Book Title: Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, the First Manned Flight to Another World Author: Bob Zimmerman Segment 8: Perilous Return: Navigation Glitch, Double Skip, and Ocean Landing Following the Christmas broadcast, the critical Trans Earth Injection (TEI) burn occurred behind the moon, relying solely on the SPS engine for their return. Jim Lovell famously announced, "I want to report that there is a Santa Claus," confirming the successful burn. However, Lovell later accidentally "cleared the gimbal," resetting the navigation. He expertly used a sextant and stars like Rigel and Sirius to reorient the craft, showcasing the astronauts' remarkable ability to correct errors. The return also involved a risky "double skip trajectory" re-entry into Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 mph, a maneuver only successfully performed twice before. They landed within three miles of recovery ships, though the capsule was top-heavy and flipped upside down upon splashdown. The mission was a testament to the risks taken, with NASA having been chastened by the Apollo 1 fire that killed Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee in 1967, and the Soviets by Vladimir Komarov's death on Soyuz 1.  DECEMBER 19688

Amos 3:1–15 warns against the peril of false security before God. Israel imagined that their heritage, religious practices, and prosperity guaranteed safety, but Amos declared that privilege brings responsibility, and grace creates obligation. God's roar through his prophets revealed that judgement was certain, for his justice is impartial and his warnings are never empty. Outward religion and cultural identity cannot save, and wealth cannot protect. Our only true refuge is found in Christ, who bore the judgement we deserve and rose to grant salvation to all who repent and trust in him. Four truths rise to the surface of the text. 1. God's Grace Creates Godly Obligations (vv. 1–2) 2. God's Warnings Point to Serious Consequences (vv. 3–8) 3. God's Justice is Universally Impartial (vv. 9–12) 4. God's Judgement is Humanly Inescapable (vv. 13–15)

The Perilous Fascination Of Time Twins

Steven Forrest Evolutionary Astrology Podcast

Astrologers sometimes get carried away and say that every chart is totally unique. That's not really true. Obviously it's possible for two people to be born at the same place and time – or at least close enough that there's no real practical difference between their charts. Even people born a few days apart, but with the same degrees on their Ascendants, will have extremely similar charts. Their Moons will be in different signs, and that's important. But much else will be the same. Naturally as they go through life, such “time twins” will simultaneously experience almost the same transits and progressions. Because of that astrological similarity, we would expect many parallels in their lives – and in fact, we often do see exactly that phenomenon. Here's perhaps the most famous of these “time twin” tales: An ironmonger named Samuel Hemming was born on the same day as the English King, George III – June 4, 1738. They apparently looked very similar and there were many parallels in their lives. Hemming opened his business on the same day that George was crowned king. They married on the same day. They both had the same number and genders of children. They were sick at the same time and they both died on the same day – January 29, 1820 – of similar maladies.  Stories of this sort are fairly abundant. As I was preparing to write this newsletter, I was poking around the internet and followed a link (astrologerpeg.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/time-twins) to a woman who bills herself as “Astrologer Peg.” I don't know her or what her sources are, but her site mentions that she studied with Noel Tyl, which is a good credential.  In any case, I got two particularly dramatic versions of these “time twin” stories from her. I can't vouch for their accuracy, but I have no reason to doubt it – again, tales such as these are actually very common.

My guest for this episode is author and historian Karl Bell, who joined me to talk about his new book, The Perilous Deep: A Supernatural History of the Atlantic. Karl is Associate Professor in Cultural and Social History and Co-Director of the Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures at the University of Portsmouth. Prior to his latest work, he wrote The Legend of Spring-Heeled Jack, which was winner of the 2013 Katharine Briggs Award. As its title mentions, The Perilous Deep focuses on the Atlantic Ocean. This is a place whose vastness and unfathomable depths have inspired tales of ghost ships, reports of encounters with mermaids and sea monsters, and legends of mysterious islands for centuries. These stories were told by both seafarers and coastal communities and formed an important part of their culture. In the book, Karl explores why these stories were told, how they were repeated and mutated and what fears, anxieties and desires they helped to express. It offers an insight into the supernatural history of the Atlantic Ocean and some of its neighbouring seas, showing how seafaring peoples have developed knowledge and a sense of control over nature through myths and legends. The Perilous Deep is published by Reaktion Books - further details are available at https://reaktionbooks.co.uk/work/the-perilous-deep. The whistleblowing book written by former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams is as explosive and shocking as expected, maybe more so. The author reveals personal stories that shaped her world-view and explains her conviction and hope to use her life to affect positive change. That same hope led her to pursue a career at a social technology company she seemingly envisioned as a champion for humanity. From there, she takes us with her into executive level meetings, haphazard trips abroad, and interactions with various staff that each provide startling enlightenment into the inner workings of a company with access to sensitive information about people around the globe. Marc Elias: Trump's War on Big Law & Most Perilous Power Grab

John is joined by Marc Elias, the attorney whom Donaled Trump has cast as his bete noire in the legal profession, to discuss the president's war on the judiciary, the bar, and the rule of law itself. Elias explains why the executive order titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections” is designed to do just the opposite, making it the most dangerous of Trump's myriad power grabs; why we aren't yet in a constitutional crisis but soon could be; and why Trump's threats have caused so many prestigious law firms to bend the knee. Marc also tells John why he hasn't done the same despite being plenty worried by Trump's singling him out as a “very bad" person and a “thug". 5/8:  FOR KYIV 2025, AS FOR TOKYO 1945, NEGOTIATION IS MORE PERILOUS THAN WAR-FIGHTING: Road to Surrender: Three Men and the Countdown to the End of World War II by  Evan Thomas  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Road-Surrender-Three-Countdown-World/dp/0399589252 1941 PEARL HARBOR ATTACK At 9:20 a.m. on the morning of May 30, General Groves receives a message to report to the office of the secretary of war “at once.” Stimson is waiting for him. He wants to know: has Groves selected the targets yet? So begins this suspenseful, impeccably researched history that draws on new access to diaries to tell the story of three men who were intimately involved with America's decision to drop the atomic bomb—and Japan's decision to surrender. They are Henry Stimson, the American Secretary of War, who had overall responsibility for decisions about the atom bomb; Gen. Carl “Tooey” Spaatz, head of strategic bombing in the Pacific, who supervised the planes that dropped the bombs; and Japanese Foreign Minister Shigenori Togo, the only one in Emperor Hirohito's Supreme War Council who believed even before the bombs were dropped that Japan should surrender. Henry Stimson had served in the administrations of five presidents, but as the U.S. nuclear program progressed, he found himself tasked with the unimaginable decision of determining whether to deploy the bomb. The new president, Harry S. Truman, thus far a peripheral figure in the momentous decision, accepted Stimson's recommendation to drop the bomb. Army Air Force Commander Gen. Spaatz ordered the planes to take off. Like Stimson, Spaatz agonized over the command even as he recognized it would end the war. After the bombs were dropped, Foreign Minister Togo was finally able to convince the emperor to surrender. To bring these critical events to vivid life, bestselling author Evan Thomas draws on the diaries of Stimson, Togo and Spaatz, contemplating the immense weight of their historic decision. In Road to Surrender, an immersive, surprising, moving account, Thomas lays out the behind-the-scenes thoughts, feelings, motivations, and decision-making of three people who changed history.

He's arguably the biggest drug smuggler in history, having worked with Pablo Escobar and others through the '70s, '80s, and even into the '90s. Roger's life is like something out of a movie—he spent 33 years in jail and has incredible stories about the drug trade, working with people like Barry Seal, and the U.S. government's involvement in the smuggling business. Speaking of Barry Seal, if you've seen American Made with Tom Cruise, there's a wild scene where Barry predicts the prosecutor's next move after being arrested—and sure enough, it happens just as he said. Well, Barry Seal actually worked for Roger. That's how legendary this guy is. Roger also wrote a book called Smuggler about his life. You'll want to check that out after hearing these crazy stories. Here's Roger Reaves. Episode Description: Roger Reaves shares his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings on a farm to becoming one of the most notorious drug smugglers in history. He discusses working with Pablo Escobar, surviving harrowing escapes from law enforcement, and the brutal reality of imprisonment and torture. Roger reflects on his decisions, the human connections that shaped his life, and the lessons learned from a high-stakes career. Whether you're here for the stories or the insights into an underground world, this episode offers a rare glimpse into a life few could imagine.
