Very honored to bring you today's show with J. Niimi. He is a talented songwriter, musician and journalist who wrote the book about REM's Murmur for the prestigious 33 1/3 music series. It goes without saying that this album has had a profound impact on his personal and musical development. So much so, that in his words, there was no question as to what album he would want to write about. Or, if you like PJ Harvey, there's a good chance you'll also like our guests Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris, the duo that make up Charming Disaster from Brooklyn, NY! Both bands write songs that are complex and intriguing, without beating you over the head with high art. It's enjoyable on it's surface, but the deeper you peel into that onion, you could find yourself crying. This was a great conversation where not only do we find out a lot about what makes Charming Disaster tick, but how this album, Dry(1992), informed them since and still to this day, what the hell is happening in PJ's music and answers the question, "What's so interesting about Marie Curie?" Oh boy. That could be applicable to any number of situations brought about by this episode. My guest, Will Johnson, is, in my humble opinion, a behemoth of the indie folk rock scene. Partially in thanks to his collaborations with artists such as Jason Molina, Vic Chestnutt, and the Monsters of Folk crew(i.e. Connor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward and Mike Mogis). His particular brand of raw, introspective folk is completely captivating and singularly unique. With that being said, it is an absolute pleasure and honor for me to have had this conversation with him about a record that was inspiring to him on so many levels, that I'll just leave it to him to describe. Finally an opportunity to ask the question, "Does the influence of an album have the same effect on a film maker as a music maker?" And I was delightfully surprised by the answer Brandon gave. In addition, we touched upon many subjects including but no limited to Sonic Youth's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, the new feature film he's working on, Saint Drogo, and what it was like releasing a film during a pandemic. Most notably being the bass player for Thievery Corporation and GoGoGo Airheart, Hash has been a huge fan of all types of music for all his life, but let's be serious, that shit's gotta have some bass! Doom and gloomy, haunting, shoe-gazey, or gothic folk are ways that Marissa Nadler's music may be described. Those may very well be true, but I think there's more to her talent than that. And based on our conversation, there is a metamorphosis coming. Like all great artists, evolutions are inevitable and are typically gateways into the next big chapter of an artist's career. Some may look back and say that 2020 will be remembered as, maybe, the most challenging time of all of our lives. But some may look back on it as a time of rebirth and inner exploration. I am looking forward to what Marissa may make of this situation. On this episode we'll also discuss her early days in Providence, getting over stage fright, and of course, the music of Leonard Cohen.
