The next round of advancing worker power during the New Deal saw organized labor's allies in Congress successfully secure their right to organize. So close to the semiquincentennial, it's great to see a novel focused on the life of Abigail Adams, a woman appreciated even in her own time—especially by her husband of more than half a century, John Adams, the second president of the United States—but not, at the time, for her determination that her new country should also extend liberty to its female citizens. Of course, Abigail Adams has received considerable attention since for her views on the need for adult women to control their own futures, but in the process much of the complexity of her life, her character, her surroundings, and her family has dropped out of the discussion. In A Founding Mother: A Novel of Abigail Adams (William Morrow, 2026), Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie dive into the story of Abigail's and John's long and loving marriage, their political service and economic problems, their time at home and abroad, and their six children—four of whom survived to adulthood but not all of whom thrived once they got there. It's all wonderfully rich and complex, both emotionally and in terms of the history revealed here—enhanced by the feminine perspective. The American Revolution as it happened was not the neat story told in school but messy, sprawling, contentious, risky, and eventful, and the formation of the resulting republic reflected all those competing trends. Unless you're a historian specializing in this place and time, I can guarantee you will find out things you never knew, and in entertaining ways. This week, we are covering the life and tragic death of 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp who was a model, law graduate, and passionate advocate for women facing abuse. Her promising future was cut short on Valentine's Day 2013 when she was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Paralympic athlete 26-year-old Oscar Pistorius. What began as a highly publicized romance quickly became one of the most infamous criminal cases in modern history, sparking global debate over domestic violence, intent, and justice. Beyond the headlines and courtroom drama, we take a closer look at who Reeva was, the warning signs within the relationship, the trial that followed, and the legacy her family continues to uphold in her name.  Sources:   Sicetsha, Andile; “Barry Steenkamp, father of slain Reeva, dies: Cause of death, obituary, reactions”; Swisher Post; Sept 15, 2023; https://www.swisherpost.com/local/barry-steenkamp-reeva-dies-cause-of-death-obituary-reactions/; Accessed Feb 21, 2026.   Dray, Kayleigh; “Remembering Reeva Steenkamp: Her inspiring life and tragic death”; Closer; July 6, 2016; https://closeronline.co.uk/celebrity/news/remembering-reeva-steenkamp-inspiring-life-tragic-death/; accessed Feb 21, 2026.  “Reeva Steenkamp”; Biographs.org; https://biographs.org/reeva-steenkamp; accessed Feb 21, 2026.  Riley, Jowena; “Inside Oscar Pistorius and his murder victim Reeva Steenkamp's short-lived and 'fear-ridden' relationship as South Africa's fallen legend is released from prison after nine years”; Daily Mail; Jan 5, 2024; https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12929429/oscar-pistorius-murder-victim-reeva-steenkamp-fear-relationship.html; accessed Feb 21, 2026.  Lindstrom, Sieg; “Oscar Pistorius”; Britannica; https://www.britannica.com/biography/Oscar-Pistorius; accessed Feb 21, 2026.  Fielding, Sam; “Inside the Oscar Pistorius Murder Case: Lies, Evidence, and the Truth About Reeva Steenkamp's Death”; Lawyer Monthly; July 8, 2025; https://www.lawyer-monthly.com/2025/07/oscar-pistorius-murder-trial-explained/; accessed Feb 21, 2026.  Imray, Gerald; “Oscar Pistorius and the Valentine's killing of Reeva Steenkamp. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 15, 2025 is: dreidel • DRAY-dul • noun A dreidel is a 4-sided toy marked with Hebrew letters and spun like a top in a game of chance. The game, played by children especially at Hanukkah, is also called dreidel. // All the kids in the family look forward to playing dreidel together during Hanukkah. See the entry > Examples: “The Jewish tradition has always been syncretic, adapting and responding to the culture around it, he [Rabbi Steven Philp] said. Hanukkah is ‘a great example of this,' Philp said, noting that the holiday's traditions—like spinning the dreidel, eating latkes or potato pancakes, and munching on ... jelly-filled doughnuts—are customs that were borrowed from neighboring cultures over time.” — Kate Heather, The Chicago Sun-Times, 25 Dec. 2024 Did you know? If your dreidel is spinning beneath the glow of the menorah, it's probably the Jewish festival of lights known as Hanukkah. The holiday celebrates the miracle of a small amount of oil—enough for one day—burning for eight days in the Temple of Jerusalem. And though it's a toy, the dreidel's design is very much an homage: on each of its four sides is inscribed a Hebrew letter—nun, gimel, he, and shin—which together stand for Nes gadol haya sham, meaning “A great miracle happened there.” (In Israel, the letter pe, short for po, “here,” is often used instead of shin). In the game of dreidel, each letter bears its own significance: the dreidel is spun and depending on which letter is on top when it lands, the player's currency, or gelt, is added to or taken from the pot. Nun means the player does nothing; gimel means the player gets everything; he means the player gets half; and shin means the player adds to the pot. Wherever you land on holiday traditions, we wish you words of gimel: gratitude, grub, and, of course, gaiety.

On this installment of The Kevin O'Connor Show, New York Knicks superfan and Yahoo's own Ariel Helwani stops by to demand RESPECT for his squad! Ariel is tired of national media — including TNT's "Inside the NBA" — disrespecting a Knicks team that has been rolling as of late. Ariel is sick of hearing the tired take that Coach Thibs plays his starters too many minutes. Helwani didn't stop there — he thinks Josh Hart is hooping like a "top 24 player" in the NBA! And that Jalen Brunson is the "pound-for-pound" #1 player in the NBA. And Karl-Anthony Towns gets some major love for his defense against Nikola Jokic — despite Draymond Green thinking otherwise on social media.Speaking of Dray's beef with KAT, Ariel explains why he wants to see the two of them duke it out in the octagon. And while we're at it, who would win in a real fight between Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard?Don't miss Kevin's takes on the NBA All-Star Reserves and snubs.
