Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Just hanging out all day with family, eating and drinking. Perfect. The songs in this mix were all chosen for the titles, which all fit the Thanksgiving theme. Besides the obvious titles with the word "thanks" my favorite track titles are "my dad's famous potatoes", "Give me cornbread when I'm hungry", and "An Awkward Conversation at a Family Gathering." Play this in the background as you eat way too much food and hopefully not way too much beer. Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving! Our latest episode of Soundtracking sees a welcome return for friend of the show, Hildur Guðnadóttir. Hildur joins Edith to discuss her stunning score for Joker Folie A Deux, following Joaquin Phoenix's recent turn in which we focussed more on the musical numbers.
Academy Award®-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir and executive music producer Jason Ruder join our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, to discuss their extraordinary work on “Joker: Folie à Deux.” The sequel to 2019's Oscar-winning “Joker” comes with high expectations, and Hildur and Jason talk about the challenge of evolving the sound of the Joker universe, while incorporating new elements like live-recorded songs and experimental instruments. They discuss how the music helps define the tone of the movie, blurring the lines between score and song to create an immersive experience.“We really wanted to honor the sound world that we had already established [from the first film]... so we didn't want to go too far away from it. We knew that there would be strings and there would be a cello connection… Well, it just so happened that my instrument that I used in the first song got stolen a week before the recording session. So I had actually intended to just use the same instrument, but the Gods of Creativity forced me in a different direction… So I came up with this idea of creating what I call ‘the string prison.' It's literally like an electric fence that's playable... an electroacoustic, large scale, playable string instrument that formed this prison cell of very, very, very hot strings, that I played through another instrument.”—Hildur Guðnadóttir, Composer, “Joker: Folie à Deux”Be sure to check out “Joker: Folie à Deux,” now in theaters, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com.
Well, here we.... go! Joker: Folie à Deux - the sequel to the polarizing but smash hit Joker - has now hit theaters. it's not secret at this point that Todd Phillips and his team had no intention of making a sequel to the first film but Academy Awards, including one for Joaquin Phoenix himself, and a billion-dollar box office run started to turn some heads over at Warner Bros. This is why I've always been very concerned about this sequel, despite still being a BIG fan of that first movie. The trailers certainly looked impressive but my concerns from a story perspective were not swayed. All that being said, the divisive reactions honestly had me so intrigued to go check this one out. I had the pleasure (I guess?) of seeing this one yesterday so let's discuss whether Joker: Folie à Deux is as good as the first film, in spoiler-free fashion! Joker: Folie à Deux: Directed by: Todd Phillips Written by: Scott Silver & Todd Phillips Based on characters created by: Bob Kane & Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson 'Harley Quinn' created by: Paul Dini & Bruce Timm Produced by: Joseph Garner, Todd Phillips, Emma Tillinger Koskoff Executive Producers: Pete Chiappetta, Mark Friedberg, George Kacandes, Andrew Lary, Jason Ruder, Scott Silver, Anthony Tittanegro, Michael E. Uslan Music by: Hildur Guðnadóttir Cinematography by: Lawrence Sher Editing by: Jeff Groth Casting by: Francine Maisler Production Design by: Mark Friedberg Costume Design by: Arianne Phillips Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleason, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harvey Lawtey Synopsis: While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur Fleck not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.
Joaquin Phoenix is back reprising his role as the iconic DC Comics villain in Joker: Folie A Deux, the highly anticipated sequel to 2019's Joker, which received critical acclaim, smashed the box office and was celebrated by fans too. The sequel which also stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, promises to be just as quirky, thrilling and deeply disturbing as the first. We discuss if we agree with the 12-min standing ovation the sequel received at the Venice film festival, before exploring how everyone feels about movies and shows that take a walk on the dark side, and finally on The B-Side, doing a deep dive into the music Hildur Guðnadóttir composed for these films.Image Credit: IMDb
Dana and Tom with new guest, Jaylan Salah Salman (Film Critic for In Session Film, Geek Vibes Nation, and Keith Loves Movies) discuss Joker (2019): written and directed by Todd Phillips with Scott Silver, music by Hildur Guðnadóttir, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, and Robert De Niro.Plot Summary: Gotham a city drenched in neon lights and shadows, where the line between reality and delusion blurs. Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a failed comedian and part-time clown, navigates this urban labyrinth as his mind unravels further each day. His existence is a series of humiliations and rejections, a slow burn of despair that ignites into a violent, chaotic inferno. In this dreary setting, the narrative delves deep into Arthur's psyche, exploring his transformation from a marginalized outcast into the infamous Joker. The film is a character study of a man pushed to the brink with a meditation on isolation, mental illness, and the corrosive effects of a society that abandons its most vulnerable. Arthur's journey is not just a descent into madness, but a twisted quest for identity and purpose in a world that has stripped him of both. This is a tale of existential dread and the search for meaning in a world that offers none, a dark and haunting reflection of the human condition.Guest:Jaylan Salah SalmanFilm Critic for In Session Film, Geek Vibes Nation, and Keith Loves MoviesAuthor on Amazon@jaylansalman on IG, Letterboxd, @jaylan_salah on TwitterChapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Jaylan Salah01:52 Getting to Know - Jaylan Salah05:53 Cast and Recognition for Joker09:05 Relationship(s) with Joker18:10 What is Joker About?27:04 Plot Summary for Joker28:32 Did You Know?31:01 First Break31:46 What's Happening w/ Jaylan Salah32:43 Ask Dana Anything41:11 Best Performance(s)49:04 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)57:32 Second Break58:23 In Memoriam59:43 Best/Funniest Lines01:01:22 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:06:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:10:42 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:17:10 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:22:07 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:26:01 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:28:52 Remaining Questions for Joker01:36:36 Thank You to Our Guest and Final ThoughtsYou can now find this episode in full video on YouTube: You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter,

And then I was even more excited when they agreed to create a mix for LLM. Here's what Johan & Linus say about this creation: "This mix is a collection of songs and sounds that have had an influence on our new album “För alltid” (out August 9th via Le Mont Analogue [Dronarivm]). “För alltid” is an album about the passing of time, and we tried to break our sound down to its smallest constituents. Sounds that have always been there as a world of its own, but hid in the background." Thanks so much for this excellent set! Be sure to check out their new release when it drops on the 9th. Cheers! [originally published on Patreon May 14, 2023] Today I'm joined by John Brisson of We've Read the Documents (@weve_read) to discuss one of the most notorious groups in parapolitical history: the Finders. To understand the events of 1987, we need to understand Marion Pettie, his milieu, and ultimately his network. Brisson walked me through his exceptional work digging up that information. We begin with a high level overview of the group and then drill down into Pettie's early life, anomalous military career, and strange rise to prominence in the counterculture. From there, we discuss Barbara Marx Hubbard and the World Future Society generally. All of this contributes to a more robust understanding of the events of 1987. For more than a year now, I've been obsessed with TÁR, the 2022 Todd Field film starring Cate Blanchett as an orchestral conductor whose power plays lead to her devastating downfall. Yes, the story is gripping and suspenseful, but it's the music interlaced throughout the film that keeps me coming back. Aside from the two works performed in the film — Mahler's Fifth Symphony and Elgar's Cello Concerto — which were baked into Field's script, the music you hear throughout TÁR is the result of months of work by the film's music supervisor, Lucy Bright. A specialist in the arenas of film and television scoring, Bright has worked with some of today's biggest composers — including Nico Muhly, Michael Nyman, and Volker Bertelmann — on projects ranging from Assassin's Creed to Aftersun and The Iron Claw. But what exactly does a music supervisor do on a film of this scale? Turns out, it's a lot. From working with a team of on-set sound engineers who specialize in recording symphony orchestras to developing the film's Deutsche Grammophon concept album and recreating Urbie Green's 1967 recording of "Twenty-one Trombones," Bright was kept busy managing countless aspects of the film's musical atmosphere across three countries. In this episode of the Classical Post podcast, I speak with Bright about the expert levels of coordination and collaboration vital to her work, working with the Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir to realize Lydia Tár's compositions, and what it was like seeing Cate Blanchett raise a baton to conduct Mahler. Plus, she shares her fascinating history with modern architecture, her go-to burger place in New York City, and the therapeutic benefits of swimming in the natural springs of London's Hampstead Heath. “A Haunting in Venice,” the latest cinematic adaptation featuring novelist Agatha Christie's fictional detective Hercule Poirot, starring and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, includes another unforgettable score by multiple award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. But unlike most of her other groundbreaking work, this score features a more “classical” approach — a creative decision stemming all the way back to Hildur's childhood!“Having grown up reading Agatha Christie and Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes and all these classics, I had a really strong feeling for how I felt like this genre should be approached. And how I felt like it should not be approached. And [its] quite the opposite to most of my work, where I'm quite explorative of sounds and instrumentation and building instruments or building sample worlds or found sounds. I feel like the whodunit should really just be a classical form (laughs) that should not be tampered with.”—Hildur Guðnadóttir, Composer, “A Haunting in Venice”Our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, returns to the Dolby Institute Podcast to speak with Hildur about her work on this film as well as her vast knowledge of music history from this period.Be sure to check out A Haunting in Venice, now in theaters, in Dolby Atmos® where available. Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. She's back, with that infectious laugh of hers, and we couldn't be more delighted. Hildur Guðnadóttir is one of my very favourite composers of film music, and she joins me to discuss Kenneth Branagh's latest take on Agatha Christie, A Haunting In Venice. Darker and more claustrophobic than the previous two Poirot mysteries he directed and starred in, A Haunting In Venice sees the Belgian detective investigate a murder while attending a Halloween seance at a palazzo in the floating city.
"A Haunting In Venice" is now playing in theaters and marks the third Agatha Christie adaptation by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, who returns for the third time as the world's greatest detective, Hercule Poirot. With an all-star cast that includes Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Camille Cotton, Jude Hill & Riccardo Scmarcio, the film cleverly takes Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party" and gives it enough fresh twists to help it stand out from "Murder On The Orient Express" and "Death On The Nile." Below, you will find a series of interviews conducted with some of the film's crew, including Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guđnadóttir, production designer John Paul Kelly, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos and the CEO of the Agatha Christie Estate, the great-grandson of Agatha Christie and Executive Producer James Pritchard. Please take a moment to listen to these interviews and check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from 20th Century Studios. Thank you, and enjoy! Today's guest deejay is Anne Chris. Anne's music is a beautiful blend of ambient, experimental, and modern classical styles. I was introduced to Anne's through Soundwave guest deejay Peter van Cooten (listen to his mix here and here), host of Ambientblog and DreamScenes on Concertzender. Based in the Netherlands, Anne Bakker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer. Her music often incorporates field recordings, found sounds, and electronic elements to create unique and immersive soundscapes. Anne has released several albums and EPs on labels such as Dronarivm, Whitelabrecs, and Rusted Tone Recordings. Her music has been described as “a delicate and hypnotic work that shines with an inner light” and “a moving and atmospheric experience.” Many of the tracks in Anne's mix feature minimalistic arrangements and slowly evolving textures, often exploring the sonic nuances of single notes or simple harmonic progressions. Using drones and sustained tones is also prevalent, creating a sense of sonic stasis or timelessness. Several pieces also feature acoustic instruments, such as piano, guitar, and strings, woven into the electronic soundscapes to create a delicate interplay between the organic and synthetic elements. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be zaké. See you then. On this week's The Cultural Frontline we explore the power of music and how artists have been using it to highlight issues including politics and the #MeToo movement. Prakash Neupane is a Nepali rapper and writer who mixes hip hop and R&B with social and political messages. His songs address the issues facing Nepal and his thoughts on the political situation in the country and its complex recent history. Prakash talks to Tina Daheley about why he feels rap is a good way of getting his message across and his role in a flourishing new wave of the Nepali hip hop scene. The Australian actor Cate Blanchett has just won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a fictitious classical music conductor and composer in Todd Field's new film Tár. It follows the downfall of Lydia Tár who is at the pinnacle of her career when she is accused of bullying and sexual misconduct towards her fellow musicians. Cate speaks to reporter Anna Bailey about why she wanted to take on this role and shares her response to the criticisms the film has faced. They are also joined by the creative force behind Tár's score, the award-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Hildur discusses her own experiences of being a woman creating music. Plus Syrian clarinettist and composer, Kinan Azmeh. He's recently performed his own works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as part of their A place to call home series, which explores issues of displacement and exile. Kinan speaks to The Cultural Frontline's Andrea Kidd about how his works, including his Clarinet Concerto, have been influenced by the Syrian civil war and the importance of home. Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir talks about her 2019 success on JOKER and CHERNOBYL and how she responded to pandemic slowdown at the breakout moment of her career. Why becoming a mother is something she holds so dearly and credits for some of her approach. Plus, why WOMEN TALKING challenged her to find a quiet inner strength, and TÁR created a mirror opposite of Hildur's approach to her music. Interview by Robert Kraft and Matt Schrader.
A couple of years ago I watched and read a ton on Ernest Shackleton, the English Explorer who went to Antarctica 3 times. One of those was a journey that saw his ship, Endurance, get stuck in the ice and then crushed by the ice, leaving the crew of 27 adrift on an ice floe. After 6 months of drifting they made their way in the ship's boats to Elephant Island. Shackleton and five crewmates set sail in one of the boats to South Georgia island, a journey of 800 miles (1,300 kilometres) through the Southern Ocean. Launching from Elephant Island After a 17-day voyage, the crew and small boat reached the southern coast of South Georgia. Historians regard the voyage of the crew in a 22.5-foot (6.9 m) ship's boat through the "Furious Fifties" as one of the greatest small-boat journeys ever completed. Shackleton and two others crossed the island's mountains on foot to a whaling station where they organized the rescue of the rest of the crew. Ultimately, the entire Endurance crew returned home, without loss of life. Welp, I hadn't intended on writing that much about Shackleton but it's such an amazing story. That was two years ago when I learned about Shackleton. Fast forward to today & I'm reading a book called "Antarctica" by Kim Stanley Robinson which has rekindled my fascination with the continent. I have now learned about Amundsen and his trek to the pole. And about Scott's tragic expedition in which he made it to the pole but froze to death on the way back. A surviving member of Scott's crew wrote a book about a part of the trip with a great title - "The Worst Journey in the World." Oof, that was a long-winded way of saying that I have had Antarctica on the brain lately. Of course, I had to create a mix to go with my obsession. One way to approach this mix would be to use atmospheric dub tracks. A lot of ambient dub music uses environmental themes and cold, arctic imagery. I thought that was the direction I was going to go until I stumbled on a bunch of tracks from William Ryan Fritch. He had a ton of great titles that fit perfectly, such as "On Frozen Ground" & "Ghosts in the Gale". And a couple of new tracks, "Blistering Wind" & "A Fissure Too Wide", are from his new album, Polarity, coming out this week. After hearing those tracks I decided to go with a more organic sound. It seemed to fit better when thinking of journeys happening between 1905 to 1917. There are some electronics and synths that show up but generally, the mix has a more acoustic, orchestral feel. The track titles show how the mix will take the listener on a journey that is a composite of many expeditions in Antarctica. The track by Irezumi is called Endurance, the name of Shackleton's ship. He uses some spoken word in the track that I assume is supposed to be Shackleton. The mix finishes with a whispering wind and the beautiful track "Before My Time" with vocals from Scarlett Johansson and lyrics that work well with the theme. Bundle up and enjoy this excursion to the bottom of the world. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Okomotive, Joel Schoch - Sail, my Friend! Terrance Hannum, synth-ist and keyboardist in his darkly beautiful drone-core band Locrian, doesn't set out everyday to be the most creative human on earth, but more often than not, something does indeed get made. Between his job as a professor of 3D Printing and digital fabrication and his life in Locrian, he also manages to write award-winning fiction, pulls haunting images out of his soul for his oil paintings and sculptures of dead flowers, and uses cassette tape to powerful effect of structured minimalism. Locrian has a new record called New Catastrphisms out August 12th (Profound Lore) produced and recorded mostly live by none other than J Robbins (Jawbox/Burning Airlines) to profound results. It continues with their string of celebrated records in a vein of music not unlike the beautifully disturbing and heavily weighted pieces of Hildur Guðnadóttir and the Chernobyl soundtrack.
Icelandic composer Herdís Stefánsdóttir talks about crafting a modern score for the Victorian-era THE ESSEX SERPENT on AppleTV+, alongside co-composer Dustin O'Halloran, and her score to Y: THE LAST MAN on FX. How her path from law-school dropout to writing music for dance students worried her parents. Plus, how Herdís ended up working with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson (ARRIVAL, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) and meeting Hildur Guðnadóttir (JOKER) in Reykjavik — and what its like scoring films and television with Icelandic musicians. Interview by Matt Schrader on MORE SCORE.
I've been a fan of the Deutsche Grammophon label for a long time, ever since I got this Steve Reich box set back in the early 80s in college. I've collected quite a few DG recordings over the years. Over the last 5 years or so I've noticed them branching out and releasing music by a wider variety of artists and music that isn't strictly classical. From Moby to Christian Löffler to Olafur Arnalds to Brian Eno to Clark, the music is surprising for DG but also seems to fit well. After a lot of listening to Parallels by Christian Löffler, I decided to do a mix of recent DG favs. I hope you enjoy it. Cheers! We speak about psychedelics, astrology, synchronicity, and magic, and how these tools and practices have informed our approach to life. We touch on integration, ego, and humility, plus discuss the conflict between scientific worldviews/mechanistic thinking and the exploration of subjective meaning and belief. Plus, I talk about my inspiration for The Lunar Circle and why I approach and teach astrology in such a nuanced and experiential way.Find Chris at chrisryanphd.com, on Twitter and on InstagramSongs featured: “Bathroom Dance” by Hildur Guðnadóttir from the movie Joker and "Inside I'll Sing” by Shards & Isolation ChoirHow to support the show:Rate, review and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes!Join the Substack community and get access to newsletters, exclusive articles, and a private Discord server just for listeners of the show, which you can join by clicking this link - https://discord.gg/sQHPPVC9 (This Discord link expires in 7 days from the episode date.
