We're deep into spooky season, so let's take a look back at the strange wave of profane, silly, borderline sleazy zombie games the industry pumped out in the late-'00s/early-'10s, with help from TL Foster of Welcome to the Thing! Then we'll talk more about Metaphor: ReFantazio, Europa, the Game Freak data breach, and your most irrational habits when playing games. Question of the Week: What's your favorite zombie game? We loved having bandleader and drummer/percussionist Dom Palombi back to talk about his new album, Dom Palombi's Game Night! Vol. 2. There are about twice as many musicians on this album than on Vol. 1, with what Dom describes as more personal track choices than before. The musicianship is just beyond measure, and it's a fun, adventurous, delightful, funky romp through some great tunes. The three originals are fantastic. ENJOY! Join us on Discord for free. Is it enough that we have to cover the most prolific pop artist of the 21st Century? Apparently not, so join us as we do a deep dive into the one and only TAYLOR SWIFT, alongside mega fan and friend WOODY BOND (JER/Vacancy/Skatune Network) As part of the continuation of the "Simply THE FEST" Marathon, featuring guests performing at this year's THE FEST in late October. Find out how private jets work, why John's notes are absolutely terrible, and see if the impressions Jay and Devin perform OF John do the man justice in the long run. Scowl is one of a handful of new hardcore bands blowing up at the moment. And, more importantly, they are a band with ska roots. Specifically, their bassist Bailey Lupo, who used to play bass in San Jose ska-punk band The Caps (or CAPS). So, we brought them on to get all the deets on their ska past. Bailey told us about packing records at Asian Man Records as a teen. (They begged Mike Park to release the Scowl record in 2020, but he passed). Bailey talked about recently meeting JER in Gainsville and vowed to our audience that, one day, Scowl would collaborate with Skatune Network. And they talked about the bands that influenced The Caps: The Specials, Choking Victim and a whole slew of surf bands. But we got even deeper and talked about the late 2000s/early 2010s San Jose punk scene they came from and talked about legendary groups like Leer, Hard Girls (featuring Jeff Rosenstock's guitarist Mike Huguenor), Monstrauss (Who played ska & grunge ie Skunge), Matsuri, Stickup Kid and Point of View. And of course, we had to talk about San Jose's weirdest punk venue, Nickel City. Hyper Ska artist Eichlers wrote a song about the venue on their sophomore record. We also talk about touring with Limp Bizkit, what it was like to have thousands of kids show up to their Real Bay Shit shows, seeing Laura Stevenson at a backyard BBQ in San Jose, and we discuss the horrible Punknews comments they sifted through every day. Most importantly, we talked about Adam and Aaron's old band, Gnarboots! Support the show

Way back in Hornpod episode 001 JJ and Matt told you how they defined ska. In this latest episode, they're putting it to the test! First we sit down with Dan Lord and Adam Guthrie of the band Salvo. We talk about the 1990's when the "horn punk" band was called Pain. We talk about the long hiatus and triumphant return, including their new album The Traveler, out August 26th via Asbestos Records. What do the guys think of Skatune Network's cover of the Pain song "Jabberjaw"? Why is it important that their fans know they don't play ska? And then, at long last, we submit releases by Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution and Streetlight Manifesto to the Hornpod Ska Canon. Was Tomas Kalnoky talking about doing the BOTAR project before he even left Catch-22? How old are some of these songs, actually? Why don't we talk about Streetlight Manifesto as an ethnic folk-punk band? And which of Tohkay's 21st century albums are Canon-worthy? All this and more in the least ska edition of Hornpod: a Ska Podcast yet!

Hello friends!! On today's episode of the Ska Punk International podcast, I talk to Emily and Joe from Take Today. Last year, Take Today released the excellent Skadiving EP that also features a cover of Link 80's classic 'Up to the Top.' Skadiving is a re-imagining of their previously released song 'Skydiving.'Both songs on the EP feature a huge roster of guest stars from bands like Flying Raccoon Suit, Matamoska, Catbite and Omnigone. I talked with Joe and Emily about how they balanced all of that without losing the soul of what made the original song so great. We also talk about some of Take Today's history, Joe and Emily's other projects and spent a lot of time answering extremely unhinged questions from the SPI Patreon.Listen everywhere you find podcasts!Check out more music from Take Today on Bandcamp: https://taketoday.bandcamp.comGrab Take Today's Skadiving split on cassette here: https://www.skapunkinternational.com/product/take-today-skadiving-up-to-the-top-cassingleCheck Take Today playing live on the Left of the Dial livestream Saturday April 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl505w1irRoListen to the new album from Emily's other project How I Became Invisible this Friday, April 8 here: http://howibecameinvisible.comFollow Take Today on Twitter: https://twitter.com/taketodayFollow Take Today on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/taketoday/---Support Ska Punk International on Patreon for as little as $1 here: https://www.patreon.com/skapunkinternationalYou can email the show at skapunkinternational@gmail.com. Twenty-five years ago, I would have never guessed that the bedroom recording aesthetic would eventually overlap with the ska scene. But, in 2022, you have Kmoy and Tape Girl, who are referring to their music as "Laptop Ska," which it turns out, is a great descriptor. Their recordings carry the lo-fi, compressed quality of 4-track indie-rock artists, but it somehow blends with these grandiose concepts and overdubs galore.Kmoy and Tape Girl are two separate projects. But they are best friends and play on each other's songs. And they are creating some of the most interesting, adventurous recordings in ska right now. Tape Girl's handful of EPs are unique and fantastic, while Kmoy's Precure LP is a Ska Opera of epic proportions. The thing that makes all of their recordings so interesting is that, unlike most ska artists, these are songs crafted on their computer with no consideration for how they will sound live, kind of like the early Bomb the Music Industry records. In this episode, we get into the nitty-gritty of their production techniques. They are firm believers in adding tape hiss to the recordings. We also talk about friend-to-every-ska-band, Megawave, and all the various eclectic artists that influence Kmoy and Tape Girl: Car Seat Headrest, Fantasia, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Who, Dynastic, and of course Skatune Network.Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. On this episode of Ska Punk International, hyperska superstar Eichlers is here to do a full track by track breakdown of his new album, My Checkered Future.Eichlers has previously been on the show and is one of my favorite people. It's always so much fun to have him on but it's ESPECIALLY fun when I get to talk about new music with him. My Checkered Future is without a doubt one of the most innovative ska albums of all-time. I'm so honored that he was willing to spend time breaking it all down with me. If you haven't checked it out yet, hopefully this break down will help you realize how much thought and production went into the album and you'll give it a shot.Listen here:Watch video for 'Things U C In Me" here: https://youtu.be/eXVhTLnRGNgGrab the album on vinyl here: https://badtimerecords.limitedrun.com/products/720615-eichlers-my-checkered-future-lpDownload the album on Bandcamp here: https://eichlers.bandcamp.com/album/my-checkered-futureEichlers Live Photo by: Alec Pugliese---Support Ska Punk International on Patreon for as little as $1 here: https://www.patreon.com/skapunkinternationalYou can email the show at skapunkinternational@gmail.com. One of the best things about ska is that it's such a flexible genre. You can mix it with soul music, black metal, or anything in-between. There have even been different artists that have mixed electronic music with ska over the years, but now Eichlers is taking the weirdo, Avante-Garde-meets-pop sensibilities of Hyperpop and using that as a foundation for what he's calling "Hyperska." What does hyperska (or even Hyperpop for that matter) sound like? You're going to have to listen to our interview with the subgenre's innovator to find out. We talk to Russ Wood (aka Eichlers) about his influences, which includes 100 gecs, Joan of Arc, El Ten Eleven, Johnny Foreigner, The Matches, Slapstick, Spraynard, Vantana Row, and much more. We also learn about his time in the San Jose punk scene (The same scene that Adam and Aaron used to be part of with their band Gnarboots). Russ also apologizes to Mike Park for being a picky eater while he was interning at Asian Man Records, and Adam spits a killer Boboso verse about toast. Be sure to check out Eichlers new record on Bad Time Records. It features guest appearances by Skatune Network, Tape Girl, Boboso, and even our own beloved co-host, Adam Davis.Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. On this week's episode, Adrian chats with Allen Brasch, the owner and editor-and-chief of GameGrooves. Founded in 2018, GameGrooves aims to celebrate the Videogame Music community with blogs, podcasts and albums that feature music artists from a number of genres. Allen details the origins of GameGrooves as well as the events that lead up to the company's most successful album to date: A ska tribute to the music for the game Mario Kart 64 entitled Skario Kart, which features music by Skatune Network, Tape Girl & more. Adrian & Allen also provide their thoughts on the ever-evolving videogame music cover scene, their love of Sonic Adventure 2 and the ambitious 2022 Album Challenge.
In 2020, Chicago indie-pop group Beach Bunny released their debut LP Honeymoon to much acclaim. One of the people that fell in love with the album, was Jeremy Hunter, ie Skatune Network. It was one of their favorite records of the year. Just a month earlier, they'd recorded a cover of an earlier Beach Bunny tune, “Prom Queen.” After Honeymoon was released, they considered covering another Beach Bunny song. Instead, they recorded the entire album. Jer did this project in secrecy, not even telling Beach Bunny's singer/songwriter Lili Trifilio until it was nearly finished, earlier this year. And then on Valentine's Day, they surprise-released it to the world—Beach Bunny's record in its entirety, but all ska, and titled Honeyrude and complete with some delightful ska easter eggs that reference The English Beat, Bob Marley, and The Specials. On this episode, we bring on Jeremy Hunter and Lili Trifilio to talk about Honeyrude. We talk to Lili about what inspired the original record, learn about Jer's process of transposing the album to ska, and get her reaction to the record. We analyze this album from all angles to understand what makes ska unique, and why a ska cover of a non-ska song is so infectious when it's done right. If you’ve found yourself on Twitter during the pandemic, you might have noticed Pabst Blue Ribbon tweeting about everything from pro-wrestling to milk to ska. And these ska tweets haven’t been generic mainstream 90s ska memes. No, Pabst has expressed their undying affection for Asian Man Records, MU330, and has even released several “Rat Jamz” mixes that include new ska bands like Catbite, Kill Lincoln, We Are The Union, Grey Matter, Bad Operation, and Omnigone. But who is Pabst? We did some deep digging and found out that the Pabst social media manager is Corey Smale. And get this…Corey played in a Missouri ska band in the late 90s/early 2000s. Obviously, we needed to bring him on the podcast and tell us his entire ska story. But first, the three of us determined which beverage is the most ska. Was it Pabst, Arizona, Surge, or Ska Brewing? Listen and find out! Plus Corey tells us that the Rat Jamz were curated by Get Tuff, who you might have seen do guest vocals on Skatune Network’s cover of Britney Spears “Toxic.” We also discuss Eve 6, Corey’s band opening for MU330, and we make a deal for Pabst to sponsor a Catbite cartoon! We even suggest the plot for episode 1 be a dramatic retelling of their heroic journey to rescue Mannequin Pussy’s stolen van. Hopefully Pabst makes this happen! Subscribe at aaroncarnes.substack.com

Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon. In this episode, I'm speaking with Mike Sosinski -- who is the guitarist and lead singer of ska punk band Kill Lincoln and also the head honcho of Bad Time Records, a ska punk label based in Alameda, California. Bands on the Bad Time label include many of the bands now making waves in the American ska and ska punk scene and beyond including Kill Lincoln, We Are The Union, Catbite, Bad Operation, Skatune Network, Omnigone and more. We had a far ranging conversation that touched on Mike's ska "lightning bolt" moment, what is was like to grow up in the New Jersey ska scene of the early 2000's, the origin of the Kill Lincoln name and why ska punk is polarizing to parts of the ska community and why the success of the diverse range of bands on the Bad Time label is good for everyone in ska. He also shares what its like to run a DIY record label and market new ska punk music. Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act. The law allows for use of music clips for purposes of criticism, comment, and news reporting.

If there is one person that may be holding the ska community together, it may be Brent Friedman, who is our guest this week. Brent is known within the greater ska scene for being the drummer for We Are The Union, Skatune Network & Omnigone, but he also works very hard behind the scenes for Bad Time Records, Suicide Machine & Skatune Network among others. Growing up in Huntington Beach, CA, Brent fell in love with the ska scene, and soon became well known as "that ska guy" (much to his chagrin), eventually opting to wear it as a badge of pride and taking it as far as creating his social media handle @pleasetagmeinyourskaposts to solidify the truth that YES, he is in fact THAT SKA GUY! As a true defender of the genre, he has spent a good portion of his adult life affiliated with some of the biggest names in the ska world, and as is laid out in our discussion, he is beyond proud of where ska has gotten during the last few years, and his role in that. We spend some time learning about how he got involved in the various projects that he works with. We dig into the role that "Ska Twitter" plays in keeping things within the scene buzzing, and we reflect a bit on whether or not there is potential 'danger' of ska potentially falling out of favor again (psst... it never went away in the first place, so the answer is NO!). He also provides some artists that you should have on your radar, as well as his 5 desert island albums. In December 2016, multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Hunter got bored and decided to record a ska cover of “Feliz Navidad,” calling it “Feliz NaviSKA.” This silly idea got a lot of eyeballs, way more than they anticipated, so Jeremy kept recording ska covers of songs by Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182 and other groups. The views continued to grow. This was the birth of SkaTune Network, a YouTube channel with nearly 200,000 subscribers, and several viral videos. Jeremy is our guest on In Defense of Ska. They have shocked countless people outside of the ska scene who’ve assumed the music is dead, and can’t fathom how Jeremy has so many fans. SkaTune Network has also become an entry point for ska that has brought thousands of people to the genre. Additionally, Jeremy also plays trombone in the band We Are The Union and creates original music as “Jer.”On today’s episode, we walk through Jeremy’s career in ska, focusing on several key moments in their life, including the Talent Farm, their introduction to Community Records, and joining We Are The Union. We also discuss Jeremy’s time at Waffle House, winning PUP’s “Free at Last” cover competition, and that controversial TikTok video they made that argues why you should pour your milk before your cereal. Okay yall this is episode 4 of Season 2 & we are still supremely grateful for the support of the #unitycommunity. We know you have lots of options when it comes to spending time listening to folks talk about Ska but we hope that we have been providing you all a different perspective & take on the subculture from an angle that helps you expand your own viewpoint on the scene. That being said we got a really informative & FRESH take on SKA with this episode because we have on the Checkered Cast; The CEO of SKA - JER of Skatune Network! (https://www.facebook.com/Skatunenetwork/) If you think that is a bold statement to claim well we invite you to listen to the episode to find out WHY they are the CEO of SKA. We also mention in this episode that we recorded this interview with Jer on Transgender visibility day and that Jer is a non-binary person who uses the pronouns THEY/THEM. Real talk they are constantly misgendered by folks & it's unfortunate that the labor of educating people falls onto the person who experiences the harm of being erased by gender norms so we hope that we are doing a small part to spread the awareness of ASKING SOMEONE THEIR DAMN PRONOUNS & not making assumptions. Don't make asses out of you & me, just ask! And if you refuse to respect pronouns we are going to have to identify as A FKN PROBLEM. In this episode we talk to Jer about being a SKAlebrity aka how strange it is to have such a huge platform to speak about all things ska, how they built their social media empire(278k on TikTok, 190k on YouTube, 91k on Facebook, 38k on Instagram, 34k on Twitter) being on Vice.com, name drops on BrooklynVegan & supporting themself through Patreon as well as being a musician for hire (https://www.patreon.com/Skatunenetwork) & what we ALL chat about what we want to see being done better in the music industry post COVID lockdowns to make it a safer space for all. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCji2l5wcs6GoYJY1GgG_slQ) “Anything you can do, they can do SKA. Skatune Network is what happens when you get a person who really likes ska, as well as not ska, but wants to hear the not ska as ska, SO they use their skill to be kinda ok at every part of a band to re-create songs that aren't ska as ska songs.” This episode was recorded while Jer was on a roadtrip to California so there were a little bit of technical issues but hopefully you wont even notice in the edit. Don't forget to show your support for their music & talent by following them on social media, sharing their music, & GET THAT FIRE MERCH! (https://www.skatunenetwork.com/) Checkered Cast would also super appreciate it if you showed us some support by smashing the like button on the our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/checkeredcast), follow us on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/checkeredcast/), & stay in touch with us through our social media by dropping us a line at our Anchor.fm (https://anchor.fm/checkeredcast). If you are not already part of the Supernova Ska Community Facebook group that Tara runs & are planning to attend the festival definitely go join the group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1236185059917263). We have a Ska Chat Happy Hour every thursday on zoom (7pm-10pm EST) come chat with other ska folks just like you would outside the venue between bands! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/checkeredcast/message
Really From is a podcast of the band Really From hosted by me, Chris Lee-Rodriguez, where I talk to musicians and artists on identity, culture, and inhabiting white spaces in the music scene. On this episode, I talked to Jeremy Hunter of Skatune Network, JER, and We Are the Union about intergenerational trauma, surviving white supremacy, and merging the personal and political in our music. Jer is a day one homie, and I'm so happy we got to go deep in this conversation. Brent Lawrence Friedman has seen all sides of the music industry. He’s booked tours and done marketing for various ska and punk band (MxPx, Goldfinger, Five Iron Frenzy, Mr. T. Experience). His current gig is “merch fulfillment” for Skatune Network, Kill Lincoln, and other ska groups. He also plays drums in the group We Are The Union. When he’s not doing any of those things, he’s frantically posting about ska on social media, and getting tagged in literally every ska meme—a role he’s come to embrace. His Instagram and Twitter handle is @pleasetagmeinyourskaposts. I first interviewed Brent (along with Jeremy Andrew Hunter) back in 2018 for my book, In Defense of Ska. We Are The Union were on tour with Reel Big Fish, and so I chatted with them backstage at their Reno show. I wanted to get both of their takes on what it’s like to be entirely identified for liking ska, to have everyone refer to you as a “ska person,” and to feverishly tag you in all online ska content. For Brent, his non-stop online ska talk started as a joke, but he saw that some people were genuinely appreciating his ska persona. “The ska thing is always a butt end of the joke. After a while it started annoying me to where I started defending ska on social media,” Brent told me. “I started talking about ska a lot. I became an exaggerated version of what these people thought I was. Then ska kids in bands across the country would tell me, ‘Man I love that you defend ska so hard.’ Apparently, this is making some people happy. I’m just going to keep f*****g doing it.” On this episode of In Defense of Ska, Brent tells us the full story of how he went from We Are The Union super-fan to being their drummer. He gives us some insight on the business side of DIY ska including a glimpse behind the scenes of We Are The Union’s Self-Care Kickstarter campaign, and how he came to book the infamous Jesse Michaels/Leftover Crack concert that was eventually covered in Vice. We also talk about how truly awful most ska jokes are when they come from ska-haters. Can’t they at least learn a little bit about the music and subculture first? Hello and welcome back to Rate-a-loid. This week we talk about Sonika, the world’s first twitter Vocaloid! Jonathan also does a Gundam summary as usual, this time featuring Gundam F91 and a character’s cuck mask, how war is hell, and the where to actually start. We also plug various games, Skatune Network, and do an extended sidebar about Sonic the Hedgehog cause we’re awful. Sonika holds a lot of firsts in the Vocaloid world in regards to fan interaction and the idea of fan interactions but ultimately might be a little uninteresting? Nerdcore hip-hop entered mainstream consciousness in 2016 when a contestant on Jeopardy mentioned being a fan of the genre. Then, host Alex Trebek made a joke about fans of the genre being losers. Mega Ran, one of the main figures nerdcore (Hip-hop that focuses on video games, comic books, anime and other “nerd” topics) posted a diss back at Trebek. It quickly turned into a full on diss track with every major nerdcore rapper. At shows, Mega Ran had the audience shout, “Suck it Trebek!” Today we show how nerdcore is connected to ska. This year, Mega Ran released a kids album called Buddy's Magic Toy Box, which has a ska song (“Recess”) on it. He modeled the song, after “Super Rad!” by The Aquabats. And he brought on Jer from Skatune Network as well as Stacked Like Pancakes to play on the track. It's a killer song. Mega Ran's relationship to ska goes even deeper. MC Lars introduced him to several artists in the genre years back. They'd listen to ska while on tour. Mega Ran loves the genre so much, he proudly wears a shirt that says, “Ska and Pro Wrestling are the Only Legitimate Forms of Art.” We discuss all of this as well as other tracks on Mega Ran's record, Buddy's Magic Toy Box. There's songs about fruit, bullying, self-esteem and one on the history of rap music. It's got a reggae groove as a tip of the hat to DJ Kool Herc and the genre's Jamaican roots. We also talk about how Mega Ran got a song in Kevin Smith's film Clerks 3. We talk about chip/ska artist Lo(u)ser ie Chris Graue. We discuss video game math rock band The Minibosses who famously cover the DuckTales theme song at their shows, and we talk about Mega Ran's new music festival in Yuma, AZ called Dream Master Mixtape Music Festival. Former IDOS guests AJJ and Open Mike Eagle played the festival this year. Plus, with the help of IDOS friend Dane Jackson, we ask Mega Ran several pro-wrestling questions.
