In this episode they dive into the difference between "waking up" (a one-time peak spiritual experience) and "growing up" (the slow and steady move through stages of psychological development & consciousness awakening) and contend that "waking up" experiences MUST be looked at through the lens of one's own (and one's culture's) stage of consciousness development.  This framing sheds a whole new light on prevalent interpretations of the Mormon version of heaven (cishet, transactional, patriarchal, etc.) and might help you understand how this revelation both shares some aspects of the perennial tradition but also veers quite dramatically away from it.  Episodes three and four will illustrate this principle in detail.  00:00 Introduction and Welcome00:34 Discussing Integral Theory06:08 Stages of Faith and Community11:28 Exploring Transcend and Include14:59 Doctrine and Covenants Section 7617:31 Waking Up vs. Growing Up36:21 Conclusion and ReflectionsBooks Referenced: The Different Drum: Community Making & Peace (New Hope for Humankind) - M. Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: Polarization, Trump Victories, & the Story of Human Progression (& Regression) [Part III of IV] In this episode Val & Nathan discuss how societies evolve upward in love, inclusion, & consciousness, unless something goes terribly wrong from those on the leading edge of consciousness. In short, if the leading edge does not both 'transcend' in consciousness but ALSO 'include' the value of the earlier stages, then evolution is prone to halt or even move into a regression of consciousness.  Looking at our current climate of political polarization, Val & Nathan analyze how the woke movement's shortcomings and Trump's rise in power reflect deeper issues in how societies advance, or don't advance, when course correction is needed. The conversation centers on how the failure to love and include earlier developmental stages can regress societal progress.  This phenomenon is not so much about politics as it is about human (and society's) growth & development.   They will be going much deeper into this topic as it relates to religion and the LDS faith in later episodes.  This series will be most effectively understood & integrated by those who are full access listeners and therefore will drop every Friday for the next four weeks. Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: In-depth Exploration of Patriarchy & its Correlation to Violence & Abuse [Part VIIof X]In today's episode, Val & Nathan walk through the layered risk factors around spousal violence/abuse that married couples are exposed to when belonging to a formalized institutional patriarchal church. Reinforcement of male authority, inadequately trained clergy offering counseling services, isolation from external oversight/support, and tendencies to protect the male abusers (esp those with leadership callings) are all discussed. They also make recommendations for inviting a safer/healthier marriage theology and climate that will contribute to individual & marital flourishing. **Please note, Val & Nathan are not implying that abuse & violence are *inevitable* when couples hold a patriarchal worldview or belong to a formalized patriarchal religious institution--they are simply unpacking all of the heavily researched data pointing to heightened risk factors associated with patriarchy and violence/abuse.Referenced in this Episode: Associated Press - Seven years of sex abuse: How Mormon officials let it happenBell Hooks - The Will to Change; Men, Masculinity and Love Support the showListen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Subscription $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Subscription $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Donate: Venmo or Patreon Visit our Website

Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: In-depth Exploration of Patriarchy & its Correlation to Violence & Abuse [Part IV of X]In this and the next episode, Val & Nathan dig into men on men violence due to the culture of patriarchy. In this episode they touch on male-dominated corporate culture competition, college fraternity hazing, and possibly most sensitive to many of listeners: to LDS missionary hazing rituals experienced by many of this faith tradition. Why does this happen? Patriarchy is a dominator model where not all men get to dominate. And those who are found on the "one down" side of this dominator model are often victims of violence and abuse. Support the show Listen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Access $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Access $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Gift a Scholarship Download Free Resources Visit our Website

This series has been a labor of love for this couple who care deeply about their Latter-day Saint and surrounding loved ones and want to spread the word far and wide that all patriarchy is harmful but we live in day and age where institutional patriarchy MUST be lovingly challenged for the welfare of every single human being. Patriarchy is tightly correlated to actual violence and abuse. If nothing else convinces you that reform is needed...many this will give you pause.Mentioned in this Episode: Podcast: Breaking Down Patriarchy- Episode 37: How to be an Anti-Patriarchist with Levi Murray Podcast: The Foyer- Season 3 Episode 3 Women's Equality: It Absolutely Matters Support the showListen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Subscription $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Subscription $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Donate: Venmo or Patreon Visit our Website

Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: Living in a World of Hypernormalization [Part I of II]In this episode Val shares an update about how she is processing the recent events of her and Nathan's forced resignation in the face of excommunication by looking at this both as a personal issue for them but also plays with the idea that they are playing a symbolic role in a much larger narrative that is unfolding and colliding in both conservative Christian AND conservative political spaces and is gaining steam due to the concept of HYPERNORMALIZATION: a social phenomenon where cultural collectives know that things are very wrong but pretend that all is well.  Friday's episode dives into how HYPERNORMALIZATION might explain much that is going on in our own heritage tradition and why those who do not participate in the "rules of hypernormalization" (by acknowledging issues exist) are punished.  https://valeriehamaker.com/one-one-consultations/Support the showListen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Subscription $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Subscription $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Donate: Venmo or Patreon Visit our Website
