Monique Powell and her band Save Ferris are back out on the road. (When are they not?) And on top of that, they have a new single, "Get Dancing," which, on top of being a fun song is good life advice. To find out when they are playing near you, check out their website.
Skanking and spitting bars from the arse-end of nowhere, DeadBeat At Dawn are Yorkshire's punk/ska/hiphop crossover beasts and they've lent us one of their vocalists. Aaron, to give us the lowdown. We discuss surviving the doldrum years of Ska, the international Ska scene, touring with some legends and borrowing lyrics.Post apocalyptic movies, old UK television shows about high school and a rumble with a singer from down under are also chatted about.Tom's watched a film he'd like to recommend, Niallism's burnt his head off, there's a social experiment that Tom's carried out on himself and everything else you've learned not to hate and just put up with.Music this week is by: Polysics, The Bad Ups, Bad Religion, The Carolyn and Off With Their Heads
Don't be scared by the title! In light of the controversies surrounding Bosstones singer Dicky, Rob makes an impassioned plea to reconsider the scene contributions of the bands legacy. First, Rob and Engineer Joey pick it up with a conversation about he carnival and IMAX movies before doing a shallow dive on the Coles Notes history of MMB from their heavy metal early days to the coining of the term Skacore to their blockbuster success. All the while, Rob plays clips, shares some historical context and champions the real stars of the band from Joe Gittleman to Johnny Vegas to Ben Carr. Dicky BarrettTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Richard Michael Barrett. Better know as Dicky; he is also called The Godfather of Skacore. Dicky is former frontman and founding member of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and current frontman and founder of the new super group The Defiant. In this episode, we chat about how he came to be the bow-tied plaid leader of The Bosstones, and some of the cool things he got to do along the way. He tells the story of getting to open for The Misfits while he was still in high school, as well as getting to play Fenway Park many years later. Dicky shares stories of meeting and befriending Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel when they were just getting started; and some of the fun things he got to do as a result of these friendships. Adam uses Bosstones' songs in the intro and outro of his Adam Carolla Show podcast; and Dicky was the announcer for Jimmy Kimmel Live for nearly 20 years. Of course, I ask Dicky if I can play my all time favorite MMB song... and he says yes! Obviously we discuss how MMB ended up in the cult classic iconic film Clueless, and what made them decide to do it. Next, Dicky explains what happened between him and the other Bosstones, as well as his relationship with the Jimmy Kimmel Live late night show. Finally, we discuss his new band The Defiant. This super group features former members of: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Offspring, Smash Mouth, Street Dogs, and The Briggs. The Defiant is: Pete Parada, Greg Camp, Johnny Rioux, Joey LaRocca, and Dicky Barrett. Their debut album "If We're Being Honest" was released in late October 2023. Naturally I ask him if I can play my favorite song from this new album.... and Dicky said yes again! I had such a blast talking with Dicky, I think we are best friends now! Don't be surprised if you hear more from Dicky on Fascination Street Podcast. This dude is rad as balls. Thanks Dicky! And thanks Mike Dawson, you know what you did.

Hans Gruber and the Die Hards came out of the pandemic swinging and ready to take over the ska scene. The band formed in 2014 in Austin, Texas, went through some lineup changes (A big lineup change a few years ago!) and then released their excellent record, With A Vengence, in May 2022 on SPI Records. They want to get the word out and have been touring as much as possible. The group mixes ska with furious hardcore, cumbia, silly singalongs, and whatever else they feel like throwing in the mix. And they bring a stage show filled to the brim with bizarre antics that involve sock puppets, conga lines, copious guest horns and exercise classes. Today we speak with three members of the group: Chris Thompson, Rosey Armstrong and Kurt Armstrong. We talk about Die Hard lore, and whether the film is in fact a remake of A Christmas Carol. We talk about their long tours and the methods they employ to save money (Forage for nuts in the forest, get free cheese from members of The Best of the Worst). We also talk about Kurt's blackeye and why the band members are the undisputed Gods of Dairy. We also talk about the squirrels in Adam's backyard and Christian rock groups like Lust Control, DC Talk, One Bad Pig and Rich Mullins. We talk about Hans' experience being on the Ska Parade tour a few years back. And they talk about The Slackers, Slackfest and missing veggie trays. Plus we talk about a very controversial topic: Kurt's underwear Support the show

After the '90s, skacore got a lot heavier. One of the reasons for this was Sussex, New Jersey band Folly, who took the heaviest elements of hardcore, metalcore and mixed it with ska. They also did so in a way that emphasized the genres similarities, as opposed to their differences. Though the band struggled to find a significant audience in the 2000s, they would find that years after they broke up, not only did they have an obvious impact on newer, younger bands, but they suddenly fit in with this scene in a way unlike when they were a heavy touring, active band. This week, we talk to Folly members Arben Colaku and Jon Tummillo. We discuss the band's history, their unique philosophy to songwriting and talk about what it's been like for them years after their initial breakup in 2008. We also talk about what a big influence Converge was on them, and conclude that, therefore, Converge played an important role on the development of ska!We also discuss Anthony Fantano name-dropping the group when he interviewed me, Folly signing to Triple Crown Records, local DIY shows at The Phone Booth, and how "Hey!" by The Suicide Machines was a life-changing song for the group. We talk about how they turned disastrous shows into fun adventures. We also break down some of their songs, and we talk about a time they ate so many meatballs before a show in Connecticut that they had to play with the meat sweats. Support the show

today we got JOYSTICK! on the program & they're talking about their new LP, 'I Can't Take It Anymore', out everywhere April 16th! The collaboration by Stomp Records and Bad Time Records introduces 15 new songs from the New Orleans rockers themselves and trust me when I say it 100% packs circle pit slammers. Shout out to Duck (vocals), Clay (bass), and Andrew (trombone) for giving us their time to chat! Promo artwork provided by Juan Sebastian Garzon.
today we're chatting with east bay ska punker ADAM DAVIS - currently the front man for Omnigone, Adam shares with us his story starting out playing in bands like Link 80 and Flat Planet, to today being apart of the Bad Time Records family w/ Omnigone. Shout out to Flying Raccoon Suit for their time and conversation! Promo artwork provided by Juan Sebastian Garzon.
Today on the show we have LUDVIG GUR, film director responsible for the August 2020 documentary, 'Pretending I'm A Superman'; a film dedicated to the legacy of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. This interview was a personal one for me as I've actually been a follower of Ludvig's content for a while now. Going back to his YouTube channel, Icebears 4ever, I found his Tony Hawk video game content something I genuinely related to and enjoyed watching. I stumbled upon his channel years ago when I was revisiting an online wikia site dedicated to the series as well (of course, Tony Hawk's Games Wiki) in which I had a hand in writing articles for in my freshmen and sophomore years of high school. Once revisiting that site after graduating high school, I had a hunch to look up THPS videos, which led me to Ludvig's channel. After being a subscriber of his for a while, he started to announce his plans for working on a documentary about the series - to see it unfold the way that it has with it's righteous unveiling last year in August was certainly something to see for all Tony Hawk's Pro Skater fans everywhere. Many thanks to Ludvig for his time and conversation! Shout out to Tony Hawk and Neversoft for the memories!! Promotional artwork for this episode provided by Juan Sebastian Garzon.

6-piece SKA band The Meddlers enjoys creating a big band sound out of their horn section, while still maintaining their Ska Core roots. Trevor learns more about music this episode! We're so proud of him, he learns about horns...yeah, he didn't know what a 'horn section' in a ska band was. A little bit more technical, he also learns what a musical "exchange" between instruments is. Regardless of that, The Meddlers have created a unique listening experience that brings you through a few different musical styles. Alex and Jonathan talk about the melding of different influences from all the members, including bands outside the Ska scene, including Squirrel Nut Zippers and Leftover Crack. Their multitude of experiences adds a sense of experience to this young band. Formed only in 2015, they have already played with some of the well-knowns like The Toasters and the hispanic band Sektacore. Their writing style also shows their expansive forms, where one or two members would create a melody line and the rest of the band helps finish the song. These guys work as a team and play as a team. It's tough with 6 members...took them awhile to even settle on "The Meddlers" as a band name, but it led them to a beautifully simple logo and a bad joke by Trevor. This band is #HereToStay. Make sure and check them out at www.themeddlersmusic.com or on their Facebook at facebook.com/themeddlersmusic/ - Check them out on the Dusty Futon!
Phew, we've finally made it to the end of Skatoberfest! I'm not gonna lie, it was somewhat exhausting doing all these extra episodes and I did it in the name of ska. Can't say I saw that coming when I started the show. Given that Marty started the series, we had to wrap things up with super producer Dan. I ventured back to Friesen Point Studios and let Dan pick out his favorite Mighty Mighty Bosstones album. Dude grew up LOVING this band and it's pretty clear as we get into it their history. We're gonna get back to regular programming again next week and fret not, I'm not gonna follow through with Dan's suggestion to do OurLadyPeacevember. No way in hell. Louis Lingg mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent | unedited videoI did a little better on show notes this time. Dogmazic.net is cool!Jamendo is Luxemborg, not French.Jamendo has been unfriendly and banning people. What does "punk" mean to you?Punk rock is political. ALWAYS. Politics is similarCrass! Josh grew up in England. Thatcher is dead!Last time we spoke, things were bad. Are things better in France?Government has changed. Now there is a socialist government. That's the only thing that has changed! Still hunting down immigrants. No human value.French socialism!France cannot welcome all the misery of the world. People that say that are idiots! Immigrants make new innovations! That's why America used to be great.Fascism is there to say "it's all the immigrants fault."What are your touring plans?Always doing crazy concerts. They played in an old mineshaft with insane anarchist squatters in the suburbs of Paris. A lot of luck with the band. Enough room for 200 people in the cave.Played in Berlin recently and got to see squats.Playing Paris all the time. Playing a new squat, aka "Jew Town".Brittany is just green.Acoustic shows all the time. New acoustic recordings coming soon. Getting better at acoustic shows. Police have decibel meters and such bars down. Basically, music is illegal. Some of your stuff is under BY-SA and some is under -NC, why is that?Just trying stuff out. With AF Music (http://www.af-music.de/en/bands/) which started releasing under CC ~6 years ago.Not to be confused with AF Records (http://www.a-frecords.com/) or the Air Force (http://www.afmusic.org/)What are some of your favorite CC punk artists?Pete VylerIf you want to know more, check out the interview Tom and I did with Josh last year.

The Wildmp3 audio | ogg audio | torrentI apologize for the long hiatus loyal Punkcast listeners. I don't have any ETA on when I'll be back. I finish law school in very late April though, so I'm hoping some time after that I can get back in the swing of things. The first thing I need to do is go back through the Music Manumit catalog and see if there is anything I need to re-release. I doubt there is. If there was, I probably would have thought to do it like I am doing now.Anyway, enjoy this interview with Witt from folk punk band The Wild!
mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent | unedited videoThis summer, I plan on doing interviews every other week with punk artists of various types from all over the world. David Rovics is American, but is currently touring in Scotland. He sat down with me for 20 minutes or so talk to punk music, politics and more. I couldn't really take notes like I normally do when Tom and I do shows together. The plus side of doing these summer shows is that I have ultimate flexibility with scheduling. The down side is that show notes are either not going to happen or will require going back and reconstructing them.I'd also like to apologize to David for taking so long to get this out. I was traveling last week and managed to get sick while doing so."I'm a Better Anarchist than You" by David Rovics (folk punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Halliburton Boardroom Massacre" by David Rovics (folk punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Why Don't They Play You On The Radio?" by David Rovics (folk punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website
It's been way too long, so I thought we should have a quickie. Er... Well, you know what I mean, right?I probably wouldn't be sharing this particular track except that it comes from an album entitled "Experiments in Punk Pedagogy / Live at The New School" and I thought it might engender some discussion. So, is it punk?"Suicide" by Dreamweapon (other) - CC BY-NC-SA - WebsitePS: This is a subscriber exclusive. Since it's just a single track and the track is already on archive.org, I didn't bother iterating on archive.org. Rare release, just for you. ;)
In the spirit of being as random as possible in dispensing with remixable Creative Commons punk goodness, I have another show for you today!!!!mp3 audio | ogg audio | flac audioThis time, the unifying theme is my banshee plays. I use my phone sometimes and I have had other computers in the past and don't port over my plays, so this is a reasonable approximation of the tracks from the past year, but won't line up with Last.fm exactly.I did a similar thing on the main show, where there are no genre limitations (and a different list of previously played tunes)"Punknews is Stoked" by O Pioneers! (orgcore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Politic It's Shit" by Femau (trashcore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Hell Is Other People" by Imperial Leather (hardcore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website "Workout Pt. 2" by Indiana Jones (hardcore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Madonna is a Corporate Whore" by Louis Lingg and The Bombs (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Built to Fail, Motherfucker" by The Arrogant Sons of Bitches (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website "Whatever Song" by Eat Well Earl (instrumental punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Strings and Webs" by Wages of Fear (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website
This show is dedicated to Morten "Fucking-Long-Name".mp3 audio | ogg audio | flac audioFor this show I decided to go first through my Top 500 All-Time Last.fm tracks and pick the first 6 punk tracks I haven't played on the show that are remixable.116. "Class War" by Gråsuggorna (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website130. "75" by De Fuckups (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website*305. "On The Run" by Gråsuggorna (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website342. "You and Me" by Shearer (orgcore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website*Actually, I could have played more De Fuckups, but I didn't want them to take over the show. I didn't have enough in my Top 500 (without playing more De Fuckups), so this last two are from the Last Year list. Yes, these are both from the same band, so why discriminate against De Fuckups? I don't know. I guess I've just listened to them too much and am a bit tired of them at the moment. Also, their website appears to be down at the moment.13. "Conspiracy" by Louis Lingg and the Bombs (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website13. "Zapatista" by Louis Lingg and the Bombs (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website
Technically speaking, the re-post of Louis Lingg and The Bombs was the 7th show...I just failed to make it 007. What a huge fail. I hope so sweet tunes will make it up to you, even if it is just a repeat of my tracks from the latest Music Manumit show.ogg audio | mp3 audio(I figured I should get with the program now that I know what I'm doing a bit more in Audacity)"Love and Hate Tragedy" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Backstreet Emperor" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"My Kind" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"I Don't Care about You" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"All Around the World" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website"Failure (Acoustic live) - Bonus Track" by Pete Vyler (punk) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website

A few months ago I gave you the interview for Isaac Graham. This time I give you the interview with Joe of Copyleft Records. If the enclosure doesn't work for some reason, you can listen to the show courtesy the good people at archive.org.I am being lazy and not re-recording the intro. Deal with it. This is punk rawk suckas.
I couldn't be bothered to put together an intro. Law school is time-consuming. I let two months slip by and I just wanted to get some music out the door. You'll notice I didn't worry about the licensees being -NC or not, so no flattr button this time. I hope to do a couple more October shows to check up and maybe I'll go libre at that point. I also didn't worry about finding band websites (except for The Spunk Lads since I have that queued up for the main show already). You should be able to find the band websites from the song titles and band names. I hope not to be such a slacker in the future! If you have trouble finding them, let me know and I'll try to help.If the enclosure doesn't work for some reason, you can download the file courtesy of the good folks at archive.org."Spunk Lads FC" by The Spunk Lads (punk) - BY-NC-SA - WebsiteNote: the version on the website is not the version we are playing. I cut the version on the show since the track on the website is actually two songs."I Hate You Baby" by Jonny Chan and the New Dynasty 6 - CC BY-NC-SA"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" by Kingface - CC BY-NC-SA"Sheena" by Sidekick Lupchen & The Bad Generation - CC BY-NC-SADedication to my "lawyering" ;) (and the next song)"Fight Song" by Cletus Got Shot (bluegrass or "folk punk") - CC BY-NC-SA
It's a 2 for 1 deal today! Due to my slackness the June and July podcasts have come out today. I know it's poor podcasting form to release two in one day, but I'm a believer in the "release early and release often" philosophy. On the thought of releasing early and releasing often, I have found myself spending more time on the intros than I thought I would but I think that's because it's just me rather than a discussion with Tom. Things are so new and in flux that I have a lot to say as well. Eventually I hope to say "this is the Music Manumit Punkcast" and be done with it!Anyway, this show is a rerun of the Music Manumit Podcast interview with Australian singer/songwriter Isaac Graham. We discuss his punk roots, folk punk, his affiliation with Copyleft Record and more!Per usual, I'm releasing only in the open format ogg. You can download it from the amazing archive.org. If you have an Android phone, this file will work. Many browsers also have ogg support built in. As for media players, Songbird on Windows/Mac will play ogg files. If you want an mp3 version, let me know - just don't tell me you want it for an iPhone because I might not do it. I can get away with being a dick about it because this is punk rock baby!!
I missed June...sorta. I had the show up in June on archive.org. Well, the songs are still here and they are still rockin'!Download ogg*Per usual, if you want an mp3 version, let me know and I can make that happen.Tom's Picks - Punk tracks (in honor of Doug's upcoming punk music podcast)."Ten Dollars" by The Nunchaks (punk) - CC-BY-SA - Website"Copyleft Notice" by Out of Tune (punk) CC-BY-NC-sampling+ - Website"Have a Date" by Mr Feelix (punk) - CC-BY-NC-sampling+ - Website"Flash Freddy" by Zampano (punk) - CC-BY-Sampling+ - Website"Princess Mononoke" by Louis Lingg and the Bombs (punk) - CC-BY-NC-Sampling+ - Website
Eventually this will be a monthly punk*-only show of remixable Creative Commons music, brought to you my Doug of the Music Manumit Podcast. Many of the tracks will have been played on previous Music Manumit shows, but eventually I'll run out of punk songs from that show.Download ogg* (let me know if you want an mp3 version. I can make that happen, it'll just take more of my time. :) )"Uppkomlingen" - by Gråsuggorna - (punk) - CC-BY-NC-SA - Website"Punkpolice" - by Predator - (punk) - BY-SA-NC - Website"frustrator" - by NO SE (punk) - BY-SA-NC - Website"Punk Chicks" - by The A.G's (pop punk) - CC-BY - Website There's not likely to be a lot of pop punk on the show, but I like to reward groups that don't use the -NC. Also, this is a song *about* punk, so I feel it's relevant."Glass" by The Smashing Pumpkins (punk...just listen to it) off MACHINA II (an "unreleased album") - CC BY-NC-SA - WebsiteIf you have a better genre for this than punk, I'd be curious as to what people think of it."Something's Wrong" by Loudog (skacore) - CC BY-NC-SA - Website*punk, skacore, hardcore and the punkier post-hardcore. There will be very little, if any of what most people think of "post-punk". There will also be very little, if any of what is commonly known as "Emo-core" or "Screamo" (old-school or 'real screamo' may be a possibility)
