In this episode, Junior shares the story of one of his early adventures toward appearing on television. At just twenty-one years old, he made a decision: he was going to be on TV. Instead of wishing for it, he took action. With the help of a kind and patient Bishop from the Mormon Church, Pogo Poge, aka Bishop Morgan White, that opportunity became reality. Junior appeared during the final two months of the beloved Checkers and Pogo show, playing the role of the mailman and stepping into a dream he had declared years earlier.Years later, while working in radio, a producer created a television special about the show. And even though she knew Junior had been part of it, he was somehow left out of the production. It wasn't the first time he had been overlooked. As he explains, he was never part of the popular clique in any field he entered. Recognition didn't always and hardly ever came from the system, but fulfillment did.The deeper lesson is this: you can be in the system without belonging to it. You can live in the world without being defined by it. Gatekeepers, cliques, and control mechanisms do not determine your destiny. Your dreams are not dependent on approval. When asked if these groups are apostate, he frankly notes that “we’re all apostate to a certain degree.” He asserts that no single church is perfectly true or completely false; rather, God respects human agency and expects mortals to make mistakes as they figure things out. Drawing on his deep love for both American and South Korean cultures, Francom argues that God loves diversity and that heaven itself will feature a rich diversity of cultures. Therefore, different worship styles and branches of Mormonism should be able to coexist as long as they are coming unto Christ. Missouri Temple Community Francom also elaborates on the independent fundamentalist community out in Missouri. They hold regular Sunday meetings, separating for Priesthood instruction and coming together for a unified Sacrament meeting. In a beautiful display of peace, they even hold shared meetings on fifth Sundays with the local mainstream LDS congregation and other fundamentalist factions. To avoid theological conflict, they simply omit the physical sacrament ordinance during these shared gatherings. The community operates strictly on a voluntary basis, with no mandated tithing, even when it comes to funding and maintaining their newly built temple. To prevent the rise of authoritarian “kings” or a “one man” leader, the temple council is a rotating body where members serve two-year terms before being replaced by a priesthood vote. Remarkably, the temple is open to individuals from other Mormon branches—including mainstream LDS members—who wish to experience the original 1840s endowment, provided they are there for sincere religious reasons rather than just “temple tourism.” Bridging the Gap: Mormon Legacy Ministries Recognizing that many Latter-day Saints are losing their faith over modern policy issues and discarding their testimonies entirely, Francom helped launch a brand-new initiative: Mormon Legacy Ministries (MLM). Francom observed that the mainstream LDS Church excels at missionary work and discipling members, while fundamentalists have successfully preserved early doctrines like plural marriage and the Adam-God theory. MLM seeks to bring the best of both worlds together. Described as an “ecumenical Mormon church,” MLM serves as a floating organization or waypoint for independent Mormons. Currently operating primarily over Zoom with Joshua Erickson serving as bishop, MLM is designed as a safe haven where individuals don’t have to swear loyalty to “one man” or strict dogmas. It bridges the gap for those who feel the mainstream LDS Church is no longer working for them, but who still want to hold onto core restoration truths without the intense leap of joining an insular fundamentalist compound. Francom's vision is a refreshing departure from the fighting that usually defines Mormon history. And the paradigm shifts don’t stop there. The Mormon Church has made a move that's raising questions about where it's headed next. President Dallin H. Oaks has appointed Clark Gilbert as the newest apostle, a relatively young (at 55 years old!) leader known for his firm orthodoxy and culture-war posture within church education. For many within the church and without, it feels like a signal about the future direction of the institution, particularly on LGBTQ issues and internal dissent. We also examine Alabama's proposal to make disrupting a church service a felony punishable by up to ten years in prison, Oklahoma's latest attempt to establish a publicly funded religious charter school, and a lawsuit challenging Trump's Religious Liberty Commission. Plus: a controversial plea deal involving a former prison chaplain, and a Christian university "merger" that ended with faculty fired and assets absorbed.

A key figure who accelerated the historical crisis for both the Tanners (who left the group in 1962) and Pauline's church was Wes Walters, a Presbyterian minister from Marissa, Illinois. Walters was asked to write an article on Mormons for Christianity Today. His detailed research focused on testing Joseph Smith's claims against tangible historical records, particularly those surrounding the First Vision. Walters' findings: the great revival and the subsequent fighting over converts among the denominations did not happen in 1820. Instead, significant church growth (hundreds of converts) occurred between 1823, 1824, and 1825. This discovery forced a complete recalibration of the chronology, as it meant the First Vision and the subsequent Moroni visits leading up to the plates could not logically fit the existing timeline. Walters' small pamphlet, New Light on Mormon Origins, caused such a disruption that it "threw the Mormon Church into a tizzy," forcing LDS historians to travel back East to conduct their own major studies. Walters is credited by Sandra Tanner as being a key factor in pushing the LDS Church into serious historical scholarship. Magic Connection: A Bridge Too Far While Walters' dating research was shocking, his discovery of the 1826 trial documents cemented the crisis. Pauline's group, following David Whitmer, already accepted the story that Joseph Smith used a "rock" in his "hat" to translate the Book of Mormon, aligning with the "seer stone" narrative. However, the 1826 trial confirmed Joseph Smith's involvement in money digging, associating the seer stone with divination and magic practices—the occult that the Christians in Pauline's group firmly rejected. The group found this connection irreconcilable: They questioned why God would use an instrument associated with magic. They noted that Joseph Smith seemed to bypass the instruments God allegedly supplied (the plates) and continued using the same rock used in divination. The transition from seeking treasure (magic) to seeking revelation (religion) looked too "fishy," suggesting it was merely a "switching of what you're using this stone for". The fact that the same individuals involved in drawing magic circles and searching for treasure were the same first converts to Mormonism was deeply troubling. Pauline Hancock's Church Voted to Disband The Church of Christ (Bible Book of Mormon), founded and led by Pauline Hancock, emerged as a unique splinter group focused on returning to what they believed was "1830 Mormonism"—a faith centered purely on the Bible and the Book of Mormon, devoid of later revelations (like the Doctrine and Covenants past 1830) and "Aaronic, Melchizedek Priesthood ideas". However, this small community, known for meeting in the “Basement church” in Independence, ultimately discovered that even their foundational scripture, the Book of Mormon, could not withstand intense historical scrutiny, leading to its dissolution years after Pauline Hancock's death in 1962. The Vote & Dissolution Faced with this overwhelming historical evidence, the Church of Christ had to make a choice regarding their "litmus test"—the Book of Mormon. In 1972, approximately a decade after Pauline's death (she died in the summer of 1962), the church took a formal vote on whether to retain the Book of Mormon as scriptur...
