In the early 2000’s David Archuleta broke into stardome on American Idol, capturing the hearts of millions. But behind the scenes he was grappling with his sexuality and faith. “I felt like if people found this out about me, they would know how dirty I was,” he told Maria Hinojosa when talking about what the Mormon Church made him feel, early on, when he began to realize he could be gay. In a new memoir, David reveals his journey to fame and how he has worked to embrace his authentic self. Listen to this intimate conversation about his journey and what his faith looks like today. The Mormon Church keeps telling us it is growing. And not only is it growing, they say it is growing faster than it has ever grown in history! And yet faithful Mormon researcher Jeff Strong says the LDS Church has lost 40 % of its active membership in the last twenty-five years. How will the Church react now that its generation-long deception is being revealed? And what will the Mormon influences do who have repeated and championed the lies told them by the Church they seek to defend? Time will tell. In the meanwhile, Bill and RFM are going to take a victory lap on this issue, because they have been calling out the Church on this deception for as long as they have been podcasting. Finally RFM and Bill Reel are vindicated!!! Ian Wilks was a high-ranking leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a former bishop, a former branch president, and a member of the stake presidency in British Columbia, with responsibility for shepherding twelve congregations and thousands of members. Then-apostle Dallin H. Oaks, now the 18th president and living prophet of the LDS Church, personally recruited him, interviewed him, called him, set him apart, and trained him into that role.¹ For 37 years, Ian devoted his entire life to his church. He paid tithing on his gross income. He sealed his marriage in the London Temple. He conducted hundreds of worthiness interviews. He trained bishops. He stood at pulpits and at altars. He made sacred covenants in the temple to give all he had, including his own life if required, for the building up of the kingdom on earth. In a snowstorm, the cost of those 37 years lands all at once. The thing he wanted most to be true, he learned was untrue. I spoke with Ian on my podcast Cults, Culture & Coercion and in a recent livestream. He is the co-host of the Inside Out podcast with Jim Bennett, son of the late US Senator Bob Bennett. What he told me confirms what former members of the LDS Church have been describing to me since my first book was published in 1988. The Mormon Church meets every criterion of an authoritarian cult under my BITE Model of Authoritarian Control™ and sits on the destructive end of my Influence Continuum©. Ian himself took the BITE Model self-test based on his decades of experience and scored the church at roughly 85 to 90 percent across the four dimensions of behavior, information, thought, and emotion. This group is one of the wealthiest, most influential groups in politics and its believers are over represented (compared to all other faith groups) in our FBI, CIA, Homeland security and faithful people will follow the direction of the Prophet over the Constitution (even though they swear an oath to uphold the Constitution) which should make all Americans worry. Original Air Date: Oct 17, 2018 Today we look into Nazi spacecraft and the Mormon Church's take on Bigfoot! The Vril Society was a occultic group that gained power during the Nazi regime. Channeling aliens, building spacecraft, and harnessing a powerful element known as "Vril." Did this group actually exist and if they did, where are they now? Then we travel back in time to Tennessee, where an early leader of the Mormon church had an encounter with Bigfoot. What does the Church think of this cryptid encounter? They think Bigfoot may be a legendary biblical character! In this video, I wanted to dive a little deeper into the kinds of responses people often give when they see someone leave the Mormon Church. We look at a lengthy social media post reacting to ex-Mormons and break down some of the key arguments, assumptions, and emotional appeals inside it.Some parts may resonate with believing members. Other parts may feel deeply offensive, dismissive, or condescending to former members. My goal here is not just to mock the post, but to examine why these conversations become so emotionally charged in the first place. This episode features commentary alongside Sheena Peterson — ex-Mormon, nurse, mother, and thoughtful voice in the post-Mormon community. This one is a bit longer than usual, so feel free to skip around, watch at 2x speed, or come back later. Either way, I hope you get something valuable out of the discussion.Original Video:What People Say About Mormons Who Leave 2024 https://tinyurl.com/4v6wjbudTopics discussed include:Why faithful members sometimes react strongly to people leavingCommon stereotypes about ex-Mormons“You just wanted to sin” narrativesTone policing and spiritual condescensionFaith crises and emotional complexityOnline Mormon/ex-Mormon culture#ExMormon #Mormon #LDS #FaithCrisis #PostMormon #MormonStories #Exmo #MormonChurchPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: kolob@mormonnewsroundup.org Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Beloved cook, artist and TV personality Poh Ling Yeow joins me to talk about her journey with religion and her decision to leave the Mormon Church. Growing up, I watched Poh on MasterChef Australia and Poh's Kitchen, so this conversation felt incredibly special. We chat about her teenage years in the the church, Mormonism's unexpected pop culture resurgence, the material that made her begin to question things, and what her relationship with spirituality looks like now. Send us Fan MailVIDEO PODCASTIn our previous episode, we explored the simple, straightforward church that Jesus Christ established in the Book of Mormon, along with its clear and plain doctrine: repent, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, become as a little child, and endure to the end.Today, we turn our attention to 1830, when Joseph Smith declared himself a prophet, apostle, elder, and the sole spokesman for God. Although he was instructed to record the doctrines he received, the Book of Mormon records that Jesus Himself commanded His followers to write down His doctrine and warned them not to add to it.In this episode, we examine the significant additions that were later introduced, and we ask a serious question: Was Joseph Smith truly a prophet? And would a true prophet set aside or override the previous teachings of Jesus Christ? We'll share direct quotes from early church meetings that declared older revelations and doctrines outdated, claiming that new instructions were needed for a new time. Yet we maintain that God does not change, and neither does His word.By the end of this episode, we hope you'll clearly see the striking differences between the simple church described in the Book of Mormon and the modern church established by Joseph Smith. My friend Greg Prince (writer, scientist, businessman, philanthropist—see bio at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Prince) joins us to talk about his book “Gay Rights and the Mormon Church: Intended Actions, Unintended Consequences” released in 2019. In this episode, Greg talks the legal efforts of the Church to stop same-sex marriage starting in Hawaii (1990), Proposition 22 (2000) and Proposition 8 (2008) in California, and other efforts—and the “Unintended Consequences” along the way. Greg takes us behind the screens to understand the Church role in and arguments against same-sex marriage—arguments that end up not being empirically defendable. Stung and surprised by the backlash against the Church for its role in Proposition 8, Greg shares the stories of reconciliation between both groups—and how that led to the Church's support for LGBTQ+ non-discrimination protections in Utah regarding housing and employment (SB296 in 2015). Greg talks about the Church support in 2023 for the Respect for Marriage Act—sending a General Authority Seventy for the signing of the bill at the White House. I believe it is important to understand the church's efforts against same sex marriage—and its ultimate support 32 years later for the Respect for Marriage Act. It helps me understand the needless pain for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and their families largely driven by the culture and fearmongering of the day—and to also open our hearts and minds to future efforts to better support them. It also causes me to consider targeted groups today—like our LDS transgender friends—and not wanting to fall in the same pattern. Thank you Greg for being on the podcast and all your efforts to bring more understanding and support for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and their families. Our next Hoaks episode! But, before that! We go through a few select scriptures to see what the passages have to say about the modern Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But that's not all! What do the scriptures have to say about the MAGA movement and our modern politics? We conclude that a person cannot be a believing Christian while supporting the Mormon Church or MAGA. The Bible contradicts both movements so deeply that they're irreconcilable. Then we dive into Pure in Heart. Oaks has a lot to say about materialism and pride, never saying any of it into a mirror. Then we have some happy news where Native American communities have successfully halted a drilling project on native lands. Leaving the Mormon Church isn't just about stopping attendance—it's about undoing a lifetime of conditioning, shame, fear, and identity control. In this episode, Jimmy Snow (Mr Atheist) shares his full Mormon timeline: growing up deeply embedded in LDS leadership culture, early childhood indoctrination, purity shame, priesthood pressure, sexual guilt, Proposition 8, and the slow, painful realization that the church's truth claims simply don't hold up to reality.Jimmy walks through:Why “leaving the church” isn't the same as escaping MormonismChildhood indoctrination and the illusion of choice at baptismSexual shame, guilt cycles, and priesthood hypocrisyThe moment belief finally collapsedHiding atheism, family fallout, and identity crisisWhy life after Mormonism—despite hardship—became happier and healthierThis is not an attack—it's an honest account of deprogramming, rebuilding values, and learning how to live without fear of eternal punishment. If you're questioning, transitioning out, or trying to understand why leaving Mormonism is so hard, this story may sound uncomfortably familiar.
In today's episode, sisters Meggan and Julie share what it was like growing up in a family of 14 children in a very strict Mormon household. They describe a home built around structure, obedience, and high expectations: early morning scripture study, strict rules, limited privacy, and constant pressure to represent the “ideal” Mormon family. They each re-tell their own experiences growing up in this environment, and discuss why they found their relationship fractured for many years—then reveal how they re-kindled their relationship. They also each discuss their individual faith journeys and where they stand with their beliefs today.Topics/themes include:-Family dynamics-Authority and control in the home-Modesty and purity culture-Perfectionism, shame and worthiness-Faith transitionsMeggan is also the host of her own post-Mormon channel, Generally Unquotable, which can be found here. This episode is a beautiful example of bridge building and unconditional love, and we are very grateful to Meggan and Julie for sharing their story with us.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions
What do Disney, Ferrari, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have in common? They're rather litigious when people do things they don't like. We go through the history of copyright and trademark to provide background for some notable recent lawsuits involving these companies. That launches us into a discussion about the recent lawsuit filed by the Mormon Church against John Dehlin, Mormon Stories, and the Open Stories Foundation. After that we talk about The Firm, a Tom Cruise movie where the good guy wins against the Mafia, a corrupt law firm, and the FBI. We end with some good news about targeting depression for treatment. My friend Greg Price (writer, scientist, businessman, philanthropist—see bio at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Prince) joins us to talk about his book “Gay Rights and the Mormon Church: Intended Actions, Unintended Consequences” released in 2019. In this episode, Greg talks the history of the Church approach to homosexuality—going from the behavior model (it's a choice) to *mostly* the biological model (it's not a choice). Greg's book documents when the Church started talking about this (1960's), what was said, the impact, and how we have gradually moved to where we are today. Greg talks about these painful chapters (including when just identifying as gay would get your excommunicated and expelled for Church schools). To understand the road our LGBTQ members and their families are walking, I believe it is important to understand where we have come from—which is sobering as we learn the reality of early days and the impact of LGBTQ members and their families. Further, I think it helps our minds and hearts be open to the need to continue to bring more understand and support—as I feel we are not at the finish line as we work to expand the boarders of Zion. Episode Two will focus on the Church LGBTQ legal efforts (starting with Hawaii in the 1990s) to where we are today. Thank you Greg for being on the podcast and all your efforts to bring more understanding and support for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and their families. And other churches, LDS included choose silence and stand by a formal stance of neutrality at this moment. The Osmonds were a phenomenon of the early to mid-Seventies. They had tremendous success with their own pop records. But they had broader musical ambitions and conceived a song cycle expounding on their faith in the Mormon Church, but in a accessible way for their young audience. Welcome to the weekly MormonNewsRoundup where Al & Dives ruminate on the great and spacious Beehive!
A few years ago I released a video covering the infamous FAIR Mormon / “This Is The Show” Inglourious Basterds parody controversy—the one where a violent execution scene was used to depict John Dehlin being killed in a parody video posted by Kwaku El and Brad Whitbeck. At the time, my reaction felt straightforward. The imagery was disturbing, inappropriate, and wildly out of line. I said so clearly in my original critique, and I still stand by that assessment today. But recently, while reviewing archived TikTok-era content from Mormon Stories Podcast, I came across something that completely changed how I view the situation. In a now largely forgotten TikTok clip, a scene from Doctor Strange—the famous confrontation between Doctor Strange and Dormammu—was edited to depict “the Mormon Church” repeatedly killing various excommunicated or marginalized figures, including Bill Reel, Natasha Helfer, and Jeremy Runnells. When I saw it, I was honestly shocked.Because structurally and visually, it relies on the exact same type of symbolic violent imagery that caused such a massive backlash in the FAIR Mormon controversy.Yet the reactions couldn't have been more different. In this video, I revisit the entire saga, play a clip from my original breakdown, and explain why I now believe there's a serious double standard in how the ex-Mormon community responded. If we're going to condemn violent imagery in religious discourse—and I think we absolutely should—then we have to apply that standard consistently, regardless of which side of the debate it comes from. This isn't about defending FAIR Mormon or attacking Mormon Stories. It's about examining principles, consistency, and credibility in the broader Mormon discourse space.Let's talk about it.Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: kolob@mormonnewsroundup.org Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. On today's episode, we discuss the Supreme Court case Boy Scouts of America v. Dale and what it reveals about freedom of association, anti-discrimination laws, and the cultural shifts within scouting over the last several decades. James, Glenn, Dwayne, and guest law student Tim walk through the facts of the case, the majority and dissenting opinions, and how the justices split, highlighting Rehnquist's reasoning on expressive association and Stevens's view that “morally straight” had never been formally tied to excluding gay members. From there, the conversation widens into a detailed history of Boy Scouts policy changes on gay leaders, transgender youth, and girls' participation, with Dwayne explaining how local units, religious sponsors, and national leadership each shape what scouting looks like on the ground. The hosts also revisit past abuse litigation, bankruptcy, and the influential role of the Mormon Church in the organization's growth and finances, arguing that progressive activists and trial lawyers helped weaken a once-stable pipeline for developing responsible citizens and future military leaders. In the latter part of the show, they pivot to foreign policy and domestic politics, touching on Iran's missile capabilities, alleged Russian and Chinese targeting assistance, population and business flight from California to Texas and Florida, and what all this might mean for Donald Trump's reelection prospects. Throughout, the tone mixes legal education, personal scouting stories, and sharp-edged political commentary, giving listeners both a case-law primer and a broader critique of how institutions like the Boy Scouts and the courts have changed over time. Don't miss it!

President Trump told reporters he might bomb Iranian oil facilities for the fun of it, Pete Hegseth is mad at the media for accurately reporting on the war, and the president is having trouble remembering his favorite catchphrases. Tony-winners Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez created an obscenity-riddled Broadway musical so funny that even the Mormon Church itself got in on the joke. The strange and sometimes sinister world of America's homegrown religions, faith movements, and cults is filled with bizarre characters. There are many that most listeners have undoubtedly heard of, but what about the cult leader who actually became a king?In 1847, the only man ever crowned king within the continental United States began his rule from a secluded island in Lake Michigan. James Jesse Strang was a religious leader, politician, attorney, teacher, writer, and newspaper editor, who attracted more than 2,500 followers to a place that he ruled with an iron hand. After being ejected from the Mormon Church, he created his own sect, for which he served as prophet, seer, and revelator and built an organization that he hoped would rival the church of Brigham Young in Utah. But his strange adventures as a church leader and king would eventually lead to his assassination and the fall of the only kingdom that's ever existed within the United States. Our Sponsors:* Check out BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.com* Check out Shopify: https://shopify.com/hauntings* Check out TruDiagnostic and use my code HAUNTINGS for a great deal: https://www.trudiagnostic.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/american-hauntings-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

While the Trump administration wages war against Iran and broadens their military scope in the northern hemisphere, there are more subtle campaigns being pushed here at home – like the one to convince women to do nothing more than have babies and stay at home. This week, Alex speaks to former trad wife and host of “The Wake Her Up Podcast”, Sharon Johnson, about her upbringing in the Mormon Church, what it was like to discover she could have agency and choice in her late thirties, and how she feels about trad wives trending. Then Alex is joined by host of Crooked's “Hysteria” podcast, Erin Ryan, to talk about the broader political goals behind the Heritage Foundation's Project 2026 plan, and how it attempts to punish women who don't fit their ideals.
Inclusive Mormonism: Inside Mormon Legacy Ministries Justin Francom thinks every Mormon Church is the true church. He shares a vision of surprisingly inclusive Mormonism, challenging the rigid boundaries and schisms that usually divide the various Latter-day Saint factions. https://youtu.be/Px-PJVAdOHs Don't miss our other conversations on Mormon fundamentalism: https://gospeltangents.com/denominations/fundamentalim/ Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Award-winning authors Universalist View of True Church Francom holds a radically universalist view of the priesthood, believing that the mainstream LDS Church, the AUB, the FLDS, Centennial Park, and the Peterson Group all possess valid priesthood authority. When asked if these groups are apostate, he frankly notes that “we’re all apostate to a certain degree.” He asserts that no single church is perfectly true or completely false; rather, God respects human agency and expects mortals to make mistakes as they figure things out. Drawing on his deep love for both American and South Korean cultures, Francom argues that God loves diversity and that heaven itself will feature a rich diversity of cultures. Therefore, different worship styles and branches of Mormonism should be able to coexist as long as they are coming unto Christ. Missouri Temple Community Francom also elaborates on the independent fundamentalist community out in Missouri. They hold regular Sunday meetings, separating for Priesthood instruction and coming together for a unified Sacrament meeting. In a beautiful display of peace, they even hold shared meetings on fifth Sundays with the local mainstream LDS congregation and other fundamentalist factions. To avoid theological conflict, they simply omit the physical sacrament ordinance during these shared gatherings. The community operates strictly on a voluntary basis, with no mandated tithing, even when it comes to funding and maintaining their newly built temple. To prevent the rise of authoritarian “kings” or a “one man” leader, the temple council is a rotating body where members serve two-year terms before being replaced by a priesthood vote. Remarkably, the temple is open to individuals from other Mormon branches—including mainstream LDS members—who wish to experience the original 1840s endowment, provided they are there for sincere religious reasons rather than just “temple tourism.” Bridging the Gap: Mormon Legacy Ministries Recognizing that many Latter-day Saints are losing their faith over modern policy issues and discarding their testimonies entirely, Francom helped launch a brand-new initiative: Mormon Legacy Ministries (MLM). Francom observed that the mainstream LDS Church excels at missionary work and discipling members, while fundamentalists have successfully preserved early doctrines like plural marriage and the Adam-God theory. MLM seeks to bring the best of both worlds together. Described as an “ecumenical Mormon church,” MLM serves as a floating organization or waypoint for independent Mormons. Currently operating primarily over Zoom with Joshua Erickson serving as bishop, MLM is designed as a safe haven where individuals don’t have to swear loyalty to “one man” or strict dogmas. It bridges the gap for those who feel the mainstream LDS Church is no longer working for them, but who still want to hold onto core restoration truths without the intense leap of joining an insular fundamentalist compound. Francom's vision is a refreshing departure from the fighting that usually defines Mormon history. And the paradigm shifts don’t stop there. In the next episode, Francom plans to discuss overturning the fundamentalist priesthood ban on Black members, boldly stating that Brigham Young simply made a mistake. In today's episode, Edward Nachel shares his firsthand account of serving on the High Council that excommunicated Wade Christofferson –and the guilt, questions, and reckoning that followed. Edward served in the same ward as Wade and knew him for over twenty-years.We begin with the recent arrest of Wade Christofferson and the allegations that have surfaced, including sexually coded letters and reported searches found on his phone. These are allegations until proven guilty in a court of law. But Edward's story focuses on something broader: how church disciplinary systems operate, how secrecy functions, and what happens when there are no advocates for victims inside the room.Edward describes being selected for the Disciplinary Council, drawing lots to see who represented the abuser and who represented the church, being sworn to secrecy, the absence of witnesses and the victims, how the final decision was made by the Stake Presidency, and how ward members were never warned. At the time, Edward believed he was “on the church's side.” Years later, he sees the system differently. This episode is not about attacking faith. It's about transparency, accountability, and protecting children. Edward openly asks: What could I have done? Why didn't I do more? And what must change to ensure this never happens again? If you or someone you know has been affected by abuse in a religious setting, you are not alone.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1. Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology2. Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis3. Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions

The Mormon Church has made a move that's raising questions about where it's headed next. President Dallin H. Oaks has appointed Clark Gilbert as the newest apostle, a relatively young (at 55 years old!) leader known for his firm orthodoxy and culture-war posture within church education. For many within the church and without, it feels like a signal about the future direction of the institution, particularly on LGBTQ issues and internal dissent. We also examine Alabama's proposal to make disrupting a church service a felony punishable by up to ten years in prison, Oklahoma's latest attempt to establish a publicly funded religious charter school, and a lawsuit challenging Trump's Religious Liberty Commission. Plus: a controversial plea deal involving a former prison chaplain, and a Christian university "merger" that ended with faculty fired and assets absorbed.

Patrick answers an email question about a transition from Mormonism to Catholicism, unpacking the Church’s teachings on revelation and changes in doctrine with clarity. Questions pour in: when does transubstantiation happen, should laypeople extend hands in blessing, why cling to the past? Patrick explains the church’s origins, the unity Christ wants, and offers guidance for Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic callers wrestling with faith, tradition and marriage. Patrick continues answering the email from the end of the last hour. What is the best way to understand and explain why Peter retained prophetic abilities and continued to add to the deposit of faith but that this charism was no longer needed after that deposit was essentially completed upon the deaths of the apostles? (00:18) LtCol Dan (email) - If what you just said is true about divine revelation, that it ended with the Apostles, how do we make sense of St. Faustina’s Divine Mercy instruction from Jesus, visitation to purgatory, etc.? (03:56) Brian - Why does transubstantiation occur during the mass? (15:58) Daniel - The priest asks us to extend our right hand forward over people being blessed. Is that appropriate? (22:24) Santos - You were talking about the Mormon Church. Why do you point all this stuff about rejecting black people? What happened already happened. When are we going to stop this. Nobody is a saint. (26:21) Ryan - I was born and raised Orthodox, and I go to a Catholic Church now. What should my next step be? (38:56) Paul - Is a marriage between a Muslim and Baptized Catholic valid? (47:10)
