Tijdens het sporten verlies je vooral natrium via zweet. Meestal hoeft dat geen probleem te zijn, maar het kan wel gevolgen hebben bij lange inspanningen of warmte.Wanneer moet je elektrolyten aanvullen tijdens het sporten?Voor de meeste sporters is extra aanvulling van elektrolyten niet nodig, zeker niet bij inspanningen korter dan vier à vijf uur. Bij warm weer, of als je veel zweet, kan extra natrium soms wel zinvol zijn. Maar vaak zit er al genoeg in je sportdrank.Hoe weet je of jij extra elektrolyten nodig hebt tijdens het sporten?Als je tijdens het sporten klachten ervaart zoals kramp of duizeligheid, of merkt dat je veel zout verliest via zweet, kan het zinvol zijn om elektrolyten aan te vullen. Voor de meeste sporters is dit niet nodig, maar voor salty sweaters kan het verschil maken.Zijn zweettesten nuttig om je elektrolytenstrategie te bepalen?Alleen als je structureel problemen hebt of extreme inspanningen doet. Een zweettest kan dan inzicht geven in hoeveel zout je verliest tijdens het sporten. Voor recreatieve sporters zonder klachten is zo'n test meestal overbodig.Heb je ook kalium of magnesium nodig tijdens het sporten?De verliezen van kalium en magnesium zijn meestal klein, en worden vaak al opgevangen via normale voeding. Niet om af te vallen, maar om te ontdekken of je met warmte hetzelfde kunt bereiken als met een hoogtestage. In deze aflevering hoor je wat dat experiment hem opleverde, hoe Guido het fysiologisch duidt, en of dit ook iets voor jou kan zijn. Zeker als je traint voor een warme wedstrijd, of gewoon nieuwsgierig bent naar de slimste manier om te zweten.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: Wat levert hittetraining voor hardlopers precies op?Volgens sportarts Guido Vroemen zorgt hittetraining vooral voor een toename van het bloedplasmavolume. Dat betekent dat je lichaam beter kan afkoelen, en dat je hart iets minder hard hoeft te werken bij inspanning. Het effect is niet hetzelfde als bij hoogtestage, maar wel relevant — zeker als je traint voor een wedstrijd in warme omstandigheden.Is trainen in de hitte echt een goed alternatief voor een hoogtestage?Voor wie geen bergen of dure stages tot zijn beschikking heeft, kan hittetraining een waardevolle prikkel zijn. Gerrit testte het zelf door in zijn schuur te fietsen met extra kleding en een heater. De fysiologische effecten zijn anders dan bij hoogte, maar overlappen deels. Het is dus geen vervanging, maar wel een slimme optie.Hoe pak je hittetraining als recreatieve loper het beste aan?Begin rustig, beperk de duur en monitor je lichaam. Gerrit gebruikte een CORE-sensor om zijn temperatuur bij te houden en bleef tijdens de sessies boven de 38,5 graden. Guido benadrukt het belang van doseren: overdrijven leidt tot oververhitting en prestatieverlies. Kies hitteblokken bewust, idealiter na een gewone training.Wat zijn de risico's van trainen in de hitte?Oververhitting is een serieus risico. Signalen zoals duizeligheid, kippenvel of misselijkheid zijn rode vlaggen, zegt Guido. Het lichaam kan z'n warmte niet goed kwijt en dat vergroot de kans op hittestuwing. Daarom is het cruciaal om hittetraining goed te plannen, je intensiteit te bewaken en op tijd te stoppen als je signalen merkt.Wanneer is hittetraining zinvol voor jouw wedstrijdvoorbereiding?Als je traint voor een race in warme omstandigheden — bijvoorbeeld in de zomer of op een zuidelijk vakantie-eiland — is hittetraining een slimme voorbereiding. Het helpt je lichaam wennen aan warmte, zodat je minder snel oververhit raakt tijdens de wedstrijd.
