Dikembe Mutombo was one of the most beloved basketball players on the planet. Today we are throwing it back to one of our all-time episodes with the humanitarian and Hall of Famer to remember the pure joy he brought to the game of basketball and beyond.Originally aired on August 25th, 2020 Mr. No-No-No Dikembe Mutombo has a story so unbelievable it has to be true. Hear how he went from the Congo to Georgetown on an academic scholarship. How coach John Thompson found him at school and invited him to practice with Alonzo Mourning's squad. And how Dikembe got extra reps playing intramural ball — yes, intramural ball, dunking on everyday students. We hear about his record-breaking first big game in college, his summer battles with Zo and Patrick Ewing, and his decision to go pro. You learn how Bill Russell shaped his mind. And why the story about Jordan dunking on Dik was seven years in the making — and how Mutombo never hears the end of it. We hear about just how cold the business of the NBA really is. Why Atlanta was heaven for a Black Congolese. And the story behind Adidas's Mt. Mutombo basketball shoe. Y'all be shaking your heads with amazement during this one. The larger-than-life legend, Dikembe Mutombo. Tune in.
We recorded this Friday 4th October 2024 on some basketball stream-of-consciousness type shiiieet.. Apologies regarding the long form styling while watching some video. There is a video component developing for this podcast still in the works - I'm shooting for next episode we record. Wallzee and I ramble on covering many a tangent in this episode covering the NBL25 opening couple of rounds to the passing of some NBA Legends. Really gunna miss players like Dikembe and Joe. Based across Melbourne and Ballarat, Australia, this is Garbage Time Basketball - the basketball podcast that is NSFW as we dunk on anybody and anything basketball related. Wrap your ears around this audio delight and hear Rodney E, The Oracle and Big Wallzee deliver unfiltered basketball talk from the uniquely Australian perspective. Guest host ESPN legend Elle Duncan joins Shea to break down the WNBA conference finals. Top honors to Sabrina Ionescu, Jason Concepcion, and the New York Liberty for taking a commanding 2-0 lead against the two-time defending champs, Shea's beloved Las Vegas Aces. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx even up their series with a gutsy win over the Connecticut Sun, the Chicago Sky bail on head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season, and is the newly-traded Karl-Anthony Towns too soft to be a New York Knick? Later, Shea and Elle pay tribute to larger-than-life NBA great and finger wag god, Dikembe Mutombo.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

One of the best sports months on the calendar has arrived and so is the latest podcast delivering all of what is, has and will take place throughout the landscape. On deck: (6:40) October has us sports fans ready to witness the beginning of two new seasons (NHL & NBA), the height of two others (NFL & college football) and the conclusion of another (MLB) and that's where I'll begin. Leave it to the Mets to be the only team NOT to sweep the Wild Card round. I'll recap the first two matchups vs. the Brewers and delve into tonight's do or die game and who this'll fall squarely on ESPECIALLY, if they lose (ahem, Pete Alonso). I'll unpack the rest of the Wild Card Series which includes the red hot Detroit Tigers, the puzzling Houston Astros, the gritty Kansas City Royals, the disappointing Baltimore Orioles in the AL. The Padres look to be on a mission as they dispose the Atlanta Braves with ease. I'll preview the Division Series in both leagues with the big picture question, which team is facing the most pressure? The Yankees, Dodgers or Phillies? There's news regarding front office moves in STL & SF. Sending out prayers to former Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela as he needs to step away from the microphone to battle some health issues. And I'll remember Pete Rose as he passed away on Monday at 83. (55:43) Davante Adams wants out of Las Vegas. Where does he go? Is there a landing spot for him? What about Tyreek Hill? Does he want to go back to Kansas City? I'll see what the Week 5 schedule in the NFL looks like as there are a few games to look forward to. Also, the four game suspension handed down to Bills LB Von Miller. (1:08:33) College Football Week 6 is quite feeble, although you do have a National Championship rematch where #10 Michigan visits Washington on Saturday. (1:10:14) I'll look back at the life of Dikembe Mutombo who passed away on Monday at the age of 58. With training camps open, LeBron James had an interesting comment on the expectations of the Lakers heading into the season. (1:16:13) The NHL will begin the 2024-25 season tomorrow, but in earnest starts on Tuesday. Commissioner Gary Bettman is already looking to open discussions on a new CBA that's not set to expire until September of 2026! I'll go over the over/under point totals of the year in light of an NHL preview next week. (1:20:57) There's a UFC light heavyweight fight Saturday night where Alex Pereira & Khalil Rountree will square off for the title in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Mets are in the playoffs after an amazing game 1 yesterday against the Braves. Boomer was on the golf course as he was watching the game and Boomer kept texting Ron Darling complaining about Edwin Diaz. Boomer said he felt like a little kid again. Boomer is ‘irked' at all the stolen bases the Mets are giving up. He is ‘irked' by the lack of attention to detail. If Pete Alonso has a massive offseason, everyone will forget about this past regular season. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Mets win in Atlanta with Howie Rose on the calls. We heard from Steve Cohen on the ‘rollercoaster' of a game. Evan and Tiki did a watch party yesterday and Jerry has the audio. RIP to Pete Rose and Dikembe Mutombo. In the final segment of the hour, we took calls from happy Mets fans. We talked about all the Mets players that had great years. Boomer is taking stock of the regular season performance.
Gary reflects on the incredible humanitarian impact of Dikembe Mutombo outside of his basketball accolades.
Episode 330 is upon us, and it's a fruitful road trip to Cincinnati! Three points, roster rotation, and another goal for Denis are all we wanted, and LAFC delivered!LAFC came out inspired, dominating much of the first half hour or so. The only downside would come about a half hour in, as Sergi Palencia would pick up a yellow, meaning he will have to miss our next match, home against STL. Great combination play, from Omar to Lewis to Kei to Lewis and finally to David Martinez, resulted in a magnificent goal from the teenager, and a 1-0 lead for LAFC.Cincy would answer at about the hour mark, as another patented laser beam from Luca Orellano knotted the contest. Halftime sub Denis Bouanga would provide the winner, and, somewhat unsurprisingly, it would come off another keeper assist from Hugo and the first assist in Black and Gold for Olivier Giroud. LAFC would hold tight and see out the result, moving back to second in the West. Also on this episode, Scarf handles the Great Spider Attack of 2024 quite well, at least on camera, while Filly adds to his prop game with a Mertopolitan! The boys remember both Charlie Hustle and Dikembe while celebrating a 38-year old and much more! Enjoy 330!

Hamady acts as my tour guide for my upcoming trip to Senegal and talks about their love of futbol, what food I need to eat, and the sights I can't miss. On this episode of NBA Flashback we go back to December 9th, 2004 and relive the night Tracy McGrady scored 13 points in 33 seconds to lift the Rockets over the Spurs with his teammate, friend, and fellow Hall of Famer, Dikembe Mutombo. Dikembe takes us through a game that was a defensive struggle until the last minute when something happened that no one had seen before or since. He gives us behind the scenes stories about what he and his teammates were thinking while fans left the arena just as T-Mac started to catch fire. We also discuss how Tracy would score in today's NBA, and what the legacy of this game means to McGrady.
