues to work through, plus it's race week, not Tim's -no one cares about that one- but Barber. All that, plus Alex had another squirrel in his place, and apparently Brunner is a Houdini-Doodle, or Houdoodle, if you will.+++Off Track is part of the SiriusXM Sports Podcast Network.
