Today's guest deejay is Anne Chris. Anne's music is a beautiful blend of ambient, experimental, and modern classical styles. I was introduced to Anne's through Soundwave guest deejay Peter van Cooten (listen to his mix here and here), host of Ambientblog and DreamScenes on Concertzender. Based in the Netherlands, Anne Bakker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer. Her music often incorporates field recordings, found sounds, and electronic elements to create unique and immersive soundscapes. Anne has released several albums and EPs on labels such as Dronarivm, Whitelabrecs, and Rusted Tone Recordings. Her music has been described as “a delicate and hypnotic work that shines with an inner light” and “a moving and atmospheric experience.” Many of the tracks in Anne's mix feature minimalistic arrangements and slowly evolving textures, often exploring the sonic nuances of single notes or simple harmonic progressions. Using drones and sustained tones is also prevalent, creating a sense of sonic stasis or timelessness. Several pieces also feature acoustic instruments, such as piano, guitar, and strings, woven into the electronic soundscapes to create a delicate interplay between the organic and synthetic elements. Today's guest deejay is Jolanda Moletta. I was first introduced to Jolanda through her captivating work in Peter van Cooten's mix for Soundwave (listen here), and I've been hooked ever since. I invited Jolanda to share a mix with us. Jolanda's mix features artists whose works are marked by their unique approach to sound and a profound sense of introspection. It is a haunting and deeply introspective exploration of the mystical power of sound. Hailing from Italy, Jolanda has been making waves with her unique blend of organic and electronic soundscapes, drawing inspiration from her love of nature and the cosmos. Her album, Full Moon Session, was just released earlier this month, which includes live performances of songs from her Nine Spells album. Jolanda also led the folk band She Owl, delivering two full-length albums and performing more than 300 concerts across Europe and the US. But in the past two years of isolation, Jolanda focused on a deeply personal project, one that connects her to her ancestral roots and promotes healing.

I look back at 2022 and realize that I didn't put out the "usual" amount of mixes for the HC podcast. This is indeed because right after the celebration of the music from the year before, I was utterly preoccupied with the thoughts turned towards Ukraine. As a result, there were two "For Ukraine" mixes by Brian Housman of Stationary Travels and Peter can Cooten of Ambient Blog. In the last two weeks, with the annual Best of the Year tradition, I managed to broadcast and archive a few of my selections from each list, showcasing appearing artists. You can stream these via my Mixcloud account. But it's not the same as the typical fair. So today, I'm back, along with the amazing Mike Jedlicka of Optic Echo, to share his favourite vinyl selections of 2022. This is that one particular tradition that I refuse to let go of, with today's mix being the 12th instalment in the series. There is not much left to say, and we both hope the music speaks much louder. Please enjoy!

Today's guest deejay is Peter van Cooten, host of Ambientblog and DreamScenes on Concertzender. I met Peter through Harrold Roeland and I invited Peter to guest deejay on the show (listen to his mix here). I did not anticipate that a mix from Peter would be something of an event. Peter's mixes are more like epic tone poems that contain both the cosmic and the mundane in one listening experience. Furthermore, Peter meticulously crafts his mixes. Peter might use a passage once from a song or as a leitmotif. His mixes are dense and multilayered. Peter's skill is that despite the complexity of his mixes, they are seamless and fluid. You don't need to know the immense effort that produced the mix you are listening to appreciate its beauty and artistry. Because Peter mixes feel like an event, it felt appropriate to release today's show for Halloween as we celebrate the darker half of the year. Peter has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when out guest deejay will be Mike Lazarev. See you then. Most (if not all) previous Ambientblog mixes always had some dark moments; they are never “just” relaxing. You can only feel release if you also feel tension. This time, I wanted to avoid the darkness and create a “lighter mood mix.” Not of the “Ibiza Chillout Lounge” kind, but one that can be played in the background and is still exciting enough to listen to. I hope I succeeded, but of course, you're the one to decide about that! With two hours, Cloudwatching is longer than usual. Only a few tracks are included in their full length, but most are heavily edited or even just short fragments. Also, they are often overlayed, so you'll hear the music in a different context. The extensive playlist below may help you track down the original in their full-length versions. hope you'll enjoy watching these -imaginary- clouds! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

Sasha's first mix was elemental and cosmic. Her second mix was cozy and intimate. Sasha, as Robocat, shared anthemic bangers to celebrate Pride on her third mix for Soundwave. Sasha returns with a mix that is, for the most part, a compilation of select tracks from Tehnofonika Records. It's been my soundtrack as San Diego transitions from summer to fall.     Peter van Cooten runs the excellent Ambientblog website which has great reviews and, of course, wonderful mixes. Anytime Peter reaches out with a mix idea or a a set he'd like to cross-post on both of our platforms, I will always jump at the chance. As I said on Peter's last guest mix, his sets are different from mine in that they are more intricate. He does not use full tracks, instead opting for excerpts and samples piled on each other, sometimes 2, 3, or 4 tracks play simultaneously, to create a new sound collage. Here's what Peter says about this mix: "Apart from its opening sample – ‘It is time to stop seeing. It is time to stop speaking. It is time to listen', from David Cronenberg's Crimes Of the Future – this mix has no central theme or story. It's up to you, the listener to take the time to listen and go with the flow. Let your fantasy tell you the story. And, after you did, I'd love to hear what you heard. This mix is created using many fragments and samples from longer pieces of music, often presented in multiple layers. Check the original compositions using the tracklist below." Here's a map of the mix, layer upon layer of the 31 tracks used in the collage.   Check out Peter's work here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/  He also does surround sound mixes, which you can find here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/the-surround-mix-versions/ And Peter is on Mixcloud - https://www.mixcloud.com/ambientblog/ Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T - Start time - Sample Length - Artist - Title Album - Year - Label   00:00 01:12  David Cronenberg - Time To Listen Sample Crimes Of The Future, 2022   00:04 03:35  Dronny Darko & Protou - Sin Eater Liberty: Compilation Of Experimental Music From Ukraine, 2022, Flaming Pines  02:28 02:42  William St. Hugh - Voice Of The Dolphins Dominion, 2022, self-released  04:31 02:16  Tapani Rinne & Teho Majamaki - Lucid Dream On The Border, 2022, Signature Dark  06:13 02:36  Ivan Cebrian & Victor Cerdan - Enemigo Intimo Inside // Outside, 2022, Oigovisiones  06:40 02:30  Park Jiha - At Dawn The Gleam, 2022, Glitterbeat  08:49 02:39  Benedicte Maurseth - Eidfyrder Hárr, 2022, Hubro  10:47 03:51  Bill Fontana - Imaginary Sonic Visions MSCTY Expo Unknown Pleasures Zone, 2022, MSCTY Editions  12:40 02:18  Alva Noto - Odradek (for Jhonn Balance) For, 2006, Line  13:31 01:50  Jacek & Ewa Doroszenko - Night Masque Bodyfulness, 2022, Audiobulb Records  14:17 02:27  Higher Intelligence Agency - The Black Patch Song Of The Machine, 2022, self-released  15:58 02:50  Siddhartha Barnhoorn - Final Ascension Out There, Oceans Of Time, vol. 1, 2022, self-released  18:27 02:24  Mike Lazarev - All That Remains When You Are, 2022, Slowcraft Recordings  20:27 03:17  Orghanon - Dronework V Droneworks I-V, 2022, St.An.Da  22:13 03:27  Aleksi Myllykoski ft Wimme - Composition VI: Inherently Destructive Contamination St. Virus, 2021, Signature Dark  24:37 04:13  Peter Phippen, Rahbi Crawford, Invar Lunde Jr. - Andromeda Galaxies, 2022, Projekt Records  28:46 02:30  Jóhann Jóhansson & Echo Collective - Shell 12 Conversations With Thilo Heinzmann, 2019, Deutsche Grammophon  29:46 05:29  Maggi Payne - Distant Thunder Arctic Winds, 2010, Innova Recordings  33:08 03:07  Leo Kupper - Litanea 1987 Complete Electronic & Voices Works 1961-1987, 2022, Sub Rosa  36:22 04:35  Monty Adkins - Remote Communion Remote Communion, 2020, Cronica  38:56 01:28  Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet - Thunder Continues In The Afternoon Landfall, 2018, Nonesuch  40:11 04:35  Cell - Passive Control Part 1 Onwards System, 2022, Ultimae Records  43:27 03:59  Alphaxone & Protou - Sub Signal Stardust, 2017, Cryo Chamber  45:51 03:03  Wil Bolton & Francis Gri - The Ripples Theory Imaginary Tales, 2022, Krysalisound  47:54 02:11  Xqui - Narrator Pieces Part 2, 2022, Somewherecold Records  48:45 03:57  Michel Banabila - Alienation Monochromes, 2022, Tapu Records  52:21 00:55  Stuart A. I honestly wish that I could stop promoting this benefit compilation, titled For Ukraine, which is now on its second volume (see links below). I'd stop promoting because we wouldn't need the funds which would all be donated to International Rescue Committee (rescue.org) to support displaced children and families with vital supplies. Albeit somehow it has all receded in the background, and yet the war goes on. This time, I've enlisted the help of Peter van Cooten of ambientblog.net to compile and curate a mix, featuring 28 pieces selected from two volumes, all of them painstakingly edited to create a continuous journey and to entice you to purchase both volumes (with a third one on the way soon!) to experience the tracks in full. So you can treat this mix as a sampler, or a bonus if you've already contributed to our cause. “There are many changing instrumentations, moods and atmospheres,” says Peter about his selection, “I like to think of it as travelling in a fast-moving train, looking out the window at different landscapes gliding by…” Please share and help support our message.   Volume 1 : https://hcdi.gs/ForUkraine Volume 2 : https://hcdi.gs/ForUkraine2

Today's guest deejay is Robin Rimbaud, AKA Scanner. I discovered Robin last century on a compilation album. At the time, Robin was snatching phone conversations from the ether and incorporating them into his music. It was at once intimate and troubling because the very act of listening to Robin's music made you complicit in his eavesdropping. Those tracks, however, are just one area he explores in his music. If you delved into his work, you'd find that it is not incongruous to find him straddling minimalism, classical music, soundtracks and more. Robin has some words about his mix, which you can read below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Peter van Cooten, host of Ambientblog.net and DreamScenes on Concertzender. See you then! I always find it challenging to know how to begin to choose music from literally hundreds of thousands of pieces of music that I own. Music lives with me from the moment I wake up early in the morning until I go to bed at night (at a very reasonable time). So, I thought it might be of interest to simply make a collage of a few of the many pieces of music that have accompanied me in the last seven days. image by Thomas Park   This mix was a lot of fun!  Back in April, Peter van Cooten, of Ambientblog, created the awesome mix, Lockdown. After it posted we talked about doing a collaboration mix. As Peter is in Holland and I am in the States we would send files back and forth to each other adding more tracks with every pass. We had to decide on a theme and a format. In the end the format became the theme.   It worked like this: We each take 5 minute turns and increase the sample count with each turn. So in the first turn we each start with a 5 minute track. Next turn we each use two samples, next turn 3, then 4...until we get to the final turn where each 5 minute turn contains 6 samples each. When all is said and done we end up with 42 samples used in a 60 minute mix. Peter is the master of layering multiple tracks or samples to create interesting mixes. I generally don't use quite that number of cuts in my mixes so I knew it was going to be a challenge. I worried that it would turn into a situation where it sounded like a good idea at the time until I had to actually do it.   I think it turned out great! It was really cool trying to match of the outro of the previous segment to my new tracks but still make my own segments unique. Somehow this crazy format produced a fascinating mix. After finishing the mix Peter came up with the title "Fragmented Dialogue" which fit perfectly with how this beast was put together.   I'm excited to have this mix published in three places at the same time - Low Light Mixes, Ambientblog & Headphone Commute. His first mix for Headphone Commute podcast appeared back in 2011, titled Dawn Secrets and it features many of my favorite artists to this day. I think it's only fair to say that Dave Michuda of Low Light Mixes is also part of the said "network", with his first mix for Headphone Commute appearing in August of 2010 (also a decade ago), titled The Landscape Listens. For this special syndicated podcast, Dave and Peter create a cooperative voyage, each taking their turns to conduct and maneuver this ship in complex sonic waters to deliver you safely ashore, while in the process forever tattooing their message on your map of existence. Enjoy! For a more detailed description, full tracklisting, and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com

I like to think that I put a lot of thought and effort into these mixes. Hopefully, the mix as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But what I do is nothing compared to the transformative touch that Peter Van Cooten brings to his mixes.  Each mix is a unique work of art. Peter rarely lets a track play in its complete form. Instead, he uses smaller samples and deftly weaves the tracks in and out of each other. Sometimes 2,3, or 4 tracks play simultaneously, creating something new from different elements. In this mix, he uses an incredible 41 tracks! Here's what Peter has to say about using so many short samples:  "Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed about using such short samples and/or editing the tracks (of these 41, only 8 are used in their complete form). It's a bit like cutting up the Mona Lisa to create a landscape patchwork with the fragments ;-)  But on the other hand, this is what I feel makes these mixes unique. Taken out of their context and in relation to other fragments, the music sometimes tells a different story."  This mix is a bit darker than most of my mixes. But it's dark in an interesting way, not in a droney, dissonant way. The mix has a very cinematic feel and combined with the cover art and title I can imagine drone shots of empty streets and newspapers blowing across the square. Peter was hesitant about the name and the cover art. He says -  "It may be too closely linked to the current worldwide crisis, but on the other hand I have tried to think of another name or context but the uncertain times seem to be too dominant to think of another name I could give it. The funny thing is, that if you listen back most of my mixes have a rather dark edge to them. There's always a lot of 'tension/release' to them. But in this case, it seems there's a bit more 'tension' than 'release'. Oh well, sign of the times..." Peter runs his own ambient music blog called, appropriately, Ambientblog.net. Where in addition to his fine mixes(available in DTS surround as well), he has a ton of good reviews and recommendations. You can find it here...   https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/   He's also on Mixcloud here... https://www.mixcloud.com/ambientblog/ When he creates these extraordinary mixes he posts a pic of the total track layout, layer upon layer of all the music used. Here is the map of this mix...      Peter does his tracklist a little differently than I do. He gives listeners more info about each track, including start time, sample length, artist, title, album title, year and record label. Thanks to Peter Van Cooten of Ambientblog.net for such an excellent mix. Hopefully, I can talk him into doing another one in the future.   Cheers, and stay safe.   T R A C K L I S T - Start time - Sample length - Artist - Title Album Title, Year, Label 00:00  03:23 Fovea Hex - Is  Is Lanza Light and Given (Steven Wilson Remixes), 2019, Die Stadt/Janet Records 01:25  04:35 Maggi Payne - Fluid Dynamics Arctic Winds, 2020, Aguirre Records 02:03  01:45 Pat Keista - Doppler Still Of The Void, 2020, self-released 04:17  01:47 Dave Phillips - Phytognosophysiology Post Homo Sapiens, 2020, Attenuation Circuit 05:10  02:45 Jóhann Jóhannsson and Yair Elazar Glotman - Prelude Last And First Men, 2020, Deutsche Grammophon 05:42  02:00 Andrew Pekler - Fonseca Winds (Lament) Sounds From Phantom Islands, 2019, Faitiche 07:29  01:19 Jóhann Jóhannsson and Yair Elazar Glotman - Telepathic Unity Last And First Men, 2020, Deutsche Grammophon 08:13  03:10 Ben Bertrand - Those Behind Us That We Follow Manes, 2020, Les Albums Claus 11:08  01:31 Fani Konstantinidou - (Variations) Moving Music: Sounds From The Rocking Chair, 2020, Moving Furniture Records, 11:58  01:32 Aaron Martin - Overcoming Inertia Test Subjects, 2019, self-released 12:53  01:51 A Journey Of Giraffes - Gone Is The New Fuji Kona, 2019, Somewherecold records 13:29  03:30 Robert Haigh - Ghosts Of Blacker Dyke Black Sarabande, 2020, Unseen Worlds 16:46  02:48 Snorri Hallgrímsson - Fear Chasing The Present, 2020, Moderna Records 16:53  00:30 Mica Levy - Mensajero Monos, 2019, Invada 17:40  02:30 Snorri Hallgrímsson - Suffering Chasing The Present, 2020, Moderna Records 19:22  01:58 Bersarin Quartett - Prolog Methoden Und Maschinen, 2019, Denovali  20:41  01:09 Ruairi O'Baoighill - Scryer To See Without Eyes, 2018, Cursed Monk Records 20:50  01:59 I Wound - The Choir Of The Drowned Sings 'Our Demons Are Real' Homework Year 3, 2018, Taâlem 21:48  03:01 Christine Ott - Comma Chimères (Pour Ondes Martenots), 2020, Nahal Recordings 24:22  02:34 Ida Toninato - Pour Retourner Au Silence We Become Giants, 2020, Dragon's Eye Recordings 25:32  03:47 Merrin Karras - Drawn, Quartered Northwest Passage, 2020, A Strangely Isolated Place 28:27  02:07 Ciro Berenguer - Luna Creciente Eilean 100, 2019, Eilean Records 29:57  01:47 Yiorgis Sakellariou - B4 Diapsalmata: A Collection Of Short Works, 2018, Tanuki Records 29:57  01:19 Celer - Birds Inside The High Halls Of Hangzhou (06.23.17) Xièxie, 2019, Two Acorns 30:12  03:18 Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr, Koichi Shimizu - Sharjah And Java Metaphors - Selected Soundworks from the cinema of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2017, Sub Rosa 31:24  00:44 Coil - Corybantic Ennui Stolen and Contaminated Songs, 2019, Cold Spring Records  32:32  01:22 Olivier Messiaen - Quator Pour Le Fin Du Temps III: Abîme des Oiseaux Olivier Messiaen - Complete Edition, 2008, Deutsche Grammophon 33:54  01:26 Hildur Gudnadottir - Following Sophie Joker OST, 2019, Watertower Records 35:14  00:55 Ryuichi Sakamoto - Countdown Black Mirror: Smithereens, 2019, Milan 35:45  03:24 Silent Chaos - Nocturne On Ganimede  Macro, 2020, We Don't Give A Fuck 38:52  04:03 Roger Eno and Brian Eno - Burnt Umber Mixing Colours, 2020, Deutsche Grammophon 42:38  02:13 Martina Bertoni - Invisible Cracks All The Ghosts Are Gone, 2020, Falk 44:29  03:30 Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang - Nightspell Snow Catches On Her Eyelashes, 2020, Jazzland Recordings 46:21  02:13 Jana Irmert - Fog Cusp, 2020, self-released 47:40  01:36 Fovea Hex - Given Is Lanza Light and Given (Steven Wilson Remixes), 2019, Die Stadt/Janet Records 48:42  02:40 Frank Makowski - Fliegende Schatten - Canon 1 Canon der Finsternisse, 2019, Diffusschall 49:05  01:12 Michael Begg - Plain Chant Sonambulo, 2019, Omnempathy 50:40  02:20 A Winged Victory For The Sullen - The Slow Descent Has Begun The Undivided Five, 2019, Ninja Tune 52:35  04:30 Felix Blume - Horns In Fog Pt. 2 Fog Horns, 2019, Discrepant 55:49  03:02 Max Richter - Ursa Minor - Visions Ad Astra, 2019, Deutsche Grammophon 58:30  00:40 Jóhann Jóhannsson and Yair Elazar Glotman - The Sun Last And First Men, 2020, Deutsche Grammophon 59:10 End

MIXES – Ambientblog

Headphone Commute, Ambientblog and Slowcraft Records are proud to present a unique mix by a colleague and partner in crime, Peter van Cooten, of beautiful works from a beautiful couple: James Murray and Anne Garner --- originally published on Ambientblog --- The inspiration for this mix came after attending separate performances of James Murray and Anne Garner. The music they perform is quite different: James exploring various kinds of abstract experimental electronic soundscapes, Anne performing her poetic emotional songs blending jazz, alternative pop, folk, spectral lullabies and tender neo-classical arrangements. As different as their output may be, it still fits together very well - which is no real surprise knowing that Anne & James are a couple living together, and James produces and contributes towards Anne's music.I wanted to find out how it would work out when mixing some tracks from their past and recent albums together. And I found out it works very well, as you can hear yourself in this mix. It also shows that, if the ingredients match, 0ne plus one can be much more than two! Peter van Cooten’s intricate storytelling with his favorite piece is the precise definition of a true curator. But it’s not just a collection of sequential tracks that makes a mix from PvC a transforming experience, it’s also his multi-layered approach to weaving in the dynamics and textures of individual compositions that truly create a brand new one, disabling your mind from peeling apart the individual pieces (see below the screenshot of the entire sequence). And that’s a great thing, because we certainly love the soundscapes that PvC introduces our ears to, with his intricate selection of layers, textures and most importantly, story-telling. The latter is what makes up a great selector, elevating him on par with the artist themselves, where the collage of sounds becomes more than just a mix, but a brand new piece of music. Enjoy! Peter van Cooten has been a long time friend and a co-conspirator in our quest to turn more ears towards ambient and cinematic music. It is a great honor to have Peter put together a mix showcasing his favorite selections from '... and darkness came' compilation which has been released exactly two months ago today! Here's more from Peter: When I thought about creating a mix from this material, I realized that there already were quite a few great mixes around. So I decided to find another angle for this mix. I chose to leave out the melodic stuff, the beautiful (often piano) instrumentals, the post-classical (or 'contemporary melancholic') compositions – the ones that seem to have the widest audience appeal. And just focus on the, maybe somewhat less obvious, darkest of drones... So here’s some of the 'darkest of the darkness' For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com

Ever since I heard Banabila play a live set for VPRO's radio program Spleen (way back in 1983, mind you!), I have been addicted to his music. This particular track has remained one of my favourite over the years...although the sound quality slowly deteriorated because I had to copy it a few times from cassette to cassette to preserve it...(that's the reason it is not included in this mix). Looking back to the musical output of almost 30 years, Banabila's music is hard to categorize. He has released ambient music, as well as world fusion and sample jazz music ("Voiznoiz 3 - Urban Jazz  Scapes ", recorded with dutch jazz trumpeteer Eric Vloeimans was awarded an Edison in 2003).
His tracks has been used in many theatre productions and television documentaries!

Banabila's music is very experimental at times, yet it conveys emotions one can easily relate to - and it is exactly that which makes him a unique musician...as well as one difficult to market because he cannot be 'pinpointed' to any contemporary style. When I started on this mix, at first I wanted to focus on the ambient music Banabila has created. But in fact that would not do him right, it would represent only a small part of all the music he created. This mix is not a 'Best of Banabila', neither is it a collection of personal favourites  (in that case it would be a lot longer!). Looking back on this mix, I see a painful amount of tracks-that-should also-have-been-included....
But it covers a lot of different aspects of Michel Banabila's musical world.
A world built from "Streets, Dreams and Memories", waiting to be discovered by those with open ears. Peter van Cooten has been involved in music for over 50 years now. Based out of Utrecht, Holland, Peter has been feeding his passion for ambient music by consuming the sounds ranging from Klaus Schulze, to Tangerine Dream, to Bill Laswell and of course, Brian Eno. After being invited to compile a mix for Dutch Nation Radio, Peter became interested in creating inner worlds of music through layered collages of his favorite tracks. In the last decade, Peter has been publishing mixes on his Ambient Blog, and today we are proud to feature a mix, carefully crafted exclusively for Headphone Commute. I guess I should start with a warning for regular visitors: this mix is different from what you're used to. First: it's definitely not an "ambient mix", although there's quite a lot of ambience involved in this music. Second: it's not a compilation mix, but a mix featuring the music of one artist only: Michel Banabila. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- This mix is not a 'Best of Banabila', neither is it a collection of personal favourites (in that case it would be a lot longer!). Looking back on this mix, I see a painful amount of tracks-that-should also-have-been-included.... But it covers a lot of different aspects of Michel Banabila's musical world.A world built from "Streets, Dreams and Memories", waiting to be discovered by those with open ears..
