048 - Ska in The MySpace Age

In 2008, members of the New Orleans ska-punk band Fatter Than Albert launched Community Records, an umbrella beneath which a nationwide subculture of DIY outsider ska swapped ideas and fans. It wasn't the beginning, but it was one of the defining moments of what we're reluctantly calling the MySpace age. Thanks to social media, bands thriving in their regional scenes could build new networks and share resources in the shadow of a music industry that had no interest in ska as anything but a punchline. Our guests this episode are from two bands who were around for that era and who also have recently dropped great new albums. Will and Jonzee from Stuck Lucky discuss their new album Counting Curses (2024, Ska Punk International), and Boofish and Nic from Brunt of It tell us about "It's A Mad, Bad, Sad, Rad World" (2025, Jump Up Records), and the four of them tell us what they saw back then and what's different these days.Listener feedback! Ska Canon! Its a jam-packed classic episode! Hornpod theme performed by Brunt of It. The Hornpod Ska Canon lives at hornpod.org

Bad Operation played their first show ever in October 2021. It was packed, with an enthusiastic crowd. But a lot led up to this moment. The band formed in 2019 as a side project for the members, with the intention of them playing a single show. That show, scheduled for March 12 2020 never happened thanks to the pandemic. As much as that sucked, they did suddenly have a ton of time to record music. In Dec 2020, they released their excellent debut album and blew many minds!Today we bring on two members of Bad Operation: Greg Rodrigue and D-Ray. Though Bad Operation is a new group, the members have an interesting and expansive history with ska, like their time in the mid-2000s New Orleans ska scene with bands like Fatter Than Albert, Samurai Deli and Angry Banana. We also talk about Greg and D-Ray's label, Community Records, their ongoing festival Block Party, the iconic NOLA venue Big Top, and Greg's spot Hey Cafe.We also break down several samples on their debut record that includes The Impossibles, Mike Park, Blue Meanies, The Specials, Sublime and Jackie Mittoo. We talk about how Jeff Rosenstock's label Quote Unquote and Mike Park's label Asian Man inspired Community Records. Plus we discuss the new Bad Time Records Wavebreaker release with songs by Bad Operation and Mighty Mighty Bosstones bassist Joe Gittleman. Here's a link if you want to hear the playlist for "Sell Out," Greg's ska cover band mentioned during the show. Support the show

Today's episode of Community Records is a very special one. It is comprised of two interviews Tammy and Christian had with our good friend Jeff Allan. Jeff speaks about his experiences with homelessness, the police and the importance of caring relationships. These interviews happened in the summer of 2020, but have taken on new meaning to us today. On October 25, 2022 Jeff died much too soon, at the age of 35. Jeff was a joyous man with a massive heart and a killer smile. He loved people and his community deeply. We miss him so much and want to share a glimpse of him with you today. In December 2016, multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Hunter got bored and decided to record a ska cover of “Feliz Navidad,” calling it “Feliz NaviSKA.” This silly idea got a lot of eyeballs, way more than they anticipated, so Jeremy kept recording ska covers of songs by Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182 and other groups. The views continued to grow. This was the birth of SkaTune Network, a YouTube channel with nearly 200,000 subscribers, and several viral videos. Jeremy is our guest on In Defense of Ska. They have shocked countless people outside of the ska scene who’ve assumed the music is dead, and can’t fathom how Jeremy has so many fans. SkaTune Network has also become an entry point for ska that has brought thousands of people to the genre. Additionally, Jeremy also plays trombone in the band We Are The Union and creates original music as “Jer.”On today’s episode, we walk through Jeremy’s career in ska, focusing on several key moments in their life, including the Talent Farm, their introduction to Community Records, and joining We Are The Union. We also discuss Jeremy’s time at Waffle House, winning PUP’s “Free at Last” cover competition, and that controversial TikTok video they made that argues why you should pour your milk before your cereal.
