One thing leads to another. Jessica's family's favorite place is Joshua Tree National Park. There she likes to sneak out of the tent at night and look up at the stars. Living in the city and knowing what they're missing there, she dove deeper into the subject of Light pollution. That brought her to FLAP Canada and discovering that the Lights Out movement really started there. Not only that, it was children and teachers that brought it to light. And so she thought it fitting to point that out in her book, “Lights Out: A Movement To Help MIgrating Birds.”Jessica Stremer is an award-winning children's author who combines her love of science and writing to create books that inspire kids to explore and think critically about the world around them. Her other titles include GREAT CARRIER REEF (a Cook Prize Silver Medalist and NY Public Library Best Book of the Year), FIRE ESCAPE: How Animals and Plants Survive Wildfires (a JLG Gold Standard selection), PLIGHT OF THE PELICAN: How Science Saved a Species, TRAPPED IN THE TAR PIT, and WONDERFULLY WILD. Jessica obtained a B.S. in Biology, with an emphasis in Ecology, from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She was a recipient of the 2023 Stephen Fraser Encouragement Award and 2023 finalist for the Russel Freedman award. Dr. Kevin Biese gave a talk at the 2024 Wisconsin Atheltic Trainers Association annual meeting on sports specialization and the evolution of the definition and what current and future research is showing about it. The talk was extremely informational and we wanted to share it on the podcast, thankfully, Kevin was more than willing. In this episode, Dr. Biese dives in deep into what sports specialization is and what the current working definition is. I, personally, was surprised at the definition because it doesn't always only have to be about one sport and the focus on that one exclusively. Dr. Biese has some great general recommendations on how you can help ensure children don't overdo it and also on conversations you can have with student-athletes as an athletic trainer to help them figure out if they are speicalizating and how it could relate to any aches and pains or changes in performance they have. So much to take away from this one. Enjoy. Extra resources shared by Dr. Biese below. For the last 10 years, I have actively sought to understand the human psyche, people have always sparked curiosity within my spirit. This curiosity led me to study and graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where I studied Psychology in-depth. Questions of discontentment kept me looking, leading me to become a Certified Holistic Life Coach, where I spent the last 6 years learning to understand behavior, as it relates to emotional maturity and the challenges we face as Christians. Emotions are not something that we need to fear, but being aware of how they impact our life and journey is something to be mindful of. This journey of seeking healing became my own personal Babylon because I wasn't seeking God's heart in the matter, I was seeking my own. This is what the culture will do, it will ask you to find your identity in ALL of the wrong places, and that is exactly what happened to me. Although I was a Christian, I was allowing the question of “Who am I?” and the deceptive nature of the truth of my emotions to dictate the path and eventually lead me to a moment where God knocked me down in humility, where I have sat for the last 3 years, learning and growing through this lesson. Becoming aware of my personal feelings, desires, and wants wasn't necessarily what led me to my personal hell. It was the belief that my emotions were the truth of which I was seeking. They were a truth, for only a moment, but they were not the truth. This has brought great clarity to the teachings of Paul as we learn to take captive our thoughts and make them obedient to Christ. But before this awareness, I was seeking identity in all of the wrong places, because I was filled with hurt and trying desperately to find healing. I have since watched how God has redeemed this part of my story, not just for me, but as a reminder that he can redeem even the most broken of us. That hole in my heart that I sought to fill with everything that culture was selling, eventually led me right back to the healing arms of my savior… where I belonged the entire time. Let this be a warning to you of the deceptive nature of your emotions, and how they may be telling a completely different story. If you listened last week then maybe you'll remember, “You may be wrong about you.” I know I was. You don't have to do this alone though, Jesus is that healing balm and will love the sinful nature right out of you - if only we seek him and we seek him earnestly. __________________________ Join weekly for encouragement as we shed life on the words of our Father, as you remember that He is the God that Sees You, and He is the God that Sees Me, too. Sunday, October 15, 2023The tapestry of human history is woven, sadly, with many stories and images of violence, retribution and suffering. This week, the events of Hamas and Israel add another bloody strand to this tapestry. The parable Jesus tells this week (Matthew 22:1-14) reflects a violent world, one in which God seems a participant in this violence. While this is not shocking, it is disturbing to consider the role of God in the violence of human history. Pastor Rob offers counsel from Martin Luther – do not seek to unmask God (read God's will from the annuls of history) but rather seek to find the cross of Christ (see places where God's mercy and reconciliation are breaking in). This movement to see the cross of Christ in Scripture and in life is a bold move, made in faith. The photo is of the Bayeux Tapestry accessed through the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh website.

What You Need to Know is don't let them lie about inflation and the economy. What we're dealing with is no longer just a struggle for every dollar to matter. Americans are losing hope that they can even make it. Gas, groceries — even borrowing money is all skyrocketing! People aren't just giving up a few things in the budget, they are giving up altogether. It's terrible. The pliable Biden Administration statistics are lies, and we have to fight through them. Dr. Duke Pesta, tenured professor of English at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, executive director of Freedom Project Academy, prolific writer, speaker, and host of the Dr. Duke Show, joins Ed to discuss the domination of comprehensive sex education in our public schools. Dr. Pesta and Ed also discuss the large amount of money funding these sexuality programs in the education system, as well as the difficulty in advocating against these educational issues. Christina Bobb, journalist, attorney for President Trump, and author of Stealing Your Vote: The Inside Story of the 2020 Election and What It Means for 2024, joins Ed to discuss the stealing of the 2020 election and the advantaged position that the Democrats have. According to Christina, the Democrats have had to double down over the last few years against Trump with narratives like January 6th and the indictment. The more Democrats push this narrative, Christina tells Ed, the more likely it is to break. Wrap Up: Sen. Tommy Tuberville has put a hold on military promotions because of the Pentagon's abortion policies. The Biden Administration is injecting political positions and discourse into the military, and it's time to decouple. That's what Tuberville wants and he's absolutely right. Stop the politicization of our military! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode Highlights:04:48 - What we have to do is look inside of ourselves and try to figure out, "What did we wake up this morning to do? What is our purpose?" Moms Moving On: Navigating Divorce, Single Motherhood & Co-Parenting.
We often focus on what you should do during divorce and co-parenting, but this week we are going to focus on what NOT to do. Michelle Dempsey-Multack is joined by Divorce Attorney Seth Nelson, to have a candid conversation about things to avoid when going through a divorce and starting your co-parenting journey. Michelle and Seth will take a behind the scenes look at: How to respond when your ex meets someone new Picking and choosing your battles on physical items Putting emotions aside when deciding what is best for your children Making decisions based on the needs of children vs the parent AND MUCH MORE! Seth Nelson is the winner of TAPMPA Magazine's Top Divorce Attorney 2022 and Super Lawyer's Top Attorney 2022. Seth focuses on his client's interests, and balances reasonable settlement options with zealous representation. His approachable, empathic, no-nonsense style allows his clients to clearly understand the law and how it impacts their lives. “I tell clients what they need to know, even if it's not what they want to hear,” Seth says. “This way my clients understand the different potential outcomes and how we are going to get there, together.” Seth has been involved in thousands of cases as a lawyer and as a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator. With his professional and personal life experiences, and his sound legal judgment, he has a keen ability to bring common sense solutions to difficult problems. “The complexity of modern life and how it relates to complex divorce litigation, especially in high-net-worth cases and cases dealing with children, demands a lawyer who has a diverse set of skills,” Seth says. Finally, Seth understands that the legal system cannot solve all issues that families deal with in a divorce. That is why he hosts his podcast, How to Split a Toaster, which gives non- legal practical suggestions for anyone who is contemplating, going through or has completed a divorce. Episodes include, “Now You Are Alone” and “But What About the Dog” and “Post- divorce Dating.” In its seventh season, it is available wherever you get your podcasts. Seth was divorced when his child was very young and can relate to his clients' issues. HE confesses, “I am a self-proclaimed workaholic because divorce doesn't conveniently happen between 9 to 5, and I like to be there for my clients.” However, when he is not working, he enjoys recharging his batteries by spending time with his son, being on or around the water and playing with his two mini-dachshunds, known as “The Hots.” Education: University of Florida, J.D. It's no secret that teachers are leaving education in droves. So much so that it's causing drastic shifts in the ways schools will need to operate this fall. Some large school districts have as many as one thousand teacher job openings and this issue is only getting worse as post-pandemic educators are facing low wages, rising benefits costs, extreme student discipline problems, and polarizing politics. This is a crisis that has surpassed the traditional definition of a shortage. I have talked with several thought leaders about this issue, including Mandy Froehlich, who I met during one of Nicole Biscotti's Coffee Conversations on Zoom.Mandy Froehlich is a former elementary teacher, technology integration specialist, and director of innovation and technology for a number of schools in Wisconsin. She is currently an educational consultant, an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and the chief operating officer of EduMatch Publishing. Mandy has written four books: The Fire Within, Reignite the Flames, Divergent EDU, and the Educators Matchbook. In this episode, we speak to Mandy about meeting teachers' basic needs, mental health support for educators, and recommendations for how leadership can support current workloads in education.Podcast Planner for Teachers and StudentsFlipboard EDU Magazine Flipboard Educators Blog Flipboard EDU Podcast Website 411 Immunitea Our focus is solely on creating natural products that leave you feeling happy and healthy.
