The Epicurean version of this argument also involves one of the key ideas that Epicurus himself introduced, which is called proleipsis in Greek, and typically translated as "preconceptions", which all human beings have and share in common. In The Church of Jesus Christ, there is a law known as common consent. Every single member has the opportunity to sustain or object to an official calling that has been extended to an individual by those in authority whether it is on the ward level, stake level, or general level. What does it really mean to sustain a calling for you? What are you saying when you raise your right hand in agreement with the extended calling? Are you making a covenant? Are you saying you will support, uphold, and follow that individual as he or she follows the promptings of the spirit in fulfilling that call?Do you really have an opportunity to object to the calling? Yes you do. Does that mean it will be overturned? Not necessarily, but you can object. Normally an objection would come down to a worthiness issues. Has the individual that is being sustained been involved in an action of sin that has not been fully repented of that you know about that others may not. Most importantly that the Bishop or Stake President does not know about. That would truly be the only time to not sustain an individual in that calling. Join us as we discuss what it means to sustain and what the law of common consent means for you.

On this episode, we dive into our historical timeline by examining the power of the press in early Mormonism. From the BoM to the Times and Seasons, the Mormons were publication fiends in absolute control of the information going out of Nauvoo through public literature. Ebenezer Robinson, Robert B. Thompson, and Don Carlos Smith work as editors for the Times and Seasons which goes off without a hitch until August 1841. Polygamy starts to be taught to various members of trusted Mormon elite without Common Consent of the average chapel-attending Mormon. After that, we have on Lydia Finch to discuss cults, how to identify them, and what mechanisms they use to exert control over their members. Sam Young lived as an orthodox Mormon for several decades, including a full term as an LDS bishop and many years as a stake high counselor. After stumbling on the LDS Gospel Topics Essays and learning about Joseph Smith's polyandry, the Book of Abraham translation problems, etc. -- and specifically after the LDS Church November 2015 policy change regarding LGBT members and their children -- Sam experienced an LDS faith crisis. Over time, Sam developed his own method for expressing concern about LDS policy and administrative problems -- he decided to begin living the Law of Common Consent as found in Doctrine and Covenants 26, which to him means that during every ward, stake and general conference Sam will be voting opposed when asked to sustain the LDS first presidency and the quorum of the 12 apostles. Sam is also inviting other LDS church members to consider a similar approach if they object to recent policy and administrative changes. This interview includes Jamie Hanis Handy and Sam's 85 year old mother, Bertie, who recently resigned her church membership over similar concerns to Sam.
